Some folk've noticed that at louder volumes, a high-pitched tone can be heard over my voice. I erased several frequencies from what started out as a multi-frequency noise, but missed this one. I will be replacing my mic. In the meantime, if you listen at lower volumes, the sound shouldn't impinge.

When I was a Muslim other Muslims would try to justify that beating verse, but I always found it disgusting and then left Islam. Many Muslims do not see anything wrong with wife beatings because they think it is a God law. Sad :(

It shouldn't require gumption to criticize Islam any more than criticizing Christianity. That it does tells us something of the fear that Islam implants in followers and non-followers alike.
Islam hates idol worship so it forbids all depictions of living beings fearing that they may become idols in the future. Of course it is bullshit when you throw away the idea of worship itself, but I guess it will take a few more centuries and a billion more deaths from pointless wars for that to happen.
It's so bizarre how that's the "logic" behind it, yet they still lost their minds and murdered innocent people over *parody* images, which were clearly in no way designed to be worshipped, but to be laughed at.
The fact that I am so not used to seeing a depiction of Muhammad, that even an extremely vague depiction made me a bit uncomfortable speaks volumes to the enforcing of guilt upon others as some sort of forced contract that is unnecessary and idiotic
I experience this even with depictions of Christ and Yahweh, or even just The Holy Ghost. It's strange. My parents are Lutheran so I was raised in environments full of the symbolism. Went to church and all that. So very familiar. Excluding when I was so young that all I knew was "Yes, ma. Yes, pa." I was never a believer. Just as I came to understand personhood I began to see contradictions... through that. Just as soon as I was old enough to have that first spark of reasoned empathy, that was it. I didn't feel like I needed anything more at the time to think "There's something wrong with all of this and I don't trust it. The things they're teaching are a weird mix of happy, scary, and awful." So there was never a point where I was meaningfully emotionally invested in Christianity. I can't say any terrible abuses befell me, smaller infractions maybe. I got lucky compared to some friends. But those depictions and symbols still make me anxious, because of many of the things they represent.

Being a Prophet is a "risky" profession. Getting riskier by the day. Maybe that's why we see less of them nowadays. The "old" prophets like Mohammed still influences us because they were not challenged effectively in their time.
Growing up in a Christian church, there were some of theese so called prophets. I remember the congregation praying, and all of a sudden one of theese prophets would start screaming gibberish, followed by some... message, that was ussually saying that the return of Christ is extremely close, and that we need more faith in the trials to come. I had always found them very creepy, and never knew what to make of them. I later learned that theese prophets were making a killing off of the people in the churches, as they asked for money and gifts, as this was their full time job, if you will.

8 fingers are more "hygienic" just as circumcision of baby boys is more "hygienic". We see how ridiculous this is applied to girl babies but society is still blind to the barbarism of circumcising baby boys, celebrates and even subsidises it. Even doctors come up with quacker roney excuses.

I was having a discussion with a non religious woman who had been raised in a society where it was common place for boys to be circumcised. She said when she has her boy (she was pregant) she will have him circumcised because uncut penises are just ugly.. It is sad that religious dogma has so changed the minds of even secular person's to believe that a natural part of a person's body is somehow.. wrong.

I watched this video when it was new, and it was one of the things that helped cement in my mind that I no longer believed. Now that I'm "out" as an atheist, I just wanted to thank you for what you do. Recognizing that miracles have no connection to message is one of the best insights that helped me shed religion for good.
This one really isn’t as good as part 1. Its entire thesis is that our morals improve over time, whereas religion remains static. The fact is, just because our morals change, just because we do or believe something now, doesn’t mean we are right or advancing. Depression and suicide rates are at all time highs. Perhaps our current moral system is not beneficial to us.
...But when someone is leaving their religion, a link to this video and others like it will make that transition less confusing, painful and perhaps even achievable - preventing relapses. I suspect the intended benefit was never to deconvert people in the full throes of religious ideology but rather to share stories and thoughts that help people on the journey to becoming independently minded. :)

