I snagged this kit, after I saw your preview the first time. Nice kit, but, there are a lot of tiny parts!! Spent more than a few minutes retrieving parts from the carpet monster. It is a very impressive kit!!

I bought the 350th Tirpitz super cheap from a friend. Then found a 350th Yamato for a bargain price just a few weeks after. Not into ships really but it is a great way to learn stuff, both about history and building models going out of your comfort zone.

Great review Nigel of what appears to be a really well engineered kit. I’ve built a couple of large 1/350 scale ships in the past and as another person posted build them in subassemblies where possible, it helps keep the frustration level down and before you know it its complete and then you will be ready to build fully rigged plank on frame wooden kits. I have three in progress, two years on one, about 4 years on another and one more I keep looking at that is still in the box lol.

Pretty impressive kit . the small deck guns are amazing (look like 20mm oerliken (spelling?) Cannon copy ) they have zero mold shift and no flash ,very nice ! Imagine if revell made this kit .. Imagine the clean up lol !
Great review Nigel , I wouldn't buy this kit but I would be happy to build it if I had it ,and that's a first for a ship kit .

You are right about soul sucking when it comes to these ships.....I am in the middle of a 1/350 Tirpitz. I wanted to super detail this boat. Bought the Veryfire super detail photoetch set comes with brass barrels wooden deck, railing etc. That photoetch set alone has over 800 pcs. Literally took 8 hrs just to do the life boats. Six months in and you tend to get tired of it more quickly. Best advise I 100% agree with you on is build something else smaller at the same time. This way you get to still enjoy your hobby and it doesn't feel like a job. KUTGW Nigel. Greetz from the great white north...AKA Canada

Boatbuilder myself, I whole heatedly recommend you start with the hull, and screw that down on a sturdy wooden base. Then you build the rest in modules, divide it up in mini models. and place them om the hull for safe keeping. that way, when it gets to much, you can pause it and build a nice 1:72 airplane or something else that tickles your fancy. Im sure you've seen Stefan Carlssons builds on flory models. he has a good system down (and the patience) mind you thats a beast of a kit to start with...

I like wooden decks. I have another ship project HMS Nelson WW2 1/200 scale trumpeter kit, with all the extras lol happy moderling

Great review Nigel. I love ships but like you have trouble staying focused on them. I just finished a 1/350 Dreadnought for a friend who did me a huge favor. I did it straight through and near the end I just wanted to get the darn thing finished. If it was for me it would not be finished yet. I would have done a couple of planes in between.

Nigel I am in the process of completing the 1/350 Scharnhorst by Dragon with MK detail set and wooden deck. I have been at it almost a year on and off. You really don't want to start this as a build along! Getting extra detail sets really make ship models stand out. The first thing one should do before the actual build begins is how is one going to display the model, water line or full hull? If full hull are you going to display it with pedestals or dry dock block or the kit supplied base. I for one like dry dock blocks along the keel. Plus it's wise to have the model displayed in a case. PS if you think this is a big model think of the 1/200 scale one. I have the USS Arizona build going on as well. Keep up the good work my friend.

    • @richardbaxter2057
      @richardbaxter2057 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Couldn’t agree more re “How are you going to display it”! I purchased Tirpitz and Bismarck in this series, for about £40 each.....and now I’m wondering where I’m going to put them....a bargain buy with nowhere to go....😂😂😂 Nevermind, I got some 1/700 ones and now some 1/2000 ones (all Flyhawk).....eventually I’ll build one and be able to display it.....🤪 Buy a mansion Nigel, that’ll solve the room versus display issues.....crowdfund for a large Country Pile....🤪😂😂😂

Hi Nigel, The holes you were wondering about are called "Hawse holes". I don't know how that
name came about but I remember that from building the USS Constitution "Old Ironsides". The
decking you keep wondering about is called "Diamond Plate" here in the states and comes in
all kinds of sizes depending upon its intended use. It was hard to tell what the size of it is on
this model as just as the camera focused on it you were on to something else. Anyway, great
review. Bill G. Linwood Kansas USA

On a side note, i dont have the patience to build any model that you build but still find your videos very entertaining.

Regarding the boats -- they were stored in a boat hanger aft below the flight deck, presumably because the muzzle blast from the main battery was too powerful to store them above deck amidships as on other warships.

If you want a challenge try the Hasegawa 1/350 Akagi. I didn’t go with the photo etch. I have no issues bending but the glue is misery to work with. If you get the fast drying thin CR glue it runs every. If you get the thick glue it takes forever to dry. I wish there was something better. So no photo etch for Akagi.

Hi Nigel, I hope that, when your eyes get better, you will build that ship, it's not really a mojo sucker, because it's like building different kits (turrets, superstructure, funnel, etc..), and the big hull doesn't have to be around all the time. I'm not really a finisher myself, but I started to build the older one a year and a half ago, w/photo etch (95% finished), I build other kits on the side, so it doesn't become a job, Kure pronounces k-uu-R-EH, not cure, and the Tamiya paint seems really dark compared to the photos, I lightened it with a bit in places. Photo-etch is the BDSM of modelers, pain that leads to pleasure... I hope you get better soon.Regards,

This looks like it will be a long journey and with the Hellcats et al still out there and wowing me (and many more I suspect), it would be a shame if this project sunk you (please excuse the pun) and you moved off the channel as a consequence. The separate bow is a catastrophy for what could have been a nice kit... The compound radiuses and fit don't match, across all the raised plating in two directions, horizontally and vertically. You can muddle the joint, but it will never disappear under even quick shaving light scrutiny: It can look ok in some photos, that's it... It will never have a sound hull surface unless you entirely redo the entire plating across the whole hull...
