It's quite sobering hearing these stories and have Seth admit being duped too. That's something quite rare for public figures to admit. Great talk Mr. Andrews!
Great lecture. This video should be required viewing for anyone signing up for social media accounts. This is certainly worth sharing with friends and family. It's embarrassing how easily we are deceived and emotionally engaged.
I was seriously concerned when you started with this story because I knew the background and have heard it misrepresented SO MANY TIMES... But of course, Seth, you pulled it out beautifully! Thank you for an excellent job and thank you for a great total presentation!
Another couple bad ones to avoid are "like" and "so", it is difficult to get over the habit of using these filler words when speaking, let alone when doing so to an audience.
It takes practice. When you feel an "um" coming, just pause instead. If Toastmasters is in your area, they might be able to help you develop those skills.
A good tip I got in speech class and then debate was any time you catch yourself going uhm and so is to just stop for two seconds take a breath and start again, and if you keep doing that eventually you'll notice more seamless transitions, better punctuated pauses and a more confident sounding delivery.
I worked in “documentary” production for many years, for many prestigious and respected television networks. I can share firsthand that truth was less important than drama and entertainment value to the decision makers. My objections at the time to our making of unethical content were met with threats to my job. I learned to shut my mouth until I changed careers. Also, TV production companies don’t have budgets for fact-checking, nor the time, nor the incentive.
Seth is so accessible. No word salad, no talking to prove how smart he is. Just clear and easy. I love Hitchens, Harris and Matt D, but Seth is more easy on the ears.
This was one of your BEST presentations, Seth. I have a distinct memory of me thinking that the McDonald's case was indeed a frivolous lawsuit. What a surprise to find out the information you've made available! Thanks again for all you do!
Wizards First Rule: People will believe a lie because they want it to be true, or because they're afraid it's true. That's why the more a story seems to agree with or validate my beliefs, the harder I look to find the lie.
Liked and shared. Thanks for this. My great grandmother believed all TV advertising. She would say "There was a young doctor on TV last night saying how good (a particular medicine) is. The actor wore a white coat and had a stethoscope therefore he was a doctor.
Seth, to me if there’s anyone living out there who’s best accommodated by the term „hero“, then it’s you. Your impact on worldwide societies is probably underestimated by far. You’re helping to let the fastest growing social division thrive more and more every day, when people watch your videos and take the courageous step towards reason. I am proud to tell you that yours as well as the productions of Christopher Hitchens made me an atheist - and I am very thankful. Greetings from Germany!
I was so honored to be able to attend this in person. Seth's ability to engage and convey his information is amazing. Love the channel, love the subject, and happy to be a supporter.
It was a amazing to see you here in Orlando. It was my first time. It was also my wife’s first time to atheist exposure and believe that you helped see things in a different perspective.
2018: "'may you live in interesting times'? I dunno about you, but I wish times were less interesting" 2020: "Did someone say you wanted to live in more interesting times?"
McDonald's could have stepped up...I think that's what I take away from that story. They could have helped out this poor woman who obviously wasn't aiming to give herself those horrific burns just to promote a lawsuit. If you think she was, you're too jaded to think clearly. $20k and the acceptance of their part in the mishap would have mitigated the lawsuit. But, short-sidedness and greed fueled their decision.
Man thank you once again. I had never heard this side of the story. Not that it was ever my business, but it bums me out knowing that the press often doesnt give us our info correctly.
What a great talk. I am a professional in social media, and it is hard to resist the easy like, RT or comment. We must balance the small amount of sensationalism necessary for engagement against the blatant click-bate and lies. So, I truly appreciated this talk. Well Said!
Thanks, Seth. That was a very useful perspective on how even a skeptic can be sucked into making and sharing illogical conclusions based on insufficient appropriate evidence. I have to admit that I fell for at least two of the examples you gave (crockodile eaten pastor; windfall from McDonalds for stupid coffee behavior.) We all need some sobering checks on our attempts to believe what is true rather than what is comfortable. We need help to remain skeptical of things that are socially acceptable in the world inhabited by the people we want to like us and or make us feel good about ourselves. Since you fall in the latter group :-) I thank you for letting me know that it is OK to be duped, so long as we don't dig in and refuse to investigate further when someone suggests that we haven't based our conclusions on all the relevant facts. And it's also OK to admit to being humanly fallible. I have one other comment to make, Seth. In the early days of your skeptical non-believer's broadcasts I was put off by your manner and found that I could only listen to a segment of any program. I am guessing that you must have taken note of comments from people like me because your style changed over the years and NOW I find it hard to STOP listening to you. My congratulations. Someone noticed!
