The bow is the very front part of the ship, and the very back end of it is called the stern. The port side is the left and the starboard side is the right. Propellers are sometimes referred to as “screws.” The hull is the metal sides of the ship, the keel is the very bottom of it, and the superstructure is the top deck, usually made of wood. Smokestacks or funnels are large tunnels on top of the ship used to direct steam and smoke away from the deck. Masts are large wooden poles on the deck of the ship, usually used to hoist sails or hold a crow’s nest where crew members can see for miles around the vessel. Beam is a measurement that refers to the width of the ship. - บันเทิง

The Yamato was so valuable to the Japanese that it was in port most of the time, earning the nickname “Hotel Yamato”.
Lack of oil didn't help in that regard.
Yet many Japanese leaders despised the ship,
There is a museum of the Yamato in Hiroshima, where it was built, with a large scale model of it. Having watched this video, I regret not visiting it.😂
My grandfather served on the USS Bennington (CV-20) which was part of TF 58 and had bombs (of the many) that hit Yamato.
I thank him for his service! He made an incredible sacrifice putting his life on the line like that and war must've been horrifying! I bet he had some amazing stories to share. Thank you for sharing this with me!

First! For a people so disciplined the handling of ammo was disastrous as was their damage control. Amazing.

My dad was a torpedo bomber pilot in VT-84 on the USS Bunker Hill. They attacked the Yamato at 12:58pm on April 7, 1945. About half the pilots from this squadron were killed by a kamikaze strike May 11, 1945.
My goodness! Thank you for sharing that. Bless your father for his sacrifice, and rest in peace to the souls that were lost.

The first bomb to hit the Yamato was dropped by a Curtis Helldiver, piloted by a young naval aviator named Francis Ferry. For his actions on that day he received the Navy Cross. After the war, Ferry became a teacher, and was the Dean of Boys at my high school. If you look up his name on TH-cam, there is a short interview with him at age 100, telling the story of the sinking of Yamato.

In addition to being a particular province within Japan, "Yamato" was also an ancient and poetic name for the Japanese nation and/or people as a whole, which is another reason (besides it being the biggest and last battleship left) that its demise is often considered to symbolically mark the end of the Imperial Japanese Navy as a fighting force, or even the end of that era of Imperial Japan altogether.

Excellent presentation. However, the picture of USS Skate at 10:50 is that of the nuclear powered submarine (SSN-578). The USS Skate active in World War II was SS-305.

Another excellently researched and documented video of maritime history! This time touching on some naval history from WWII.
Since this was about Yamato and next week will be able the sinking of the Misashi did your research include another about the "other sisters" of the Yamato class?
A third battleshipof the same class was nearing completion when Japan lost four of her six Feet Carriers at Midway. It was known by this time that the Pacific war would be dominated by the aircraft carrier.
It was decided to convert the third sister into the first Super Carrier in the world. Never to be matched in size and abilities until the US built it's first Super Carriers many decades later.
This third sister was called Shinano. She didn't survive long after her commissioning as she was sunk by the US submarine Archerfish shortly after being launched and nearly complete. Shinano: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_aircraft_carrier_Shinano
Also a fourth sister had her keel laid down but was never more then just a keel and a yard number of #111. A fifth was planned but never begun. She has the yard numbered #797.
I did not know about these three other sisters - I'd only read of the two. Thank you so much for sharing this! I'll be pinning your comment for future listeners to reference.
I think the only issues I have with the episode are the images of USS Skate, IJN Kongo, and IJN Nagato. Kongo and Nagato weren't in their WWII reconstructions, Kongo was in her 1916 design, and Nagato was in her 1920s look if I recall correctly. And Skate, is a later boat entire, not the WWII Submarine.
Thank you for your input! The research into these two ships (Yamato and Musashi) is heavily debated, so I went based upon what I read, which was that USS Skate was a submarine. There's always the possibility I was wrong, so I appreciate your input. Have a great day!

You mentioned admiral Yamamoto at Tsushima. Fun fact. Then ensign Yamamoto lost 2 fingers there. One more and he’d of been sent home.
Yamamoto actually lost the battle of pearl harbor. The whole plan was dependent on the destruction of the uss enterprise and her 3 sister carriers pearl. They weren't at pearl to destroy. Yamato knew Japan was doomed when he heard the news.
I think japan was doomed from the moment they decided to attack america they were never gonna invade the us and were an order of magnitude less potent when it comes to industrial potential power and supporting allies
Terrorizing badly organised 1930s south east asian populations is not the same as facing a well supplied modern army
Nice presentation!! One of my favorite WW2 ships is USS Washington, who dueled the IJN Kirishima at Guadalcanal and sank her. Since you've taken an interest in WW2 battleships, I highly recommend checking out that story.

@@shipwrecksunday ah I see ... my condolences go out to the families who lost anyone there that day and for me the Arizona is a very interesting wreck to me as it was the first one I ever researched and same with the MV Sea Diamond I find it interesting that it was the same (I'm not fully sure if I am correct on this so I'm not sure if I'm right or wrong) length, width, height, beam and draft as the MV oceanos but double her tonnege ( not sure if I spelt it right)

More airplanes attacked the Yamato than took place in the Pearl Harbor attack After the event of carrier aviation the Yamato was called the right ship for the wrong war

Only Dogfights did Yamato's explosion perfect. The other explosions from the movies of 2005 and 2021 weren't done well. Though i really wanted to see how she sunk the Grambier Bay.

@@shipwrecksunday Pilots who were there attacking the Yamato said that 7 U.S. navy planes were knocked out of the air when the battleships forward magazines exploded.I thought you might want to know that.
I hope you are not giving up on civilian ships.
Don't worry, I will be returning to civilian ships after a few episodes of warships! Civilian ships, particularly ocean liners, are my passion! I want to get into doing a bigger mix of ships as we move forward, so maybe doing a warship one week, an ocean liner the next, then maybe a submarine - just so all of us have more variety!

Respectfully, there were a couple of photos that were not of the right era. The submarine Skate shown was not the WW II Skate, and the image of Manilla was a modern image, not of WW II. Same with USS Essex. Leyte is always pronounced “Laytay.” Otherwise interesting, except for a few other mistakes. Thanks.
