I've been living with cancer from since 2001, without any treatment. The only form of treatment I would consider is immunotherapy. But I can't afford it right now. All I did was change my diet (including avoiding meals & and beverages that are his in sugar and sodium), stay active, drink lots of water, and do lots of breathing exercise. I am not a christian. And I do not pray.

My sister died last Friday at age 20 after a year and a half long battle with cancer. It was already stage 4 when it was discovered, and so the most doctors were able to do was to delay the progression. My wife and I are the "black sheep atheists" in a Christian family, and so it has been even harder on us having to not only watch a beautiful young girl with limitless potential wither away and die, but also to endure the ceaseless praise of God for "the gift of suffering", for the miracle healing (that didn't happen), and then most recently, the post hoc miracle of her being "rescued from pain" by death.
I just wanted to personally thank you, Seth, this video was exactly the light-hearted discussion of the topic I needed. I've been a big fan of your videos for a long time, but between the discussion topic and the coincidentally apt time of release, this one is especially meaningful. If I were a more superstitious sort, I might be prone to suspect it was meant to be :P Thanks again.

So instead of recognizing that this life is only a blink of an eye compared to eternity with God, you choose to mock Him and celebrate an atheist worldview that would argue that your brother's life had NO MEANING?!? Yea that's foolishness. Under Darwinian evolution, cancer is just another natural mutation and your sister was weak due from being unable to adapt to change. Therefore it's better she didn't get to live and pass on his weak genes to the next generation because he wasn't more fit than other people and was a burden to the State and society. THAT is the actual atheist materialist worldview! So sick and tired of atheists STEALING from the Christian worldview, arguing from objective Truth and Morality for a worldview that rejects both. The fact is, God doesn't have to SAVE ANYONE!!! God is Holy, man is fallen and totally depraved. God made creation Good, man disobeyed Him and screwed everything up so if anything, blame MAN. That's like a thief trying to blame a judge for him being in jail and for all the trouble in his life he got into by stealing.

This is why after being in a coma for 6 weeks, I went back to the ICU a year later after learning how to walk all over again to thank the doctors, therapists, and technicians for keeping me alive and bringing me out of the coma and giving them credit to all they do and sacrificed to learn their disciplines and professions. It was an emotional moment and they greatly appreciated me touching base with them after all that time.

Thom Grogan Thank you for doing that. I’ve worked in the medical field for years and have seen hundreds of trauma alerts flown in by helicopter. The pilot expertly gets them to the hospital, the trauma Dr.’s, RN’s, radiologists, RT’s, ARNP’s, PA’s, lab personnel, etc. take it from there. Most patients go to surgery then ICU where they are cared for by skilled staff for days, weeks, months and even years. Of those with a good outcome, god is given “all the glory”. For those that have an “ok” outcome, god is thanked for sparing their life. For those who don’t make it, “god needed another angel”. As I watch everyone involved put everything they’ve got into these patients care, getting not even a nod in their direction, it’s all I can do to not scream out, “You idiots! No god or gods did this! The ones who did are standing right in front of you for fucks sake!” So, thank you. You have no idea how much that REALLY meant to them.

      @serraven4838 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Lori W As someone on the patient side of things I can say not all of us can find the people who saved us to say thank you after we've come to. Often we don't know who did it because we were out of our minds and busy trying to not die. But, I'll say thank you to you because you've done many amazing things to save people. I've been saved by docs and nurses but I don't know which ones. Also been saved by medicines and techniques invented by people who died before I was born. It's not wrong of me to say thank you to you because it's all linked - all the healthcare and science that led to me not popping my clogs too early. I'm certain there are people who would thank you that you've saved if they knew where to find you. There must be. There are plenty of docs and nurses I would thank if I knew where to find them. :)

And just like that my faith collapsed like a house of cards. God, Jesus, devil, heaven, hell, church, religion, bible, all of it all gone in a moment of realization. After a lifetime of belief, after decades of fervent religion and faith and prayer. It was because I really believed, really had faith, in all of it. All tied together through the Word of God, The Bible, The Church, that it all collapsed. It was all tied together as One. If that wasn't true, then none of it was.

