A bad manager being shifted from location to location instead of just straight up fired is a terrible company policy. Glad the rest of the coworkers were nice at least.

On one hand, yeah, you're definitely right. But on the other hand, there are different brands of upper management directly supervising this manager. Some would cut them off completely, others have more of a nurturing sense, where they figure 'maybe it was the environment or other coworkers or any number of factors' want to find the best fit for that person in the company. In any company, upper management gets points and positive repute for promoting within the company, so those types of managers will try to hold onto their underlings longer and try to steer them in the right direction. Others are more concerned with the immediate bottom line and will cut them off then and there. There's 2 brands of managers and neither of them are right or wrong, just difference in personalities and goals.

They also do not just fire someone randomly, they make strikes to a worker based off of their actions and so many strikes get you fired. I’m sure if this was known and continued behavior he was let go

Lnm&m Faulk if you watched her other videos you might already know, but that’s false. You can’t go around saying that you’re Cinderella for example, but you can still post about the job. Besides, she doesn’t work there right now, so she couldn’t get fired. Don’t trust those videos. They lie about a lot of stuff.

i was a Character Attendant in fall 2016 and i swear you look so familiar! But totally understand, i hated hollywood and vine sooo much, i used to get stressed out when i got dining shifts. I literally had someone pull goofy out of rotation because she went to the bathroom when he was coming around (i warned her in advance goofy would be right back so dont go anywhere). I asked her not to touch my characters and to be careful. She went off at me and called the manager over. The manager spoke to me and was like "what you did was the right thing but in order to keep the guests happy i have to pretend im giving you a talk". Like wow, I had so many rude guest stories!

I’m sure the character suits at Disney are air conditioned, but I recommend getting a job as the local easter bunny or something before you audition. My work has an easter bunny during the easter season and asked me if I wanted to do it. I said yes, not knowing that it would be 90 degrees all week and I would have no air conditioning while outside for 5 hours at a time. I wanted to be a Disney mascot for a while too, but that experience was the most painful thing I’ve ever done.

OMG - I feel for you! That story is so similar to when I was a manager at the Indianapolis Zoo and I had a captain who was in charge of up to 4 performer/keeper teams (they had a zoo theme, so the attendants were called "keepers"). I was also in charge of face characters, greeters, and the photo crew, etc. well, on a particularly hot day, when we had hot weather time limits in place, I gave my captain specific reminders about shift limits.
It was our second set of 30 minutes when in the back of my mind I started to think, "Humm, I have not seen Shivers the Polar Bear..." So, I casually started to move through the zoo along the set pattern (rotation) and was surprised not to find Shivers or the Keeper or the Captain anywhere they should be. Starting to get concerned, I asked one of my photo crew if they had seen Shivers and they recalled seeing them in a totally different part of the zoo.
By this time it was well into the break time and I decided to break the illusion and used my walkie-talkie to call the keeper directly. My unit could sound on any of the staff's units, but you tended to not want to do that as it was obvious to guests that something was up, especially if it was right in the middle of a hug or photo. I don't get the keeper but the manager answers!?!.
"Where is Shivers the Polar Bear?", I ask. Long story short, the manager had no idea as they were back in the air conditioned staff training lounge. They had totally forgotten about Shivers and another fur character that I did encounter who was also about to hit their time limit too, and this was deep in the park, far from back-of-house or out of view areas. Talk about irresponsible.
Side note: I actually asked a little girl if she had seen Shivers the Polar Bear and she pointed me in the right direction, so cute!
I eventually encountered Shivers and their keeper nearly 20 minutes into their normal break time. Shivers was out around 50 minutes and despite signing that they were OK, was in obvious need of a break. It turns out that the keeper had been switched out by the captain and there had not been the reminder of duration or time limits mentioned, much like your story.
Luckily, I had back-of-house keys to the back door of the penguin pavilion which we happened to be very close to, so we told the kids that Shivers was going to go play with the penguins. We ducked inside and into the refrigerated mechanical section where we were able to cool Shivers down. The performer was very hot and we sat there till her color returned to normal and I gave her a very long break and had the zoo nurse make a quick check to be sure she was fine.
When you mentioned wanting to do a good job and everything that is exactly how my performer was, but she was showing early signs of heat exhaustion. Talk about dedication! Needless to say I had some words with the captain, especially when she still had the keeper's walkie-talkie.
To this day I still do not know how Shivers the Polar Bear made it to that portion of the park.
The one benefit of being Shivers was that Polar Bears are all white and that kept the outfit much cooler longer and it was one of two outfits that had vent fans in the head which also helped.

When I was a little kid we went to Disneyland for Easter. 1970- They had the Easter bunny! We lined up for a meet and photo- The bunny was in the sun and it was HOT. after about 20 minutes in line- no idea how long the poor cast member had been out- The Ebunny starts to frantically signal his partner... The partner kept talking to a guest- The Ebunny continues... then suddenly lurches forward with the sound of a horrible wretch from under the head... and Vomit spews out from the neck and all down the front of the costume. That was a memorable Easter.

I wonder if Disney could make an app where it would allow you to find the character you want to see. So Everytime someone walks onto guest areas, the costume activates the "character locator" hidden somewhere on the costume, and is connected to the app. I was only able to see two characters when we visited back in 2008, but I'd love to take my kid to see Cinderella at a specific park if I could someday.

This time was just too rough, and i agree, not okay - but in this job it is required that we hold hands, link arms with, etc. our coworkers

Right! I've had food jobs where I'd have to stay hours after my already 9 hour shift often with no break. The last bit with the having to stay 15 minutes over is a normal thing in restaurants outside of theme parks. I'd love to work at a theme park restaurant compared to a public one. It's awful.

