  • French President french president Emmanuel Macron said he wouldn't rule out sending French troops to Ukraine and that other NATO countries had discussed the possiblity of sending non combat troops to support Ukraine in country. What does that mean? What was Russian President Vladamir Putin's response?

    It is not about testing Russias response, it was about testing the response of the french electorate and their European allies.

    • @OnlineSafety-ng7et
      @OnlineSafety-ng7et 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Your point is highly improbable because:
      1: Macron had no need to test the European allies because that test has already been carried out by the secretary general of NATO about 10 months ago (apologies, my photographic memory flutters on and off...more off than on but you can google it if you missed that event);
      2: the French electorate's reaction is one of the most predictable in the world and has been since the last head tumbled in the wicker basket so we are talking about a very long time.
      So Macron (or whoever) already had high expected values for both 1 and 2 but no expected value for Putin.

    Normally, the US has 'played' the role of the 'psychotic mad dog' of NATO but has 'inadvertently' relinquished that role. As a consequence, and with NATO member agreement, Mr. Macron has belatedly assumed that role to incite a reaction and to inject chaos since sometimes it only requires an eyelid flicker of the enemy to gain enough intelligence to work out the next optimum move.

    Military History Visualized has a video on the full leak (he's native German). The upshot was:
    Britain and France are effectively out of Stormshadow and the French version.
    The Ukrainian planes were all modified by British personnel (that's the boots on the ground) to fire the missiles and "There were a lot of American accents". This isn't news, we knew that was the case.
    The Ukrainian airforce is down to a single digit number of air frames anyway, but the F16s aren't wired to fire the Taurus either so they'd need to be modified by German engineers too.
    The total number Germany could send would be no more than 100.
    There was an accusation made by a civilian woman that the Taurus didn't work, this ruffled some feathers, apparently it works as advertized.
    But the advice from the Luftwaffe was it's not worth it.

    In France this "off the cuff" comment has been extremely unpopular, as it would be in any NATO country. Support for direct conflict with Russia is in the teens across NATO countries. His actual comment was at best ambiguous, because the term he used is only associated with combat troops. He did not say support troops or anything else which means he meant actual combat troops. The word crazy in a real literal sense has been universally brought up. Later on, he doubled down and said he carefully weighed his words and explained that in past we said no to missiles and tanks and fight jets, but they all ended up happening. This was also in context to the announcements of some of the German generals who said this war is turning into a West vs Rest of the planet kind of situation.

    There's A great deal of ignorance (and Ruzzian cope bots) in the comments. Non-combat troops are people who's primary job FOR the military is not direct combat. Cooks, truck mechanics, guys who fix broken guns, people who refuel aircraft, radar operators, communication decrypting. This is contrasted with combat MOS's (military occupational specialties, IE: jobs) like infantry, artillery, pilots of combat aircraft like Apache helicopters, Hornets, and drones, tank and infantry fighting vehicle crews. When I was in the US Marines, every marine is a rifleman first and was trained with a minimum of combat training and weapon familiarity. Every non infantry MOS was sent to Marine Combat Training for 3 weeks, which is a crunched down version of the 8 week course actual infantry went to, after boot camp (basic training) which is uniform for ALL marines. USMC fighting doctrine has focused heavily on attacking logistics of enemy forces, and train all marines so that they aren't utterly helpless if the same strategy is used against them. Not everyone in a combat zone IS trained as auxiliary combatants. Think psyops, clergy, translators, surgeons, etc. Many of these roles within the Navy or Air Force will have literally a handful of hours of familiarity with a sidearm or rifle AT MOST, if at all.
    Troops, or service members, aren't necessarily combat capable, but support the overall war effort. Not everyone in the US military is a "soldier", troops serving in the US Army are called soldiers. Troops in the US Marine Corps are called marines. Air Force are airmen, and Navy are sailors. Not every airman have anything to do whatsoever with aircraft, my father was intel communications, my mom was personnel administration, my sister was cryptography, her husband was a satellite image analyst. Not every soldier is infantry, I almost joined the Army as a heavy equipment mechanic, but joined the Marines as a truck mechanic instead. Motor Transport maintenance is the SOLE MOS in the Marines that will NEVER have to get on a ship and deploy amphibiously into combat, which is what the word "marine" means in English with regard to warfighters. Not every sailor will have a job on a waterborne vessel. Any C130 crewmembers or maintainers from the USN will likely never be on a ship, as the SINGLE c130 capable of carrier activity is the USMC's Fat Albert, which is a Blue Angels demonstrator, and I believe is retired, but I'm not certain of that.
    The first US servicemen captured by Iraqi forces in desert storm were 2 marine motor t mechanics who got lost trying to go fix a humvee, iirc.
    So yes, noncombatants do go to warzones, and their becoming casualties is a known forgone conclusion, but they typically don't present an actual threat themselves. An expert on training for urban combat isn't a threat by himself, but he's an indirect threat because the training he provides to the actual warfighters, same with medics. Their removal is strategic, not tactical, and that's why killing them intentionally with direct gunfire intentionally targeting them when they don't pose an active and immediate threat is illegal. If you're lobbing artillery or dropping bombs, that's one thing, because they are collateral damage. But if you invade a position, and an unarmed person in uniform is not resisting or fleeing, killing them is unnecessary and is flat out murder, and thus a warcrime. If you're in a firefight for 3 days, and your enemy runs out of ammo, and surrenders, and you shoot them in retribution because they shot and killed your favorite mate when they still had ammo, you're a murderer, and any nation of morals will prosecute and punish you for it.