Say to yourself, 'My ideal, my religion, my desire is to please my Lord before whom I bow my head. So when I am before anyone, I am before my Lord, my God. I must take care always to be considerate and thoughtful, lest I hurt my God.' That is the real religion. If you take care not to hurt a loved one, a friend, but do not mind hurting a servant, or wicked or foolish person, that will not be real religion. Love will recognize the ideal of love, the divine ideal, in every heart, and will refrain from using words which will make others unhappy; words expressing pride, thoughtless words, sarcastic words, any word which will disturb a person's peace of mind, or hurt his sensibilities.
Good deeds, kindness, forgiveness, tolerance, acts of love, none of these are ever lost, and some day they will return to us. Even if the recipient appears ungrateful or heedless, it is all the same. There is no need to be disappointed even if he proves to be unworthy of our kindness and our love. When we realize that all life is one life, we discover that it is to that life that we give our love and kindness and mercy. Then it is bound to return to us, if not today, perhaps next week. If not next week, perhaps next year. If not here, then somewhere where we never expected it could possibly come. 'Thou shalt find it after many days.'
Though there may still be time to awaken to a true understanding of these things, it is often too late by the time that sufferings, troubles, and misery have come to the individual or to the multitude. If someone has so far failed to understand them before they actually came, perhaps he will never understand. When there is some little pain or he feels bad in himself, he may think he has some illness. But if he does not think about it, if he takes no notice of it, something worse may come. And so it has been with the world. The worst evil that has ever been should show man that it is now time to awaken and understand that it is not a study of national or social problems, not a study of religious questions that will bring an everlasting peace; but it is the insight into life which is the real religion and which alone can help man to understand life.

So instead of recognizing that this life is only a blink of an eye compared to eternity with God, you choose to mock Him and celebrate an atheist worldview that would argue that your brother's life had NO MEANING?!? Yea that's foolishness. Under Darwinian evolution, cancer is just another natural mutation and your brother was weak due from being unable to adapt to change. Therefore it's better he didn't get to live and pass on his weak genes to the next generation because he wasn't more fit than other people and was a burden to the State and society. THAT is the actual atheist materialist worldview! So sick and tired of atheists STEALING from the Christian worldview, arguing from objective Truth and Morality for a worldview that rejects both.

I lost my faith during my divorce. A very trying time at which I did what I felt like was the, right thing, I turned to god for strength. Through prayer and bible study I reached out for God's hand, I sought his wisdom, in the right places. And during my quest to be nearer to him, he was completely silent and indifferent to my heartache. Instead of finding wisdom in his book, I found outrageous claims, stories that defy logic, contradictions, paradoxes, discrepancies and a god who, the more I learned about him, was fucked up. A god who is very much different than his handbook claims he is.
222 I pondered the plausibility of an all powerful immortal being who can simply think "GALAXY" and a galaxy would pop into existence, but he is so caught up in the affairs of pathetic humans (his children that he loves so much,) so needy of our loyalty, our worship, but he gets so distracted when I masturbate that thousands of children starve to death. As one or the comments said, he is no different than an abusive boyfriend. Anyone would advise a woman who chose to stay with her boyfriend for the fear of what he would do if she tried to leave him to get away from the man. . We comdemn a man who is like this. But we worship a god who is the same way.
So I lost god attempting to find him. I didn't choose to become agnostic or atheist, I exercised my freewill to remain a believer, to strengthen my belief. And in doing so I discovered god to be absolutely beyond belief.
What kind of god would create me, design me to be all the things I am, give me freewill to choose him or not, yet when I make the choice to believe he is so god damn elusive and his book so full of bullshit that I lose faith. I chose him, looked for him in thee proper places. He knows exactly how I think, he sees me reach for him and he ducks undermine table, sabotages my search for him, and I suppose condemns me to hell for being good. Wtf

'Imaginary bullshit, like the universe creating itself, and we are all sitting here discussing this out of coincidence.'
Who stated that the universe created itself from nothing?! NOBODY but creationists seem to actually make this demand. All evidence points to a time when the universe was once much smaller than it is now and physics allows us to explore this mathematically right down to the tiniest fraction of a second. All known physics prior to this point breaks down and this is why no self respecting physicist ever claims that the universe came from nothing. Nobody has mathematics that reaches t=0 so nobody should claim to know the origins of the universe or anything any earlier than the mathematics allow us to claim as knowledge. To claim the universe came from nothing is either disingenuous or uneducated. This is not the claim of science whatsoever.
Ultimately it would seem that you are from the god corner so lets hear your explanation of the origins of your deity? Where did this omnipotent, omniscient being actually come from?!! You see it matters not how much you object to atheism, facts are things that we can test. It never ceases to amuse me how theists demand the existence of a creator but mindlessly just accept such an omnipotent being merely happening to exist and how do you defend this position? You merely slap a label on it that 'god just IS' and that he 'exists outside of space and time'! All points you have no way of verifying or justifying. Face it, nobody is any worse off just stating that the universe sprang into being by magic! This in fact is exactly what you demand too! That your god is able to make matter from absolutely nothing. It is the demand of the theist that god makes things from nothing. Science DOES NOT claim that the universe came from nothing, merely that to the best of our knowledge came from an extremely dense singularity. This is where the maths leads and NO FURTHER. To claim knowledge of anything prior to this point is dishonest.

