      I'd have a rim brake version of the new bike. But if I had the 2013 model, I'd get some sweet carbon wheels (ali express obviously) and maybe get a 105 11 speed groupset.

    This has to be the one video where a sponsored (Cannondale) TH-camr is so honest about the need to buy a new bike! Here we have an eight year old bike with a first tier groupset and rim brakes, and he says exactly what all experienced cyclists know : It is just fine! It is more important to lose weight and improve fitness and technique than to have a new bike.

      So true! When I am on the indoor trainer, it’s all about getting better. When I go out riding, mostly I don’t care. Of course it also is, because I am not racing but I think that’s the point. Just go out and ride…

    • @mitchellsteindler

      Of course not. You’re absolutely right.

    • @RevoltingRudi
      @RevoltingRudi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mitchellsteindler it's not so much about hating people who want to have the latest bikes but about all the marketing bullshit that is thrown at people. Bullshit that no one needs or just isn't mature.
      I'm still not convinced of the "wide tires" trend, with even wider frames and questionable tube profiles. at least in the road bike area. (bla bla up to 35, 40, 50mm tire width possible) plus the tire pressures. drove the riders earlier ridiculously high pressures, it currently goes with tubeless in the exact other direction. with tubeless are now driven really low pressures and yes you can roll over everything but the rolling resistance will definitely be higher, and the handling crappier. especially in the curves. all under the killer argument "more comfort". a value that is very difficult to measure.
      Tires are tested on a steel drum and compared with each other. And the rolling resistance is measured in watts. Do we ride on a steel drum with diamond tread every day? Well, I don't.
      next are the tire profiles. there is almost no premium tire as full slick. boldly marketed were "all new" profiles with indentations where you need the most grip. and thus intentionally reduced the contact area. They also like to talk about water displacement. As if I ever drive +160km/h in the rain and have to worry about aquaplaning. How stupid are they?
      if the values of hambini are correct, you have to drive with a 28mm tire from aero standpoint with +80mm rim bed. Drives only in gusty crosswinds like crap. and at ~50mm you need 23mm.
      Di2/Etap just exorbitantly overpriced. +1000€ extra to control a servo reasonable. for the money you get a RC car x-racer r1 in full equipment and can race with it.
      would be interesting if an independent rider at constant 300W on the road testing a 2016 bike vs 2021. And no GCN is so fat sponsored, I can not take them seriously even if they make overall good videos.

    I have a very old Sensa Umbria aluminum frame with Tiagra 4500 groupset and 23mm tires that barely fit. I've ridden a lot with this bike up until last year when I bought a Focus Izalco Max 8,7 full carbon with 105 groupset. The difference is enormous. I don't want to ride the Sensa anymore. The focus just shifts sooo smooth, the ride quality on 28mm tires is very comfortable. I'm just cruising at a speed 1-1,5km an hour faster with the same effort.

  • @huntos83

    For me the biggest difference between old and new bikes is tyre clearance. On a lot of old bikes you can be limited to 23mm tyres which I feel in this day and age is not enough. Older bikes that will take a 25mm tyre or more are certainly a good option.
    I had a top spec 2015 Supersix Evo Hi-Mod Dura Ace Di2 and it was an amazing bike, with various upgrades I had it down to 5.9kg in a size 58cm. Running modern tubeless wheels and 25mm tyres gave great performance and decent comfort. Great bike to ride and always encouraged you to go hard and attack the hills

    This is the first time I saw your channel. I clicked on it quickly when I saw you were comparing a '13 Cannondale. I had a 2013 SuperSix with mechanical Ultegra (double chainring of course) and decided I wanted to upgrade to disc and electronic. I went with Red on my new bike. I sold the old Cannondale and kind of regretted selling it. My new bike is cool and I love it. Other than the disc brakes, I don't feel it was all that much of an upgrade. Unfortunately, the 2013 is dead. The guy I sold it too was ridding through town, wasn't paying attention and ran into a truck. The top tube was badly damaged in the crash. I guess I should have sold it to someone who I didn't know and wouldn't ever hear from again. That way I could just live in ignorance believing that the bike would live forever.

    I have a 2011 Specialized Roubaix that I got new at release with the bottom of the barrel Sram Apex 10 speed components. Over the years I added carbon bars, seat posts, and wheels, but this past year I tracked down the higher end parts from that time period (That are now much cheaper since 10 speed is two generations back at this point) and I just capped off a full rebuild with a Sram Red mechanical groupset and it was like a brand new bike that felt amazing. I couldn't believe how much better it felt and performed. There's no way I could afford a new bike with even Rival groupset pricing, so I'm happy to have some top tier components even if they are old :D

    Dude, nice video. I'm still riding a 14 year old Orbea Onix and, after more miles than I can count the thing still rides great. While I think there's merit in comparing pieces and parts I think that it really comes down to how a bike, starting with the frame, fits on the rider's body. While I love Cannondale bikes, too, bikes today are so freaking good that I think it comes down to fit and what the rider wants. Beautiful bikes, too.

    CAAD10/CAAD12 are incredible values if you want to get into cycling. You can find CAAD10s used for less than $1000, I've got mine with a powermeter+carbon wheels all in for less than $2k. That won't even get you an entry level carbon bike from Specialized.

    I tested a cannondale like this one, just older 2008. I just fell in love with it the seconds after riding it. I have a scott addict 2018 rim brake with a little over 8 kg. The cannondale supersix was lighter and it was such a nice experience. I'm looking to buy a cannondale supersix eve 2013 after testing this bike. It is much more faster than my. First nice comparison of clincher vs disc on performance. My theory is the rear seat stay/chain stay is wider on a disc setup (to accommodate the disc rotor etc) than an old school clincher setup where the chain stay width is narrower, its like walking up a hill with a wider stance, than walking with both feet normal stance

    • @jasperverkuijl
      @jasperverkuijl  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mmm, I think that’s not really the case because the actual with of the hubs and dropouts is similar on disc and rim brake.
      The spoke flanges of rim brake wheels can actually be wider because there is no disc in the way of the spokes.

    The only problem is people sell used things too expensive -- they can't fathom the idea that a bicycle that has been used and is 2 years old should be greatly reduced. As an avid e-bay-er, manufacturers release old frames they have to store for warranty purposes (when the warranty period expires)....these are better deals. I’m still riding my 2009 Super six hi mod. She can still bring it on most rides out there. She holds her own even against the more aero bikes of today.
      I think I could makeup “some” of the aero disadvantage by using more aero wheels. Perhaps some “new style” zipp 404s with 25mm tires. That setup would be a lot less $$ than spending $12 grand on the latest and greatest. Assuming I could even find a bike to purchase in today’s market! I see no availability with BMC nor Orbea.

    2013 CSS all the way. They could not make it anymore beautiful or lightweight, so they made it shit-ugly and heavy claiming "if it's ugly, it's aero and fast, and aero must be heavy and expensive". Since about three years the whole industry seems to live by that motto.

    I just built up a 1989 Cannondale 3.0 Criterium frame set…. The identical to my first road bike, apart from the color….it seems the reason my first 3.0 was so fast, was that I was all of 18 years old…..🤷🏻‍♂️….but I still love the 3.0 series and what USA produced Cannondales represent….
    Aerodynamics matters….but I don’t want a high strung bike that needs special attention multiple times a season….
    But I do want to be as fast as I can be even at 47, soon to be 48 years of age….apparently it’s going to cost $12,000😂😂😂….and feeling like a bit of a sellout