Before any of you corporate white knights jump on the Lieback case, please consider the following facts brought to the jury during the trial: - By corporate specifications, McDonald's sells its coffee at 180 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit; - Coffee at that temperature, if spilled, causes third-degree burns (the skin is burned away down to the muscle/fatty-tissue layer) in two to seven seconds; - Third-degree burns do not heal without skin grafting, debridement and whirlpool treatments that cost tens of thousands of dollars and result in permanent disfigurement, extreme pain and disability of the victim for many months, and in some cases, years; - The chairman of the department of mechanical engineering and bio-mechanical engineering at the University of Texas testified that this risk of harm is unacceptable, as did a widely recognized expert on burns, the editor in chief of the leading scholarly publication in the specialty, the Journal of Burn Care and Rehabilitation; - McDonald's admitted that it has known about the risk of serious burns from its scalding hot coffee for more than 10 years -- the risk was brought to its attention through numerous other claims and suits, to no avail; - From 1982 to 1992, McDonald's coffee burned more than 700 people, many receiving severe burns to the genital area, perineum, inner thighs, and buttocks; - Not only men and women, but also children and infants, have been burned by McDonald's scalding hot coffee, in some instances due to inadvertent spillage by McDonald's employees; - At least one woman had coffee dropped in her lap through the service window, causing third-degree burns to her inner thighs and other sensitive areas, which resulted in disability for years; - Witnesses for McDonald's admitted in court that consumers are unaware of the extent of the risk of serious burns from spilled coffee served at McDonald's required temperature; - McDonald's admitted that it did not warn customers of the nature and extent of this risk and could offer no explanation as to why it did not; - McDonald's witnesses testified that it did not intend to turn down the heat -- As one witness put it: “No, there is no current plan to change the procedure that we're using in that regard right now;” - McDonald's admitted that its coffee is “not fit for consumption” when sold because it causes severe scalds if spilled or drunk; - Liebeck's treating physician testified that her injury was one of the worst scald burns he had ever seen; - Moreover, the Shriner’s Burn Institute in Cincinnati had published warnings to the franchise food industry that its members were unnecessarily causing serious scald burns by serving beverages above 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
Here is a question, at what temperature do you brew your coffee? And when you answer above 180 degrees, here is another question, if you go somewhere to buy coffee do you ask them to serve you coffee that has been sitting around cooling so that it isn't hot? She didn't (or any of the others that were injured by hot liquid) order an ice coffee, and unlikely bothered to ask an old cup, when you order coffee you WANT the freshest cup possible and that means it will be above the "keeping warm" temp. Seriously, if you are buying hot coffee and don't know it is hot then you a more than a little dense, it takes near boiling liquid to make (well most of the time other than cold brewed, not the point) you shouldn't have to hand out flyers for something that is common sense. You are kinda expecting a company to tell every person not to pour hot liquid on themselves because it might hurt them. So when I make a fresh cup of coffee, then try removing the very tight lid from the cup in a cramped space, and somehow manage to spill it on myself who do I sue? We constantly take risks in our lives, they are calculated and we know that we risk various harms from them, making/drinking hot beverages is just another one of those risks. The situation sucks when you make a mistake and get hurt, but as with this case, it is still our fault and not the product that we know is dangerous to begin with. End of the day, while I feel bad for anyone who accidently burns themselves in such a way, it is still their doing and you have no right to demand that a company pay for your mistake, this isn't a product defect. This woman could have waited till she was somewhere else to play with her coffee and would have probably been just fine (hell it would have cooled a little by then even), but no she decided to pry off the lid holding a flexible cup of hot liquid over her lap and when this bad idea caused her harm she blamed someone else instead of herself. Not going to defend McDonalds PR, they messed up by being a little belligerent, but so would I if someone had just demanded I pay for their hospital bills for selling them hot coffee.
well i'm glad you didn't bother typing out a complete thought or even a partial explanation of why you bothered, that way I can simply write you off as a mindless troll that is doing exactly what Seth was talking about, following along with the crowd with the limited knowledge given. Congrats for exemplifying your own comment.