'How in the hell am I going to explain where God comes from? Stop and think about how nonsense that question is.'
No, YOU stop and think how nonsense YOUR entire argument is! Your entire premise is based on the notion that something cannot come from nothing therefore . . . . . GOD! Don't you even marginally grasp the double standard YOU so easily and thoughtlessly create here? Why don't YOU try and explain why the question 'where did god come from?' is any different or unreasonable than the question 'where did the universe come from?' because as far as I can tell, neither question is any less fair!
'ATHEISTS which mos scientists are, claim the universe created itself from nothing, that there was no God involved.'
      NO, THEY DON'T!!!!!
'You did a lot of typing to get nowhere.'
Yes, again I find myself in the empty void of the creationists mind. I don't know how many times I have to point out that *SCIENTISTS DO NOT CLAIM THAT THE UNIVERSE CAME FROM NOTHING!!!!* Creationists seem unable to grasp how very wrong they are to make this claim in the first instance. Scientists claim that the universe began as an extremely dense point known as the singularity. All evidence points to this being the case and it was in fact this apparent origin that led scientists to hypothesise about the CMB (cosmic microwave background radiation) which was later discovered and thus added verification to the scientific method which had first led to the conclusion of the universes origin. Once again, allow me to be abundantly clear on this point: *SCIENTISTS DO NOT CLAIM THAT THE UNIVERSE CAME FROM NOTHING!!!!*
Now lets move back to the god hypothesis and see just how silly this conclusion actually is. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that you believe that the universe must have once been nothing whatsoever rather than having always been? I'll work on this assumption since you guys seem obsessed with this notion of nothing being the beginning and some form of supernatural MAGIC being used to then create all matter. You see I find this demand particularly annoying. You are so hung up and assertive that there must have once been nothing that you demand this is the case. . . . . except for GOD! Oh no, god gets his own special place! Matter is not allowed to exist without a prime mover to make it exist but that prime mover is allowed quite mindlessly to just BE! What is your issue with matter existing IN THE BEGINNING (or more technically, energy but I'll not go too deep into that!)? How can you object so harshly and yet wilfully and ignorantly claim the existence of a god for which you have no explanation? You are merely trying to explain the origin of something that we don't have an explanation for by demanding the existence of something you also cannot explain! But lets just investigate this a little further. . .
Not only do you demand the existence of this god you have no evidence for and think requires NO explanation but then further that this god has the power to make something from NOTHING! What you are actually invoking is nothing more than MAGIC! Your attempt to explain the existence of something requires a BELIEF that a being of sorts just happens to exist in the beginning without any requirement for being created AND that this being has the power to create matter from nothing! This is even MORE absurd than claiming that matter just sprung into existence by magic itself! Even with a pretend god, you still have to pretend to know that this deity is able to make matter without ANY starting materials whatsoever! All you've done is created an impossible situation where god exists AND that this god then creates things with no raw materials. This is a more absurd claim than demanding that matter comes into existence by sheer magic. Regardless of these points, *SCIENTISTS DO NOT CLAIM THAT THE UNIVERSE CAME FROM NOTHING!!!!* This simple point is one you should try to grasp or if you feel that I am wrong then show me where scientists are making this absolute claim because I'm telling you this is NOT the case.

For god to be glorified in this he would have to be doing something, but he does nothing. Every day I drive by a church sign on my routes and it reads "my god can do anything." I keep wondering why he does nothing. Maybe I have not understood yet that god works in mysterious ways.

