Actually, it's funny you mention how a 20% glowup can basically change a middle aged man's appearance, because this is kind of what I noticed all along, except for women. There's always a larger amount of pretty girls than good looking guys, and I think that's because girls on average, whether it be due to societal expectations or something else, tend to spend much more effort on maintaining good looks. Also, most people, as long as they are average looking, will all have a chance to be good looking-ish as long as they put in the effort. In the past, it was mostly girls, but nowadays I think guys are feeling the pressure too.
"Except for woman" - probably because most of them already did that 20% of improvement and everything above is a tricky territory. Either gets too expensive or may be botched. But yeah, nothing surprising that there are on average more good looking girls than guys just because of the amount of work they put in. Everyone in the same region has the same type of parents. So if there's only a "beautiful girls" in some city, that means guys just don't put work in it. Their genetics are the same.
I think it's good that men are discovering they can look (and feel) hotter without changing their entire face and body - with clothes, hairstyles, make up and so on. Hopefully helps those who thought "ropemaxxing" was their only choice.
I think he had plastic surgery. His nose and chin are sharper and his ears stick out w attached lobes. Anything else he had done is probably more subtle. Good for him in general but I don't believe his new look is just from exercise and a skincare routine

i think a big part of it is the inherent thrill of mystery when it comes to masks, and it somehow works even if you know what's under it. like we all know what tom hardy or karl urban or peter weller look like but bane, dredd and robocop still look at times far more enticing then just their plain faces (sorry peter). phasma in the sequels, too - we know gwendoline christie's face very well by now, but her being in the full mask and then having it cracked just enough to show her eye was the most exiting moment of that whole movie. so to me, it's not necessarily that the dad and the guy looked "bad" to begin with, but obscuring their faces with masks, glasses, caps and hair just added this paradoxical mystic to their obvoius charisma. not everyone turns into an eboy with a masks, some of us just look like creepy stalkers.
It's horrible because you can tell he's desperately trying to get money, probably to make him or his daughter's life better. The level of desperation it takes to do this so quickly, and without caution, is scary to me.
I feel like the it gets worse as more groups debut, especially with idols like wonyoung. She's an extremely gorgeous, fairy-like idol but she's also extremely underweight which worries a lot. And the thing is with SK, the taller you are, the skinnier you have to be and it's frightening. I'm glad that Mamamoo doesn't follow those standards
@@K_idk even recently another girl from the kpop group everglow, she's really tall and she had a healthy BMI for *her* height. But she was getting shamed online and after their hiatus, she came back so much thinner
"You look easy to draw." I'm convinced the people insulted by this and/or using it as an insult aren't artists themselves. Or don't draw faces/bodies. Here's the thing: 'Beautiful' people...are EASIER TO DRAW. Their skin is more perfect, their face is more symmetrical, and they are closer to the 'ideal simplification' of how most modern drawings of people are made. People with wrinkles, acne, crooked teeth, nonsymmetrical features, or disproportionate features are HARDER to draw. They're also more interesting to draw. There is a reason you tend to see artists drawing the same faces over and over. Because it's easier and the faces they choose are the conventionally attractive ones. Variation is HARD. Nonconformity to the beauty ideal is HARD to portray properly. More 'beautiful' faces...are simpler faces. Fewer lines, fewer shadows being thrown in different directions, the curves are consistent, etc etc.
i think it depends on who is saying it and the context behind why it’s being said. commenting on someone’s appearance, regardless of intent, can always be interpreted as insulting. like if someone who is bad at drawing, knows their bad at drawing calls you easy to draw and they pull up with an accurate yet ugly drawing of you, i can see how it could hurt. but even when i see people use it in a mean way, it’s always funny. like there’s never been a time it hasn’t made me laugh, even if the drawing is phenomenal, just the statement itself is funny
@@mr.bingusthecat Yeah it's about context and who's saying it. Artists online aren't always looking for good facial people(weird saying but you get the idea). There's a thing also called "joking art" and/or "offensive art" based purely on exaggerating features to hurt others. It really doesn't matter if you're an artist or not(even though myself am one). People have biases whether they accept it or not.
One of my friends who is an artist loves one specific type of noses and loves drawing hands. So if she tells you that your hands look easy to draw and so does your nose it's pretty much the ultimate compliment. Easy to draw can just mean something they are familiar with drawing or something they really like drawing.
Yep. Thank God a fellow artist put this here. To add to it, That’s why drawings are often simplified, with many people having same face syndrome. It’s even said that drawing beautiful faces is better because it increases engagement and build your social media profile(koolean and sam). Drawing ugly people is indeed harder.
Yep. For me personally bigger eyes and wider noses are easier to draw, and sometimes the drawings end up leaning towards those features when I don’t mean them to.
Bro idk if it’s just me but why is this guys content so entertaining. I love the way you explain certain topics, it’s simple but it explores the effects of beauty standards on society. But at the same time, it’s kinda funny 😭😭 (tysm for so many likes)