I love The Color Purple. I had to study it for A-level English literature, I would never have read it otherwise because i was a victim of abuse and while it was difficult to work though I ultimately really benefited from reading it. It was a cathartic experience that allowed me to see myself as more than just a victim of abuse and helped me heal some of my old wounds. So yeah, got a little excited whenever it was mentioned.
Delightful coincidence. Read it as part of my Eng Lit A level too. Like you, I felt a personal and positive resonance with the book - in my case, it was in relation to narcissistic abuse. Always enjoy including personally meaningful references in videos. Thank you for sharing your experience of moving away from victimhood and towards healing.

If there was a "perfect divine plan", it would obviously have been designed in such a way that everyone could understand it, regardless of intelligence or faith. Otherwise it wouldn't be "perfect".
It makes me wonder what makes it perfect. My first guess would have something to do with everyone ending up in heaven, but that's clearly not the case... I guess since the religious believe that their god is the arbiter of morals, any plan they come up with would count as perfect just because they said so.

Actually, there are many like him, maybe not as good as him but they don't come out. I myself proved at the age of 13 that Islam is far from perfectly moral (not that such a thing exists to begin with, given morality is a human creation and we are far from perfect ourselves). My brother never believed to begin with, despite our parents being orthodox and very religious. But we don't speak out too often, it is not safe to do so. especially in India (still not the worst place to live in btw)

When a prophet says a miracle will happen and he's wrong as they always are, we have to consider how likely any particular cause is to have that effect. So god not existing is still a better explanation than god just hiding, and that conclusion gains additional evidenciary weight from the god claim on each and every failure. This means every failed prediction or false claim of religion, even a mere failure to produce a god with lack of evidence, is evidence for the non-existence of a god. For any one claim, weak evidence is fairly meaningless. But we don't have just one claim. We have trillions of man-years of effort sunk into the god question, and only apologetics and falsehoods to show for it, which rather than converging on a single conclusion like a true proposition does, continually branches and expands outwards into innumerable sects and personal beliefs to the point that there are as many different mutually-contradictory god claims as there are god believers. That means the case is proved against gods by any reasonable and most unreasonable shadows of doubt. We don't need additional citations. You can't save your god by providing still more evidence against him with yet another failure to exist. To prove your god at this point, you'd need to invent a time machine, and go back in time to change all the things already true that disprove your god.

I am a Muslim who lost faith when I started reading philosophy and realised there were so many intelligent people who never claimed to be prophets, like Seneca, Socrates, Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, et-cetra. There were no miracles but plain common sense and curiosity to understand life. I agree to everything you said. It makes me sick to know that everything I stood by all my life was a lie!
Yes, philosophers and sincere thinkers like some of those you mention do the real work. Their ideas stand the test of time based on their own merits. Prophets cheat the test of time - using force and threats to artificially perpetuate their ideas over time, instead of offering any true insight.

You make the strongest argument against Jesus I've ever heard. All he did was run around and allegedly perform a few magic tricks. He *never* was even *claimed* to demonstrate God's existence. _Everyone_ was running around doing silly magic tricks back then. Kings _hired_ personal magicians, for crying out loud. I mean I guess there was the mountain thing where God allegedly told Jesus, and only him, that "yeah you're a great son." and that's it. Christians might try to use that as the "connection" but it is *stupid* how easy that is to fake. Literally just go up a mountain, go back down, and lie. Even the OT itself warns against people like Jesus, giving an express warning that "if people come teaching things contrary to the existing scripture, you need to stop them! Yes, even if they perform miracles!" Deuteronomy 13, if you're curious.
This is useful. My mother decided that messianic judaism was the way to go with (predictably) little actual knowledge of judaism or the bible. She has a series of conscious decisions to follow the rules of judaism while (ironically) recognizing yeshuah as the savior. In case you dont know, yeshuah came to fulfill the law, yes, but his message targeted the pharacees and seduces; the literal embodiment of legalistic religious structure. The literal stricture she looks to as a guidebook for her behavior. It really doesnt matter what I say to her, she simply deflects with nonsense explanations, anger, or a plea to ignorance. The thing about Jesus though is that he was ministering in a 100% Jewish culture where the existence of God was presumed so he wouldn't need to prove God's existence to them.

