I've said it before (old man, reserve the right to repeat myself). It's a good honest reaction, you cannot possibly like every song (I sure don't) but overall each album does have a few songs that have wide appeal. During this period I was very indifferent to Rush, wasn't really what I was listening to at the time (spoiler alert; Counterparts brought me back). Over time I find that I enjoy these albums (GUP to Roll the Bones) more and more. I love the fact that Rush has a wide and diverse appeal and have fans that are multi-generational, this is their legacy and it is beautiful. Keep up the great reactions Justin, I enjoy and respect your view.

@@SnowDogisVictorious Couldn't have said it better, I was also drawn to Blue Rodeo and The Hip (a real favourite of mine). It was an unbelievably busy period for me and did not attend very many concerts. The other bands that you mentioned, goes for me as well, no idea who they were. It just amazes me that Rush was still able to build a new base of fans and were able to continue to produce such a huge body of work; I can't think of any band of any genre that has been able to to that for over 40+ years. Cheers from Southern Ontario

You should do the discography of the band Kansas. So much great music. Everybody knows Dust in the Wind, Carry On Wayward Son and maybe a few others, but there is SO much more to their music its even funny. And they are STILL putting out great albums. Robbie Steinhardt their original violinist passed away last year. He was living down in your area for years and doing local gigs. Anyway if you’re not familiar with their catalog it is worth the trip through it.

Justin, man after Presto, I kind of bailed out on Rush for a while. While I don't begrudge their prerogative to experiment with the digital synth tech of the 80's (if you don't experiment, how do you know what works and what doesn't, right?) as a long time fan, I felt "burned" to an extent, after Signals, with what I felt were four "preachy" overly polished sort of paint by numbers kinds of albums, with just a few bright spots. So, by the time the 90's and Roll the Bones came out, they had already lost me, at least in terms of a "buy the album on the release date" kind of fan. As a result, in a sense, I'm on this 90's and 2000's part of the trek through Rush's discography in real time with you. I've heard RTB and Counterparts all the way through at least a few times. But not like I listened from '74 - '84. So, I look forward to experiencing "the ascent" with you and re-discovering some songs that I've really only heard in passing a couple of times (or I heard them live on the R30, Snakes and Arrows, or R40 tours live - because I did go to those concerts - mainly to hear them play their older hits). Anyway, all of that to say, "thanks" for doing this; and I look forward to hearing your take on these remaining six albums, spanning '1991 -2012, as I hear them again, in their entirety for (almost) the first time. PS, I'm with you. Not a fan really of the Steinberger or the Wal. Looking forward to a return to the meatier sound of the Fender (though the original Rick is my favorite bass tone of them all).

I took a hiatus after hearing RTB 1 time. Only heard the others later. Feedback, is a kick in the pants.
The Rikenbacher was the best sound bass Geddy or anyone rock artist played..the Fender really was much better than the others.

Roll The Bones was my second RUSH concert. Basically a record about luck of the draw...we're born and what happens...happens. Side note, Ghost of a Chance was the one and only time they ever purposefully tried to write a hit Top 40 song, according to Geddy. They failed but the song and album is great.

There are several songs from Presto that I like very much (and I love Available Light), but there's a feel to it that makes me overlook the album as a whole. Instead, I just listen to those songs I like. Roll the Bones is even more like that. The opening song (Dreamline) is nice but feels a bit weak. Oddly enough, they amped it up in concert and it's a phenomenal live song and one of my favorites. It's just the album version that feels like it needs more energy. "Roll the Bones" is pretty great, though the rap is having problems aging. "Bravado" has a nice feel to it. A couple other songs are OK, but some fall very flat for me, and some make me cringe (Neurotica, Bet Your Life). Even their instrumental "Where's my Thing?" is their weakest instrumental. This is definitely towards the bottom of my list of favorite Rush albums.