I have Xiaohongshu and am frequently on it. Yes, the mask thing is verrryyyy huge on this platform. 😂 It's like the mask allows people to subconsiously fantasize about the rest of the person's face. Anything is possible as long as the mask is there to let the imagination run wild. The mask is the canvas and our minds are the paint brush 😂
As woman...yes 😂 men need to learn the secrets of women. Exercise, pick good clothes, take care of your skin, pick a hairstyle that fits your face shape and learn the good angles to take selfies. 👍 No red pill nonsense needed.
Exactly. If men put more effort into taking care of themselves instead of blaming others for their shortcomings, they would absolutely be able to find a decent partner. Red pill is not the way to go
beauty standards are always changing you can either look good for other people or be happy with yourself because everyones unique♥. but him taking advice rather then being offended is lovely and its great that he can be confident in himself
Here's a theory of mine to explain what's going on with the dad. So, honestly, where I'm from, which is not China, the dad in the before photo would do really well with women in their 30s and up than the dad in the after photo. It's because looking like a boyish eboy is hot for women in their 20s, but older women prefer a more rugged, older look. And he was definitely handsome before he even started his glow up. But I guess in China, everyone prefers hyper-young looking people, and that's the beauty standard, so he had to ditch the rugged look and go for a softer look. But now the problem is, he has a squared jaw, which is considered manly in the west, but I guess in China it's considered ugly. That's one thing the mask hides. But overall, it seems everyone in Chinese tiktok prefers the masked look. And it finally clicked why, especially after Edvasian explained the low visual weight thing. Eboys are basically trying to look like anime boys. Anime boys have large detailed eyes, but barely any details drawn for their mouth and nose. So by virtue of being a real human being, everyone is going to have noses and lips that are too big and to detailed to fit the anime look, and what wearing the mask and only showing your eyes does is it tricks the mind into perceiving faces the same as an anime boy (long hair, big eyes, barely any details anywhere else in the face including smooth, featureless skin). I think you go to a village in China where people aren't exposed to anime or kpop pretty boys and you show them his before and after, almost all of them will say he looks less like a human in the after photos.
that's actually a really good insight ngl. Like you said, i'm sure if you went somewhere in rural china, they might even find him in his more masculine look more attractive. The whole mask thing absolutely comes from the simplification of features inspired by kpop, anime etc.
@@animeartadventures89 True, but remember that those types of media are based on Asian beauty standards that have existed for centuries. Their culture values a more youthful, pure, and feminine look which def can be seen in kpop and anime. Basically, what you said can go the other way.
Wish people would appreciate round faces more. He looks good sure and it's nice he feels better but like round faces are so sweet and fits into ur hands perfectly
aww this description sounds so wholesome. I have a round face and I've never really understood why other people (online) don't see them as beautiful when my family has always thought I was pretty ever since I was young. It's sad to think that my culture's beauty standards have totally disappeared now that internet beauty standards are so prevalent. And all we see everywhere are heart shaped model faces to the point where it's seen as the only beautiful face, and the one that plastic surgeons try to aim for.
People with round faces tend to look younger as well. Idk how old Edvasian is, but he looks like he could be a teenager (but I'm guessing he's in his 20s or even 30s)
none of these people were even ugly at all i'm so confused. like these average guys get gaslit so easily into believing themselves to be ugly it's so sad. and I'm not sure why more people don't have this opinion. I guess I just have a higher ugly cap idk. also every single time that is said its almost always because the guy has a bad haircut.
Everyone looks the same to me. Very forgettable. I have face blindness so I don’t really understand the kpop fans etc. I do perceive faces tho just able to forget them afterward. I can see nowadays that faces get more and more uncanny especially in Asian dramas. It is making me confused especially since their styles have become similar in each character.
@@andromedamessier3176 don't trust the appearances of Korean actors in kdramas. Many of them are styled based on a very specific trend on appearance and/or have had work done to fit the current "beauty standard". I am speaking this with love as someone who's watched kdramas since the early 2000s. An actor can look very different based on the popular trends.
I'm really happy he ignored the mean advice and didn't get plastic surgery. He looks great! *unless he did and then I can't complain about the results. I wish money wasn't a factor though. I wish him and his new wife happiness.
I wouldn't say money was a factor rather a lack of education. In China having a good job is more about status rather than how much money you make. Actually it's similar in America too. I remember as a child my kindergarten teacher told us if we don't do well in school we'll end up being a garbage man. She ended up making a child cry because his father was a garbage man. That always bothered me even to this day. Till one day I googled it and garbage men actually make more money than teachers do. But the title of "teacher" has a status that garbage man doesn't even if they make more money.
@@Miss_Kisa94 Well I would not want to hug someone who works as garbage men or women. I subconsciously think they are dirty. But for me, any other labour job is fine and high value just like being teacher as long as they shower everyday. But the society doesn't think like me though
The story is different on this video compare to other... It was said that the dad started doing that because his little daughter was obsessed with those type of men on tiktok. So the dad did this as a way to show her how "unattractive" those men can be so she would stop being so obsessed.

