There's one scene I remember from this game. It's in the first dungeon. There are two skeletons there talking about skeletons. They realize how impossible it's for skeletons to exist so they both fall apart after this realization. I don't know why, but I found that extremely funny and had to reload the game few times to see that scene again.

I believe a remake of DivDiv should be on Larian's table after Baldur's Gate 3 because this is such a fantastic game that was so ambitious for the time and even today it has some great things.

      Actually, no.
Theyd change it to what OS was and that would ruin the game, mainly bc of the change from real time to turn based combat.

I loved this dark and dirty world setting so much. Not a world where you wanted to live. Duke Janus was such an evil character, i don't think there are much more evil characters in games like him. It's also the most buyed game i have. First time i buyed the usual version. Second time i buyed the magazine version and then i buyed the double pack including Beyond Divinity. Then again i downloaded it from a sharing site, because i couldn't get the cd versions to run anymore and then it came out on GOG and of course there i buyed it again. :)

I think above all influences, even Diablo, Divine Divinity was most inspired by Ultima VII, which was the clearest and most direct inspiration for both its open world design and how interactable the environment is. It even uses similar controls for manipulating objects in the environment.

I'm a filthy casual who rarely plays these kind of games. However about 5 years ago I bought the gog version for less than a dollar I think and it got me hooked until I finished it. I didn't have to use hex editors and although I don't remember any game breaking bugs, I did use several save slots if something didn't triggered properly. 100% percent recommended 👍

This game has really introduced my to isometric view RPGs. In terms of roleplay and interaction with the world, I found it really revolutionary when I played it in 2004. I just couldn't comprehend how much did it offer to you when you really went out to explore, rather than telling you everything in the journal.
Loved the little quests such as the one in the starting location where you find two graves, one of which having words written on it 'NO FLOWERS, ESPECIALLY FROM MY WIFE'. When you move the flowers from the other grave onto the first one, a grumpy zombie crawls out of the grave to punish you for what you did :D. As a child I just couldn't comprehend the game would react in such a way to what I do in it. And there was so much more.
Divine Divinity was also kind of a personal asylum for me at that time. Moved with my family to a new place, did not know anyone there and found myself being bullied at the new school. Only had a pretty old crappy laptop to play on, because my PC was destroyed in transportation to the new house. DD could luckily run on it and damn.. it helped me so much to get through that difficult time. One of the games that will always have a place in my heart.
Now I'm a 30 year old dude with own family and still continue to find some asylum in Divine Divinity from time to time after a hard day at work. Thanks to Larian for the amazing adventure they have created.
Surprisingly, I have never ever experienced a single bug in this game having played it more than 5 times and on many different computers over the years. Maybe I'm just extremely lucky. Or the 7 gods love me back

I bought this game in steam when they finally put it up. They had a funny video/modern trailer that had a mock intervention type thing where the fans were addicted and were begging the devs not to put it on steam because they would relapse. They took it down because obviously its a little distasteful but at the same time it was really silly and light hearted. That video basically said it was skyrim before skyrim and i had played diablo 3 and elder scrolls series before so I bought right in and loved it. I would love to see another open world rpg like this with diablo style combat. I know we have sacred but that feels like a single player mmo where DD feels like a true sandbox due to the item placements, item movements, teleports, container UI etc. there’s nothing like DD and I absolutely love(d) it.

I played this back in the day in between Morrowind and Diablo 2. It feels like playing the later Ultima games if they were developed by Blizzard. From a design perspective, a lot of European games (Sacred, Sacred 2, Divine Divinity) around that time took A LOT of inspiration from the Ultima series.

I also played this in 2022. On the surface the game looks so dull with its bland brown/gray/dark green color scheme. Add in the fact that it is less than a dollar on sale, and imagine my shock at how robust it is! The story is well done and a lot of the dialogue is superb. I have to say I didn't do any of the fancy stuff you mentioned and played and beat the game just fine. I do recommend saving constantly as it did crash on rare occasion but I don't want anyone to shy away from this game because of it.

    • @NefariousKoel
      @NefariousKoel ปีที่แล้ว +1

Over the many years, I've finished two runs in DD. I only recall getting stuck in the area behind a wall once, and had to reload a previous save. Plus a random crash resulting in same. But for all the hours I put into it, I could finish it without hex editing. I do think it's more difficult to click on things when playing it on modern resolutions, items and monsters being smaller on the screen, compared to back in the day when I was probably running around 800x600.

