  • Multiple clips of E-2C Hawkeyes during land based refueling, and launch/landing aboard U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. The Northrop Grumman E-2C Hawkeye is a twin-turboprop plane designed to be an airborne early warning and control platform. It has advanced radar and surveillance capabilities which allow it to detect enemy aircraft and missile activity, and communicate these threats to friendly aircraft and land forces.

This plane was made by Grumman. The SAME company who built the Lunar Excursion Module od LEM (the module that landed on the moon)
I lived 1/2 mile from the end of the runway in Bethpage, NY where they were built. So these planes (along with the F-14, and F-6) used to fly SUPER low over the top of my house. I could wave to the pilots (and they would wave back) Grumman employees over 85,000 people in the plant during the 60s and was a GREAT company to work for. The plant was a 365/24/7 operation. The enployeed whole families too! It was such a shame that the plant closed down and left long island a pure bedroom community

Boeing, and Lockheed ( the two companies who will dominate US Aviation markets currently ) dont have any contracts to build new models or bodies for EW planes, but the closest replacement would be the E/A-18 Growler, but give it a decade and we’ll see new planes that will carry the role of the Hawkeye.

Anyone tell me why the Hawkeye has a white cross painted on its nose? What's it for?

bigdmac33 marks like that help the landing signals officer recognize the particular aircraft type, since it’s similar to the COD aircraft, but handles differently.

@@johnkaufman5146 No, the plus on the nose indicates a 427 engine vs the older 425 engine. The 427 is more powerful and requires different correction calls from the LSO.

Bob Cranston I’d seen something similar on an A-6 vs an EA-6 B, but didn’t know about the Hawkeye. Thanks

Do these planes get shot at? They seem important, like a lightbulb on a Christmas tree, without this their eyes are gone