Loosing weight is much more of a looks increase than you might think- I think yeah the filters are probably at play but also, when I was at my thinnest, my whole “facial weight” was very different. However- it was unfortunately very difficult to maintain that weight so I just try to keep it as low as possible while being happy and having energy.
Yes when I was at my lowest I was starving everyday and I couldn’t maintain it. So now I try to eat in way that I am not starving and still maintain a good weight.
The hardest thing about staying a low body weight is getting enough nutrition in every day, you have to think a lot about what exactly you're eating and whether it's a. Healthy and b. Nutritious.
It can be hard to find the time. I'm married with a toddler so finding time for sports and exercise is tough. A lot of housework needs to be done, I also work part time, do most of the chores, and I prepare all the meals and foods for my family. I will begin going to the gym soon but I took 1.5 years before I was able to. Pregnancy and complications put 50 pounds on me!
Idk why I just love everything you talk about and cover it’s just so interesting and you make it entertaining and funny enough but still in a way that sets it into reality at the same time
What saddens me is that those men are so insecure they'd do literally anything just to conform to societal standards. Literally no one values being yourself anymore and it's depressing af.
I feel as if it’s like True Beuty. How around the beginning Jugyeong posted her makeup selfies when she was trying makeup for the first time and the comments being harsh, then one comment lead her to a tutorial on how to correctly apply makeup and when she followed it, she looked even better than before :0
Asians will definitely comment on your appearance. My aunt visited me when I had a 4 month old and told me I need to go to the gym 😅. Whenever my kids go to their grandma's house I have to debrief them afterwards and do damage control if she made comments about their weight.
That sucks. My parents have always commented on my weight, and it has led me to a distorted idea of my looks as well as an eating disorder years ago. I hate how cruel people can be.
@@biteofdog my mom used to do that too especially since recently I've gained weight because I've a lot to deal with rn when i told her it bothered me she said she thought that it was a silly thing and she didn't wanted me too feel bad about myself so she stopped body shaming me after that day.

12:44 that kind of mask jump-scare literally happened irl with me and my husband. We both have long, thick, dark hair, his is curly and mine is straight. We both had facial hair at the time though. I'm indigenous so i have almond shaped eyes and hooded lids. My husband is white but also has hooded lids. We were walking to the liquor store across the street from our house and got cat- called by a day-laborer outside in his truck with his buddies (good natured and not the threatening kind of cat-calling). On the way back out, we took off our masks to show we had beards and the whole car just burst out laughing and ribbing their friend that had done the cat calling, and he started laughing and apologizing, and we had a good laugh too, and walked back home 🤣

