- In this video I have a look at a 2011 Chevy 2500HD that has a message coming across the dash that says "Service Trailer Brake System" and I find it has a code P2534 stored in the module. It has been bounced around to a few shops but it ends up being a quick fix. Let's get after it. -Enjoy!

I work flat rate if somebody cut a leg off a fuse I'd probably hit him in the head with a 4 lb hammer. If you really want to mess with somebody run a wire from the hot side of a turn sig bulb over to the horn. When they activate their turn signal the horn goes beep beep beep with the blinker lol

I worked at a dealership in my younger days, I drove a Jeep Wrangler with a soft top and soft doors. A fellow technician thought it was funny to take my doors off and hide them. One day, I had enough. I went and took his fuel pump fuse out of his fuse box. I left for the day and the next morning, I got to work and his truck was in the same spot.
He approached me and asked if I would help put a fuel pump in his truck.. I said no and gave him the fuse. He was furious so I simply told him. Leave my doors alone and he never touched them again. 😂

In a shop environment I absolutely can’t stand guys messing with tool boxes or personal cars, I love shenanigans in the shop but my car and my tool box are off limits lol, I do however in my younger days, I can’t remember what this older tech did that pissed me off but after he left for the day I came across a dead bird in the parking lot and sure as hell duct tapped that bad boy to the locker on his tool box 🤣

As opposed to Adam Savage's "Failure is always an option." But experiments and repair are two different things!
Rather than spread the legs on the fuse, you can twist them which will add even more resistance on loose fuses.
It looked like that was actually what he did.
@@Troy_Built nope. He twisted one one way and the the other the opposite direction. What I am saying is you twist them like a cork screw which will force better contact on loose spade connectors.

I believe you find broken wires because you LOOK! I suspect others are always expecting a fancier reason instead of corroded connectors and broken wires. That's why you're so good at this (partly.) Nice work
Also his experience with the climate he’s in has a lot to do with it. Here in New Mexico, rust and corrosion are really not a thing. We get surface rust but that’s about it
I suspect many "mechanics" only look for answers with a scan tool, while Eric adds his eyesight in to the 'scan'.
Yes I don't know who told most younger new so called Mechanics you can find all your problems in a Computer screen without a little work into it like ERIC always ends up doing to actually find and repair problems like this 🤔.

The issue is happening on brand new vehicles as well so rust and broken wiring wouldn’t be the culprit. Most likely a switch.
I’m a garage door tech and I love saying “there’s your problem lady” when I find something wrong with a door.
I use "there's your problem lady" as much as possible in all walks of life. It's a special club we're part of.
I find myself saying it almost daily
And with my mom, this line would work as her garage door got stuck in the down position. (This was after arriving from a cruise.)

At 11:09 - the frame has had the classic "DuPont overhaul" - good one. From what I saw of the red exterior, it looks like it's well-preserved, what a shame that so much of it is rusted and corroded. Anyway, congrats on finding 3 cases of broken wires in a single day.

We had one on the lot like this a few years ago, 2005 Chevy 3/4 ton, about same miles as this one. It was a plow truck, rotted to hell underneath I was tasked with a no start, no comm issue. Mice chewed the wiring under the underhood fuse box. Fixed that, got it running only to find out it had no brakes because the lines were all rotted out. You could see through the bed on this guy. I got it safe to drive so it could go back to the auction and be someone else's problem
Typical plow truck. They dont see alot of miles but boy do they get beat on. And the belly of the trucks are rusted out big time. Never buy a plow truck. The dead giveaway is the 2 cuts on the front bumper lip for the plow hook up.

Great video. The used car guy is king right now. I just sold a ten year old low mileage mint vehicle for shockingly close to what I paid for it new. You can’t really blame this Chevy for spending its whole life in your horrific state of salt and corrosion but the dealer definitely swept things under the rug.
That came from a dealer that sells Chevys brand new. That’s the sad part. Not a side car lot… you’d expect better from a Chevy dealer

It feel it is time too get rid of this truck. I am grateful that you were able to finally fix the issue he had at hand. As well as solve a new problem with a temporary problem. It is my hope that the customer was not to upset with you for finding the new issue.

I have a 2009 GMC SIERRA 1500 with the same issue. I replaced the trailer brake controller but that didn't fix. I checked the fuses first and they are good and I hooked it up to a trailer and all of the lights worked. Some videos mentioned a dirty connector back at the module so that is my next stop. Thanks for the video.

What gets me is why did the dealer tech replace the module and not check powers and grounds first? What did the tech tell the customer? "Sorry sir, I replaced the module and it still doesn't work."

Your electrical diagnostic skills are unmatched Eric. Clearly self proclaimed "technicians" at area shops, including dealerships are simply parts replacers. Every time a parts replacement doesn't cure the problem, they raise their hands and give up! Or as one of your recent videos shown a dealer said "you need an entire engine harness lady". Why, because they don't have the knowledge or is looking for that quick fix to save labor costs. Those poor customers always end up at your shop for a reasonable final repair. You put those "techs" to shame!!!! Great work sir!
I have an 02 Plow all its life. It's rusting out but it still works and I don't use it for any profit, just to plow our church parking lot.. Getting so I work on it more than it's worth to me so thinking of selling it.. Thanks for the training I got today...

