Yes, Word is good for set it and forget it template when you make your own. However, I have always struggled with a print versus eBook version and sometimes made same edits on two different versions which is an annoying waste of time. With Atticus just throw up your headers on each chapter in word, type away and that is it. No formatting at all. Dump it in Atticus and it is done. Then download print version and eBook version from the same file. And, sorry to haters, I am still a Word writer.
I had a look at the template. It's a super fantastic tool, particularly for those (many of us!) using Word to write our books. It's like a pre-step to Atticus that's fantastic, but it's a very useful step. Thank you, Dave, for thinking of us! Please give a big hug to your team from me for this! 🙂
Hello Dave, I am a new writer and self-publisher. I am so grateful for all you have been providing us. I am currently doing a poetry/activity book for teens and young adults. I am doing this in Microsoft Word and hope to get Atticus as soon as possible. In the meantime, this template will be most helpful. I am truly grateful and will share this video with colleagues and friends. Thanks again. God bless you!
Good Day. Great video and thank you for the resource. My question is, if you use WORD clones like TextMaker, FreeOffice or even Google Docs, will I still be able ro copy and paste seamlessly into your templates? Thanks on advance.
Thank you so much for the free templates. I find it so useful since I am trying to complete my novel. I have been watching your videos on Atticus and will get the software. This is so wonderful! Between your software and ChatGPT, the sky is the limit in my writng.
Atticus is a game changer! Please invest in this if you can! (I am a customer, not affiliated in any way.) Having said that, bravo for introducing a freebie for people who maybe aren't quite ready for Atticus. Thanks Dave!
I worked out what the problem was with not being able to update the table of contents in my free non-fiction Word book template. My chapter number and chapter title text was not formatted at Heading one and two for some reason. Maybe it dropped out during the upload, I don't know, computers are mysterious for me at the best of times. My solution was to reformat the headings, delete the table of contents that came with the template, go to Reference>table of contents, and select one of the options. Once that was loaded onto the document I could update the TOC any time in reference.update table. That makes me happy because it's a great template and with body text in Libre Baskerville I think it looks brilliant. I've learned a great deal from Dave, smart guy, and generous too.
Thank you so much for this template!!!! I love it, so easy! One problem that I ran into was on pages 179 -185 there is a line above the number. I tried to delete it but couldn't. Can you please tell me how to get rid of the line? Thank you so much!!!
I'm using atticus and its so easy to format a book for kdp. I had absolutely no experience of formatting a book and it went pretty smoothly You can export in epub for an ebook. And pdf for print its great!!
Dave does your free template work with pages, or if I change my pages document into a .docx file? And do you know about the Atticus software you mentioned? Do you have a link for it? Thanks very much, it's a great thing you've created for free for authors!
It is good for those that can not be bothered to format a book themselves. I loved that side of one of the courses I took, it is 2nd nature to some of us that go on autopilot when formatting a document, whether that is for print of a book or a business document that looks professional.
I've been always using Word for my books and I appreciate the chance you offer to make things easier. In the two formats I received the "contents" page has no right margin, though. Just to let you know, if it may help (but maybe the problem is on my side, not yours!).
Can somebody PLEASE help me. I downloaded the formatting tool and LOVE IT. I started inputting my content for my book… but how do I add more already formatted chapters? I believe there are only 3 or 4 included. How do I add more chapters? Somebody PLEASE HELP!! 😢
No, Atticus doesn't have an affiliate at this time, but I believe there will be one early next year. It's more about all the new features that are coming out and wanting to get to a certain point before opening that up.
I've been playing with the free template for non-fiction. I use Word 2021. It looks very stylish, but there have been a few issues. I cut and pasted the chapter headings, using page breaks, but there is less space between the chapter heading and the header in the pasted in pages than there is in the first three chapters that came with the template, even though the paragraph info contains the same field data, i.e., 24 points before and 3 points after. The headers are the same size, so it puzzles me. The other thing is that I cannot update the table of contents, despite now having 22 chapters with some text in them. When I right click on the TOC, it sometimes asks me if I want to update the page numbers or the entire table and sometimes it just changes the existing date without updating. But either way, it does not update to include the new chapters. I've checked them and they seem to have carried over the Chapter number style (subtitle) and chapter title style (Chapter) but the Word TOC generator does not 'read' them. I have right-clicked and gone in through the toolbar with the same result. I've thought about using Atticus but have heard that this may not be suitable for a 400-page non-fiction work with about 200 small photos embedded in the text. I've formatted the file size on the photos to be less than 0.5 mb each, 300 DPI. I had a reply from Aticus that suggests this product may not work for my project. God help me if I need to use Indesign or pay someone else to do it! Kindle says they need the file size to be less that 650mb and with the reduced file size I think I can meet that requirement.
I just uploaded a book to KDP using Kindle Create. There were 21 paragraphs that were misaligned with one word taken out of the paragraph and placed on a line of its own! I've tried to fix the problems, but then other indentation issues arise. I want my book to look professional but am tired of fighting with the formatting program. I'm afraid to do more tweaking in Kindle because another issue happens every time I upload. I can afford Atticus, so would that be a better way to go (give me more options), or should I use the free tool?
Yes, a program like Atticus takes care of those things automatically. Otherwise you could hire a formatter but usually they will be able as expensive or more than Atticus and you’ll need to pay them for each book or any time you need to make a change to an existing book.
I followed the instructions and 'copied and pasted' my title, subtitle, author name, and the first chapter into the template. The pasted text brought its formatting along and overrode the formatting in the template. Is there some smart way to copy and paste, leaving the formatting behind? Or asking Word to apply the formatting of the template to an existing Word document? Otherwise, I'm stumped.
Hello I was wondering do you know anything about using canva for ebooks to list on Amazon some videos I've watched say save the ebook as a pdf but I heard it has to be saved as other files it's a weird word I can't remember I'm new at all of this and I have a canva account and I really want to do this can you help me out?
I use Canva regularly and am unaware of it being utilized to create an ePub which is what you need for an eBook (generally, ther is doc.x, etc.). PDF is for print. Canva is a useful tool for eBook covers but I could not imagine formatting a whole book through their tools, there are better free options out there for that.
@@paulcarro371 do you have any in mind and thankyou for replying back I'm very new at all of this and trying to find out as much helpful information as possible.
That, and with it being $103 cheaper, and has the same capabilities....I think it will give competition even to Mac users as well. As for NINC, OH YEAH. Can't wait :)