'@Glenn Carr ....Death and suffering, often including agonizing pain is hard for the mind to process.'
Not when you grasp why we mourn and why we feel pain. Nothing more than mental attachments to those we care for and pain a largely unnecessary thing that has helped us to survive through generations and thus endure to this day. Pain hits people who KNOW they have a damaged nerve for example but they can't turn it off. They suffer unnecessarily even though they can understand the cause of the pain and take steps to protect themselves from damage. Pain is an evolved trait that forces us to protect damage to our bodies and thus increases recovery. Why couldn't a sky daddy merely make us like computers that KNOW when something is wrong WITHOUT pain? Makes no sense since we can do this as humans. Watch as your engine management light comes on through simple human ingenuity and yet the car feels no pain. Especially chronic pain that causes people to commit suicide at times! Is god crap at making computers? Evidently so since the all future seeing god never so much as mentions a microprocessor in the bible! Its almost as though it was written by people who had NO IDEA of modern science. Sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one.
' In my family of six kids, three died before the age of thirty. '
I genuinely feel for your loss. It must have been an awful thing to endure.
      'Yet I don't blame God.'
Nor should you, there is no evidence that one exists. Yet if there were then you should be angry at the scumbag for not dong everything he could to save them. Would you choose to not help others that were dying as a human? I know I would! Nothing excuses a real caring gods inactions. . .
'Jesus is not God, he is God's son the firstborn of creation.'
Nobody seems to actually know since most people claim that he is the FATHER, SON and the HOLY GHOST! Why can't you believers even agree on a common theme here? So screwed up.
'He had to be fully human and no more or less to provide the ransom.'
Ransom? What ransom are you talking about?!! The story is that Jesus died for our sins, well, at least that's the claim the vast majority of you make.
'We are not paying for the sins of our father Adam.'
      Christopher, my dad's called Chris.. . . .
' At the moment of sin he became genetically faulty and simply passed on flawed traits based on the laws of heredity.'
Right, I get it now. So then god failed when he said that the son shall not suffer for the sins of the father in Ezekiel 18:20. God is omnipotent and could correct the DNA damage with the mere passage of a thought. Lets face it, this all had to propagate from Adams kids (at least if you were right) so sky daddy only needed to correct their minor mutations in order to ensure he kept his word in Ezekiel 18:20 right? You seem like a nice guy and I quickly lose patience with empty comments. Your loss is truly awful and tragic. It's not the fault of any god but a mere result of reality. It is sad but we all love and lose. I really do feel for your loss though. I can't begin to imagine how awful that must be and I didn't even have any kids. God clearly stated (if you believe the book) that the son shall not suffer for the sins of the father. God clearly failed (if there were such a thing)
'If Adam had children before his sin they would have remained perfect, passing on perfect life to their offspring. '
Irrelevant. God still failed to ensure that his claim in Ezekiel 18:20 was upheld. The omniscient omnipotent being is clearly a liar. The fact he is omnipotent and still allowed this (claimed) genetic fault to be passed to every human ensured that he failed EVERY human in his claim following Adsy and Evie!
'Time is needed to show conclusively that violation of God's laws brings only bad, to provide a ransom that was prophesied far in advance, and to prove that man would not be like God after eating the fruit, being able to choose for themselves what is right and wrong without harmful repercussions.'
Apparently time is needed in order to continue to disprove more and more biblical claims since there are a great number of people still gullible enough to buy into this horseshit.
You really do come across as a well meaning guy and I can't express my sorrow at your personal loss. It must be horrible to live with. I hope you can study the other side of the bible and learn that you have been duped. I have loved and lost and I will lose again and again (probably) before eventually succumbing to the rigors of biological aging. I could tell you a hundred or more facts that show the bible is nothing more than a work of man but if I'm honest I don't want to. If you insist to continue then I will present my case but I feel you take a level of comfort from the bible and the ideas it portrays. your losses are extreme and I have no inclination to add to your suffering. I underwent brain surgery. Every day, three times a day, nurses came to see me. They checked to see if my heartrate was good, if my blood had enough oxygen. They checked to see if I was still me, checked if my brain was working right. They made me get up and walk, supervised me to make sure the guy with a bit of his skull glued back into place didn't fall over and die.