I am born Christian, convert Muslim and I made my way out of religion and deism 2yrs ago, not least because of your videos. Thank you for educating me and being an important part of my way out.
I was born in Germany, was old enough to actually see and realize what was going on in WW2. My grandparents went to Church, as did my mother. But I made the conscious decision to leave the church when I was still a very young teenager. Since then I have studied comparative religion and got a PHD which is about as useful as teats on a boat. In any case, it helped to support my conviction that all religions are nothing but a criminal racket with a respectable payout for the professionals.

The thought entered my head some 50 years back that most religions are basically control structures with pretty common traits of Prophets, "blind faith", reward in the future, apostasy as the highest sin etc. etc. That thought was the best vaccine of my life and spared me vast amounts of grief and wasted time. I'm glad you talked about David Icke; there are some of us who have developed anxiety from the sort of spirituality promoted by people like him, not just overt cults that physically bring in new members. Anyone who believes any similar teachings to be true will live in fear when the 'negative' aspects are taught (i.e., "you're destroying yourself by eating this kind of food or doing this kind of activity or meditating a certain way or not at all", etc).

This video is just what I needed today, my mom told me a story of a friend of hers and while she didn’t say it was a miracle I knew she was leaning towards that conclusion. I’ve been deconverting myself privately so I’d been trying to work out how to disprove or satisfyingly deny it but the most I could come up with was that “it’s coincidence” or “it’s personal experience so I have no reason to believe it as a miracle” but neither had felt satisfying enough for me, hearing you say “any number of outlandish claims could be made about the same miracle” at 26:15 helped. Knowing I could make many other claims that hold up just as well, that finally satisfied my nesting to disprove/dismantle/deny it as a miracle.

I often has this argument with mu muslim friends. And always their answer is " It is the mistake of the human and not the god to misread or misinterpret a written word". I have no idea what to say to them. They believe humanity as a creature with total free will with some limitation to gods plan that is alive to be tested. With that belif it is okay to damn the ones who make a mistake in reading the text and say they failed a holy test.

I say that if you have to interpret what is being said by the holy book then it is worthless. An omnipotent being wouldn't make ambiguous statements. An omniscient being wouldn't make statements that could be mistranslated in the future by the very same people supposed to uphold it's law. But even if we handwave these logical flaws, it still follows that the "word of god" has to be interpreted, and if we get it wrong, we're damning ourselves. So what's even the point of reading the book at all, if we have no guarantee that what we learn from it is exactly what our god wants us to learn from it? And if we still magically could learn exactly what the scriptures meant, then there wouldn't be division in the churches because everyone who actually read the book would magically just know the right answer, which would be the same every time.
Well maybe you are not damning yourself if you misinterpret something. Cuz intentions are the most important thing in Islam. So, if your intentions are to do good or to follow what God has said even if you end up doing the opposite you would still receive a reward. Which leads us to a really important question. If a person does really bad things with the right intentions does that mean he would go to heaven?
In islam there is a hadith about "if you ask too much questions, you will end up like previous ummah (people, this hadith talk about Moses' people which in Islam considered doomed to hell) I'm a former muslim from deep islamic community
Fantastic video. I think the most concerning thing you brough up in this is the segment about Muhammad and Islam. Islam was essentially started much like Mormonism and the like, only Muhammad got a really early head-start and he had significantly more power and influence at his disposal. Unlike Mormonism and the JWs though, Islam is HUGE; it stands toe to toe with the whole Christianity. And yet, its teachings (especially the gender-roles thing) have seemingly had a much harder time adapting to a more progressive societal view. It's frightening how oppressive it looks in comparison to other religions, mainly when looking at Islmaic countries and how ingrained it is in them. It certainly isn't going to go away, but I hope one day it changes so that people who live primarily Islamic societies don't have to occupy such strict social roles, and so that they never have to fear being ostricized by their peers or senected to death because they have different beliefs/ don't conform to others of their gender/ are gay/ whatever else.