Very good old style craftsmanship. I bought a 2009 Silverado 2500HD low km’s in Panama. 1st thing you figure out here, mechanics like to cut wires and only “finger-twisting” them together. No tape or shrink pvc to isolate the wires. I did actually retire here 3 years ago. Thought f just pay a couple of dollars to the shop if something comes up. You are lucky here if your car or truck doesn’t burn down or the mechanics break something, they should not touch at all. Now. After learning my lessons, I started to buy all tools and fix it myself. That’s in the end even cheaper. - Had my truck in for erratically not starting. Burned out connection box because one of this twisted blank connections touch metal. Paid $450 to get my truck back with all error messages on the dashboard. - Right. Next day, I was under the dashboard, in the engine bay myself. Clearing out all codes and messages - except the trailer brake service message. Tomorrow I check if the mechanic pulled off the connector on the switch on the dashboard 1st thing in the morning. - Thanks for the detailed information on this video, sir!
WHEW! Good save on the no start Eric! Thumbs UP man!👍 I have GM fuel pump fixer that I keep hang on the wall in my shop. It is a chunk of Maple Firewood! A few whacks with that will usually get it going again LOL
I got more than one customer driving around with twisted legs on the fuses and relays. They don't want to replace the fuse box, and it's still working.

You mentioned you're lucky or words similar its got nothing to do with it your years of skills and knowledge allow you to almost know where the problem is already and thats what people pay for. Corrosion is such a common problem, particularly anywhere they use salt like an asphalt resurfacing tool. In wiring and this goes back decades it can cause weak grounds that can lead to all kinds of sketchy glitches that will lead to wild accusations by your junior mechanic at the dealer. The dealer will typically just cob a hillbilly solution together and then integrate it to your car/truck and return the vehicle to you: except now it has cobby wiring. SEE: Trailer brake module fixes from previous wrench puller wannabes.
Tracking down Electrical glitches and failures is the #1 failure in modern automobiles simply because the modern car has so much MORE wiring than they used to 50 yrs ago.
You sir are a genius when it comes to tracking down these faults. Electrical problems is the most common fault and it is also the most improperly repaired automotive break down in today's cars, often costing the customer thousands in the process. Tracking down electrical issues is a true art form, and that folks is WHY there are automotive Electrical rebuild shops, that is their specialty and that is what they do.
Eric is an Electrical Wizard amongst common mechanics when it comes to finding the sources of these gremlins that live in the modern automobile, hats of to you sir. You triumph where most R+R (Remove and Replace) dealer mechanics FAIL, they usually just fully load the "Parts Cannon" mostly because the dealer has a full inventory of parts to load the parts cannon with. Brilliant work sir.
It's always a learning experience watching your videos even for a retired auto electrician thank you so much for keeping my brain working as I try to solve the problem as you are doing so👍
If you own a vehicle and live in the rust belt beware of the dreaded green crusties and missing fuse contacts/legs, and every other nasty, rotted, mostly hidden, tank trap you can possibly imagine!😳 I own a 98 TJ and a 96 Ranger and Fluid Film is my best friend! 😆 Great vid, Eric! 👍

Nothing like an SMA video to bring all good thing back into perspective! After seeing "someone" in the land of oranges, forcefully tappity tapping "pre-seized" brake pads into their bracket, over malformed abutment clips.... All I could think of was all of us rust belt mechanics cringing, as we're beating the crap out of rust jack pads that are completely seized....Dodeedooo! (You need to school that boy!)
Your wisecracking funny quips and general clowning around is exactly what we used to do at my old shop. I would so enjoy to sit back and BS with you I came through all the era’s of automobile Repair from the cars of the 60s and I’m still working on them today, learned feedback control carburetors, throttlebody injection, port fuel injection, Still working on them today at the ripe old age of 67! You truly are my kind of guy!
My grandson got a 20 year old Chevy truck when he turned 16. After a while he had problems keeping his headlights on. The relay would jiggle loose. I ordered a used under the hood fuse box from ebay that had really good close up photos in the ad. We spent $20 or $30 and no more problems. It was pretty easy to change and now have a lot of extra fuses and relays. He's 20 yrs. old now and still loves that old truck.
I'm in my 60s, 21 years in the USAF, and luckily never lived anywhere they used salt in the winter. I retired to Idaho, and I love the fact we have 60, 70, 80 year old vehicles with surface rust, and not much else. Right now I'm searching for a late 50s Willys pickup to build, and there are quite a few around here. Life is good.

just spliced it to the power window switch ground.... and works like new...

I had a reverse light out and it turned out to be a broken wire. Up above the headliner! I was able to trace it thanks to all your videos! It still took ages to fix it and get it all back together. I can't imagine how much of this stuff you deal with every day!
I've had a few folks come into my shop for second opinions on used cars they're looking to buy recently. A couple were just ridiculous and don't come anywhere close to passing a state inspection. It definitely is a rough time to buy a car right now.
What's causing that? I look on Craigslist from time to time and immediately close it down when I see what kind of money people are asking for.

