Woodturning - Yew Beauty
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a piece of yew burl into a live edge platter.
When woodturning a piece like I find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning.

It would be a centrepiece in a display cabinet. Too beautiful to fill it with things! It would however be taken out and held regularly as turned wood feels great in your hands, it naturally grounds you (yew)!

You did a fantastic job sir. The natural form sometimes are more beautiful the the neat counterpart. Wood is wood and when you turner guys and girls open the inside the soul of the wood it just takes my breath away.

I'm starting day two. I had to break yesterday, the boss (my wife), got home at about 7:00pm. You made a lot of videos, plus I got rerouted a few times. Still a huge fan, no circle in my future, and I will forge (oops that's metal I believe or glass, something with fire) on watching today.-G

I think this is my favorite one yet, not the least because I haven't done a full circumference live edge bowl so, I was taking notes! 🙂 Your steady control while "turning air" ws commendable. I also love (and use) your technique when doing your last cut on the inside: taking the last real cut with the normal edge presentation angle and then opening up to get a fresh part of the edge to take your very last, light cut. I've never used a negative rake scraper before, but I like your results. I might have to convert one of mine. Great work, as always. Cheers!
Thanks michael, it’s really great that you are taking something from my videos. It’s nice to know people find them useful. When doing an interrupted cut (air cuts) if the tool is presented correctly you shouldn’t feel too much in the way of chatter, if you do feel a bit just use very slight micro adjustments till that chatter goes and your tools in the correct position. Bowl like this are my favourites, partly because I seem to be the only woodturner who enjoys hand sanding. But mainly because the wood challenges you to find that best possible final form every time.

I’ve no idea what you all dislike about it. All aspects of woodworking are fantastic. Every piece you sand is an opportunity to learn to sand more effectively. All we are ever doing is getting rid a tool marks and buffing to a sheen/polish what’s not to like about that?

Great platter and great filming. Usually, extreme close ups on woodworking videos are hard to watch, you nailed it. The shots of you working the inside center of the platter were pure gold. The right focus and more importantly the right speed. I could see all the detail but not so slow that you bore the bollocks off people. Well done, liked and subscribed.
