Yes, a civilized country would have safe, separated bicycle paths, but at least in America we have a "positive attitude" 😆

And all the road cyclists are all, "What? There was PLENTY of shoulder on that highway!" ;) :D Seriously, though, for a relatively newbie cyclist, that was no doubt a bit of an intimidating challenge. Well done!

That isn't a highway as human powered vehicles are not allowed on highways. That is a primary route

I've cycle toured for years, rode most of Vietnam, Hanoi to Ho Chi Min City (Saigon), Melbourne to Sydney. First half of the Great Ocean Road. Tasmania's East Coast (a couple of times) I've also commuted all my life and owned more bikes than cars. Used to be a 100km (60 miles) a day on pretty much any terrain, so long as it was a msde road. (Single track's "a bit" harder, hey.)
It makes my heart sing when others discover cycle touring. eBike or not, the open road on a bike is freaking golden. And that moment when camp is setup and your nomming dinner, watching the sun going down. Life can't get any better. ❤❤❤

I think the use of an e-bike is awesome! You can make it as hard or as easy as you want, and it opens up activities like bikepacking to people who would otherwise be physically unable to do it on their own.

    • @stevenbaker7025

Yeah small percentage of people who actually 'need' an ebike from a disability. Most people are just to lazy in getting out and riding before going fully loaded.

@@ivytyler I agree with Ivy's comment and here's my 2 cents worth. I'm functionally blind & ride a recumbent tadpole trike for safety. I do overnights & 4 to 5 day tours. I'm 74 years, not decrepit, but i ride the trike to get out & enjoy life. Don't ever, ever, judge a person for a trike or an electric assist (or wheelchair) until you know why. Go Miranda........

@@ianlindridge5378 So telling people who take a different and disagreeable view to you don't have a voice. This girl is quite clearly capable of riding a proper bicycle and not being lazy. Ebikes are motor bikes and traditional cycling has been infected by them, all these lazy feckers now claiming they are cyclists. No they are not, but they are cheats!

@@rei This veteran concurs, no more running for me. I love REI's bike shop mechanics, STL's location. After my career ending crush injury in the military I gained a substantial amount of weight after multiple surgeries and a sedentary lifestyle. I had to buy REI's Novaro brand men's 2XL bibs. The bike shop never lycra shamed me. Loyal REI Co Op member, I drove to the next REI location to buy my Cannondale Tango. The local LBS Cannondale dealer (preCovid) wouldn't offer me the same MSRP as REI for the same bike. Buying it from REI I could afford better components and hydro brakes.
I love REI's used site, the only way I can afford quality gear until REI has on site Garage Sales.
Short cyclist need a lower standover and I feel Cannondale gets the geometry right.
Prepandemic my salty sailor veteran friends and I were planning a bike packing trip. Since I am on the GI Bill, financially things are very tight. I also can't afford an automobile so my bike is my sole mode of transportation.
I love her content and the availability to purchase items she uses on REI'S used site.
For those of us who choose or can only afford a bike as transportation, this veteran salutes REI and Miranda for showing people how to have smiles for miles.
I would love to have an e assist bike. I used to subscribe to the ethos of manning up and dealing with pain. I always wear bibs, chamois cream and gloves. Comfort is imperative and REI's brand allows me to purchase quality gear.
Cannondale is you are out there, can Santa bring me an e assist bike? My quads have gone soft and I would love a little assist now and then....

Maybe you want to consider buying a trike bicycle, because trikes causes less stress on your knees, back, neck and wrist. Oh yeah, no more saddle pain. A trike can be fitted with an elektro motor as well.
You can bikepack with any trike. I went on 550 mile/ 900 km tour from the Netherlands to Hamburg and back. Sure, trikes are more expensive then bikes. So try to buy one second hand.

I use an ebike for transportation around Portland where I live and it’s such an awesome thing to have. I still have my regular touring bike but honestly I’m thinking of doing an ebike conversation on that as well. Cycling in general is just an amazing thing. The years I’ve spent commuting by bike and getting around by bike have been far more fun and far less stressful even in bad weather then I ever am commuting by car. For me an ebike is absolutely a utilitarian choice as it makes getting around faster and easier and I think that if physical fitness is the barrier to cycling for some folks they should really consider trying out an ebike it’s honestly a game changer.

Please make a mention that there is no safe way to cycle from Discovery Bay ~(24:27) to Four Corners ~(24:35)! This section is so dangerous that the ODT website specifically recommends bypassing this on a bus or via a very long 19 mile detour on state highways.
Since the video makes this section appear continuous, I'm afraid people may watch this video and attempt to ride through it thinking the trail is actually continuous.

      @degnaw 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@swerne01 The bus doesn't run at all on Sundays and only twice a day on Saturdays -- once at 7:35am and once at 5:20pm. And it only takes three or four bikes max, so you need to pray it's not full.
But that's besides the point -- even if it ran every 10 minutes, the video should still mention it so people know there's a bypass involved.

I absolutely ... LOVE this video! I think it is the BEST one I have seen from you to date! I MUST give this a try (except I think I will have to use a hammock instead of a tent). Thank you for the video and especially for showing the world how much FUN a person can have being in nature. As a 63 year old an Ebike means I WILL ride vs a standard bike (BTW - I commuted 10 miles a day for 25 years before retiring and getting an Ebike). Would LOVE to see more bike packing videos!!

