Viola is around my age. Our parents had messed up lives, issues, and trauma. People like our parents didn't reach for help. They took their pain on those around them. It is up to my generation and afterwards to break the chain and cycle of abuse.

Many people in this world are not even aware that they are allowed to heal from their pain, but have been watching and listening to the depth of the AA stories [since BLM] and the depth of their stories from enslavement up until the 1960s, it is a wonder they survived. It is a honour to listen to Viola speak and hear her "truth" grace, dignity and her "class" in the true meaning of the word. In England many people over use the word "class" to apply to people of certain wealth and education, but to me class means dignity, poise and grace and Viola has all those qualities in spades. Yes, we break the chain by honouring our humanity and to believe we deserve the love inside and outside of self and to share and communicate compassion and kindness that does not rely on the money system that is ruling and exploiting so many of the world's humanity! She is right, let us own our human experience! What a Beautiful Black Women and real SOUL SISTRER!

I wouldn't be able to do that, nor would I in fact strive to. My parents both died when I was young (less than 1 year old when my dad died, 13 when my step-dad died,, 19 when my mom died) but they beat me, starved me, sexually abused me, isolated me, forced me to live in unsanitary conditions (example: a condemned house that had a heater full of urine and a bathtub completely filled with feces when we moved in), stole from me, forced me to work (illegally) by age 5, got me hooked on substances as a child (and not just by leaving them around)... I don't believe Jesus would expect you to care for those who did all that to you. It is true we are to honor our parents, but to put up with that abusers in that guise is just abusing that passage. Part of honoring your parents is recognizing who they are and who they are in these cases is someone you don't need to have around if you care about the wellbeing of your own spouse and children if you have them (Genesis does state that a man will LEAVE his father and mother to stick to his wife so those responsibilities come first). I would recommend no contact, personally, for abusive parents. You don't have to disrespect them, but they do not deserve your care. Yes, there are passages that talk about caring for your own (which your abusers are NOT, because they have made themselves your ENEMY by their own choices), but there are also passages that will tell you to disassociate from the reprobate ones (which abusers ARE). There are passages that speak of being kind even to your enemies. If that is your desire, be kind: help them get hooked up with services that can help them and call it a day.

I have always felt Viola Davis's performance in HTGAWM was too raw and real. Her pain in the series so tangible that one could almost feel her. Now I understand. This video explains the reason why it felt so much not like acting. She's had dreadful childhood and her path to success was not so easy.

Annalise Keating is a role she was born to play. I always end up coming to tv shows fairly late. The reason i have watched it so many times is because of the character arcs, and the concepts of overcoming struggles whatever they may be.
I wonder if some of Annalises, Michaela and Bonnie's characters were written after watching some of these vulnerable times. A little like her closing argument in HTGAWM. Human with flaws.

1:58 Viola said she was a bed-wetter until she was 14 and she was implying that this was because of the rats. According to Louise Hay's book Heal Your Body, bed-wetting means fear of a parent, usually the father. I also did this for a long time, as did most of my siblings, even though there were no rats in the house.

    • @michaelmaps2004

I can relate to Viola's powerful, detailed testimony about childhood poverty. I clearly remember living through a childhood filled with poverty, misery, neglect and hunger... while being mocked by neighbors in a small town. Poor self-esteem is definitely the underlying cause of BAD relationships. Prayer, focus, and hard work are required to destroy wicked generational curses!!! It has taken YEARS for me. Thankfully, now life is MUCH better than my childhood/young adult years. PRAYER WORKS!!
