- I like splitting my boiler wood a little bigger than what most box wedge split sizes are...well all box wedges except the 5 way box wedge for the Eastonmade 37D.

I totally agree with your split wood mantra. And I only sell seasoned wood unless the customer specifically requests green wood.
Wolf Ridge is taking a back seat with the 37D.
we call larger pieces to be an all nighter use to keep the house warm.
You can see the piston on that splitter is hugh. It makes cutting through that wood look easy.

I bought my Eastonmade 22-28 with several wedges including the box wedge. The box wedge works so good for my boiler wood and campfire wood that I haven't even tried the others.
Hello Shifty , It is good to hear someone other than me advocate splitting boiler wood, dries better, takes less fire in the boiler to get it to ignition temp, and makes for a cleaner burn, maybe a bit more handling, but not as hard of work to load the boiler, if you do not need a crane, this set up is an investment in yourself, not one for fuel or electric companies. working wood keeps you out of the saloons, bars and other seedy joints.

Dan you finally took my advice and used your trailer. You will find out by stacking the big stuff first is the majority of the wood leave the bundle wood behind and pick that out next. Then you can empty the scraps and do it over again. Saves time and your back and it helps on cleanup. Peace
Yep it does work much better to like you said pull big stuff out and filter down to smalls and scraps. Only thing is this little trailer fills up pretty quick...hahaha
It may fill up quickly but forces you to stack and clean up grasshopper. Be vigilant focused like you’re wrestling days. Peace
That machine is perfect for your operation. People saying it's overkill are just jealous! Haha

@@DanielAtkinsFirewood well he literally splits MORE wood than people that make firewood a legitimate business, and he's doing it as just a hobby. To me the 37D is the perfect solution for him!

Awesome video Dan. I agree that the 5 way wedge almost works better than the 7-way. If you want it to split even easier, then touch up the edges of the wedge with a grinder.
Even at ~$30K, the 37D is a hell of a value for a small/midsize operation that "stages" their work with minimal personnel. Hard to justify a full blown $150K+ processor unless you have 3 people dedicated to keeping it fed, splits moved, etc, and supporting equipment to handle all that.
Completely agree and it is fast - so even if you do decide you want smaller pieces, it really doesn't add much time overall.
This Eastonmade machine is awesome. I wish there was a reason to have one of these at my house. I agree, WOW!!!
So all-round a great machine. In one piece of equipment you have both bundle grade and boiler/woodstove pieces..😁👍
Wow Andrew hit it out of the park, imagine how much firewood you could split in a day. That splitter is a real brute. Took me a minute to figure the 5 way wedge, 4 splits and the top. Cheers my friend.

That machine makes sense in your yard. The cycle time is impressive . Boilers deserve proper seasoned fuel wood. I’ve witnessed so many wood boilers used and abused……
All you need now is an app on the phone that would move the levers without touching them, that would be awsome.

That machine is impressive for sure! Hardly even slows down pushing knotty oak through a box wedge.
That 37D can handle some decent sizes knots with the 5-way box wedge. The splits won't look pretty but it will push it through.

We had a big ol oil furnace that was changed over to wood 🪵 burning. We would use those big slabs and they burned way better than regular cut wood. The firewood lady suggested it and we never went back to regular cut. Just a few pieces would keep the house warm all day so we didn’t have to come home to a cold home

That Eastonmade is definitely impressive which comes from that diesel . It takes all the work outta it. If I we're to order one it would definitely have that diesel. Stay safe my friend
I never used to split my boiler wood, but then I got sick a few years ago, and my wife couldn’t lift the rounds to load the outside wood burner. I now split everything and have 2 months worth of emergency wood racked up near the furnace in case something happens to me. Be prepared and think ahead. Besides the split wood seasons and I don’t have as much creosote now.
Love this wedge. I also sharpened mine just like you suggested! I run it on a 12-22. BTW, If you radiator isn't rubber mounted, it looks like it's loose.
Nope the radiator is on rubber mounts and will flex like that with the impact of the push plate coming back.

that's a beautiful machine Dan I also burn in an outdoor wood stove and watch some other youtube channels with commercial style splitters and hope to own one someday
Nice job on the splits but still a little too small for me. It's a lot of extra handling and you have a nice long seasoning time the way you do it. have a homemade 36" stroke splitter with 4 way wedge. I cut my boiler wood to 32" long and split to about a 6" piece. That way my wife can load it into the boiler. My door is 24" square and firebox is 54" deep. I only put in enough splits for the heat demand we need at the time.

Nice splits, I like the pizza wedge. But if you had both, you'd have the best of both worlds. Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
The pizza wedge is something I may need to get and try at some point. Would definitely make a lot of bundle wood in a hurry but would need to have nice straight grain wood to go through it I think.

