Oh the truth that the Tribe was an active part of the slave trade. A story never told about in Hollywood. Slavery always gets blamed on western societies. But we didn’t start it and we were the first peoples to fight to end the trade.

Slavery was king Ghezo Dahomey's entire kingdom's bread and butter. He was quoted as saying, "The slave trade has been the ruling principle of my people. It is the source of their glory and wealth. Their songs celebrate their victories and the mother lulls the child to sleep with notes of triumph over an enemy reduced to slavery."
Unfortunately this is the sad truth. But it is addressed in the film. Maybe not as deeply as it was but it is addressed. And also, Unfortunately nobody can win for losing. But they do have a history and it should be told. I dont think its to glorify slavery or to abandon the fact that they were heavily involved in the slave trade but to tell their( the Agojie) story

That's correct. In fact the very warriors glorified here were responsible for upholding the tradition of capturing other tribes and selling them into slavery and those not fit for slavery were butchered by said warriors.

Because some were sold for money. Some gave their girl children to the Agojie. Some were captured during battles. Some were caught during enslaving raids on other kingdoms. It's all in the first few minutes of the movie. I hope you see it.
Love that the media and everyone involved in the making of the film doesn't let historical facts get in the way of a good woke narrative.

By basing their fictional story on real places and peoples (Dahomey and "the Europeans"), it will cause people to turn to Wikipedia (and other historical sources) to see the truth -- which is that Europeans (the much demonized British, especially) were the ones who ENDED chattel slavery in virtually all of Africa, and did it in the face of the resistance of Arabs and many local African princes. (It would have been better for the producers of this movie to set in a completely fictional "African nation" like Wakanda.)
The uncomfortable truth (to woke racists like yourself) is that it was the Europeans (especially after the 18th century Enlightenment ideas became practical political policy in the 19th century) who brought science, modern industrial technology, and, yes, individual rights and ideas of constitutional government to "the peoples of color" worldwide.
No ordinary people of Africa were "empowered" -- and especially not women (whose main function was to fetch water, tend to the gardens with hoes, and avail themselves sexually to their men) -- until European Enlightenment ideas of human rights and equality were BROUGHT to Africa by the "colonists".

"How accurate is The Woman King?" we learned that in real life, the Dahomey are much more the villains than the heroes. The Kingdom of Dahomey was a bloodthirsty society bent on conquest. It was customary for the Dahomey to return home with the rotting heads and genitals of those they killed in battle. They conquered neighboring African states and took their citizens as slaves, selling many in the Atlantic slave trade in exchange for items like rifles, tobacco, and alcohol. Many of the slaves they sold ended up in America. They also kept some slaves for themselves to work on royal plantations. The business of slavery is what brought Dahomey most of its wealth. For them, it very much came down to either enslave others or become enslaved yourself.
Consider watching the movie, you might be surprised by what is depicted! Also, consider reading books that don't ignore the massive European influence during this time on Africa. African nations battled amongst each other just like many other nations on different continents. If fact, you can insert "Europeans" instead of "Dahomey" in your statement, and it would be accurate. Europeans, with their advance weapons and united front, were able to threaten Africans with the classic "play by the rules - or be destroyed" playbook. Leaving many to feel like they had no choice but to sell their people to the Europeans. In some cases, to protect their own people, they would capture other Africans to sell, causing great divisions among tribes. This was part of the European strategy to divide and conquer. The Dahomey were one of the African regions who were able to muster up enough force to fight the Europeans and win an epic battle. This movie is about that particular victory. The Dahomey eventually lost "the war" because Europe was too powerful, nonetheless it was an incredible feat considering what they were up against.