Miranda, Please be super careful about riding on a highway. 18 wheelers can actually suck you into there wheels. I lost a cousin that way. The faster they go the larger the vacuum under the rear wheels of the cab. I am glad you made it safe. Keep up the most excellent videos and the positive attitude. You are very encouraging for newbies like me.

Love that Miranda advocated using similar equipment she already owns, rather than product promo-ing. REI is killing it with authentic promotional content that doesn't feel salesy. But, more detail on your food, please, Miranda! I want to know what she's eating at camp & in town. Cream o Wheat with strawberries, kiwi, & matcha? Tell us more!!! I feel like M might eat to live, rather than live to eat, but for the rest of us, bring on the details! Speaking of which, a show about a trip to the bulk bin store & prepping dry backpack food from those ingredients would be awesome! I bet $5-10 would cover most of her food for 2-3 days using bulk bin oats, nuts, fruits, veg, beans, etc...

Thanks for not only the entertainment but the information and your feedback, it's quite helpful to those of us who may be considering something similar. Kudo's to your crew too! Back in the last century---I did a 4 day, 3 night trip but we didn't call it bike packing. I had what was then Nishiki's top of the line touring bicycle back in "85." I had rear panyeairs and a handle bar bag. I was carrying a total of 52 pounds of gear, which included, my Cannon with two lens, and a flash unit. (there was about 5 or 6 pounds right there). I had a blow up tube tent which I really liked. It only took 3 to 5 minutes to blow up, would fit two people, and I didn't ever need any help to set up; or take down. Of course I had a sleeping bag, and the blow up matress that came with the tent had a leak in it. Food, a few extra bits of clothing, and a nice pair of shoes plus the cheap tennis shoes that used for my bicycling. (That proved to be a mistake.) I started the trip with these two other guys, I knew one of them, well we got seperated 60 miles into the trip. Which truned out the be the best thing that could have happened. The commdy here was, one of the two had his own stove, and convinced me to leave my brand new stove at home, which made sence save a few pounds the single burnner stove plus say a pint of White gas. But then we got seperated. So now I had now way to fix my meals. But that truned out to be a favor in disguise. My fist night at the Solono camp grounds 80--88 miles from my home in Orangevale, a part of Sacramento CA. Two woman at one of the camp sites fixed me chicken and stake that they had in extra. My second night out a woman invited me over to her place and again I had a place to fix my meals and shower. She insisted on washing my dirty clothing. My third night out, a woman invited me over to her place and again I had a shower, and a place to fix my meals. Her and her husband invited me to stay for the weekend and go sailing on the lake with them in their sailing boat. My last day, I had to get home for summer school starting two days posting. I road 126.4 miles to get home. When I was visiting the Falcon Crest house, where the weekly show was filmed, I had met two beautiful woman that had invited me to come stay at their place if I wanted to ride to Walnut Creek. In hind site I wished I had. I started the trip with $20.00 dollars and came back with $10.00. 4 days out, 288 miles. So that single burner stove that I bought back in 1985, to this day I have never used it. Not even put any gas in it as yet. The cheap shoes that I used, my last day with 126 miles well the ride left deep creases in the soles and ended up brusing the bottomes of my feet. Immediately I went out a bought a propper pair of bicycle touring shoes. Now 32 years later, I still want to try using that single burner stove. Would still love to go bike tourng some where for a multy day ride. But I would rather wait until spring. Ps, I now am riding a Trek 520 and bought a kick stand, letting the bike fall to the ground all the time is not good. I am totally against the use of E-Bikes. That is not bicycling. that is motor cycling. If I want to ride a motor cycle, all get onto my Honda 600 Shadow. Oh yes that is NOT Exercise to ride an E-bike.

....That was incredible..... I have been trying to develop bicycle safety skills for about forty five years.... I fell on my bicycle, when I was about ten years old....I had a bad brake on my left leg bone....I was in traction, and then in a huge cast for a long time....Body paddling, extra lights, and many great safety things should be added to any kind of bicycling (two wheel traveling), like motorcycling has many safety mechanisms.....If you didn't have to even peddle once, that would still be an outstanding adventure, and as good or even better then peddling.... Thanks for sharing, and if safety is increased, risk is decreased, and there is more time for enjoying and improving.....

Omg I love bikepacking and I love that it's being shown on the channel! ❤️❤️ it was so sweet because I know the elation she expressed at the beauty of the nature. I've felt the intense joy that comes from exploring outside while exercising. I also understand the roller coaster of emotions with also being outside your comfort zone physically and by situation (like having the trail unexpectedly closed and rerouting, or having to bike on a narrow shoulder). I'm glad no one filmed me in those moments 😅 but anyway, it's wonderful she is sharing that with so many people 💞

It'd be great to see you bikepacking a mountain bike trail. You'd have so much fun. I hope cycling grows on you. Remember that you can coast. In what other sports endeavor can you gain ground while doing nothing? And by the way, riding an e-bike isn't cheating. The idea is to have fun; you don't have to kill yourself.