Oh yes, I'm getting paid off by McDonalds for pointing out an individual being a dipshit and greedy sue happy American... oh wait, if I was a "corporate bootlicker" I'd be ok with greed. You win the dumb fucking comment of the night award. But Hey I think you have some cheese stuck in one of your chins from your burger there, wouldn't want you to get your safe space dirty then you might trip and have to sue your parents for not warning you that you are a hazard to yourself.
Very much appreciated Seth and recall times when I didn't hit the pause button to jump and share information I would later discover was faulty. I am becoming more a skeptical thinker in my heathen journey but without shame, I challenge religion with a common sense style of reasoning. I never claim points I make as proofs of evidence, but I understand and respect atheist activists who stick to using only arguments that are within the rules of logic. I guess I feel there is room for being creative in looking at a Bible story and instead of just throwing the usual where is the evidence and declaring the story is a myth, I try to challenge the story at a personal level in light of humanity and light of how people perceive god keeping in mind the claims of his character. "For the sake of argument," "let's assume this story was true" followed by a common sense idea or question. I think this is a worthy question to ask as atheist activists. I know there are many reasons why many atheists are quiet even when they show interest in activism. Personal safety, being potentially tossed out of homes, losing jobs, etc. But I do wonder if some people hold back their own potential creativity out of fear of being a part of an intelligent thinking community that will quickly point out their fallacy of reasoning. As I say this, it's good to receive constructive criticism and be aware of a technical fallacy. I lead a group on Facebook called Ingenious Atheist, which is the collective group encouraging unique creative ways to challenge religious beliefs with different artistic talents and fresh techniques. The group is great but it's still quiet and I want to draw the potential within the group out. Any advice from yourself or any other atheist reading this is welcome. I should ask Matt Dillahunty as well, such a high respect for his ability to debate. I love the work you do Seth. Keep it up.
Excellent talk, Seth. I learned the details about Stella Liebeck, courtesy of the HBO documentary, _Hot Coffee,_ which dug further into the whole "tort reform" business, a pernicious issue at best, as revealed in the piece. I suspect my daughter, who is a journalist, would say, "Where's your second source?" Where, indeed.
When I worked as a barista I used a thermometer to steam milk and always stopped between 120 and never over 140 because it would burn the milk and be way too hot to drink, also dangerous.
I own the book "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion." One of the best books I have ever owned. I also recommend "The 48 Laws of Power" by Robert Greene. Excellent speech yet again, Mr. Andrews. I truly admire you and hope to here you speak in person one day. I wish you the best in everything. Be Well 🖖🤘🖖
There’s a similar “ crocodile story “ in a book called “The Poisonwood Bible”. In the book, a fundamentalist preacher in the Congo, tries to gather people at a nearby river, where locals had been attacked, and killed, by crocodiles. He couldn’t understand why people who had been somewhat interested in his evangelizing, wouldn’t want baptism, but the villagers were alarmed that the missionary apparently wanted to feed them to crocodiles in the river. As I recall, the title of the book came from a quirk in the local language, that, if not pronounced exactly, the word “Jesus” was the word for a plant that caused a severe rash, called “poisonwood”, and the missionary didn’t bother to learn the proper way to avoid the mispronunciation.
Seth is amazing at interweaving, very serious subjects, with comedy in the production of slides, and in his speeches to keep them from getting too heavy.
Very nicely done. I would add to the agenda of atheists, religious people, and human beings in general: we want validation of what we believe. That social validation is extremely important, because it lends power to our beliefs, and power-seeking is the engine of survival. Without that social validation, our beliefs are irrelevant.
I am studying my graduate diploma in lifestyle medicine. I was originally a nurse but found that I was dissatisfied with how western medicine was handling health issues. After 4 decades I have found myself doing what I was meant to do. During those 40 years I first went plant-based, then vegan, then atheist. During that time of personal evolution, I have had to UNLEARN more than I have had to learn. I too feel overwhelmed and anxious when faced with so much conflicting information. I feel the stress of too many voices, many raised in anger, some of which are my own. I appreciate the time and wisdom of Seth Andrews in sharing his thoughts here.
