      Well since he in no way claimed ownership of the notion, in terms of it being his own original insight, there's nothing at all wrong with the declaration in my humble opinion.

      katie murphy Nope. The great Mark Twain is the original one. “I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.” - Mark Twain

    • @previouslyachimp
      @previouslyachimp 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      katie murphy I think that a great many people (myself included) came to this understanding independently. If you spend a little time thinking about not being conscious, not existing etc., you inevitably end up considering the fact that you didn't exist before you were born. It's a simple logical narrative

    "There are twelve year old kids who are told that if they don't believe in god, they'll go to hell." 01:12
    This spoke to me so much. As a child my parents thought I was getting close to the point of exploring masturbation. They gave me a religious leaflet explaining how masturbation was wrong and you shouldn't do it. I was so naive, I thought that if you masturbated you liked men. This same religion had already informed me from a younger age that homosexuality was sin. For a while I had a child sized breakdown thinking that I was gay and abandoned by my God and soon my family. It wasn't until my atheist sister came home and found me crying that it was all explained to me. I was informed what masturbation actually meant, that I was not gay and that God was a theory, not fact. She stuck her neck on the line, as it caused a massive argument between her and my parents. She had made me question my faith, but my parents had failed in their duty of education. Funnily enough, neither of my parents are religious in the slightest now.
    *Religion should never be taught to children as fact.*

      +Christian Koncz She really is. Always been there for me and is just the best mum to her kids. Her son had to go to a Catholic school because it was the only one in the area. They sent him home with holy water to bless the house and told him she was a sinner. A school teaching kids disregard toward their parents... He goes to a different school now to say the least.

      Sam Bayliss Shocking. I'm guessing you are from the US. This sort of thing would be unthinkable in Europe, maybe with the exception of very rural parts of Southern and Eastern Europe. Transylvania, Sicily, that sort of thing.

    • @AzureNebula
      @AzureNebula 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Christian Koncz I know how it sounds, but rural England actually. Hence the shock the school did that. It's the kind of thing you'd expect of America though, with all the batshit things you hear about the bible belt.

      Sam Bayliss that surprises me. I guess Hungary is a particularly Atheistic country, but I can certainly imagine something like that happening in Ireland and Poland. But England always struck me as a rather secular country.

    I sincerely feel that comedians are some of the wisest people on the planet. Not solely because of their ideas, either. I mean I've had the same thoughts as Ricky for the vast majority of my life. But it's also because of how they manifest these ideas in the form of verbal/written communication. It takes a genius to take shit so incredibly sacred to so many people and have them laugh at it.
    I hope Ricky keeps doing what he's doing. He's a good man and a funny man.

      Yea, because, as Ricky said it himself, you can't be an agnostic. "What? You don't know if you believe in God or not?"

    • @DrR1pper
      @DrR1pper 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Edward Kenway But Agnosticism is not about whether you know if you believe in god or not. It's the belief/view that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of (a possible) god.
      If one were to approach the question of whether a god exists using the scientific method in an intellectually honest way, they would be forced to come to the position of an Agnostic Atheist. Why? Firstly because you cannot form a scientific hypothesis surrounding the existence of god as it would be untestable because it would be unfalsifiable and secondly, because you cannot test it you have no good evidence upon which to form a belief in the existence of god.
      Ergo, a scientists intellectually honest position should be by default that of an Agnostic Atheist.

    Same thing happened to me. Was about 10 years old, went over to my friends house and asked him if god knew I was trying to believe in him, and he just looked at me with this puzzled look and said "you believe in god?". Then I realized the only reason I was trying to was fear of going to hell. It was like having a weight lifted off my shoulders, I was always so scared I would go to hell because I couldn't make myself believe, awful that millions of kids probably feel this way right now.

    Ricky telling the story about his brother reminds me of how I first started questioning religion.
    My grandpa was an old grumpy man. I was about 8-9 years old and there was a Christian out of curriculum class I was attending at school. We had to paste paper icons of various saints (I was Christian Orthodox) in a notebook and I don't remember why but I was showing it to my grandpa. He wasn't very impressed by it. I asked him if he believes in God. His answer was: "I don't believe in nonsense." And from this moment since I've started questioning everything. It's fun, because my mom is kind of a spiritual type of person, so she's not only into religion in particular but superstitions, astrology,fate and so on.
    We have good times.