    I am from Europe, Croatia (ex-Yugoslavia).
    Here is my take on this: I believe Polish Intelligence is 100% right, Putin will not stop the war until he reaches the territory he thinks Russia "needs to have" to secure its western flank.
    In short, that is the space from northern Carpathian Mountains up to the Baltic Sea. For many reasons that I won`t get into now, he thinks the current land border of Russia (border with Ukraine) is militarily undefendable for long term. If you see the history, you kind of get the idea, with Nazis almost surrounding Moscow, which was de facto saved only by bad winter weather and streched German logistics, to the Napoleon being able to even conquer Moscow for some time (Russians later managed to get it back while fighting from the surrounding forests).
    So this is the real deal here, it is actually not about Ukraine at all. They are just "in the way", and that is what even Alexandr Dugin publicly said.
    And he is the kind of person who openly says things that Putin just can`t.
    And here is the problem: If Russia manages to conquer all of that territory by force, what makes anyone think they are going to stop there?
    Let us remember how the Cold War started, Russian army refused to go back to its borders after reaching Berlin and had plans to reach Portugal in 14 days(!!).
    Hitler and Nazis also did not stop until the were defeated at the Battlefield.
    So, this is what is happening in Europe now. As lot of people have put it bluntly: it is 1930`s moment again.
    Of course Europe can`t just wait and do nothing. All options must again be on the table, same as they were in the cold war, including full nuclear deterrence of Russia.

    So a few thoughts. I think NATO leaders need to come up with a clearly defined, unanimous definition for “victory” in Ukraine. What are they trying to achieve? It’s just a rhetorical question… I honestly don’t know if all members know what victory looks like. Given how long the war dragged on, apathy seems to have started to set in… next will come a desire to stop providing aid (that’s already happening in the U.S.). As for what happens if Ukraine falls and Russia borders with Europe… hasn’t that already happened with the latest countries to join NATO? Does that change the perceived threat from Russia? I’m not trying to be sarcastic… I honestly don’t know the answer. My gut says, the threat is the same as it is today, but I’m just a dude on the internet… not some war strategy guru. :) Bottom line, I hope the war ends sooner rather than later and the end result is one Ukrainians are happy with.

      3. Cause unrest in Russia and the collapse of the Putin regime - there was a Wagner rebellion, but it failed and Putin is still popular in Russia. They tried.

Fighting dirt monkeys is way different than near peer combatants with more recent experience but hey c'mon, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Technologies, Boeing, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics would love your sacrifice to raise their share price.

    • @Patson20

      @mattfransen1551 the war ends two months later with putin deposed and all of western Russia being controlled by NATO forces. Russia lost 75% of their veterans troops in two months against an army weaker than the California national guard. Since then they've failed to conquer an area smaller than Texas in two years at the cost of over half their vehicles and a large chunk of their already meager air assets. We completely conquered a top 10 sized military that was fielding the same equipment the Russian army is today in the span of two months 23 years ago. So we'd do the same again.

      I would say us in Finland have been doing our own defence pretty well, considering our size. Also comparing the military difference of us and Russia now and during winter and continuation wars, I'd say we have done our due dilligence. Of course with Putin's rule, no one is really safe, as rationality nor morals are not the driving force in their politics anymore.
      I'd say we will have to ramp up our military production throughout Europe because of this, but I still feel it's rather unfair to state that Europe has not provided for our defence in general before.

      What would you be willing to lose after that? And after that? And after that? War is coming. You can stop it here, while it's small, or you can wait until russia takes more and more territory, becoming more and more powerful and fight a MUCH bigger, more devastating war later. As the saying goes, those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it. This is world war 2 starting all over again right before your eyes.
      Pootin took Crimea and we did nothing. So now he's coming for the next bite of territory. Same way hitler started taking a territory here, a territory there until the german war machine was very nearly an unstoppable force. Now all these countries have nukes. But. Do you just let countries with nukes do whatever the hell they want? Will you give up your home to appease them? Sure you can get another home but you can't get another life, right? But what about when the come for your next home? Or the next?
