    I've watched your channel for years and really enjoy your content. Followed your firewood journey and doing reviews like this helped me decide how to proceed forward myself. Finally put in my order for a 12-22 with a 7 way box wedge a few weeks ago. Hope to have the machine in the summer. But I'd like to thank you for making videos like this because it's help me learn more and take well informed steps in business that otherwise I might not have. Much appreciated Adam! Thank you!!

      From Steel To Wood may I suggest a vertical?? You already have the horizontal and the vertical has a much smaller footprint. You will be able to give honest opinions and comparisons on both designs then. EM built a vertical. I think he sees the benefits in them too. Either way I know you’ll be able to accomplish it.

    Adam as predicted I was not disappointed, box wedge and red oak making lots of firewood in a hurry. I do see one major flaw with your process “Who’s going to stack all that”. Take care brother

    EASTOMADE and ADAM the dynamic duo !!!! another great video Adam ! That EASTONMADE box wedge setup is the ticket for those large rounds .Great camera angles and explanation of what comes off the table . I personally like some of the small stuff it helps get the fire going for my own use .That little bit is small potatoes compared to the time savings you gain , you have to go along ways to beat that EASTONMADE . Thanks for posting !

      Just for your own information the log lift comes standard on that machine and it is a great feature . The pusher on all EASTONMADE splitters except the ultra , come standard with a retractable arm receiver behind the pusher . This allows you to add the box wedge later or it can be ordered with the box wedge .The lift coupled with the log cradle makes loading blocks almost effortless !!

    I used a plasma cutter to make a hole in the front of my bucket. You could use a drawbar type hookup or mount a ball. Same goes for the fork. Great video. I am planning to just use bucket loads of wood. Scoop up the split wood, dump into a drying area, then once every couple of weeks, dump some dry scoops into my shed on the house. No stacking!

      Hometown Acres You might like Out of the Woods. Folksy but informative. A Wood Mizer LX 15 isn’t cheap but is portable and could handle the 22” trunks easily and make some nice oak boards. I helped a friend after 18 trees went down in a wind sheer and he had a sawmill come to his back yard and cut up some 30-32” trunks. The trees were all oak and the cordwood from the front loaded 16 eight foot bed pickup loads. We got two loads of wood off a 14 ft trunk of 22” circumference in the back. We’re still not done back there. Anyway, nice to see you innovating and enjoying your Eastonmade.

    You could make two small holes on the side of the towball sleeve on your fork, weld nuts to the box section and tighten up the slack with two wind in bolts with washers welded to them for hand tightening. Easy to take up the slack and easy to remove again. :)

  • @papageo5
    @papageo5 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could leave the legs of the splitter as is if you put the forks of the tractor down as you move, as opposed to up. Or at least I think so. Great video and channel. Thanks for the free entertainment while it rains here!

  • @Back40Firewood
    @Back40Firewood 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Adam....I like that fork hitch, looks like it works great with being able to see when hooking up and does look to be more stable when pulling with it compared to the bucket hitch. I gotta get myself some forks & then think I'd prolly switch to something like that...good stuff. Yeah its no fun getting stuck moving a wood splitter, been there many times with my D130 John Deere...hahahaha. Those are sure some nice looking premium splits coming off the end of the splitter! 👍
    Have a good weekend.

    • @HometownAcres
      @HometownAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I’ve been stuck with the ranger to where I couldn’t go forward or backward. Had to unhook everything and then hook it up to the truck. Sucks when it happens at the end of the day. I would like to try a regular trailer mover or kinda like what Hank did. Might be nice to tow from the back of the tractor

  • @stevengrchan6590
    @stevengrchan6590 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Awsome splitter. You could drill two holes on the side and weld nuts over them . Then just put some bolts in it to keep the Hitch from side play on the forks.

  • @christhomas9837
    @christhomas9837 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Adam that is a very impressive splitter. The lift is perfect to save your back.
    Last week Gord, GP Outdoors, posted a video of a set of forks he just purchased. I suggested he drill a hole in the end of one forks or in my case both forks. Then you can put the 2" ball right on the fork. Less to have around and I'm sure it doesn't compromise the integrity of the forks. You can also put the hook part of a chain through the hole to lift things.