Every day, doctors came to follow up, some to give me information about what happened, others to ask where I wanted to go from there, what my options were.
Every day, people came along with little carts and picked up trash, washed the floors, disinfected surfaces, so that diseases couldn't spread and kill people, like me, who had a flap of skin sewn back on.
When I was in pain, I was given medication (and, surprisingly, *brain surgery* causes very little pain, go figure). In case the surgery did some unexpected damage, I was given anti-convulsion medication, so I wouldn't hurt myself. Someone, somewhere, is cleaning out the giant metal drum where the powders and liquids for all those meds are being mixed, someone is carefully measuring and mixing those components, someone is checking the quality so that I don't die when I take a pill from contamination. Every day, I had three meals delivered. Bland, but good quality, and I could request a snack at any time of day, and I could ask to see the nutritionist and say "I don't like cheese" and my meals would be personalized to not have any cheese, just like everybody else's personalized meals, out of hundreds of patients, three times a day, every day.
One of the most prominent rooms in one of the most commonly traveled hallways on the ground floor was the "spiritual services" chapel. There was never anybody in there. No parasitical scumbag came to bother me in my room with empty words demanding my eternal servitude, and if one such "priest" had come to visit me he would've left the room running with piss running down his pant leg out of the talking-to he would've gotten from the guy with a hole in his skull.
I suspect I know *EXACTLY* why no scumbag parasite came by our floor. It doesn't pay to advertise for the guy you claim invented cancer *on the cancer patient floor of the hospital.*
None of the nurses, doctors, cleaners, cooks, or plethora of other personnel that I can't even name (like the social worker who helped me write my last will and testament just in case the surgery went bad, because yeah, that service was provided too) asked anything of me but to get better.
I'm Canadian. It didn't even cost me a dime. My monthly pills cost me 20-25$ a month. I've had two MRIs and am waiting for a third, a PET scan, other scans I can't even label or recognize. I've had my skull cut open and then put back together. I have stitches in the back of my scalp. I have a custom-made plastic facemask that was used to hold my head still as an expensive machine shot radiation directly into what was left of the tumor after the surgery, which I've kept as compensation (the mask, not the machine) for the hair I'm missing that will never grow back. The most the hospital asked of me was my hospital card. Oh, and a bunch of my blood. Which was the worst part for me, because I don't handle blood and veins very well. Brain surgery, no problem. Blood sample? Panic attack. We've all got _something..._
At no point in any of this did any deity send an agent to extort me for "services rendered". At no point did any divine spin doctor come and explain why I _had_ to be born with a couple mutations that meant I would 100% get cancer in my 30s, why it was vital for the sake of the universe that I be inconvenienced by having a bit of my dead brain scooped out and be left partially blind for good measure. At no point did any angel come and mention as I was suffering and dying for two years that the pain in my side was the colon cancer growing a tumor the size of a tennisball, or that the cancer would come back and metastasize and go to my brain a year and a half later.
    Why?
Because God isn't real. None of them are. I'm not "angry at God" for "doing this to me" any more than I'm angry at Voldemort for killing my house elf, because house elves don't exist and neither does Voldemort. I don't blame God, any god, for what happened to me. It's a simple consequence of genetics. I live in Canada so, overall, these experiences have been pretty painless. I'm not in debt for life, I don't have to stress out about back payments, I might not even be on the anti-epilepsy meds for much longer, which would be nice, not that 25$ a month is a huge expense.
You don't curse the Rain Spirit when it rains. It might be inconvenient for you for it to rain _today of all days_ but there's no Rain Spirit to blame and it isn't meant to punish _you,_ it's just a quirk of the water cycle.
Likewise, you don't curse God for creating cancer. Cancer's a terrible thing and I've been luckier than I really should have been with how survivable my two brushes with the big C have been, but there's no God to blame for it and it isn't meant to punish or extort or scare me into compliance. It's just a quirk of genetics.
But... if God *DID* exist, and all this stuff happened? He'd be History's worst villain. The entirety of fiction would be dedicated to attempting to murder God for his crimes against humanity. Every field of science would try to find some way of poisoning it so we could reclaim our lives. Every scientist in the world would be trying to rescue the souls of the dead, held captive and enslaved in order to stroke God's massive, throbbing... ego for all eternity.
If God did exist, he'd be the biggest, most murder-happy, vicious, monstrous, evil piece of shit in the universe. Good for all of us, then, that he's just a primitive myth.

