This Is a Masterpiece in production and postproduction terms, what mics are on the amp? Did somebody mic the Piano? What about the zoom recorders?.... What do you have on that Rag, looks like a la 610... Bill FRISELL touch is beautiful, but c'mon he Is not alone.
Bill and I were fellow paperboys at Station 13 for The Denver Post in the mid-to-late 60's. I had no idea that he was such a guitar icon. He had not crossed my mind for the last five decades until this video popped-up. As kids, he was one of the "Big/older Kids" (as I was a few years younger) who was always quiet, kind and helpful; a true role model, while most of the other "Big/older Kids" were not so pleasant. It was great to run across this video and the memory.
@@guitarfestival Those were some great times! As I recall, our paper station was at 6th and Clayton or so and Bill lived over on 7th and St. Paul or thereabouts, while we were at 7th and Detroit. Once, at age eleven, I impressed all of the older kids when I took a wire from a bundle of newspapers, threw it straight up and it hit some power lines, thus shorting-out lights in the neighborhood. In those days, malfeasant behavior got one a star on their resume... Bill, "The Nice Kid" showed me how to load, and then helped me load my bike when I first started the job as an eleven year old. We had a wild crew there. I remember a bunch of the older guys went to the Cherry Creek Woolworths and stole a bunch of 45 records and then played them at the Station. Some of the locals that Bill might recall were the Irelands, Shields, Wilburs, Reeds, Mr. Takarsky (our Manager), the Knudsons, the Lefrees, Coquillards, Ebys, Falkenbergs (Charlie was killed on 9-11 on the Pentagon plane), the Clarks, and too many others whose names escape me... wait, Lisa and Ted Fonck (spelling) who lived next to the Crosbys at 7th and Milwaukee...
I love those Monk tunes Bill is playing. Just saw his trio a couple days ago. It was great to finally hear him play live. I've waited for almost 40 years.

How can someone be unpretentious and awesome simultaneously? Bill's playing reminds me why I love music. He's perfectly suited for Monk on guitar. I wish he lived next door. He seems like he'd make a world-class best friend.
There is everybody. And there is Bill Frisell. He’s a category of his own. Thank you Mr. Frisell for enriching the world. Now: who are these guys who give this a thumbs down? Can not understand....
It's wild, Bill always has this wobbly unsteady vibe going when he plays electric, but he still pulls it off on acoustic with no effects at all. Just delightful.
I have no idea why, but every time I hear Bill play-I’m weeping, That beautiful lyricism and melody. He really couldn’t be anyone else and for that I’m eternally great full-Thanks Bill
I had not seen Bill Frisell play acoustic guitar. He is really incredible, he is a complete artist: guitarist, arranger, composer, great human being ... I really love him more every day.
Heaps of acoustic guitar on 'ghost town', 'Bill Frisell With Dave Holland and Elvin Jones' and 'gone, just like a train'....can highly recommend these albums 👍
Saw Bill last night in Portland. Among other more obvious things, he was outrageously funny. His amp broke and the flight was delayed so he didn't get his nap. Dropping f-bombs. Funniest stuff I've heard all year.
The thing that I think makes Bill Frisell so stylistically different from every other guitarist I've heard is how deliberate every note is. Sometimes, it can even sound a bit unfluid or stilted as a result, on occasion. But, it's 100% because he is selecting each and every note, and being incredibly intentional about what comes out of the guitar next. It's a totally different approach to playing than anyone else I listen to. He's got a ton of muscle memory, and I'm sure he can fly through scales, but he just doesn't. Every nuance of the thing, each voicing, is something that it sounds like he spent a month thinking about.
that's funny coz i get the opposite feeling, like he's making it up as he goes along. as the other commenter said, he's speaking, not reciting a speech. it's not written poetry. he's speaking, which inevitably includes artefacts of thoughts, spandrels, if you like, with that improvisational folky jazzy spirit, rather than the exactitude of classical pieces or the written word of poetry where every word is pained over. for me - the way it sounds for me - this is a little rawer than that, which may therefore sound unintentional at times, whereas the whole point of practicing a piece 1000 times is to create the illusion of effortlessness when it has been anything but. i can appreciate why we both have different feelings towards it though as when it comes to top performers it's difficult to tell what is practiced and what is not. i used to work in a comedy club and it was so interesting to see someone do a little ad lib that really cracks you up ...and then to hear it again the next night. at the time, it felt so natural you would have sworn they just thought it up on the spot. then you realise they're just really good at what they do, haha. you're in their palm, under their spell.
@@pajamasflannel I know what you mean. They are both totally in the music when they play. That's what makes them both great improvisers. You can hear that they have progressed beyond having to think too much about theory, and they can finally be free to have fun with melody and harmony. I think a comparison to Monk for any musician is maybe one of the biggest compliments!
Really well said! I’ve never been able to pin point what it is about his playing that’s enjoyable for me, you nailed it. His solo guitar skills are just out of this world. Every idea and phrase seem to effortlessly bleed into one another.
Yeah, I don't know how that guitar can sound so acoustically and transparent . It might be plugged into an acoustic amp but even then It doesn't add up.
I really like to se him play on his own. Not that I dislike the other stuff but these performances are very intimate. This is probably what it’s like when he’s just playing at home.
Watching bill inspires freedom in thinking and to me is an invaluable asset when it comes to approaching the guitar. It's like he unscrambles your mind a little bit more with every masterful phrase. Out of this world.
Bill is dreamy. I don't think there's anything better than a good electric guitar being played primarily acoustically, with just a hint of amplification. That perfect sweet spot, between both, is out of this world. Just ask T-Bone.
Pure beauty from beginning to end, and a heartfelt message in every musical note!!! Thanks!!! Belleza pura de principio a fin, y un sincero mensaje en todas las notas musicales!!! Gracias!!!
Wonderful stuff from Bill, as ever. To just sit and play unaccompanied for 40 minutes through that kind of material, blows my mind. Having the pair of mics pick up the 335 acoustically as well as the ones capturing the amp is kind of unusual, but it's quite cool. Certainly very live feeling hearing the pick attack like that. Nice post, thanks.

Just thinking while listening to bill play. I often feel personally like guitar is a lackluster instrument on gigs compared to the expression/dynamics you can get from a horn or a piano (probably just me being self-critical as a guitarist lol), but I get a warm feeling hearing bill play like this, the expression and dynamics aren't as wide as other instruments but regardless I feel like this is how the guitar is meant to be played. There's something warm and inviting about hearing a guitar being played solo, the attack you can get, the natural sustain of the guitar. It gave me hope, embracing all the idiosyncrasies of the guitar like Bill does so effortlessly just shows how guitar can stand out and have a distinct and impactful voice. What a great performance!
Thank you for this really thoughtful review/observation. This is genius at work. Sometimes less is more. An understated player who actually says something with his music.

Simultaneously jagged and gorgeous playing on the acoustic, in particular.