About Prophecies, i have 2 or 3 theories for what some prophecies happen: 1. The prophecy was based in something that occurred before (or what occurs everytime) EG.: "one day you will die" 2. The prophet are "Watchful eyes" to the person that they want make the prophecy. EG.: "Your husband will cheat on you with another woman." This issue of betrayal is something that happens a lot in society. 3. The "victim" of the prophecy, after hearing the prophecy, they Unconsciously (Or even consciously) make an way to make this prophecy true EG.: "one day, you will marry with this guy" now. The "victim" starts to make encounters and chats with this guy to get a chance of marry them (even if they divorce some weeks later) Sorry for my English, im Brazilian (🇧🇷) and I don't know absolutely the English language Edit: this is why i don't believe in Simpsons previsions. Because almost all of them fit into these three theories

You have such a way with words. Many of these points I worked through in my high school years as I pushed aside my theological upbringing, but I never had a way of putting the concepts into words. I have learned to keep quiet about my worldview, because every time I would try to explain myself to my family, I would come across as resentful which was never my intention. I wish my family and friends could see how manipulative and supressive their ideology is, but their mental defenses are too strong. No matter what evidence I bring up, they always say that I need to 'have faith like a child', not realizing just how manipulative that sort of language is. I would rather have the discernment of an adult.
I find that the whole notion of interpreting scripture or 'revelations' tends to get under my skin no matter which way you slice it. They're actively trying to convince us that an all knowing, all powerful being _desired_ for a message to be put forth, yet did so in such a way that it can not only be interpreted many ways, but can be interpreted to _actually_ mean the polar _opposite_ of what it expressly states? How can such notions ever be taken seriously? I've legitimately heard and seen people claiming that one passage supporting slavery is actually condoning it, that one talking about killing or beating actually means to _not_ do these things...an all knowing god, yet one that just couldn't figure out a way to write down something like "Don't beat your family" in a way that didn't come across as saying "beat your family". Nonsense.
Yeah it's a joke to think a perfect being would result in such imperfect communication. (Assuming we measure communication quality by how well people understand your intended message, which is clearly the only sensible way to measure it.) Interpretation's appeal is being able to essentially "co-author" the holy text. Been talking to a lot of Muslims lately and they rely heavily on a similar dishonest scam technique known as postdiction. Postdiction is how astrology works, where vague text is written and only after an event/discovery can it be interpreted as having predicted the future. Doesn't quite have the co-authorship appeal (because once scholars settle on an interpretation, they tend to want to lock it in), but it's still a useful (and utterly dishonest) tool for helping believers convince themselves their book knew facts it didn't.
@@majmage I've heard of that before, post-hoc rationalizations are how I've heard them described. It's complete bollocks really. Like if I were to write down "And ye on the day of many suns so did the birds rise over the falls!" and some years later someone makes some connection between sports team names that happen to match the outcome of some season and they're like "Look! This person is divinely inspired!" One important thing I learned from either Theramin or Qualia was the idea that any time someone says "god" if you replace "god" with "I" then suddenly their opinions and reactions make a lot more sense. It enables people to add a lot of false authority to their personal opinions when they state "An all-knowing, all-powerful being agrees with me!" Scriptures in general are one of the biggest jokes, really. A god with even highschool level education would be able to think of a more useful way of getting a message across.
I think thats false way of seeing it . For me thats putting the blame on god and not on yourself. Humans today deny the very obvious fact that the earth is round, data can be interpreted a billion different ways and we can lie to our selves about data
I've just come across your channel and I have to say, it is amazing that you don't have more views and subs than this. I really feel you deserve it. I've come to appreciate channels that take a more rational and respectful approach to these topics. Perhaps not respect for their beliefs but respect for the individual. I was raised with a Christian background, and one factor that slowed my conversion from christianity was the hate and vitriol I received from atheist. It made me defensive so I built walls. I modified my beliefs to rationalize the truth that made it through my walls, such as no longer believing in a biblical hell and adapting creation to match evidence. I never said online I was a Christian because I knew the hate I would receive. I began to hate atheist and atheism as much as they appeared to hate me. I eventually converted from christianity, influenced people like Christopher Hitchens and channels like your own. I still hate to see people disrespected for their beliefs, regardless of what side it comes from. Acting with hostility and cruelty towards theist will no more convince them than a christian holding up a "God hates fags" sign will convince gays to become straight. Anyway, I hope you get to read this. I just wanted to offer you these words of encouragement, that I believe your words can invoke change in people, of course I have believed things before and been wrong. ;) Like and Sub!