One reason could be the absurd delivery time on brand new vehicles. Just spoke to a guy who's in the market for a car to hold him over until his new one is delivered. "Date not specified"...
@@PJBonoVox new vehicles are supposedly being held up by this "chip shortage" or whatever. It just seems everyone is using the Corona virus as an excuse but there could be some truth to it. Either way, new vehicles aren't plentiful so used ones are selling high. When dealers are tacking an extra 40 grand onto a new Toyota RAV4, you too might consider paying more than what you think is fair for a used vehicle instead. 😂
South Main Auto.. Yep got burned one time a long time ago. Since then I always check for power on both sides of the fuse and then pull the fuse to make sure both legs of the fuse are there.. Like you said it's funny until it's you, then it's not funny..
Worked at a transmission shop as R&R guy for bench rebuild techs. They diagnosed need for rebuild on trans and did so. I installed the rebuilt auto trans and had no trans electrical function at all. And no shift of course. Yes it was a used car deal too. You guessed it. Missing leg on the trans fuse that forward probe tested just fine with test light. One side of fuse socket was spread open. We theorized, that in a past life, the vehicle had an aftermarket accessory power tap wire jammed into the trans fuse socket along with the fuse blade itself thereby spreading open the fuse socket. Wire got removed and trans problems started. It was a Mitsubishi. Trying to say it was a Montero. Luckily no corrosion so we were able to re-tension the trans fuse socket contacts without having to get any additional parts. Additional parts, lol.
Eric. The best video I have seen that addresses my trailer break control module issue and the rest of the video where Shi* happens with the fuel pump. The way you step by step narrow down the issue. I have a similar issue but have only 8 volts at the TBCM and 12.4 out of the fuse box fuse. Has to be in the line somewhere from box to TBCM. Working on that after the rain stops.

What we loved is that we do the same thing you do, say the same things, and love what we do as well. There need to be more people like you sharing the knowledge, and taking pride in their work. Awesome! I purchased a 2018 Silverado 1500 in March of 2021. I'm trying to track down no power to the trailer brakes (2021 trailer). Also have "Service trailer brake system" every time at startup. Thanks for the video, I learned some sh*! I hope this will do it for me. You're awesome.

i have bought many vehicles over the years (plenty of junk, some new to me, and brand spanking new) so here's a used truck dealer gem: a 2011 chevy 2500HD 6.0 gas with a service body, ran ok for a few months. later when running sluggish i went to run the scan tool, obd II connecter MIA as in NOT there no cut wires either. this is the only truck i have seen with the missing plug out of over 20 cars and trucks i have worked on over the years. so now i look for the plug FIRST thing!
Another day in the “salt belt “ & I was ready to lose my marbles too ! Good work Eric !

But I’ll tell ya, I’ve watched every one of your videos (no exaggeration) and I just hover in the background never saying much. But I wanted to thank you for teaching me and many others over the years on how to be a better home mechanic. Especially with the Chevy vids. I’ve been able to keep my dads 08 Chevy up and running because of you. I live in TN so everything is easier for me but I digress. Oh yeah that rotting fuse box is a common problem even here in east Tennessee, they're available online used for around a hundred dollars... just make sure they're from a really dry climate lol
Nice video. I have exactly the same truck, same color, only mine is a 2012. It’s never let me down. Recently my service trailer brake control warning came on but luckily went away. Now I’ll have a better idea about trouble shooting if it happens again.

Once competed in a technician challenge through my employer at the time and the Eaton rep bugged the fuse panel for the automated transmission by doing exactly that removed 1 leg of the fuse but my “Memaw” taught me to always remove and inspect the fuse great video! I hope they’re some up and coming techs that are really paying attention to your videos we all can learn and refresh our noodles

Watching you banging the shit out of that fuel tank made me laugh my ass off. It reminded me of an old black and white tv we used to have. Every time the screen would go fuzzy, we would slap the hell out of the side until it fixed the problem. Lol!!!

Had a 12 inch b&w tv for 17 years. Every time it was turned on the sound went off within a minute. One quick smack on the side and the sound came back on till the set was turned off. Did that every night for 17 years.
I wanted to tell you that I'm a fairly new subscriber . I love your electrical process thinking analysis. Although mine has always been in the industrial HVAC trade and in A/C voltage. Although some control valves were 0 - 10 VDC. 0 being fully closed and 10 v being fully open. Thanks for your videos and know that your followers appreciate them. I'm retired now so they are very entertaining.

These types of videos are informative as well as entertaining. I got the opportunity to mess with fuses, and their sockets, this past weekend. My mower won't charge the battery and I thought I would check fuses, (no wiring diagram available). They were very dirty so I pulled each one out individually and then scraped the contacts. Started it up and put through its paces, only to have it die in about 10.2 seconds. With the key on removed the fuses and put them back in. With one of them I heard the fuel pump click on. Restarted and off I went. Thank you sir.

Even if they look OK, you know where to look because you have seen enough of them.
I work in industrial and lab gear and it's the same there.
Most intermittent faults are dirty connectors or broken wires and every unit has it's spot for failing.