    • @HometownAcres
      @HometownAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve seen people have a ball directly on the fork before. I saw it in a boat yard where the forklifts are constantly moving boat trailers. It looked to work really well

    Those box wedge splitters are awesome I wonder how many cords that does an hour the best things about those is the pieces come out square so it makes it easy to stack the wood and you're always getting 4 pieces of wood split consistently and if I were to sell firewood I'd want all my pieces around the same size and this delivers that

    • @HometownAcres
      @HometownAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think realistically you can probably expect about 1.5 cords an hour working by yourself. All depends on the size, quality and species of the wood

  • @Cinder2008
    @Cinder2008 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Some day, someone will make a box wedge that doesn’t produce so much waste. If you are selling wood, I would think 20% waste would be a deal breaker.
    I enjoyed the video.

    • @HometownAcres
      @HometownAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of that 20% probably 10-15% is salvageable kindling. Only 5% is true waste

    • @Hugh1966

    • @Cinder2008

      Gus M if you are heating with wood, that 5% will wear you out refilling your boiler, stove etc. if you are selling firewood, that 5% can not be sold.

    I love watching your videos but I don't like how loud your music gets where I am constantly turning the volume up and down. Can that be adjusted? Don't get me wrong, I love your music selections but just don't understand why the volume change.

    Hey Adam nice job in the splitter wars. This machine performed awesome. I have to ask...would it work for you to hook ranger to pull end and tractor with either bucket or carryall at splitter discharge end? I’m looking for you not having to pick up the splits again or are you stacking them right there? Too bad they don’t manufacture the carry all with 2” receiver tubes already installed.

    • @HometownAcres
      @HometownAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I make sure where I drop my rounds is where I’m planning to stack so I have a lane of rounds, an empty lane for me to come through with the splitter and then the next lane is where I’ll stack it. So all my splits are right next to where I’m stacking. Trust me I’ve learned this the hard way. When you’re dealing with as much firewood as the box wedge puts out you need to touch the wood as few times as possible

    Any videos on the economics of this? Seems like a great job or side hustle, except that I see cords going for about $150-200 around here. Not much for the work involved.

    With the size and weight of the logs you're pulling around, it almost looks like you could use a full size ag utility tractor. The weight alone would be helpful.

    They do make hitch receivers for a tractor 3 point hitches. Makes them height adjustable. www.amazon.ca/Titan-Attachments-Trailer-Receiver-Drawbar/dp/B00CNUUU5A As Paul Short (youtuber) said, if you just pull a trailer from 1 fork tine, you may bend your loader arms out of alignment.

    • @HometownAcres
      @HometownAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should move the fork to the center of the 2 loader arms. That might help with this problem

    How long will that oak take to dry out where you live? Not sure if it is different here in the northeast... but it takes nearly twice as long for me versus my normal wood( cherry, and maple).

    • @HometownAcres
      @HometownAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m in Pennsylvania. Normally oak takes 18 months. I split this stuff kinda small so it will definitely be ready for winter 2021-22

      After burning Red Oak, I have to say , it is a pain in the as, I let it age for 2 years up in Maine, and still sizzles at times. Beech, cherry, maple, 1 year or less time to burn great. I'm of course surrounded by Red Oak, can't throw a rock without hitting a Red Oak. Beech is all dying or died, cherry is scarce, Maple makes syrup. Damn you Red Oak, cut it now and burn it when you tap into your 401k.

      @ThePete2432 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike G thanks for the input, I’m glad it’s not just me. I stacked 4 cords of 10 months seasoned oak for my winter burning only to be extremely annoyed. Had to drag out and store another 4 cords of my cherry and maple to burn. I hope by next year it’s ready to burn, at least it’s already by my house lol!

    • @HometownAcres
      @HometownAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      sean peterson that 4 cords of oak will last you a lot longer than 4 cords of cherry and maple. It’ll be worth it in the end

    Nice simple receiver that works good. That box wedge is the cat's ass. Enjoy watching that work. By the way, I watched all the other splitter wars videos. Must have been a little communication error. The other guys split into 6 pieces. Seems like you split yours too small, could have made 1 pass with your 6 way wedge.

    • @HometownAcres
      @HometownAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I thought it was more of an eyeball test to make sure everything was campfire size. Some of those rounds when split into 6 pieces were still to large for even my indoor wood stove

    • @steve9007
      @steve9007 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i didnt like the 6 way because it kept throwing most of the big pieces off the front and he would have to push them back to the lifter. the box wedge is wayyyy better

    • @jasoncline4383
      @jasoncline4383 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. 6 way wedge has a specific size range that it is best suited for.