Some folk've noticed that at louder volumes, a high-pitched tone can be heard over my voice. I erased several frequencies from what started out as a multi-frequency noise, but missed this one. I will be replacing my mic. In the meantime, if you listen at lower volumes, the sound shouldn't impinge.

Islam hates idol worship so it forbids all depictions of living beings fearing that they may become idols in the future. Of course it is bullshit when you throw away the idea of worship itself, but I guess it will take a few more centuries and a billion more deaths from pointless wars for that to happen.

It's so bizarre how that's the "logic" behind it, yet they still lost their minds and murdered innocent people over *parody* images, which were clearly in no way designed to be worshipped, but to be laughed at.
The fact that I am so not used to seeing a depiction of Muhammad, that even an extremely vague depiction made me a bit uncomfortable speaks volumes to the enforcing of guilt upon others as some sort of forced contract that is unnecessary and idiotic

I experience this even with depictions of Christ and Yahweh, or even just The Holy Ghost. It's strange. My parents are Lutheran so I was raised in environments full of the symbolism. Went to church and all that. So very familiar.
Excluding when I was so young that all I knew was "Yes, ma. Yes, pa." I was never a believer. Just as I came to understand personhood I began to see contradictions... through that. Just as soon as I was old enough to have that first spark of reasoned empathy, that was it. I didn't feel like I needed anything more at the time to think "There's something wrong with all of this and I don't trust it. The things they're teaching are a weird mix of happy, scary, and awful."
So there was never a point where I was meaningfully emotionally invested in Christianity. I can't say any terrible abuses befell me, smaller infractions maybe. I got lucky compared to some friends. But those depictions and symbols still make me anxious, because of many of the things they represent.

Being a Prophet is a "risky" profession. Getting riskier by the day. Maybe that's why we see less of them nowadays. The "old" prophets like Mohammed still influences us because they were not challenged effectively in their time.
Growing up in a Christian church, there were some of theese so called prophets. I remember the congregation praying, and all of a sudden one of theese prophets would start screaming gibberish, followed by some... message, that was ussually saying that the return of Christ is extremely close, and that we need more faith in the trials to come. I had always found them very creepy, and never knew what to make of them. I later learned that theese prophets were making a killing off of the people in the churches, as they asked for money and gifts, as this was their full time job, if you will.
And all that did were killed.

I was having a discussion with a non religious woman who had been raised in a society where it was common place for boys to be circumcised. She said when she has her boy (she was pregant) she will have him circumcised because uncut penises are just ugly..

I watched this video when it was new, and it was one of the things that helped cement in my mind that I no longer believed. Now that I'm "out" as an atheist, I just wanted to thank you for what you do. Recognizing that miracles have no connection to message is one of the best insights that helped me shed religion for good.