I appreciate your candor and honesty about your opinions of the Rush albums. They are a band who wrote and produced a good body of work. Even as a 47-plus year fan, I don't think every song is "great."
As far as other bands to delve into, I will suggest 2: Supertramp and the Moody Blues. The first band's period from 1974-80 ('Crime...' through their live album, 'Paris.')
The Moody Blues have a DEEP catalog. I would recommend beginning with the 1967 classic release, 'Days of Future Passed' through the last album, 1999's 'Strange Times' (14 albums) ✌💙

Show don't tell and Available Light are the 2 best songs on that record so I'm glad we see eye to eye on that. I sadly red a few negative comments on Available light but you know, Rush have a lot of 50+ year old fans who can't appreciate anything after Farewell to Kings (the old Rush crowd) and were more into the ''Zepplin'' phase. I for one don't like early early Rush as much. Of course I can appreciate songs like Necromancer, Anthem, 2112, Cygnus X-1 and the entire Hemisphere album but for me, Permanent waves is the ultimate album and when the true Rush was born, followed by Signals, Power Windows, Moving Picture, Grace under pressure, Vapour trails (Remastered version of course) Presto and then all the others have 50% good songs and 50% songs I don't often go back to. But these albums I just mentioned are 90% goodness!! You seem to lean that way as well so I'm anxious to see your reaction the rest of the discography. My guess is that you will love the sound more and more from Counterpart onward but maybe not the songwriting as much and especially Geddy's voice which you can ear getting worse and worse every record. The last album has an AMAZING sound but ... Yeah that's all I'm gonna say for now... 😝😝😝

    @bookhouseboy280 ปีที่แล้ว

Presto is a modest improvement after the clinical techno clutter of Hold Your Fire. The production lacks fullness and power but at least it has a considerably more open and spacious sound.
Excerpts from 2016 Louder interview with Geddy: "Overall, I thought Power Windows was a great accomplishment for us ... there’s a good balance between guitar songs like The Big Money and keyboard songs like Middletown Dreams ... But maybe not so much on the couple of albums after that - Hold Your Fire and Presto. On those records the keyboards were still present, but not in so positive a way. That was making the case, once again, for realigning the sound…"

The AIC comment is really illuminating, because you can tell from both of these albums that they were listening to a lot of Faith No More and what would sort of become called "alternative metal"/"hard alternative" bands, which really broke out with Soundgarden, AIC, and RATM. From here on out, Rush will be pretty influenced by those bands, and most if not all of those bands professed to be fans of Rush, even when it wasn't cool (and a big part of why Rush became cool about 15 years ago was that the fans when they really weren't cool started to take the pop culture reins).
Until about 2002, Neil would make a 45-minute-to-an-hour mixtape (then DAT, then CD-R...) for each tour of music he was listening to and liked which he felt needed to be exposed to a wider audience which would be played over the house speakers before the show started (famously on the Hemispheres tour, there was a lot of Police and Marley on it... the UK fans would basically boo all through the tape!) for a few tours after that, it then became an iPod playlist with much more classic rock than anything else.

Pretty much in agreement with everything here. Your "one foot in the 90s, one foot in the 80s) is dead on. Presto always felt like a restless point of transition to me. Also agree with the song picks (and there are no wrong answers when it come to preferences there). As much as I appreciate what Neil is addressing in the lyrics, "Chain Lightning" never resonated with me. The verse melody is an exemplar of what I don't like about later Rush material. And whenever I hear the chorus, I expect Rick Astley's voice to pop in for the kill. "Show Don't Tell" and "Available Light" more than make up for it, thankfully. And I love the way the album sounds overall. A giant leap forward.

Cool! To me, everything on Presto works well. Glad you're ok with the album. Now get ready for the rap thing on Roll the Bones, which I've heard that it completely turned off some Rush fans permanently. I didn't hate it that much, ha. Roll the Bones has some good stuff, maybe a little filler towards the end of the album IMO. I had tickets to see that tour in 1992 but it was cancelled due to Alex getting sick is what the radio said, but I heard later it was really Geddy. Still bummed out about it, lol.