@Brian H . Yes, but what was unique about the Atlantic Slave Trade was "race". Dahomey was wrong, so was the British, France, Portuguese, Spain. Just to name a few. The idea that people believe the Brits stopped Dahomey for altruistic reasons is laughable. Slavery in Europe simply became less economical, and the "free market" idea gained traction. Also, there were many rebellions all over the world that were happening. Africans were rising up fighting for their freedom. Yes, there is enough blame to go around. Certainly, France is no liberator! Ask Haitians, hell ask present day Mali!
@Brian H It is very interesting that you would take that quote out of context. Consider going back to my FULL comment, read it slowly and try again! You don't even have to read books to know that that quote is true - just do a google search for that time period. You will see that through colonization, Europeans were able to establish economies that African nations had to either participate in or be destroyed. Some took advantage of the situation - others tried to resist.
Everybody knows that slave systems have been in Africa before this time. That does not mean that Europe did not have a divide and conquer strategy. I mentioned in my original comment that Africans did go to war with each other so there were divisions - But those divisions were multiplied and amplified when the Europeans came. Why deny that?
@Brian H European colonization brought stability to Africa? By whose standards? And yes, I ABSOLUTELY do think that their different lifestyles were sustainable. In fact, I believe that Africa would be MUCH better off today if Europeans never arrived. Just because a big bully comes and says, "do it our way because your way is wrong" and then imposes their will. That does not mean that they become more stable and peaceful. You act like Europeans came to save Africa. They were - to use your words - "a blood thirsty society bent on conquest". They were greedy, brutal and savage. To deny that is unfathomable.
It seems to me that your perspective has been jaded by the writers of history who want to deny how prosperous and advanced Africans were IN THEIR OWN RIGHT. When I say prosperous and advanced - I don't mean in terms of riches and weapons, but in terms of allowing the land that they lived on work for them. Prosperity/advancement is not always financial, shiny and technological. That is just the way we've been taught to think in this culture.
Africans did heinous things, just like Europeans because - I know this may come as a surprise - but they are/were humans too. But was their way of doing things worse or less "stable" that the Europeans' way?
You say that Europeans brought them education - but let's not leave out all of the knowledge that Europeans received from the Africans, only to use that knowledge to exploit them even further. Let's also not forget all of the knowledge and education that the Europeans received from Africans even 3,000 years earlier, that they used to build their kingdom and take the credit for in our books today. You even admit that Africans had a 2,000 year head start. The Africans were and did develop, just not the way that the Europeans did.

It deserves Best Picture an Viola an many other of the main women deserve Oscar's. It's totally different, an all that woman power an the core of the movie is real life. It's a movie. Clearly described as "based on true events". They were not attempting to create a documentary. Watch it or don't watch it, but understand that it's main purpose is to entertain and in this day and age you can always find out the real truth.

So, these were women who were "recruited" or "sort of sold into the kingdom" between the ages of 8 and 14, weren't "beautiful" enough to be "marriage material" had no choice but to fight or face beheading, were trained using physically brutal methods and were denied the right to marry, to have children or even have sex.

The Dahomey Kingdom was the longest and oldest slave trading Kingdom in all of W. Africa. These women warriors weren't "heroines" they were slave traders. Out of the 15 million Africans sent to the "New World," Dahomey was responsible for selling 1 Million. This film is a betrayal to those of us with enslaved ancestry from the Americas, Europe, and Cape Verde. What good is representation when you have to betray your ppl to obtain it? This woman's Oscar will be dripped with 500 years of genocide and colonialism. We deserve better!

The woman in that nation actually fought to continue the slave trade
it’s a movie that celebrates a kingdom of some of the most prolific enslavers of black Africans of all time. This kingdom Specifically fought to keep capturing and enslaving other black Africans when others were trying to eliminate the practice. And they did it all for money and conquest, as bad or worse than any white empire and living off of doing it to their own.
If you’re cool with celebrating the kingdom who thrived off of fighting for the ability to keep enslaving other black men and women, then by all means enjoy the film.

They kept their own slaves on their own plantations and bragged about it. That’s what makes it so bizarrely appalling. Don’t be fooled by Hollywood and their attempt to rewrite history. The all female warriors, known as the Agojie from the Kingdom of Dahomey, were a bloodthirsty group of female warriors commanded by King Ghezo, played by John Boyega. King Ghezo was an active slave owner and trader which brought much wealth into the Kingdom of Dahomey. The Agojie would raid, slaughter, and capture neighboring tribes to sell or keep for themselves. The main character Nanisca, played by Viola Davis, is almost entirely fictional. All but the name is accurate. Nanisca was a real person, who was witnessed by a French naval officer, brutally kill a bound prisoner and drink his blood in 1889.
So, however the story Hollywood feels they want to tell here, the Kingdom of Dahomey is the real villain. They sent many slaves to America. Although the Agojie were strong and considered admirable in combat, it was their inhumane actions under the rule of King Ghezo that sheds light on their brutal ways. It was the British who blocked ports in Dahomey to end the Atlantic slave trade in the 1850’s which was the only real conflict Dahomey had with the Europeans at that time. The Dahomey eventually met their demise by the French in the 1890’s.