This one really isn’t as good as part 1.
Its entire thesis is that our morals improve over time, whereas religion remains static.
The fact is, just because our morals change, just because we do or believe something now, doesn’t mean we are right or advancing.
Depression and suicide rates are at all time highs. Perhaps our current moral system is not beneficial to us.
It's sad that religious people won't even watch this video. We're sort of preaching to the choir...
...But when someone is leaving their religion, a link to this video and others like it will make that transition less confusing, painful and perhaps even achievable - preventing relapses. I suspect the intended benefit was never to deconvert people in the full throes of religious ideology but rather to share stories and thoughts that help people on the journey to becoming independently minded. :)

I love The Color Purple. I had to study it for A-level English literature, I would never have read it otherwise because i was a victim of abuse and while it was difficult to work though I ultimately really benefited from reading it. It was a cathartic experience that allowed me to see myself as more than just a victim of abuse and helped me heal some of my old wounds. So yeah, got a little excited whenever it was mentioned.
Delightful coincidence. Read it as part of my Eng Lit A level too. Like you, I felt a personal and positive resonance with the book - in my case, it was in relation to narcissistic abuse. Always enjoy including personally meaningful references in videos. Thank you for sharing your experience of moving away from victimhood and towards healing.

If there was a "perfect divine plan", it would obviously have been designed in such a way that everyone could understand it, regardless of intelligence or faith. Otherwise it wouldn't be "perfect".
It makes me wonder what makes it perfect. My first guess would have something to do with everyone ending up in heaven, but that's clearly not the case... I guess since the religious believe that their god is the arbiter of morals, any plan they come up with would count as perfect just because they said so.

Actually, there are many like him, maybe not as good as him but they don't come out. I myself proved at the age of 13 that Islam is far from perfectly moral (not that such a thing exists to begin with, given morality is a human creation and we are far from perfect ourselves). My brother never believed to begin with, despite our parents being orthodox and very religious. But we don't speak out too often, it is not safe to do so. especially in India (still not the worst place to live in btw)

No, I just need to provide a Bayesian accounting. Bayes' Theorem, for those of you following along at home, is a mathematical formula describing how much any particular observation is evidence for or against a proposition. It tells us that absence of evidence is in fact evidence of absence, and not only that but by how much. When a prophet says a miracle will happen and he's wrong as they always are, we have to consider how likely any particular cause is to have that effect. However likely you think that it might be that on this occasion god is just hiding and refuses to do the miracle, it must be more unlikely still that the miracle would happen anyways if god didn't exist. So god not existing is still a better explanation than god just hiding, and that conclusion gains additional evidenciary weight from the god claim on each and every failure. This means every failed prediction or false claim of religion, even a mere failure to produce a god with lack of evidence, is evidence for the non-existence of a god. For any one claim, weak evidence is fairly meaningless. But we don't have just one claim. We have trillions of man-years of effort sunk into the god question, and only apologetics and falsehoods to show for it, which rather than converging on a single conclusion like a true proposition does, continually branches and expands outwards into innumerable sects and personal beliefs to the point that there are as many different mutually-contradictory god claims as there are god believers. That means the case is proved against gods by any reasonable and most unreasonable shadows of doubt. We don't need additional citations. You can't save your god by providing still more evidence against him with yet another failure to exist. To prove your god at this point, you'd need to invent a time machine, and go back in time to change all the things already true that disprove your god.

I am a Muslim who lost faith when I started reading philosophy and realised there were so many intelligent people who never claimed to be prophets, like Seneca, Socrates, Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, et-cetra. There were no miracles but plain common sense and curiosity to understand life. I agree to everything you said. It makes me sick to know that everything I stood by all my life was a lie!
Yes, philosophers and sincere thinkers like some of those you mention do the real work. Their ideas stand the test of time based on their own merits. Prophets cheat the test of time - using force and threats to artificially perpetuate their ideas over time, instead of offering any true insight.

This is useful. My mother decided that messianic judaism was the way to go with (predictably) little actual knowledge of judaism or the bible.
She has a series of conscious decisions to follow the rules of judaism while (ironically) recognizing yeshuah as the savior. I was born in Germany, was old enough to actually see and realize what was going on in WW2. My grandparents went to Church, as did my mother.
But I made the conscious decision to leave the church when I was still a very young teenager.
Since then I have studied comparative religion and got a PHD which is about as useful as teats on a boat.
In any case, it helped to support my conviction that all religions are nothing but a criminal racket with a respectable payout for the professionals.