After listening to Presto all the way through for the first time in years, I have to say I like it much more than I did. HYF did not change my mind. I enjoyed GUP quite a bit...always liked it but I tend to overlook it in favor of Signals and Power Windows. Also, it would be cool to see a dive into Genesis, especially since their work changed even more significantly than Rush's did in the synth phase.

  • @mattbaker5757
    @mattbaker5757 ปีที่แล้ว

LOL! You like the same songs off the album that I like, and like less, the songs off the album that I like less! A couple of things about Superconductor though, one I do like the song but to me it seems like it's the one foot left in the 80s and not the one foot moving into the 90s. So I kind of feel the opposite about that than you do, kind of strange but I don't know maybe it's been too long since I've listened to some '90s music. Except for Stone Temple Pilots. The other thing is that it's actually Alex lifeson who is singing the backup vocals. I've seen the video of it clearly showing him singing backup. Otherwise I would have had no idea either. I've also seen him singing back up in a couple other Rush songs in live concert videos but can't recall off the top of my head which ones.
One more thing. I would like to make a request that is non-Rush, I would do it through one of your payment donation sites, but unfortunately my business is landscaping and lawn maintenance and where I live we had a drought that nearly put me out of business pretty much half to Summer and now it's the offseason which is always slow, so I'm pretty broke and scrambling to make money myself right now. I hope you'll understand. I'll make a donation to you when business picks up again. Anyway the song is called The King will Come, the band is called Wishbone Ash, the album that it is on is called Argus. A review of the entire album would be cool, if you like The King Will Come. I must confess, however, that I have only listened to two songs off of that album myself. But, I think that it will be more enjoyable for me to see you react to the songs when I'm listening to them through your channel for the first time myself...It will be fun to see how close our reactions are, at least for me, since you can't see my reactions, obviously. In any case if you don't do reaction to it I totally understand you're trying to make a living just like I am.

Presto's almost a better "start it and let it play" experience than it is a song-by-song thing, which I imagine you picked up on playing it on that car trip. I agree overall with what you said, except that for me Chain Lightning works in that Red Lenses kind of "it's a little weird, but it's cool" way. Scars is probably my favorite of Neil's African percussion songs, and Available Light I've always thought was amazing. It's just so well crafted.
Roll the Bones is similar but there's more "Geddy funk", the production has more low end, and there's a very clear theme of chance/luck throughout the lyrics. Also the overall sound gets more 90s.

Sorry for a longer post. I can’t say I care much for Roll the Bones. But I will never forget the concert I saw them on for this tour. Me and the drummer for my bad at the time got to the line for tickets before sunrise and we managed to get front row stage left seats. So we were right in front of both Geddy, and Les Claypool! We came with our presto shirts, and over those we had Primus shirts that our friend had screen printed himself. When Les came out he looked right at us, pointed to us and did his signature smirky smile. At several points during their set, Les would play right to us. For instance he waited for us to yell, “what was it?” before the opening line of Harold of the Rocks. And then, of course Rush was Rush, which means they were incredible. It was a sixteen year old bassist’s dream! A night I will never forget.

I’ve always considered Presto a 90’s album. It was recorded towards the end of 89 but I find the music less like their 80’s sound. Roll the Bones is not too different from Presto. Both are very different and an improvement over HYF. Roll the Bones is a cool album. Some really great songs on it. Rush will continue to move away from keyboards. They are still there on occasion but certainly not in the foreground. Dreamline is the heavy hitter of the album. Usually Rush puts their most rocking song as the opening track. There are no stinkers on the album. One or two weaker tracks but nothing bad. That being said Bravado in my opinion is one of the very best Rush songs in their catalog.