I wasn't aware that a judge could rule for a change in the amount of damages awarded by a jury. Why have a jury hear the case in the first place if their judgement can be overridden?
The world will be a better place when we make it a habit to sometimes stop to ask ourselves and others:' What reasons do I(or you) have to believe this and are those good reasons to believe it?'
I don't like playing the role of the judge or the victim. I do my best to walk with the path of heart.the things I'm saying should not be confused with any religious teaching. That we are beings of awareness and consciousness.
1:26 the first thing i do is switch on the pc and check to see if the worlds still here or if the northern hemisphere is now a sea of thermonuclear flames ... the next thought is ...sigh ... whats he done now...
Now, I KNOW all the fans of Seth understand this. But since no one so far has said it, I will: Science and rational thinking offers no comfort in time of need. And shirly against death. This is our greatest obstacle in promoting atheism.
No, the Chinese curse is not: _"we live in interesting times"_ The Chinese curse is: _"may you live in interesting times"_ If it's not a genuine Chinese curse, it's "ben trovato" - it sounds so polite and when you look at the terms, it is not quite so friendly. At least not for most who live in such times.
**PLEASE ** _We need more of this out there._ It's FAR too late to _prevent_ the fleecing of 'Merica, our only hope now is to TRY to UNFLEECE the sheeple. But I'm afraid it may already be far too late...
The one thing I would change about this talk is it's title. I don't think people speak "half truths" or whole truths. They just speak frozen or conceptualized views. The rest of the talk is great.
I was reminded about believers' "Out of context!"-objection to bible quotes. Their problem, of course, is that often the actual context is more damning!
Interesting Times is the title of a Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett, and is set in an oriental (Discworld) country. The saying is indeed meant as a negative thing in the book. I don’t know how it ends yet, there’s still 1/4 I haven’t read yet.
this is why i always have a hard time to trust anything, especially from internet, and furthermore my own anecdotal memory, i always have to double check everything before i believe it i have enough of being lie too my entire young live, so much so i did become a priest, a fucking pentecostal priest, a frikin creationist pentecostal priest, so ever since i was liberated by science and become a freeminded atheist, i have a bit of trust issue
Authority is the strongest for Christians around me. My grandmother will believe any owner and also thinks they know more about anything than anything she ever can
But it is about information. In every of examples about subject, the perspective changed with new information added, that was excluded in previous presentation of the case. So, new information always changes perspective.
I don’t think that’s right in these cases, although your point is generally valid. In these cases the information was already there: not new, just not surfaced.
It's been around a long time, at least a decade. I know I've used it before. I'm sure it's still probably floating around the internet somewhere and can be found searching online.
I have a permanent dark scar around my wrist from my silver jewelry heating immediately around my wrist as I removed microwaved coffee and it slashed across my wrist. Also scalded myself at work across my thumb. Liquid expands in heat so the coffee had risen to the top and when I grabbed the cardboard cup, it squeezed the coffee and... Terrible burns...
I hardly share things these days beyond jokes or just things about ideas because life has gotten hectic and I don't have time to make sure what I'm sharing is the full story.
It's quite sobering hearing these stories and have Seth admit being duped too. That's something quite rare for public figures to admit. Great talk Mr. Andrews!
Seth, I've been a huge fan for years. I love all your speeches. But this is honestly the best thing you've done to date. Amazingly well done.
This should be a TED talk. Fantastic job
He is an amazing speaker!
He just seems to get better and better at this. Awesome presentation!
Absolutely!
It would have to be trimmed a lot. I think that would take away from the excellentness.
YES!!! Please please make this into TED talk!!!!
Great lecture. This video should be required viewing for anyone signing up for social media accounts. This is certainly worth sharing with friends and family. It's embarrassing how easily we are deceived and emotionally engaged.
It was cool seeing you in Orlando. Thank you. I'm the guy standing by the wall with glasses, clapping at 42:37
I was seriously concerned when you started with this story because I knew the background and have heard it misrepresented SO MANY TIMES... But of course, Seth, you pulled it out beautifully! Thank you for an excellent job and thank you for a great total presentation!
My dream is to one day be able to talk as clearly and as coherent as Seth Andrews (and not say "um" and "uh").
Another couple bad ones to avoid are "like" and "so", it is difficult to get over the habit of using these filler words when speaking, let alone when doing so to an audience.