I love Viola Davis. Her book Finding Me is wonderful! She reads it herself as a book on tape, and it’s amazing to hear her voice read such a potent story. The woman King is so fabulous, and so powerful! Viola Davis is my hero. As a woman and an artist!
I know Viola Davis didn’t fail to shout out the great Zora Neal Hurston who wrote a book called Baracoon about the Dahomey, and it’s chilling account of the women warriors who raided the story tellers village and sold him into slavery. This book is also part of the body of work.
She said it was one book out there, as if, she has done the research. So she might know more than she willing to say right now.

They could have made a movie where the captain of the agojie actually opposed her king's wish to continue slavery, and then sacrificed her life and that of her troops at the hand of the Europeans to cripple the might of the dahomey kingdom and king's slave-lust.
It would have been a bit closer to history and much more epic.
That would have been just as made up as what's in the movie. It would not have been closer to history.

The Dahomey Kingdom became known to European traders at this time as a major source of slaves in the slave trade at Allada and Whydah.
In 1851-1852, the British imposed a naval blockade on the ports of Dahomey in order to force them to end the slave trade. In January 1852, Ghezo accepted a treaty with the British ending the export of slaves from Dahomey.
The Kingdom of Dahomey was an important regional power that had an organized domestic economy built on conquest and slave labor, significant international trade and diplomatic relations with Europeans, a centralized administration, taxation systems, and an organized military.
There were two Franco-Dahomean wars, which ended in 1894 with France taking over. The Kingdom of Dahomey eventually became French Dahomey, a colony, ten years later.

Really strange how a woman whose ancestors were possibly sold into slavery by the Dahomey Kingdom Along with a million others Will go on to play the lead role in a film glorifying them . Never mind that the supposed European villains were actually attempting to stop the slave trade or that the supposed prowess Of these female Warriors amounted to being obliterated by the French army.
'fun fact': the last (illegal) slaves imported into the US in 1860 were captured and sold by the Dahomey.

It is fictional, written by 2 people, but based on real events. How often do you see a movie about African female warriors?? The studios did not want to make this movie. It took 7 years to get it made. Who would want to watch a movie about black female warriors? Well, it is Number one at the box office right now and I am glad that the director and Viola Davis did not give up and still made this movie .
The movie was different and was good from the beginning to the end. It is not a documentary.
At first the Europeans did buy slaves and the Dahomie were involved in the slave trade.
It was in the movie . They did not hide that fact. People are complicated. Situations are complicated and the Dahomie, the Portuguese, the people of the Oho Empire in the movie, they were all just trying to survive the best way they knew how, at that time.
You must realize that the French had greater advantages. They had better weapons and were greater in number, and physically, men are stronger and have a greater reach than women and have longer legs. It makes sense that they lost to the French.
Groups of female warriors often developed when most of the men were killed in war or sold into slavery. Someone has to take their place.
A lot of the Dahomie men were sold to the Oho Empire as slaves and this lead to the existence of these female warriors. That info came from a descendant of the Dahomie in Africa ,living in Benin, which is where the Dahomie lived.

There is a great book by Zora Neal Hurston that describes one of the last Africans brought to the Americans who said he was captured by female Dahomey warriors who were beheading people who resisted. Not snowflakes and quite disturbing.

Second, almost every movie that depicts history like this has an inserted "Hollywood narrative". Now...consider reading books that don't ignore the influence of Europe on Africa during this time to find out the historical accuracy of the main story minus the Hollywood narrative.
African nations battled amongst each other just like many other nations on different continents. Europeans, with their advance weapons and united front, were able to threaten Africans with the classic and savage "play by the rules - or be destroyed" playbook. Leaving many to feel like they had no choice but to sell their people to the Europeans. In some cases, to protect their own people, they would capture other Africans to sell, causing great divisions among tribes. This was part of the European strategy to divide and conquer. The Dahomey were one of the African regions who were able to muster up enough force to fight the Europeans and win an epic battle. This movie is about that particular victory. The Dahomey eventually lost "the war" because Europe was too powerful, nonetheless it was an incredible feat considering what they were up against. Now keep calm and carry-on folks!

The story was beautiful. What Hollywood movie is true unless it's a documentary? It had Powerful imagery and I loved it. The African Slave Trade is not an easy story to digest. I know the history, but this was not claimed to be actual events. Braveheart was not accurate, but I loved it. Many hands have blood on it, but the film is not a documentary and uplifts those whose ancestors were taken and I receive that!! Wonderful Job!! Go see it!
I like the fact they are glorifying this conquering group. We celebrate Greeks, Romans, Persians, ancient Chinese, Mongolians. They were all conquerers. Original American settlers were explorers and incredible men. I’m ok with this film as long as black people can get over themselves and accept white folks are gunna love their heritage and you can’t guilt everyone in to not doing that.