The thought entered my head some 50 years back that most religions are basically control structures with pretty common traits of Prophets, "blind faith", reward in the future, apostasy as the highest sin etc. etc. That thought was the best vaccine of my life and spared me vast amounts of grief and wasted time.

Anyone who believes any similar teachings to be true will live in fear when the 'negative' aspects are taught (i.e., "you're destroying yourself by eating this kind of food or doing this kind of activity or meditating a certain way or not at all", etc).

This video is just what I needed today, my mom told me a story of a friend of hers and while she didn’t say it was a miracle I knew she was leaning towards that conclusion. I’ve been deconverting myself privately so I’d been trying to work out how to disprove or satisfyingly deny it but the most I could come up with was that “it’s coincidence” or “it’s personal experience so I have no reason to believe it as a miracle” but neither had felt satisfying enough for me, hearing you say “any number of outlandish claims could be made about the same miracle” at 26:15 helped. Knowing I could make many other claims that hold up just as well, that finally satisfied my nesting to disprove/dismantle/deny it as a miracle.

I often has this argument with mu muslim friends. And always their answer is " It is the mistake of the human and not the god to misread or misinterpret a written word". I have no idea what to say to them. They believe humanity as a creature with total free will with some limitation to gods plan that is alive to be tested. With that belif it is okay to damn the ones who make a mistake in reading the text and say they failed a holy test.

I say that if you have to interpret what is being said by the holy book then it is worthless.
An omnipotent being wouldn't make ambiguous statements.
An omniscient being wouldn't make statements that could be mistranslated in the future by the very same people supposed to uphold it's law.
But even if we handwave these logical flaws, it still follows that the "word of god" has to be interpreted, and if we get it wrong, we're damning ourselves. So what's even the point of reading the book at all, if we have no guarantee that what we learn from it is exactly what our god wants us to learn from it? And if we still magically could learn exactly what the scriptures meant, then there wouldn't be division in the churches because everyone who actually read the book would magically just know the right answer, which would be the same every time.
Well maybe you are not damning yourself if you misinterpret something. Cuz intentions are the most important thing in Islam. So, if your intentions are to do good or to follow what God has said even if you end up doing the opposite you would still receive a reward.
Which leads us to a really important question. If a person does really bad things with the right intentions does that mean he would go to heaven?
In islam there is a hadith about "if you ask too much questions, you will end up like previous ummah (people, this hadith talk about Moses' people which in Islam considered doomed to hell)

Fantastic video. I think the most concerning thing you brough up in this is the segment about Muhammad and Islam.
Islam was essentially started much like Mormonism and the like, only Muhammad got a really early head-start and he had significantly more power and influence at his disposal. Unlike Mormonism and the JWs though, Islam is HUGE; it stands toe to toe with the whole Christianity. And yet, its teachings (especially the gender-roles thing) have seemingly had a much harder time adapting to a more progressive societal view. It's frightening how oppressive it looks in comparison to other religions, mainly when looking at Islmaic countries and how ingrained it is in them. It certainly isn't going to go away, but I hope one day it changes so that people who live primarily Islamic societies don't have to occupy such strict social roles, and so that they never have to fear being ostricized by their peers or senected to death because they have different beliefs/ don't conform to others of their gender/ are gay/ whatever else.

