    Absolutely beautiful. You should use a sand-o-flex like Phil Anderson does. It does an excellent job on bark and inclusions.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks James I appreciate your kind words. I don’t like those things at all unfortunately.. I believe Sanding should be controlled and precise process not erratic and aggressive. A piece like this should have a crisp defined edge not a sloppy softened edge.
      Give it a try next time to do a piece like this and compare a fine cut and effective hand sanding to a piece
      With a power sanded live edge.. I’m sure you’ll change your mind 😉

    Ahh, beautiful. The first swipe of oil is always my favourite.
    Is it because of the way you worked the wood that you sand it by hand compared to other pieces where you let the lathe do the walking?

    • @alun7006
      @alun7006 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably because of all the gaps around the edges - sanding with the lathe running would be hard work, give a poor finish and might damage the piece.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes as stated above it can be very dangerous to try to sand this with the lathe running. But if you watch any of my other videos you’ll notice I always sad by hand ( and also with the lathe running) this is because sanding with the grain will always give you better results than Sanding across the grain. 👍🏻

    burl wood and similar must be my favourite kind of wood from an aesthetic viewpoint. it looks into the messiness of life and brings out the beauty from that mess, and makes order from it and brings it to a higher place. i started watching this one after having really bad news (gov't backstabbing, endangering my retention of a roof over my head. i'm in canaduh. if people think canaduh is socialist, they're sorely mistaken). anyway, beside my point.
    it's so G-D pretty, i love it

    Jack, please don't think I'm a complete moron for asking this question, but how do you decide where to start on a piece of wood? Like how do you determine what will be the bottom or top? Is this something you just naturally knew how to do or did you learn through trial and error? I'm not a wood turner. I simply enjoy seeing the works of art you and others come up with. This was absolutely stunning! The finish was so shiny and burl is my favorite thing to see. The grain is always gorgeous. Thanks for reading my long comment. I hope you and your family are staying well and safe!

    Nice simple shape to show off otherworldly beauty of that burl. Love it.
    Currently working on pieces of a big cherry burl I cut up and am finding it difficult to actually commit to doing anything with them. The grain is so gorgeous, I don’t want to cut into it and destroy those patterns.
    For this piece, we’re you thinking “there goes more beautiful grain” as you dig deeper and deeper into the burl, or do you just ignore that impulse and go for it, knowing more burls will come your way?

      Thanks Tom. Great to have you along for the ride. I run a very buddy Woodturning business and make these videos in the very tight free time I can afford. They are made mostly as entertainment videos and not as tutorials. Unfortunately adding a voiceover to the videos would take a lot of time and additional editing. I am however always happy to answer any questions you might have about the processes you see me use in the video.

    Such a gorgeous piece of wood, actually my favorite kind. Birds Eye Maple. I kinda hate you lost so much of the prettiest parts. It's too bad you didn't have that bowl piece, idk what it's called but it allows you to take a bowl shape out and can turn that piece later. Although this came out awesome, I just would have loved to have some of what is now shavings lol.

    One dandy piece Jack! Was that oil prior to the spray lacquer or a sanding sealer? I am surprised to see you use even fine abrasive paste/wax over lacquer? Did you want more of a satin finish? Is that why? Just curious? Thanks
