We have the ATiles plugin for 3ds Max, with the same functionality, but you can use any custom geometry as a tile for roofs, floors and so on. With the free 2.x version you can build almost anything for a small projects.
@@AvizStudioTools yes i even bought the pro version because i liked it, but these smart objects are something else ... if you would set it up with the 4 most common used tiles, i would buy it in a haertbeat. it would be much appreciated ;-p
The size is fixed to file's system units. You can try to use different values for "System Units Scale" or try our free plugin ATiles for full control over the size and the type of the tiles.

Is there any way to use maxscript with Atiles? This manual process is slow compared to the now outdated and dead Batzal. Which, had the option to select the entire roof and build in one process. It would be great to be able to apply to all of the planes, not just one at a time, and if possible it would be fantastic if we could script the action. We are using Railclone for the capping as it's more advanced, and can be scripted.

This is a quick solution to apply roof tiles to your model. For changing the size, shape and other parameters you can try our ATiles plugin: th-cam.com/video/0PbImE4FzzI/w-d-xo.html
If it's not too late, try to copy and convert your roof geometry to mesh and delete all unnecessary polygons and vertices. This way you can eliminate a lot of potential issues, in your case you may be using xrefs or similar objects.

Any plugin that can apply multiple textures/materials base on sub elements of the geometry should work.

For custom tiles/stiles you can use our ATiles plugin to set the options and shapes that you need.

It's a complex task, you can use any geometry with ATiles plugin. Smart Objects are different and you can not modify them.

In 3ds max 2025, the bottom row seems to be cut off from the end level of the roof in the z axis. How can I fix it?
Make sure the bottom edge of the roof plane is horizontal.

Can you upload some screenshots or video of the issue? What are your system units? Try in new file with default system units.

Sometimes the smart object will not work if you have duplicated vertexes. Try to select all vertexes of your roof planes and weld them.