About Prophecies, i have 2 or 3 theories for what some prophecies happen:
1. The prophecy was based in something that occurred before (or what occurs everytime)
EG.: "one day you will die"
2. The prophet are "Watchful eyes" to the person that they want make the prophecy.
EG.: "Your husband will cheat on you with another woman." This issue of betrayal is something that happens a lot in society.
3. The "victim" of the prophecy, after hearing the prophecy, they Unconsciously (Or even consciously) make an way to make this prophecy true
EG.: "one day, you will marry with this guy" now. The "victim" starts to make encounters and chats with this guy to get a chance of marry them (even if they divorce some weeks later)

Edit: this is why i don't believe in Simpsons previsions. Because almost all of them fit into these three theories
4. The prophecy is vague enough that it can be retroactively applied to many events

You have such a way with words. Many of these points I worked through in my high school years as I pushed aside my theological upbringing, but I never had a way of putting the concepts into words. I have learned to keep quiet about my worldview, because every time I would try to explain myself to my family, I would come across as resentful which was never my intention. I wish my family and friends could see how manipulative and supressive their ideology is, but their mental defenses are too strong. No matter what evidence I bring up, they always say that I need to 'have faith like a child', not realizing just how manipulative that sort of language is. I would rather have the discernment of an adult.

I find that the whole notion of interpreting scripture or 'revelations' tends to get under my skin no matter which way you slice it. They're actively trying to convince us that an all knowing, all powerful being _desired_ for a message to be put forth, yet did so in such a way that it can not only be interpreted many ways, but can be interpreted to _actually_ mean the polar _opposite_ of what it expressly states? How can such notions ever be taken seriously? I've legitimately heard and seen people claiming that one passage supporting slavery is actually condoning it, that one talking about killing or beating actually means to _not_ do these things...an all knowing god, yet one that just couldn't figure out a way to write down something like "Don't beat your family" in a way that didn't come across as saying "beat your family". Nonsense.
Yeah it's a joke to think a perfect being would result in such imperfect communication. (Assuming we measure communication quality by how well people understand your intended message, which is clearly the only sensible way to measure it.)
Interpretation's appeal is being able to essentially "co-author" the holy text.
Been talking to a lot of Muslims lately and they rely heavily on a similar dishonest scam technique known as postdiction. Postdiction is how astrology works, where vague text is written and only after an event/discovery can it be interpreted as having predicted the future. Doesn't quite have the co-authorship appeal (because once scholars settle on an interpretation, they tend to want to lock it in), but it's still a useful (and utterly dishonest) tool for helping believers convince themselves their book knew facts it didn't.
@@majmage I've heard of that before, post-hoc rationalizations are how I've heard them described. It's complete bollocks really. Like if I were to write down "And ye on the day of many suns so did the birds rise over the falls!" and some years later someone makes some connection between sports team names that happen to match the outcome of some season and they're like "Look! This person is divinely inspired!"
One important thing I learned from either Theramin or Qualia was the idea that any time someone says "god" if you replace "god" with "I" then suddenly their opinions and reactions make a lot more sense. It enables people to add a lot of false authority to their personal opinions when they state "An all-knowing, all-powerful being agrees with me!"
Scriptures in general are one of the biggest jokes, really. A god with even highschool level education would be able to think of a more useful way of getting a message across.

I've just come across your channel and I have to say, it is amazing that you don't have more views and subs than this. I really feel you deserve it. I've come to appreciate channels that take a more rational and respectful approach to these topics. Perhaps not respect for their beliefs but respect for the individual.
I was raised with a Christian background, and one factor that slowed my conversion from christianity was the hate and vitriol I received from atheist. It made me defensive so I built walls. I modified my beliefs to rationalize the truth that made it through my walls, such as no longer believing in a biblical hell and adapting creation to match evidence. I never said online I was a Christian because I knew the hate I would receive. I began to hate atheist and atheism as much as they appeared to hate me.
I eventually converted from christianity, influenced people like Christopher Hitchens and channels like your own. I still hate to see people disrespected for their beliefs, regardless of what side it comes from. Acting with hostility and cruelty towards theist will no more convince them than a christian holding up a "God hates fags" sign will convince gays to become straight.
Anyway, I hope you get to read this. I just wanted to offer you these words of encouragement, that I believe your words can invoke change in people, of course I have believed things before and been wrong. ;) Like and Sub!