Bittersweet moment for me personally. The end of the 80's. The first time I heard Rush, my best friend bought 2112 not long after it was released. I didnt quite know what to make of it...didnt hate it but didnt like it either. But I warmed up to it..started listening to their earlier stuff and soon I was all in. And I was all in right up to this album.
If I had to guess, I dont think the next albums will impress you all that much. It hurts me to say this, because I am as big a Rush fan as anyone here is, but there are a lot of very forgettable songs on the next few albums. IMHO, none of the songs are as good as the ones you like on Presto.

Hey no one gave you an album this time?😂. More than happy to comment on every video to support you and your channel. Got to help the algorithm right? I agree with you as which songs you really liked on this album. Although I think you liked a few songs that I don’t care for. Roll the bones is a very interesting album for sure. It is a step up from Presto IMO. There was one surprise “hit“ song That got a ton of AirPlay on the radio back in the day. Pretty sure you’ll probably do the pass video. It’s one of the.better ones for Rush. Even Geddy’s hair looks good😂

Hoping you get to see a video of Rush playing Scars live! Available light is my fave on the album. I think the song you thought was more of a grunge sound was actually “stick it out” off counterparts. Heresy almost is more in line with some of hold your fire. Heresy is not one of my tops from roll the bones, but it’s not a bad song. I think I know what you’ll think of it based on some of your other reactions. As far as your review on Presto, I agree with you on almost all of it (except I really like chain lightning). Can’t wait to see what you think of roll the bones.

You know, I really liked Presto when it was first released. Over time, however, many of the songs began to lose their luster. Now I can't get Available Light out of my head. I'm enjoying it more every day. I'll have to give the whole album a few more listens now.

I haven't. And frankly i'm afraid to lol. The few songs I've heard from them... idk it's just not my style of metal I think. Maybe I'm wrong maybe if I hear more, idk. I haven't done much Judas Priest but the few I've heard from them I reallly dig more. idk we'll see.

I wouldn't put you through it. There music never really changed through the years. I think may be Rush and Kiss were the ones who really changed. What ever you decide I'll be there for the ride.

Red Lenses is kind of the template for the Presto/Roll the Bones era: Geddy funking up the bass, Neil doing a jazz excursion on the acoustic and electronic drums, and Geddy experimenting with different singing styles. Neil and Geddy are still sort of doing all of that on Counterparts, but Alex comes back to the fore with a vengeance...
For Roll the Bones, I hope it's not too late, but try not to read previews mentioning experiments on this album, because there's one experiment in particular that the reaction will probably be best if you don't know it's coming (and is probably, all things considered, the most controversial experiment in the Rush catalog: the song was released as a single and at least a few radio stations did their own edits without the controversial part).

It’s a rainy and windy day here in MA. Presto will be going on the turntable today while I turn into a vegetable and do nothing today 😀
Your assessment is very fair of this album. Always enjoy your insights in your reactions.
You mentioned journey, I had no idea that they had a different lineup early on. Their first album is more like listening to a Santana album. Some amazing music on it. Of course Steve perry is who brough them into mainstream but it was a complete change in their sound. Not sure I could make it through their discography but good luck is you do!

Obviously loving this Rush deep dive, but I did one a few years ago at work of The Smiths, give them a go next. Not too many albums to get through and so interesting. Amazing guitars, lyrics and the bass work is definitely overlooked.
Keep up the good work man, I’ll be watching whatever your next discography listen is 🤘🏻

I haven't heard a ton of The Smiths maybe a few songs here and there and it's been awhile. I remember liking Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now

Are you calling your viewers cheap? Haha jk, I really love your summary of this album, as open minded as you are about it; I think it will continue to grow on you in the same way it did me. I was like you, my favorite was show don't tell and I liked a few others, then the ones I was not as crazy about began to creep up on me and I would find myself singing them or humming the melodies. Rush's whole catalog is that way, especially after the seventies and early eighties stuff.

This is a great journey for me. My brother left the Rush sphere after the Signals album so I sent him a link to Available Light. What a fantastic song. Presto is a very good album. Keep up with the honesty .... like most folks say , it is refreshing.
