The jump serve is the riskiest, but more rewarding, serve in volleyball. In this tutorial, I break down the technique of the jump spin serve, from the toss to the approach, and how to contact the ball to make sure it goes over the net. I also talk about how to get your spin serve to curve and move away from the passer.
There are a couple big components that go into making a jump serve effective, and in this video we will learn where to place the toss, and how to get started with jump serving if you are new to trying it. I hope you find these tips helpful!

Jump serving is high-risk/high reward, but like any other serve, the toss is the most important part, both in generating power and in minimizing errors. I hope you find this helpful!

      Thanks for this video, Sarah!
      May I ask one thing?
Is it important to toss with the hand that you swing?
I'm a lefty too, but I'm used to toss the ball with the right hand, because I play table tennis since 7

I have seen it done both ways. I like tossing with my hitting hand, just to get it up and back faster, but it's ok to toss with your opposite hand too.

the thing i like about learning the jump serve is it really helps your spike timing. if you can hit a super terrible serve toss, you can hit almost every ball!

Super useful, thank you Sarah. I didn't realise this is what makes the ball curve.
Gosh i am really struggling with the rhythm on my approach though, i'll check out your other videos and see if there is some advice on vood aproaches.
    Much love!

It's so important to wait for the toss/set, and THEN start your approach. By waiting to see the set, you can get the acceleration you need right through the swing.

This is really helpful thanks for putting it together!! I tried to teach myself the basics volleyball after watching Haikyuu by learning how to jump serve and after two years of trying I still struggle with the toss about half the time. The idea of separating the toss and the approach is actually huge, I never thought of it that way, can’t wait to get on the court to practice this now!!!

It doesn't have to be big. It is a very subtle move that is amplified as the ball travels away from you.

This video is actually really helpful, since watching haikyuu I wanted to learn how to do a jump serve rather than the granny underhand serve that I’ve done my whole life just playing casually with family 😂