Thank you for writing a profound comment that by rights should be memorialized for all, if such a thing were possible.
I'll share a short but similar story from my childhood. I was raised in a fundamentalist house on a small farm-orchard, whereon we grew most of our food by composting, fertilizing, planting, weeding, propping, thinning, spraying, smudging, harvesting, culling, picking, packing, canning and selling the products of at least 30 different kinds of trees and other plants. We also hunted, fished, raised meat of many kinds. After slaughter, hanging, butchering out, picking, skinning, cutting, smoking and otherwise cooking said meats, we could finally get our meals.
Before every meal a formal ritual was observed, without exception...a prayer was said to "our heavenly father", an absent character, who never showed up, thanking him for his bounty. I knew when I was very young something was awfully wrong, and that my parents had some form of insanity.

You guys are going to make me blush. I wasn't going to but I'll edit out the 'Gold' typo to the 'God' it should be in the Voldemort paragraph, if people are going to like the whole thing this much. It's been bothering me anyway.
I like Jeanette's story, too. God's even less reliable than a deadbeat dad who leaves while mom's pregnant and doesn't bother to write so little as a single check to help raise you, and then shows up when your first kid's born and expects to re-enter your life, and that's *IF* God existed, which we've pretty much established is nonsense at this point. At least deadbeat parents can be proven to exist by _genetics_ if nothing else, even after they vanish without a trace. You work hard your entire life and not for a single moment is any problem ever fixed for you by the undetectable hand of some imaginary extremely-part-time benefactor, and you're still expected to give away credit for your hard work.
That's what I wanted to make clear in the first place. Hundreds of people made my brain tumor go away, from the janitors to the surgeons, from the anesthesiologists to the cooks, from the secretaries to the pharmacists, to the pharmaceutical factory workers to the researchers who invented the products said workers make in the first place, to the chemists who discovered chemistry tracing back hundreds of years. Through all this, those uncountable people saved my life and the life of another uncountable number every day. I'm grateful to them. I can't ever know or remember all of their names, but I'm grateful to *them.* They did something. Day in, day out, they help, they heal, they work.
God's just some imaginary evildoer who's still ostensibly "out buying cigarettes" since before humanity was even born.

This video is one I can relate to. Several years ago, my youngest daughter was diagnosed with lymphoma. It was stage 4 when discovered. It had traveled to several lymph nodes. The only miracle she needed was an incredible doctor. We had a meeting with the doctor before treatment started. The thing that impressed me most was the doctor's attitude. As we were finishing up, Dr. Ospina leaned forward, put his hand on my daughter's knee as said, "Don't worry, we're going to kick its ass. Never were truer words spoken. After the fourth treatment, no cancer cells could be detected. She continued the treatment to the end. SHe also had a couple of radiation treatments as a precaution. The cancer cure was obtained by a great doctor, excellent treatment, and my daughter's will to live. No gawd thingy required.

Satan wants to kill you and take you to Hell and torment you forever. Satan can put evil thoughts and temptations into our minds. Satan can put evil ideas to say evil things. In the Bible, Jesus cast out 1,000 demons from a man possessed. God created Hell for Satan and his demons. Satan hates everybody and wants to take everyone to Hell and torment them forever. Thousands ARE in Hell already. Thousands more are going. Thousands don't believe in Hell. They will when they get there. Demons are waiting to torment them forever. ALL because they rejected Jesus and are evil. God created Heaven for all of us and wants to take everyone to Heaven. God is LOVE. God Loves you and wants to take you to Heaven. God so loved the world, he gave his only son Jesus to die for our sins that whosoever believes in him will never die but have everlasting life in Heaven. Jesus is the Truth, the life and the way. The ONLY way to Heaven. If you know the Truth, it will set you free from the bondage of Satan. Satan kills steals and destroys. Satan is a Liar and Deceiver. Satan is filthy and nasty. Jesus defeated Satan at the Cross. Repent and receive Jesus as your Savior. Make the right choice. I Did. Don't let Satan control you and take you to Hell and torment you forever. Jesus is Lord whether you believe it or not.

I have been around religion and the faithful for thirty plus years. I have never witnessed a Christian being healed and I have not found that the faithful live particularly more chaste lifestyles than the unchurched. Recently, I had a discussion with my extremely religious, rigid elderly mother of mine. I asked her why she disposed of the microwave that I gave her. She told me that a speaker at her church told her that microwaves were unsafe. When I questioned her she told me," you can believe what I want to and you can't convince me otherwise."
This thinking has kept her in religion for almost 70 years. She wants to continue in her ignorance.

@Jane Dough Actually Jane, a church doesn't speak for God, a church is a stepping stone to get past to talk to the Lord yourself. A preacher is like a god in a closet, so she didn't keep what they said in the closet. Sorry, but the preacher wrong about microwaves being unsafe. Now the older ones that were here decades ago were unsafe since those will still work with the door open. So no, you don't get to say that God agreed with someone and not the other, you're haven't asked for the truth from the Lord. A preacher can't tell what they haven't asked for yet.

