Every time you go to publish a physical book you will need to have a unique ISBN for it.
So, in this video we are going to cover what an ISBN is, why you need one, and how to buy an ISBN of a book. I am also going to show you a free service that you can use to create your very own unique ISBN barcode.

Thanks for this informative video. I did use Amazon's free ISBN and was disappointed to find out that the "look inside" feature is not available in this case, which can be an issue. Something to keep in mind.
So if i use the ISBN amazon gives me, for my paperback, consumers wont be able to use the 'look inside' feature?

You don't ISBN if you just want to publish your ebook on Amazon. You can publish wide using Free ISBN provided by the self-publishing platform. It is recommended to have your own ISBN for ebook if you are publishing wide, as ISBN will connect ebook available on different marketplaces together. Also, search engine recognizes ebook by its ISBN too.
Hey I'm debating buying my ISBN and just printing my book myself, and selling it on my Amazon account. I wouldn't be using Amazon's kdp stuff though. I created an LLC that I can use as my publisher as well. I sell used books on amazon, and sometimes when the lowest price is less than what I'm selling mine, Amazon will de-activate my listing until I reduce my price to their lowest. It's unnerving that they do that. They always seem to favor the buyer with all decisions. I'm worried that might happen. Any suggestions anyone?

Since I published my first novels through KDP and took advantage of their included ISBN but NOW I wish to expand to other places like Barnes and Noble and others... HOW do I make that happen after purchasing new ISBN's? Will I need to remove my books from KDP and re-load them with the new number or have I blown my chance altogether? I have just checked on my own print book and once an free isbn is assigned and I cannot change to my own ISBN, So I think that would mean you would have to unpblish and uploaded a new book, exactly the same with your own isbn and publish that one. A pain. I would only consider this if perhaps I am going to recover, but even then a pain with reviews etc. Perhaps going forward with any paperbacks use your own isbns, woith ebooks it does not matter just publish them whereever as you do not have to use an isbn for ebooks, but you can if you want. IDEA bunlde print books togthere in sets as paperback collections and using your own isbn publish those. Not ideal but an option
When I learned the pros of owning my ISBNs, I invested in ISBNs, unpublished my books on Amazon, added my own ISBNs and republished them on Amazon can publish them wherever else I want them to be available.

You don't actually need an ISBN for physical books. You need it for brick and mortar and online bookstores.

Hi Kindlepreneur! I have been trying to list my board book on Amazon using my ISBN, and they keep rejecting it saying that I need a SKU or UPC and that I need to send them a FS1 certificate. I keep telling them that an ISBN is all that is needed, but they won't listen. Am I right? What can I do to get them to list my book using the ISBN?

Yes, you need to have a separate ISBN code for every version of your publication: kindle, audiobook, printable, large-text version, etc.

So, i understand that you need a separate ISBN number for hardbound, paperback, one for audio and one for e-reading. But what I am wondering is if you need a separate one if you are going to be doing a special edition of your book and you want it to be customized and leather/antique bound. Thoughts?

you mention digit 4 the single digit for region being 1-5, mine is 8, I wonder what that means?
You don't need to worry about ISBN region as it is an international unique number for a book.
Dave, do you recommend putting the book price in the barcode?
From what I have found online, most recommendations is no, nuless the book is going to be on a bookstore shelf. Who else would see it other than a person browsing pre purchase?
If you are self-publishing, then no.

For journals, magazines, and newspapers check for ISSN.

You need an ISBN for new stories plus even if it's the same story but paperback, hard cover, and ebooks need different ISBNs.
If I go for a free isbn with kdp and then later decide to publish with other outlets, can just I buy a new isbn for those editions, even though the book and cover are unchanged? And then the same book is on sale through different outlets at the same time with different isbns.
First do you mean a second edition? that being a new version with reasonable changes? if yes then a new ISBN is required for each Version. If you mean same book different publisher the you are making it harder for yourself and potentially confusing for the reader. Same title different ISBNs whats that mean, which one shoud I buy. Exaggertaed but you see what I mean hopefully. The simplest and safest way is to buy a block for ISBNs and always use one for each book UNLESS you are certainly going to only use one platform.