    It astounds me when religious people say atheists are trying to force their opinion on others. I ask them this.... When was the last time an atheist knocked on your door and asked you if you have read any other books?... A Jehovah's Missedit maybe.

    • @BeerGogglesReviews
      @BeerGogglesReviews 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Laren, do you actually form these thoughts in your head before you type them, or have you a computer infinite monkey program churning them out?
      I'm atheist. I'm not earning money to say that. I'm not a fascist communist. I'm not looking for another religion. There are quite enough for me to see as ridiculous.
      Oh and before you see the fact that I find your choice of religion as ridiculous, look at how you see other religions. A blue multi-trunked elephant god? Thor? Zeus? Mars? Aphrodite? Cat gods? How do you see those gods?

    The only thing that Mr. Gervais is mistaken about in this clip is that the Sun Kil Moon lyric he quotes ("You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?") is not an original composition by that band, but is actually a lyric written by Modest Mouse for their song "Ocean Breathes Salty", which Sun Kil then later covered.
    Other than that, Ricky is dead-on accurate in his views. We only have a finite amount of time here on this planet, in this one life, and then we are gone forever. So soak it up as much as you can, because someday the ride *will* stop.

    • @7Be
      @7Be 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mike Tank the only thing I disagree with him on about this is when he says none of us know so we're all agnostic. It's a common misconception that agnosticism has to do with knowledge. It actually has to do with perceived knowledge: A Gnostic atheist lacks the belief in god(s) and claims to know that there is no god. An agnostic atheist lacks belief in god(s), but makes no claim of knowledge that there is a god or gods. Most atheists fall under this definition. A "true" agnostic believes the likeliness of god existing and not existing are equal. An agnostic theist believes that god(s) exist but don't claim to know for sure. A gnostic theist believes to know for sure that a god or gods exist.
      It's not whether somebody HAS knowledge, but rather that a person CLAIMS to have knowledge, that gnosticism regards.
      Other than that, and that the awesome Modest Mouse originally made that song, Gervais is absolutely correct in everything else he says.

  • @9465anders
    @9465anders 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ricky quoted a band, "You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death" . This is a great song and lyrics, sung by Modest Mouse, not Sun Kill Moon, both great bands, he got that wrong.
    Ricky is always right on point when discussing religion, and I love his work !

    I've been having many discussions where I've asked why "agnostics" call themselves that, instead of atheists. Or at least call themselves agnostic atheists. And here he comes along using those two words together. I almost cried. I thought I was the only one. :P (Yes, probably ignorant of me. I bet there are others as well.)
    But it's very typical of especially famous people, to use agnostic instead of atheist, when they're clearly atheists. Just cause it's somehow more acceptable in some areas still. However, the definition the majority of people who call themselves agnostics use is "I don't believe in a god, but I don't know if one exists or not.". That makes you an atheist, deal with it. "Lack of belief in a deity.".
    Not using it only empowers the negativity that still lingers from our past.
    Also, if you feel like this; "I don't know if a god exist or not, and I'm not choosing a side." or something similar to that, then you're still an atheist.
    To believe, you have to actively do just that, believe. If you don't, you're an atheist.

      Nostalgia Guy You do know if you believe or not. To believe is an action. If you don't do that action, you do not believe. (At the moment, if that's the case.). So, until you do, you're an agnostic atheist.

    What happens to you after death, is actually quite amazing and comforting, if you think about it. Your energy and material returns back to earth (gravity keeps us here) which you came from and you will play a part in creating new and supporting current life. So you don't need to think you will be transferred to somewhere else "heaven/hell/where ever", but you will stay here. So all our loved ones stay with us forever, they are not transferred anywhere. That includes your dog too ;). All life ever existed is still here in other form.

    I don't believe in an afterlife, and the nice about it for me is that i don't ever think about it. It doesn't distract me or my thoughts, it doesn't take up my time, and i don't feel guilty about anything that i do in the mean time that i don't morally find negative.

      People like you make me glad I'm an atheist with real morals.
      I try to be good to other people not because I'm afraid of being punished by my imaginary friend or I expect to be rewarded for it in the future, but because it is the right thing to do.