    • @TexasScar
      @TexasScar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Jane Dough You are not correct mam, I'm not sure if you understand this, but we're not talking about taking our own blood at home and heating it in a microwave and consuming that blood. And also, HCFA cited the hospital in June 1991 for not adhering to policies. Blood normally is heated in specialized warming units that flush it through heated tubes. So no, the microwave isn't at fault, the Nurse is at fault for not adhering to policies. newsok.com/article/2364538/tulsa-hospital-fixes-blood-policy-defect
So I don't have to tell Mrs Levitt about her being killed off by a ignorant person of medical science who didn't follow policies. Blood is alive vs what we put in the microwave to heat up to eat or drink. And newsok.com/article/2431075/blood-warming-appeal-vowed
and this settles her death for $12,500 vs the 30 million they tried for law.justia.com/cases/oklahoma/court-of-appeals-civil/1995/4387.html

@@Bellg Yes, it is sad to see the pain or death of a child. Why is there pain? Is the universe like the ultimate practical joker? We all have dreams of what life can be but, ha ha!, you lose! Everything you love and hold dear will be ripped from your clutching fingers at death. Ha ha, you lose! Life is a bitch, then you die? Ha ha!, you lose?
I can honestly say that, for decades now, I have not even had one second of doubt that I know Christ and I am bound for heaven. I can also honestly say that, because I know and love God, that every day is like a delicious feast - and I am not even in heaven yet. The world cannot understand that my life is absolutely perfect and that I am perfectly happy. That is because I know Christ. Life's pain - emotional and physical - are swallowed up in my friendship with Christ. Moreover, after horrific abuse by my father, I have an indescribably great relationship with God, my Father.
If you go into eternity without solving the problem of pain, you will be in pain forever. Think of a billion, trillion years; that is not even a fraction of eternity! Jesus said, "Be careful how you hear!" Be careful how you hear. Be careful!

There was an “image” of Mary somehow on the glass of an office building in FL quite a while back, believers went batshit.
Edit: Just before Christmas, on December 17, 1996, a stain was discovered on the glass windows of the Seminole Finance Company in Clearwater, Florida. The stain, which was 60 feet tall and 20 feet wide, evoked the traditional shape of the Virgin Mary.
Religious devotees were certain that the image was a miracle, but glass experts weren’t so sure. Corrosion of the metallic coating on the glass - a common process in certain types of glass - was largely suspected to be at fault. There was no explanation for why the stain appeared when it did, though, or why it resembled the Virgin Mary.

And I spent the first 4 years of my schooling life in a religious school!! I also went to Sunday school every summer for who know how many years AND, in the early `70's, was in a church youth group for a few years!! Did he tell you it was unbearable to him? He couldn't have felt THAT badly about it or he would've stepped in LONG before now and DONE SOMETHING about it!! If I was god, my FIRST inclination would NOT have been, "Let's see, humans are evil, so, I'm going to kill my own son! THAT'LL teach them a lesson!!" I can guarantee you, it wouldn't even have been my TWELFTH inclination!!! If he lived a perfect live just to show us how it could be done, why are there STILL, to THIS DAY, thousands of uber-religious gang members readily willing to kill anyone that gets in their way?? Why does the POPE still allow and condone child torture, molestation and murder in the basement of vatican? Are they just more sacrificial lambs? When will you offer yours up to be the next sacrifice? I never bothered to read the bible and I've always been of the understanding that we should love each other and try to help each other! And that's how I live my life!! Really? He died on the cross for our sins? Well, THAT'S the part I don't get. It's just your talking point that you all echo every chance you get, but it doesn't MEAN ANYTHING!! It's just something you're brainwashed to tell everyone!! Jesus died for my sins?? What sins are we talking about? How could him dying 2000 years ago (when he actually never even existed in the first place!) have ANYTHING to do with MY supposed sins? WHO killed animals for their sins and how did that help rid them of sins or whatever the hell it's supposed to do? Oh! God knows all of this prior, hunh? Well, WHY doesn't he do SOMETHING about it, prior??? A bunch of kids were killed in a school a few weeks ago by a nut case with a gun!! If god REALLY knows these things prior, WHY wouldn't he have removed the psycho from the planet before anything happened to those kids??? Or, are they just another sacrifice for someone's sins?? There's ALL KINDS of nasty shit happening to innocent people, but I NEVER see your precious god stepping in to do ANYTHING about it!! That ALONE is proof enough to me that your god does NOT exist!!! Babe, if it takes the spilling of someone else's blood for me to enter his imaginary kingdom, I refuse to go!!! This video came out the year my VERY devout Christian mom died of cancer in a lot of pain. Even though she was one of the kindest people I ever met, do you know what I kept hearing from the people closest to us? "OMG, she allowed a Jahova's Witness into her home to read the bible! She's going to go to hell!" (she said she was sick and tired of the extremism of other believers in the family and just kinda wanted to chill.) and "If she doesn't wear this magic necklace when she dies then she's going to go to hell. Make sure she never takes it off."
Even though I've always been agnostic but dropped Christianity early in life, those statements infuriated me to my core. If someone who gave their entire life in the service of others, first as a nurse who saved lives and then as a foster parent who cared for and adopted sick kids like myself so we'd get a chance in life, the idea of her being tortured for eternity for something so small made me really angry at the Christian faith. If SHE could go to hell then we're all screwed. And the fact they could say those things literally days before she died tells me they don't know anything about how their religion works. No one knows what gets a person into heaven even though they supposedly have an entire manual on it. That's a HUGE problem and is rife with psychological abuse.