I just started this game after seeing a number of your videos mentioning it, and wow, it really is a gem. Playing Diablo 1 again recently I was thinking that there was a really good dungeon crawl quality to it that seemed to be lost a bit in the sequels. I always wondered what a sequel to Diablo 1 would have been like if it expanded on the dungeon crawl elements more than the power fantasy, and well I no longer have to wonder cause Divine Divinity is that game! It's a must play for anyone who has fond memories of the first Diablo game.

It shows how far we have come in regards to graphics and sound systems in games and yet the power of a good story is ageless. A modern remake world be a nice gift from Larian but it's obvious they are very busy with BG3.

Game's sort like 2d Skyrim, just not generic and with actual personality. Game can be brutal at some points, especially starting out for some classes, but if someone can power through a rough start it's a long and very satisfying experience. The level design sometimes is lacking especially the sewers part and some dungeons are samey. It is a hidden gem/underrated classic aprg. It's sad it's not brought up as one of the best ones of its genre.

I remember getting retail release and trying version from some gaming mag, back then when they added full games to their issues. Both played once, then nasty DRM (StarForce?) spammed BSoD and did not let me continue. This is why I'm hostile towards DRMs like Denuvo - don't need it as a legit customers, it's just another nonsense which raises the chance to cause some potential problems... don't remember using hex editor to finish it.
Then got the game on GOG for peanuts, finished it the same month. Enjoyed it a lot more than Diablo2 borrowed from my old friend. Some difficulty spikes were pretty nasty though, like one boss (Josephine or what was her face) that almost caused me to drop the game. Clearing the ork's war camp didn't felt like a slog because combat was amazing.
There were some other games made like this but none of them were as good as DivDiv - Beyond Divinity was mediocre and Inquisitor was absurdly hard, obscure and not for everyone. Still finished as Priest with Bows. Some dungeons were brutal.

The way this game blends arpg gamestyle with crpg is really something I would love to see or the way this games handles inventory and crafting. I loved the crafting, it is so much more fun and immersive than just open a boring menü and click on the craft button.

I loved this game when it came out, the first 2/3 of the game great story and baldur's gate like, then the last 1/3 all hack and slash Diablo Style... Sadly I can't get it to run more then 5 minutes at a time due to crashing now days

Ive tried going back and replaying some of these, but my newer PC just doesnt seem to rrun some of them. Like KOTOR, I couldnt get a proper resolution. Inrefuse to fix them though.

I was never able to finish the game. Some kind of glitch. But it was fun. Maybe I will try playing it again sometime.

Definitely save often & backup those saves. I got through the first act only to lose multiple save files taking me back to the first dungeon. I wish this game would get some kind of sourceport like Diablo & warcraft.

Even when it came out it felt a bit janky (especially at the start of the game), but the immersiveness and personality of this game made me fall in love with it. The story almost became a parody of Diablo, and it was kind of funny at points. I'm not even sure if there were a lot if any Diablo like games at the time that boasted an imersive open world. The other that came later was Sacred, which added other polished features and rideable horses. The other Divinity games had issues, and the newer ones went for the Balder's Gate micromanagement mechanic, which did nothing for me.

It's like isometric Morrowind. Also Divinity 2 (not Original Sin, the other Divinity 2) is pretty good game, sadly overlooked.

This game is soooo slept on its rediculous. I love this game so much. I find it way better than any Diablo. I was so immersed. I’m playing divinity original sin now, but I’m thinking of playing it again after so I can play the story from original Timeline. One of my top favorites

I’m playing through this game for the first time I’m really hoping I don’t run into any game breaking bugs I’m 8 hours in and I’m having a really good time.

Any chance you might review more JRPGish games, like Chained Echos and Trails in the Sky? (both have great PC versions).

I liked the game but i did struggle with it back in the day. I remember the freeze spell which usually resulted in my warriors death most of the time. But i did play it like diablo so my build was really bad.

This Game is on my "have to play" list and installed, but i haven't got warm with it yet.
Also because everything is sooo small... I think i will try to upscale it with Lossless Scaling and a smaller Resolution.
I am sure i will have fun with it, when i am in the mood, i had much fun with Divinity 2 and its Humor/Story.