Record yourself talking and force yourself to listen to the recording multiple times. Repeat that on a regular basis. It should help tremendously.
Toastmasters :)
It takes practice. When you feel an "um" coming, just pause instead. If Toastmasters is in your area, they might be able to help you develop those skills.

Seth is so accessible. No word salad, no talking to prove how smart he is. Just clear and easy. I love Hitchens, Harris and Matt D, but Seth is more easy on the ears.
Hey , great to read your comment . A very accurate view of Seth. I find his story telling great.
Once again, Seth proves he can teach us,
Seth, it was a pleasure to have met your acquaintance. You're a very insightful man and I hope you make it back to Winter Park again soon.
Confirmation Bias.
I thought the Wizard's First Rule was to never put your video and audio controls behind a curtain in your main audience chamber.
Liked and shared. Thanks for this. My great grandmother believed all TV advertising. She would say "There was a young doctor on TV last night saying how good (a particular medicine) is. The actor wore a white coat and had a stethoscope therefore he was a doctor.
Love you, Seth... You're a true voice of reason and a great example of someone with great compassion for all walks of life.

Very important subject
It was a amazing to see you here in Orlando. It was my first time. It was also my wife’s first time to atheist exposure and believe that you helped see things in a different perspective.
Giving this a thumbs up. Then again I'm biased when it comes to Seth :-)
Blessed? WTH?
Seth is by far a powerful speaker. Never miss a chance to hear iis message.
2018: "'may you live in interesting times'? I dunno about you, but I wish times were less interesting"
2020: "Did someone say you wanted to live in more interesting times?"
Yet another fantastic presentation by Seth! Fascinating information delivered with humor, compassion, & humility.

Wonderfully on point for today and every tomorrow. Would've loved to see this live. Guess there's always next year...

so far my all time favorite video on the interwebs, ever
Before any of you corporate white knights jump on the Lieback case, please consider the following facts brought to the jury during the trial:

- Witnesses for McDonald's admitted in court that consumers are unaware of the extent of the risk of serious burns from spilled coffee served at McDonald's required temperature;
- McDonald's admitted that it did not warn customers of the nature and extent of this risk and could offer no explanation as to why it did not;
- McDonald's witnesses testified that it did not intend to turn down the heat -- As one witness put it: “No, there is no current plan to change the procedure that we're using in that regard right now;”
- McDonald's admitted that its coffee is “not fit for consumption” when sold because it causes severe scalds if spilled or drunk;
- Liebeck's treating physician testified that her injury was one of the worst scald burns he had ever seen;
- Moreover, the Shriner’s Burn Institute in Cincinnati had published warnings to the franchise food industry that its members were unnecessarily causing serious scald burns by serving beverages above 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

Terrific, Seth. So well paced and informative. Thanks.
Congratulations on 333K and yes I still listen and play your speeches 😊
Seth, Thank you for helping man become mankind.
Excellent video! Thanks for all you do!
One of the best yet!
Context? Nah, I'd rather be blindly enraged about everything and stay willfully ignorant.
Always a brilliant and entertaining presentation! Well done. Thanks for sharing and for all you do.
This is truly Great! Love this presentation! You did an awesome job trying to make people think.
I cannot bestow enough "likes" on this!
Thank you, Seth!
(For the record, I acknowledge being guilty of _every_ flaw in character you address here.)
Very nicely done. I would add to the agenda of atheists, religious people, and human beings in general: we want validation of what we believe. That social validation is extremely important, because it lends power to our beliefs, and power-seeking is the engine of survival. Without that social validation, our beliefs are irrelevant.
Christ, watching this in December 2020. Excellent.
This is great! Thanks so much for sharing, Seth! Keep it up!
Excellent analysis, Seth! Something we all need to be conscious of in the world of social media.

The world will be a better place when we make it a habit to sometimes stop to ask ourselves and others:' What reasons do I(or you) have to believe this and are those good reasons to believe it?'
Excellent talk Seth!!
I could listen to you read “Art of the Deal” with that voice lol. Well done Seth
He has a great voice, doesn't he?
You've put a voice to my thoughts of the last 20 yrs or so , thought I was wondering in the wilderness , age gives u perspective if care to see .
He's the storyteller, and his story must be told.