I tried not to judge peoples attractiveness based on what I could see with a mask after a cool, punk/alt looking dude at work turned out to have terrible facial hair, a creepy smile, and was 10+ years older than me. He was nice but did not live up to the fantasy.
Happy new year Ed! Still looking handsome explaining internet stories to us. I'd say that man is brave for even going to ask other people what he can do because some of us don't know we need other people in order to be better, we just have to be selective in the advice we take in. He looks healthy in the final result, surgery or not. I hope his lady and him stay together a long time and are happy. Thanks for sharing Ed!
When I was in high-school. Our computer class had a portion where we learned netetiquette. However, it's sad that they don't seem to really teach that as much anymore. I'm not sure why
I worked at a Walmart during the pandemic and I had never seen one of my coworker’s full face because he was always wearing a mask. One time me, him and an older women who was also a coworker were eating lunch together. That was the first time I saw him take off his mask. The older women said “Ahhhh I thought you’d be handsome” and I almost spit out my water. He thought it was funny. And tbh he was pretty average looking. She didn’t need to burn him that much though 😂
This is my favorite trend! There should be a community where people gather and help each other glow up in life, mentally, physically, socially, financially etc!
On this topic you've personally come so far and changed, but grown in confidence compared to when I first found and started to watch you. I guess Ian and his sister had an influence even on a serious note? But- you're one of the favs.
Stoooop the high visual weight and low visual weight is exactly how I think 😭just like losing face fat makes ur face obvi smaller and then things like high cheekbones sharp jawlines big lips and big eyes will become more prominent 😭😭😭ugh like that’s what I think all the time is “my eyes aren’t tiny, my lips aren’t tiny, it’s just the fat on my face” 😭😭😭
I really think we’re just used to plastic surgery. If you look at the speed run dude ,he clearly got work done, ears can’t change the angle thru a simple hair cut u know? Just compare the ears side by side. It’s sad that our brains really got manipulated into thinking glow ups like this are achievable with disciplines and the techniques. I’m also pretty sure he got an rhinoplasty ,but I’m not blaming . It’s the same with K-pop idols or Hollywood stars, they all get work done after some time ,the entertainment industry literally forces them to do .
It shows that some people need other people believing in them to make a significant change in their lives. Internet is a scary place but there are many people who will give you genuine advice. You need to put in the work though.
I discovered your channel sometime last year and I really love watching/ listening to your videos, especially when I’m doing something like washing dishes or painting. The way you speak is so entertaining but still nice and I enjoy watching everything you put out, even if I wasn’t really interested in the topic before. Also you seem so kind and lovely, and just very cool with yourself and who you are ☺️ BUT when you said you’re older than the ‘96 guy, how old are you? 😳
The fact that he asked how to improve, was very honest about himself and what his lifestyle was like, then listened, and made actions on his feedback that was actually helpful (probably having to wade through torrents of negativity to find the helpful ones), while keeping positive on his goal, and having this whole parasocial relationship based around bettering himself, these are all actually very good qualities in a life partner: ability to receive feedback and take action, willingness to better oneself, and how to turn himself into a higher value partner, all very attractive qualities in my opinion. And obviously it worked! On the subject of plastic surgery, I think not-losing significant amount of weight and building muscle can seriously change the presentation of your underlying facial muscles, as well as his age being right around the time when any leftover puppy fat from his late twenties would also vanish, so I think it is simply a combination of this natural facial definition that occurs in your late twenties and early 30s for guys who are already average weight, combined with the fact that he was clearly a little chubby when he started out, very full-faced that could have been extra because he was still around the age with the puppy fat around the eyes, mouth, and even nose. On the subject of filters, I think yes obviously.
7:39 fr even before greetings the first thing they say is to body shame you it's so common and i always thought it was normal until i discovered that it's not and it's a habit i picked up from my elders so i stopped doing it to others but sadly it doesn't stop others from body shaming me.
12:17 lol, isn't this basically beardfishing? we thirst hard for this supposedly "hot" guy coz of his thick hairy beard, but we scream not of pleasure but of horror the moment he decides to pick up the razor!😂🤣
I mean it's good for him that he could gain more confidence and is happier now (hopefully). But I'm not sure how I feel about the second part of the video. Of course taking care of yourself is important. But to a point that you get the affirmation and approval from some strangers on the internet? I also feel like filters and AI art are bringing catfishing on another leven ( * says the person with an AI art profile picture * ). I'm not entirely sure if I'm so happy about this. But yes, from personal experience you do feel better when you take good care of yourself. I still feel there needs to be a certain balance when it comes to validation and helping someone to gain self-confidence... without changing everything about them (not talking about constructive criticism).
i dont know how to word this, but this video really shows how conforming to beauty standards and giving in to bullies isnt the way to better yourself, bc thats just going to give you a super unhealthy complex and make you feel like you have to get plastic surgery, put on filters, wear a lot of makeup, etc. to maintain "beauty". theres a difference between giving someone advice to better their lifestyle and help their physical appearance with time VS SAYING STUFF LIKE "ew gross fat, just eat less, you look weird, ugly. nose too big, waist too big, eyes too small" those kinds of comments arent ok and they arent "helpful" to anyone. its stupid that random people on the internet feel like they have the right to bully others smhhhh. ALSO, YOUR APPEARANCE WILL CHANGE WITH TIME. we arent just one thing- you will lose weight and gain weight, acne will come and go in different spots, some days you'll look more tired than others, your hair can change a WHOLE lot, just dont let your photos define you. dont listen to "b00blov3er69" when they tell you you're ugly.
But, this dude literally asked a bunch of internet bullies to rate him and then tell him how to fix his ugly. Then he actually did what they told him to do and completely turned his life around for the better! I'm not saying bullying is good...but maybe there can be something valuable to learn when you are getting bullied.

