Why have a complex transmission & drive train and not a motor on each axle?

they do that for low range gearing needed for heavier machines, semi truck type vehicles require 5-8 gears in low range for climbing inclines and crossing sinking terrain, you can also have differentials with locking mounted on the axels when they're not independently operated