Sorry, couldn't resist. Excellent presentation, highly enjoyable and funny as hell.
Great presentation Seth couldn't do it better myself.
I don't like playing the role of the judge or the victim. I do my best to walk with the path of heart.the things I'm saying should not be confused with any religious teaching. That we are beings of awareness and consciousness.
Those first 2 minutes hit different in 2020
1:26 the first thing i do is switch on the pc and check to see if the worlds still here or if the northern hemisphere is now a sea of thermonuclear flames ... the next thought is ...sigh ... whats he done now...
I didn't know Seth was a SJW. too bad.
Better be an SJW, than a Drumpf sycophant.
MrChiangching
As a skeptic you should be aware: SJWs don't exist. They're a boogeyman based on a strawman.
@@silkwesir1444 boogeymen don't exist.
@@Lewa500 Drumpf sycophant? you don't know me , moron.
Now, I KNOW all the fans of Seth understand this. But since no one so far has said it, I will:
Science and rational thinking offers no comfort in time of need. And shirly against death. This is our greatest obstacle in promoting atheism.
No, the Chinese curse is not:
_"we live in interesting times"_
The Chinese curse is:
_"may you live in interesting times"_
If it's not a genuine Chinese curse, it's "ben trovato" - it sounds so polite and when you look at the terms, it is not quite so friendly. At least not for most who live in such times.
Everyone needs to watch this video
A thin line between faith and madness
**PLEASE ** _We need more of this out there._ It's FAR too late to _prevent_ the fleecing of 'Merica, our only hope now is to TRY to UNFLEECE the sheeple. But I'm afraid it may already be far too late...
Great subject. Awesome presentation, congratulations.
Off-topic but I love how at 32:06 when he says "I could likely manipulate your perception" the video starts vibrating like crazy.
The moment I felt freedom from religion allowed a relief still remembered. I hope others experienced a similar escape.
The one thing I would change about this talk is it's title. I don't think people speak "half truths" or whole truths. They just speak frozen or conceptualized views. The rest of the talk is great.
Who is the hero and who is the villain, can depend on where your standing at the time
excellent video... I'm going to look for that book, I studied psych of persuasion many years ago and I think it's past time for an update
I was reminded about believers' "Out of context!"-objection to bible quotes. Their problem, of course, is that often the actual context is more damning!
Seth never disappoints.
Very nice work Seth. I enjoy your talks. Keep em coming. Like and share his vids so they can be seen more people.
Amazing presentation
What a great voice
Wow. This is so relevant to what is currently happening.
Seth is so handsome... Please make this into TED talk. So needed at this time.
Love the video, and wish I how did the sense to research things for myself.❤
Interesting Times is the title of a Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett, and is set in an oriental (Discworld) country. The saying is indeed meant as a negative thing in the book. I don’t know how it ends yet, there’s still 1/4 I haven’t read yet.
Very thought provoking!
Excellent presentation.
Great job. Sorry I missed it in person though. I will definitely be present next time you are in Florida.
I remember watching Making a Murderer and being duped by it. When I got the facts I was honestly angry with myself
this is why i always have a hard time to trust anything, especially from internet, and furthermore my own anecdotal memory, i always have to double check everything before i believe it
i have enough of being lie too my entire young live, so much so i did become a priest, a fucking pentecostal priest, a frikin creationist pentecostal priest, so ever since i was liberated by science and become a freeminded atheist, i have a bit of trust issue
"May you live in interesting times..." is a quote from Terry Pratchet's Disc world epos.
Anyone know where to find that animation he played after the baseball video? Where the stick man is mashing his hands and face on the keyboard?
It's been around a long time, at least a decade. I know I've used it before. I'm sure it's still probably floating around the internet somewhere and can be found searching online.
I have a permanent dark scar around my wrist from my silver jewelry heating immediately around my wrist as I removed microwaved coffee and it slashed across my wrist. Also scalded myself at work across my thumb. Liquid expands in heat so the coffee had risen to the top and when I grabbed the cardboard cup, it squeezed the coffee and... Terrible burns...
Seth, you are the man 👌🏻
I hardly share things these days beyond jokes or just things about ideas because life has gotten hectic and I don't have time to make sure what I'm sharing is the full story.
Well done Seth that was excellent. 👏
