    Thank you for this fantastic video. I've lived I Sanderstead since 1986, it was great to be reminded of what it used to be like!

    Love all of your videos Phil. But this one is of great interest as I grew up in Sanderstead in the 70's and 80's. Went to Gresham, played countless hours of football at the rec, was a member of Sanderstead Cricket Club. I moved to the US in the 90's but still come back and visit regularly. Priscilla's Tea room used to be a public toilet of all things!

      Great to hear that, Dave. Sadly Priscilla’s has now closed, unable to compete with the coffee shops in the parade. I am planning another walk in the area at some point - an update, plenty of others to do before then! 😊

    The site where Waitrose is currently situated was Do It All in the late 80's early 90's. Both myself and my brother worked there. It had another building attached to the back of it which you could access from going into the loft of Do It All. The building was derelict at the time. Also the fire station which was pulled down for flats to me created.

    Thank you for this video. I was brought up in Sanderstead during the 50s 60s and 70s and remember what a nice area it was. Whilst I came to live in France in 1981, my parents sold up and moved to the south coast in 1993. I know all the buildings you featured, there seems to be much that has not changed although of course shops and businesses come and go. I remember we used to go to mass at the Holy Family Church on Limpsfield road. My parents used to call this church the "Skep" ( why, I dont know, dont even know what the that word means !) I remember going to funerals in the Church Way cemetery, I remember being attacked at Sanderstead pond by people with stones and having to run to the nearest pharmacy in Cranleigh Parade for help. We actually lived a little further down from this part of Sanderstead, however (Heathhurst Rd and The Ridge Way). I spent early years at Saint Annes College (now demolished - and I took hundreds of photos of this building when I learnt it was going to be demolised in the late seventies). This was just opposite Sanderstead station. I was baptized at St Gertrude's church, a little further down the road and my parents were married in this same church. For part of my life in Sanderstead I used to be a member of the Bourne Society which was interested in local history - during my school holidays I used to work pubs at Warlingham (Whyte Lion). As you so rightly state there was never a pub in Sanderstead !

    • @philswallow
      @philswallow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, some amazing recollections there! St. Anne's College is one building that stood out so well, it had a wonderful location and was very stylish in its design. It does disappoint me when buildings get demolished (I mention this on many of my videos!) - but I understand why this has to happen. I am a member of the Bourne Society and they do a great job of promoting our local history. I'm glad you enjoyed my video, thank you 😊

    Hi Phil - enjoyed the video - Dick Townley's closed about 10 or 12 years ago. Would have been good to have walked down Old Saw Mill Lane as some lovely old buildings there. The cricket field is like a Sussex village ground dropped into Croydon. They sell beer at the clubhouse - probably breaking the covenant.

      Glad you enjoyed it Chris, there will be a follow-up at some point where I branch out a bit and also include the parade down Sanderstead Hill. If I’m allowed to access the lane and cricket ground I’d love to include that too!

    The Queen Mother donated some some money towards the upkeep of the blue clock at the top of All Saints Church. Her ancestors ( (I believe her grandparents )are buried in those grounds) . You can visit the grave. I imagine the graveyard opposite was part of the church until they decided to build a road through it . The pond was used as a watering hole back in the day for horses and carts travelling through. I hope that area is never used for development. The second highest point in London is in the Sanderstead plantation. Worth a visit just to see the view. Thanks for this incredible history !

    Where waitrose is now, used to be the express dairy. I think it closed in the early 70s to become a DIY store. I was a milk boy for them in the late 60s earning 10s for a weekend.
    The Charingtons in the village weren't the brewers, they were the coal and oil merchants.

    Behind the blue fencing at the top left of Sanderstead Hill there was a garden centre perhaps belonging to Telkamps?

    • @philswallow
      @philswallow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the garden centre was next to where the large house and blue fencing is, currently. I remember Telkamps and also Relf’s

    • @chrisgrey9756
      @chrisgrey9756 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@philswallow I think it was Telkamp's. Relf's I believe was down Purely Oaks Road, past St Mary's Church, near the junction with St Mary's Road and behind St Anne's College. I enjoyed the whole film, and as you walked down (what I remember calling) Sanderstead parade I was thinking 'that used to be Dick Townley's', just as the the moment you said it.

    Methodist Church Hall was where they had an occasional 'dance' featuring a real live band. I went to a few in around 1967-8, with one memorable one where the bands' one guitar amplifier blew up, and the lead singer put out an appeal to the audience to see if anyone had an amp at home they could borrow for the evening. One was in fact sourced, and while we were waiting for it to turn up, the lead singer told jokes from the stage. Brilliant. The band was called Mud!!!!!

    • @philswallow
      @philswallow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, as I’m the actual group, Mud? I seem to recall that Les Gray, the lead singer, was local?

    Brilliant video Phil. I remember the 234 bus queuing at the cross roads which is now the roundabout on my way to school In purley. I also remember sanderstead hill was a tunnel of trees until perhaps the late 70s. Dick townley sports actually moved a few doors and was there for a while.

    • @philswallow
      @philswallow  2 ปีที่แล้ว