I had 3 roommates do QSFB during my program, and two stayed at their same location the entire time, but the other one was constantly getting deployed (she was stationed outdoor cart at DAK, then to epcot for Food and Wine, then back to DAK outdoor then Dinosaur / Rockasarus something or other). It was slightly stressful for her to change so much, but that rarely happens!

Girl, I used to be a character performer in the DCP, so I totally relate to all of this. 🤣 And why is everyone’s first day at Hollywood and Vine such a nightmare???? The first time I was sent there I was emergency pulled to a character I had never spent time with before and they literally had me get dressed at costuming and then drove me over on the pargo in costume and that was all the time I had to look at the character profile and learn the signature. As soon as I got to HnV they threw me to the wolves in the restaurant. I barely made it in time for my first set, so literally all I knew about the restaurant and the rotation was seeing the map through a character head. It was ROUGH. But thank god, right after the set the captain walked me through the restaurant and everything turned out fine. But it was SO. FREAKING. STRESSFUL.

    • @olivia_simone

Girl I feel ya. I'm a 3x DCP Alumni and last year was a Character Att. I worked with the Winnie the Pooh gang at Crystal Palace several times and definitely had to help walk new cast members around while they met guests. But it was VERY fun and heaven forbid any attendant to yank and drag the character. Sorry that happened! Love your video!

One time, when I was running the cash register at the emporium, I had a guest, whos child tried to steal a keychain. They held it under the counter, where “I couldn’t see,” and right after I gave the mother the total, I asked the little 3/4 year old did you want to buy that?” And her face turned as red as Ariel’s hair, and she slowly placed it on the counter, and i kid you not, the look on that mothers face is burned in my memory!

    • @olivia_simone

There were definitely several things in play! For one, you're not allowed to call out during your last shifts of the program or else your program is considered incomplete and you're put on restricted rehire status (making it harder to get hired for Disney in the future). Because my schedule was up in the air, I didn't know which shift would be my last, and on my actual last day of work, I didn't know until 40 minutes before my shift was over that it was my last shift (I was juggling trading / giving away shifts). So I couldn't risk calling out and being considered incomplete.
Secondly, I should have gone to the doctor (and maybe gotten a note that I didn't have to work) but 1) I didn't have a car or transportation to urgent care 2) I knew I would be leaving within a few days so I could wait to see a doctor at home 3) I didn't realize how truly sick I was until I got home, went to urgent care, and was on antibiotics for two weeks
I know that given a doctors note, employees can take more than three days off at Disney, but because of my circumstances, I wasn't able to do that! At the time I'm not sure if I even knew that was an option as well.
Now I know to just go to the doctors and not wait until I get SO sick!

Oh goodness, well I just felt so sorry for you whilst listening to your story. I do still feel that the onus shouldn’t have been on you - I would have hoped that someone in authority seeing you like that could have made an exception and sent you home without it affecting your program :(
But you know what, I’ve done exactly the same and worked through feeling sick. I think we all have. It would be so hard to have the factors you mentioned to consider & being so ill you can’t think straight! Credit to you for your work ethic, but in terms of your career(s) ahead of you - always health first!

I have a question how do the characters make the kissing sound? Like Chip and Dale they make a poping sound and Goofy when he kisses makes a sound that sounds like a dog toy. I find it awesome but I am curious as well.

If it's the same sound consistently, then I'd assume a squeaker or perhaps electronic variation. A very famous squeaker suit is Telephone the Dutch Angel Dragon. If you want, I could look into the mechanics of a squeaker?

Given she talks about preserving Disney magic in this video, I'm not sure why you're asking her questions that would require that she BREAK that magic. She literally said "I won't even say that I was a character, I'm gonna say I hung out with them" because she's not interested in risking it. Disney's really strict about this stuff, and we don't know what was in her employment contract. She could get sued.

The person who follows/attends/assists the character probably pushes a button that triggers the sound from the character's costume. They are always watching the character and guest interactions.
OR there is a button inside the suit the character can press to make the sound.

Omg, that attendant holds lives in their hands. In the furry community there's a similar hobby called fursuiting, which uses full-body costumes and head pieces. If you are assisting (called being a Handler) a suiter, you don't mess around. If they say they need a break, you take them to a break area. If they've been going a long time, you tell them it's time to take a break. Glad to hear Disney sets decent cap times and requiring frequent breaks for full costume characters. People can end up in the hospital or ambulance from heat stroke and/or dehydration.

We went to a character breakfast and Chip and Dale were there. Dale put his hand out for a high five but my one year old didn't understand and tried to hand him a piece of her sticky syrup waffle 😅 The character pulled away so fast, probably didn't want to get his costume dirty 😬
We just went to a random restaurant on our way out of town and ended up at a character breakfast on accident lol but man I could tell those characters worked really hard to make it so fun for the kids!

I'm a current CM myself working in Costuming, but before that I worked in QSFB. My home location at F&B was at Saratoga Springs and I honestly freaking _loved_ it! But I picked up an EHH shift at Liberty Tree once as a Steward during peak dinner hours....the true definition of a hell shift 😱

As a character performer I completely understand this 🙃 I had a similar experience at chef Mickey’s. A good attendant/captain can make or break your shift
Also you should have totally been given an ROS during the second story

    • @olivia_simone
      @olivia_simone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ugh I'm sorry you had a similar experience :/ And yeah... there were a couple times on my program where I should have been given an ROS... Once I was in tears as I was performing because the costume hurt so bad (and honestly, hadn't fit me since training but during training they just told me to make it work and they'd figure it out later). Looking back I should have stuck up for myself but when you're a new performer and a CP where all the full timers already hate you, i didn't want to make waves 😅