i think a big part of it is the inherent thrill of mystery when it comes to masks, and it somehow works even if you know what's under it. like we all know what tom hardy or karl urban or peter weller look like but bane, dredd and robocop still look at times far more enticing then just their plain faces (sorry peter). phasma in the sequels, too - we know gwendoline christie's face very well by now, but her being in the full mask and then having it cracked just enough to show her eye was the most exiting moment of that whole movie.
so to me, it's not necessarily that the dad and the guy looked "bad" to begin with, but obscuring their faces with masks, glasses, caps and hair just added this paradoxical mystic to their obvoius charisma. not everyone turns into an eboy with a masks, some of us just look like creepy stalkers.
@@wendymartin6479 dude, don't enable this shit.
It's horrible because you can tell he's desperately trying to get money, probably to make him or his daughter's life better. The level of desperation it takes to do this so quickly, and without caution, is scary to me.
Asian beauty standards are getting so unrealistic at this point
I feel like the it gets worse as more groups debut, especially with idols like wonyoung. She's an extremely gorgeous, fairy-like idol but she's also extremely underweight which worries a lot. And the thing is with SK, the taller you are, the skinnier you have to be and it's frightening. I'm glad that Mamamoo doesn't follow those standards

It is going into uncanny vibe that sometimes I feel creepy. It just something unhuman? I don’t know the word to it. Just feel unnatural, i guess.
"You look easy to draw."
I'm convinced the people insulted by this and/or using it as an insult aren't artists themselves.

This is so much nicer than the western anti-mask stance. I hope this trend makes it to Europe 😊.

Nah, the dad who was dancing wasnt even ugly from the start, he was really handsome
Yes, all he really needed was longer hair in a good style to look younger. Nothing wrong with his face at all.
Great analysis. I always thought the e-boy/ e-girl aesthetic was more influenced by the scene/ emo style, but it reminds me of anime style too.
Mmm no
People with round faces tend to look younger as well.
I guess I just have a higher ugly cap idk. also every single time that is said its almost always because the guy has a bad haircut.
nah i'm on your side, every one of those dudes was cute imo :(
It took WAY too long to scroll down and find a comment speaking this TRUTH!!!!
Everyone looks the same to me. Very forgettable. I have face blindness so I don’t really understand the kpop fans etc. I do perceive faces tho just able to forget them afterward. I can see nowadays that faces get more and more uncanny especially in Asian dramas. It is making me confused especially since their styles have become similar in each character.
its actually insane what a good haircut can do for a man

Poor daughter. Went from wholesome fun time with dad core memory to 'oh my dad is dancing for money'
The story is different on this video compare to other... It was said that the dad started doing that because his little daughter was obsessed with those type of men on tiktok. So the dad did this as a way to show her how "unattractive" those men can be so she would stop being so obsessed.
@@NoReply28 exactly he wanted her to stop watching the masked e-boys doing sexy dances on tiktok and now that he is one of them, she actually lost interest in them since any of them could be her dad. Lol Perfect plan.
@@NoReply28 I don't really believe this story considering how young that girl was. Seems crazy a kid like that would be allowed to use social media, esp to simp over e-boys. Maybe I'm just out of touch but I'm literally still a teenager so something's gotta be wrong here.

Also you seem so kind and lovely, and just very cool with yourself and who you are ☺️
BUT when you said you’re older than the ‘96 guy, how old are you?