I want just normal biography book (some politics in it)
I can't make templates work. I've been banging my head trying to create a pdf copy of a word document I want to upload to Kdp print. I'm ready to give up and just pay the money and outsource it.
Use the money for Atticus. Drop your word file in and literally 99% of the formatting is already finished. Many templates are tricky because they use styles that one must realize have been added to the upper screen on Word, and many are simply outdated. They are difficult, it is not you. Having said that, this one looks better than any free ones I have seen. Still, if you plan to pay do not pay more than the cost of Atticus. Buy that instead. Good luck!
Atticus is awesome. Easy to learn and when you email support they reply almost immediately.
Awesome and super glad you enjoy it!

Or is it good for BOTH?

does it have to be used with word or can something like Libre office be used?

I just had another question. On your free formatting tool, what 'trim size' would you recommend for:
EBOOK?
PRINT book
Please tell us the size for E-book?
Thank you so much. How about a format for a ebook?
Are you KIDDING ME! Awesome ❤🎉! Thank you
This seems an awsome thing. I will try it for my next book and give you a personal feedback
Does Atticus work with google docs? I have a Chromebook and the word programme is limited by it.. If Atticus is happy with Google docs, it's for me.
The best way is to export your Google doc as a word doc, and then just drag and drop the file into Atticus and you should be good to go.
This looks great. Thank you Dave.
Glad to have helped :)
Thanks Dave, this is a great help and brilliant idea!
Glad it was helpful!
Can this articus be used for a hard copy format? I am asking because I want both ebook and physical copies made.
It most definitely can.