That’s so easy. Have to admit that with all that waiting around I would need an out house because waiting makes me you know have to go. Hay honest opinion how loud is that thing. Your neighbors must love it lol
lol...yeah it makes it pretty easy. It actually isn't all that loud....I think the conveyor chain is loudest part I have engine exhaust pointed towards back of the lot. Had it running full bore and walked halfway back to the house and wasn't loud at all.
I have been burning wood all my life cutting trees and splitting wood. I have yet to understand why people would split their wood so small when they are using it to heat their house. I understand smaller splits means hotter heat I also understand UN-split wood means longer burning time . Smaller splits means you will burn more wood meaning you need more wood to burn . I know how a wood stove works again been burning wood all my life .
That's a common myth. Smaller splits season quicker which is a huge bonus. 4 small splits packed tightly will burn just as long and probably more efficiently since it will be significantly more seasoned, than if it was 2 larger pieces of wood not split down. That's just my experience!
@@Dorchwoods I have many times tested that out I have used 4 split pieces and timed the burn and from the same tree I used one log the same as the 4 split and it would burn a lot longer hours longer then the 4 split . I have been burning wood from the time I was 6 years old Stared splitting wood at the age of ten but was working in the woods starting at 8 hauling wood . Our only heat was wood. Try it some time just for the hell of it take a season log of the same size split one and time the burn you can even test the heat it gives off then after throw in the other log same size and weight . Time that as well you will notice it does not burn as fast and it will not burn as hot but it will burn longer meaning longer heat . The lager the split the longer the burn . I think you would find it interesting to try and see .
I agree a larger piece last longer. It all depends on how you want your heat. If I start my stove I use small splits to bring it up to temperature faster. Once it’s to temp then I use larger splits. If it’s really cold and blowing I prefer to mix the sizes. It will give more BTUs faster with smaller splits because they burn faster. I will change how I feed the stove depending on outside temperatures and conditions wind ext. just remember 20 pounds of dry wood of the same species all contain the same amount of BTUs. It’s how it’s split is how long of a burn you get out of that 20 pounds of wood. My 2 cents. Peace

With a little over 100 acres of ice storm damage smaller trees. I cut Our damaged trees into 4' lengths and threw into small bunches. That would pick up with JMS forwarding trailer and back up to the Aqua Term 345 boiler. Just slide the round wood into the 54" fire box. Easiest way I've done fiire wood. Everyone finds their preferred method. With mostly White Pine We'd get over 12 hr burn time on a full firebox load. About 4 days per trailer load.
A lot of those pieces look smaller than boiler wood to me
Just wondering why so many firewood channels put so much emphasis on "bundle quality" or "bundle grade" firewood. The typical consumer of "bundle" wood is the least likely customer in the firewood market to know quality wood from junk wood.
100% agree. That's why I bag my wood so it has a very professional appearance with wood that burns great, regardless how ugly it may be. Also, I only sell pine for campfires, selling hardwood for outside burning is such a waste in my opinion! Pine is fine!
At the end of the day, bundle grade and the twistiest wood out there all burn up the same.
I need to make you a cup holder for that thing!!

lol...it has one, just is on the other side of the log lift. If you take the owner's manual case and take the cover off, then flip it upside down it fits back in the tube but will hold a can/cup. 😀👍🍻

Great video Dan! I had a feeling you were going to like that set up. Looking forward to more info as you use it more. Any issues with getting gnarly logs stuck in the wedge?
That is a nice machine. A question for you. It seems to make a real lot of rattles and I notice when ever you pull the box back with the hydraulics the radiator seems to move and flex. Is it loose or is it just poorly fastened to the frame? I would be concerned it is going to keep flexing and brake over time. Maybe it needs an angle brace to make it more sturdy ?

Way too small, it would take 50 pcs to fill boiler out. I’d split those in half and call good
You must have a really BIG boiler...lol...those rounds only split in half would be a nightmare to load. I'd rather move more pieces that are manageable in size/weight than struggle and possibly injure myself tossing huge chunks around.

Yeah it is far too easy now...lol...almost to the point that I felt out of place or that I was forgetting to do something...hahahaha
The control layout could use a bit of work. No reason everything can't be on the same side of the splitter.
They build it so that it can be ran from both sides.
@@amandadavis9726 That would make sense if there were two people, but having the lifting table, that is the side I'd want to be on. If the start, throttle and probably most important, the wedge adjuster, were on the other side, it'd be perfect in my eyes.
@@number40Fan you’re right. I’ve seen people stack a bunch of rounds on the lifter,…and then run the splitter from the other side. I think it kinda depends on what exactly you got going on.
Can you move the box wedge up a hole and get alittle bigger chunks?
Yes it is adjustable to move up & down for some control over split size.
I'm not trying to join the brand war... After all my splitter is a maul... But couldn't you have gotten a box wedge for the Wolfe ridge? ... I know the deal with Andrew and he's a hell of a guy for doing what he does for his advertising $... But Chris still makes a splitter that is in the conversation ( or was until Andrew gifted him out of the scene).
