  • John Dau recalls the night he was separated from his family in South Sudan at the age of 16 to find himself among the other “Lost Boys of Sudan.” His journey has been a long road of survival and perseverance. Making this journey has not been an easy one. He has some words of encouragement for some who find themselves on their own journey.
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. It was filmed and edited by Tijo Media at the Carpenter Theatre at Dominion Arts Center in Richmond, VA.
    #lostboysofsudan #sudan #community
Born in war-torn Sudan, John Dau is one of 27,000 “Lost Boys of Sudan,” driven from their villages when the northern Arab government attacked the ethnic minority population of South Sudan in 1987. In 2006, Dau was featured in the award-winning documentary, “God Grew Tired of Us,” and wrote a memoir of the same name, published by National Geographic in 2007. Dau is the President of both the Dau Foundation and the South Sudan Institute. The Dau Foundation works on providing nutrition and medical services at three different locations in Duk County, with a special focus on children under five and pregnant and lactating women. Dau is a born leader whose life is defined by his commitment to the future of his native country.

Yesterday I toured the South Sudan countryside and reality came knocking. Expansive land full of looted and abandoned houses, scrap metals of bombed cars, heavily armed security forces everywhere, machine guns… CIVIL WAR IS REAL and John Dau lived to tell of this horror stories.
He is my HERO because his narrative never ended there, he has immensely and relentlessly transformed lives of the South Sudanese by bringing healthcare to people who would have otherwise thought of a basic clinic/ healthcare as a “privilege” promised in the Bible when we Christians finally meet with our maker in heaven.
There is no adjective enough to describe who you are John. ONLY GOD WILL REWARD YOU FOR YOUR WORTH!!! And just as Martin Luther said, “The world begins to end when we stop caring about things that matter”.

I am positively amazed at the life story of this man. I watched the movie years ago and I’m now sharing his story with my grandson. We are very blessed to have been born in the US, even with all its problems. John could’ve easily forgotten about Sudan and lived his life here. But he didn’t do that, he is still working relentlessly to care for his people left behind in war torn South Sudan -may God continue to bless John and his ministries, and may the Lord help the people of South Sudan.

JOHN DAU you my hero.. regardless of all that you went through with your people, you still carried faith and enough determination to become great and not be held down by circumstances. that's amazing, i really admire that and your heart in doing whatever it takes to help those you left behind back home. you're a good man and the world would be a much better place if young men were more like you.. I actually think you should run for president of South sudan. you have true leadership in you., God bless you and God bless Sudan.

Amazing. God saved you for a reason. It was for you to tell the world the story of Africa. How we are killing ourselves. You have lived up to the expectation of God. May he continue to bless you. I wish I have half the courage that have to save my own country. You are truly a hero. You never forgot your people and your country. You have helped many. I thank God for you. I will support you however i can. You are an inspiration and a role model.

The story of struggle and success as a package is real not a fiction. Whatever John Dau has testified in this program is the real life scenarios that are still happening in the world. God will always bless those who acknowledge his support during tough times. God bless John Dau.

His advice to put the past behind and move forward, persevere and make something of yourself and then give back, is the best advice here can give. People who stand with their hands in their hips and demand generational welfare are doing themselves a grave disservice. John received a hand up and then he worked hard to become self reliant. That's the goal for everyone. More people need to embrace this ethic.

Ali Ahmad were the very guys who were hired by al Bashir to killed the innocent South Sudanese. For your information in South Sudan because our minds are being disturbed and destructed by war we can't even remember when we were born. Leave about him remembering the day when he first joined the first grade at age 17 years. Mr. John you are really a great man you made it to your great goals. You weren't the only South Sudanese refugee to be in United States, but most of your brothers who were with you didn't made it. Thanks your motivational video.
