VW Jetta TDI High Pressure Fuel Pump Replacement (DIY) volkswagen jetta auto technician

  • The original diagnosis of this 2004 Volkswagen Jetta was that it was leaking oil from the high-pressure fuel pump. On this particular set up, engine oil lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump internals. The seals inside the high-pressure fuel pump were old, causing it to leak oil.
    I'd rate this job a 4 out of 10 (with 10 being the hardest). It's fairly easy to do.
    You'll have to remove the coolant housing to access the high-pressure fuel pump, so make sure you replace the coolant that is lost during removal. Also, be sure to bleed the air out of the coolant system after you pour more coolant in. Otherwise, the vehicle will start to overheat.
    And that's all there is to it folks. Thanks for watching this video, don't forget to hit that like button & subscribe for more auto repair content.

    I love how realistic this video is, people usually cut out the parts of them dropping stuff or struggling to reach the bolts etc but i could relate this so much lol. Great video, i may have to do the pump on my BRM TDI soon. It starts to have trouble starting unless i keep it over 3/4 tank full

      I try to keep it real as much as possible. Check the pick up tube in the fuel tank is reaching the bottom, and make sure it’s not damaged before you replace the high pressure fuel pump. Thanks for watching!

      Yeah double check your pickup tube, could also be the lift pump going out, but idk.

    Great video! I always like to watch someone else tackle a repair before I attempt it. Btw to get that one bolt behind the coolant neck, you can use a long ball end Allen key on a socket. Bought a 7 pack at home depot for $21 and it had the 5mm needed. Air box has to come out to do this tho.

    Im pretty sure my HPFP is leaking, too. I was excited when I found this video, but not anymore lol because my heat/heater core doesn't work (like that when I got the car) and don't you need that when you have to burp the system? When you took off that coolant tube/housing I got sad haha now I dunno what to do...

    Should have shown to purge the air out the tandem pump by pulling the return fuel hose out of the fuel filter and cycling the key like the manual states !

      @AlexTheCarDoctor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will keep that in mind thanks

    • @kevin.lefevre
      @kevin.lefevre 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you please explain on this more? So when you're all done installing the new tandem pump, and you hook up/plug everything back in, before you go to start the car, you should do what exactly? cycle the key to the ON position but not Starting it? why pull the return fuel hose from the fuel filter?

    • @Bakanelli
      @Bakanelli 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevin.lefevre well ELSA (vw offical manual) states that you should use should use some sort of vacuum mashine to extract the air out of fuel system (possibly the same mashine that is used for purging the cooling system).
      Well since you probably don’t have that, disconnect the return fuel hose (so that the fuel with air can more easily escape) and cycle the key for a few minutes without starting the engine (when you cycle the key the lift pump in the fuel tank works for a few seconds and pushes the fuel through the system). When you have done this enough time, connect the fuel hose back.
      Even when doing all of this you will still most likely need a help of starting fluid to to successfully start the car. Good luck!

    It's not actually an hpfp. Just so you know. That's on the common rail system. This is a pumpeduese which the injectors create high pressure from rotating against the camshaft.

    • @AlexTheCarDoctor
      @AlexTheCarDoctor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the knowledge! I never really looked into it before now. I truly thought it was a common rail like the ALH. The sad part is I own a Jetta just like this one lol you learn something new everyday !! I’ll make the correction and pin at the top of the comments!. Thanks 🙏🏽

    Great info, thank you, need to do this on my son's 03 Jetta. Found the same area wet as well. Also we have a wet EGR (or the area around it). Also, do recomend a dealer part or from another manufacturer to replace this? Any brand in particular you recomend? New to VW's (and diesel). Thanks in advance.

    • @AlexTheCarDoctor
      @AlexTheCarDoctor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      On the 2003 models you have the ALH type engine. Which is set up differently than the one in this video (BEW type). So, on yours It’s just a vacuum pump. Your high pressure fuel pump is located near the front of the engine. It’s driven by the timing belt. You may just need a gasket kit, this is the link www.amazon.com/RKX-Vacuum-Reseal-038145345-rebuild/dp/B01MTVJFXD
      But if you want to replace the whole vacuum pump, any brand should do. Dealer may not have it due to how old the vehicle is, but it wouldn’t hurt to check. You can get it at your local parts store or online. Just check the reviews before buying.
      On the wet EGR issue, it may be leaking or you may have a loose or dry rotted hose. I would recommend cleaning the area and inspecting it to see where the leak is coming from if you can.
      Hope this helps, & Thanks For Watching.
