I was out on the Downs Tuesday, going in the opposite direction! I was so sure I saw you! We were cycling push bikes leaning into the wind but heading towards eastbourne being pushed up the hills! We managed it over a 3 hard days. I do it every year! You should definitely return to do it winchester to eastbourne the views are amazing heading in that direction also!
My next step is to get an ebike with spare batteries! Questions:
      1. Can you make video showing all your kit.
      2. Do you think it’s possible to do it on 2x 700wh batteries in 1day with good weather.

A follow up video going over bikes, gear used, planning the route and transportation access to start and end point. With lessons learned what would you do/take again what would you change would be great!

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

And in addition, a question about battery chargers, since they were using 2 batteries. Did they carry 2 chargers or let the first battery charge to 100% (this can take up to 5-6 hours, enough time to kill many beers), then get the second one on charger while sleeping ;-) Or they had a crew with 5-6 spare batteries for each bike ;-)

Would like to know both perspectives on the bags on the front wheels instead of the rear, not sure I would have liked that weight in the front unless it was ballanced with bags on the back also.

Love the adventure content! Would be great to see more content on battery management, charging infrastructures for multi day adventures. I don't think its feasible for most people to carry 4 batteries for 2 days, so how about using pubs/cafes as charging stops?

  • @paulfarley7717
    @paulfarley7717 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Started e-bikepacking this year, it's the best thing I have done in years and it is a constant learning curve in terms of refining the set up. Luckily I already had a load of outdoor gear (dry bags, tent, stove etc) so could use some of that. I have done a few two day trips without having to recharge because I have 1,625w of batteries. Having to recharge is the biggest blocker to a multi day trip especially if you want to go to remote areas. Despite what a lot of people say keeping the weight down is still important as it will extend range.

  • @benmarwood416

You don't need an eBike for this. Two of us did Bournemouth to Eastbourne via Winchester in on regular MTBs. Also did Bristol to Ivinghoe Beacon via Avebury to connect the Ridgeway. I love my eBike for certain stuff but a waste of time for the big epic rides. I did x4 350mile loops last year on gravel bike with minimal camping gear - x3 stops per trip. It's a massive sense of achievement doing it with just your legs.
NOTE: Prevailing wind usually from West or South West along that coast so start at Winchester and go East!!
I think eBikes for pure fun around 50k and regular bikes for proper rides. On the plus side, I hope you inspire people to get out and ride on anything - well done for that chaps!

Would love to see more E-bikepacking trips and maybe a show on full-suspension bike - travel bags. See on your show you had both front, rear and handlebar bags. Love this type of e-biking and have done a couple 2 night trips around the Rincon Volcano in Costa Rica, since single track trails are few due to the extreme jungle and extreme rains. Rustic lodges a better option to tenting though, as too many snakes, puma and jaguar for that. Love your show and look forward to all the videos each week.

Great ride boys, credit to you both for doing it on e-bikes. It's a hell of a route. The max elivation is only 280m or so but you gain and loose it all at once over and over again! Very few opportunities to re-supply without deviating from the route and loosing precious elevation to.

Batteries cost more than the cheap Tents & Sbag Mat set up 🤷🏻‍♂️
Bike packing with 3/4 Spare batteries ain’t gonna happen for 99% of Riders 🚵🏻‍♂️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️

I was thinking this. The benefits of an ebike seem massively reduced if you’re only going 30 miles on a charge!

Great ride Chris! Can you give us an approximation of the total system weight (rider+bike+packs)?

I agree with some of the other comments, you haven't said what bikes can accept panniers and racks etc, what the kit is. Most can't, you have to use bikepacking gear with their awkward, small, difficult to pack seat packs etc.

Riding Haibike XDURO Adnevtr would've made more sense. Enjoyable video nonetheless.

Did you take 4 batteries each, or somehow charge them over night in the tents??

Great video, I think you did say you had the batteries on charge in the barn or something but how did you manage to charge 4 batteries? 👍

Hey EMBN! Love this channel. However, I would love if you guys could Adress some more time to safety and safety gear. MTB accidents are nothing to take lightly and there’s a big rise of critical accidents the last years. I think this has to do with more and more people getting into e-trail biking and chairlift bike park especially.
Best regards from someone who work in the air ambulance 🚁

Guys, did your ebikes have rack mounts? I just don’t have them on mine, and I don’t know if it’s possible to install a trunk somehow. Maybe these are special racks that are attached in a different way?