    Listened to this earlier...fucking awesome. Gervais makes a hell of a lot of sense. Can't have faith...in anything...until you completely lose it. Though you don't have to necessarily belong to a side or a team.
    A lot will argue "You're either an atheist or you're a crazy, bible-thumping zealot! A creationist or an evolutionist! You're either with us or against us!"
    Not the case.
    A person can believe in science and still stare in "awe" at a mountain or a flower. The two aren't mutually exclusive. You don't have to pick a "team".
    This life is a wild ride. Enjoy all aspects of it...known and unknown.

There's nothing people can say back to his answer without sounding completely illogical. I don't know how you can hear, I only disbelieve in one more god than than you, and still be firm that your belief is the right one. I don't get it. Clevan Campbell It's not a question of judgement. This is the question in question: "Did you even listen to what he said?". I responded to your answer, because you responded "Yes" which belies the reason for asking the question in the first place.
      There follows a follow up question: "Did you even read what I wrote?".
      Perhaps a better answer to your initial question would have been: "No".

    I agree with Ricky totally when he says that he likes Jesus but not God. Jesus sounds like a great guy, and at the end Ricky says "I want others to treat me the way I treat them" or something along those lines. Jesus said that.
    I can't very well believe in God, but I think most atheists would agree that we all believe in morality. When you take from the bible only the direct quotes from Jesus and throw out everything written by Paul and Matthew and all those guys about him, Jesus seems like a pretty cool guy. He can be an example of good person without being the Messiah, which he never claimed to be.

      Norman Singh Believe me, I know. Mark:9-20 (the ressurection) wasn't even in our earliest copies of the gospels, it was added by later scribes. Same with the story about not throwing the first stone and the "I am the Alpha and the Omega" quote in revelations. I used to be a Christian, I'm not anymore for that specific reason.

    • @graceygrumble
      @graceygrumble 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Norman Singh My grandad died before I was born, (54 years ago) but I can quote you some of the things he said, because I heard them from my mother. The same goes for my grandma (died 72 years ago) and even a great granda - who told my mother (who would have been 90 this year) stories about the Siege of Mafeking (1899).
      I used to listen to my aunts and uncles, talking together and reminiscing about past events and what was said.
      I'm busy, writing a book about an uncle, whom I pestered for information, as a child. He was Latvian and his fight for survival, first against the Soviets and then the Nazis, filled me with awe! Through research: conversation with his relatives, friends and historical research, I have managed to piece together most of the story. Because, he didn't tell me his story in chronological order. I want to make it as completely accurate as I can.
      What I'm trying to say is, don't discredit oral history. Especially, from a time when most people could not read and write, because oral tradition, back then, was more likely to be accurate. When the Gospel writers were piecing together their stories about Jesus/Joshua, many people would have known similar tales: some were exaggerated; some made up; some were from eyewitnesses; some were second hand (like mine); some writers heard tales which others hadn't heard, because they spoke to different people.
      George Mason is right! From what people say about that Jesus bloke - the things he said and did and the underlying messages, are pretty cool. Whether he was the first to say "Do unto your neighbour..." etc. is immaterial. He was, by all accounts, a top bloke!

    • @graceygrumble

      Norman Singh Hey, mate get off your irreligious high-horse! I don't give a shit whether you believe or don't believe in a God.
      There was a bloke,(Jesus/Joshua); one of many 'messiahs' around at the time, who inspired people to write about him. Forget the Bible/religion/God - especially the perverted shit in the Old Testament.By all accounts, about Jesus, he was a top bloke.
      Fucking chill!

    • @graceygrumble
      @graceygrumble 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't quote the OT - I know that's bollocks. Don't quote his 'followers', because they're the some of the nuttiest people around.
      Just describe to me, anything this bloke/ Messiah/ fictional character is supposed to have said about how people should live, with which you take issue. Because, I think he - if he existed - sounds like a pretty nice fella.

    When it comes to death, the idea of reincarnation doesn't seem that far fetched to me. The first law of thermodynamics states that no energy or matter can be created or destroyed, only changed. So when you keep that in mind, your "soul" or brain function or whatever you'd like to call it continuing to operate as a blade of grass or a gust of wind isn't an absurd proposition.