I have a rare, crippling, excruciatingly painful degenerative neurological disorder called CRPS (type II, full body). People often ask me what’s wrong. It makes sense to wonder why a woman my age would be on crutches permanently (I use a chair part time, as well). I’m only 31 and I look all of maybe 25. But when I tell them, the response is almost always, “I’ll pray for you.”
Don’t tell me that. I don’t give a rats ass about prayers. What I care about is the extreme lack of research funds for this disease. It was discovered during the American Civil War and we are just now having drug trials for a drug that might work for it. That drug wasn’t invented for this disease- it was invented to treat osteoporosis, a very common symptom of CRPS. In Italy, they noticed the 3 CRPS patients in the drug trials for this new IV infusion osteoporosis drug all experienced massive improvements in pain and functionality. It’s now being trialed in the US for CRPS under Orphan Disease laws.
If you really gave a rats ass about me, about anyone suffering with this crazy, horrible disease, you’d donate to research for it. In the US, the national charity is the RSDSA (www.rsdsa.org). Even $5 makes a big difference.

Adrian Brent the point is that most mainstream religious people won’t. Christians are more likely than JWs or Mormons, who are hardcore taught to distrust charities and only give to the church, but if you believe that a god will magically cure people, why donate money? I saw that happen a lot when I was religious, people would use prayer as equivalent to doing something actually helpful like donating food or money or time. And not time like mission trips, because half the time they’re proselytizing and it’s really disgusting to take advantage of people’s situations to convince them to believe something. Specially the way JWs and Mormons do it, where they only render aid to their own followers but proselytize to everyone else, basically training people that they will only help you if you’re a follower and will just leave you behind if you’re not. That’s straight up gang like.

18:49 My uncle was in a fatal car crash at age 21. They managed to resessitate him, but he remained in a coma for three months. My grandmother and mother refused to pull the plug, as they believed (devout Catholics) that God would save him. David came out of his coma three months after the accident with total amnesia and permeant brain damage. He has never recovered any of his memories of his life before the crash, and has gone through a lot of suffering since. He struggles to remember things, and still sometimes misremembered me being in 1st grade. He has become much more temperamental after his "miraculous" recovery, and for the past thirty years has been making a meager salary as a clerk at a JCPENNEY's.
He used to be an actual genius. No joke, by textbook definition. He had a whole career ahead of him. If he was in school, he would likely be in heavy special Ed care, and he struggles to get by as an adult because he simply lacks the capability to understand everything that's going on. He has also become a hardcore MAGA supporter, QANONer, and overall crazy conspiracy theorist. He genuinely believes the ancient aliens type shit.
My family thanks God for bringing him back from the dead, and they all think it's a miracle. I am the only one to point out that the man who came back is not the same person at all before the crash. My Uncle has been dead for 30+ years, and what's left is a confused man who sadly will be forced to live the rest of his life in a state of confusion and misery.
I have no fucking clue why my family not only believes that God did this, but they also think it's a GOOD, WONDERFUL, MIRACULOUS thing.
This is actually Monkey's Paw level stuff, "oh sure, you can have your son back, but he'll be forever permanently damaged and not at all the person you knew."

The goal post thing is so true. I had a friend at work who we expected to get a promotion, as a division head I was on the board of advisors, and the plan was to take the graphic design department out of the print services division, and make it a division of its own providing web design, packaging design, and graphics arts (all of which they had already successfully dabbled in. This would have made my friend a division head with a raise and bonus plan. He was very devout, and was praying for this. But the decision of the board was turned down by the owner, who decided instead to outsource all of that and shut down the department.
Work for graphic artists being hard to find he had to take two jobs and do some freelance commercial art to make about 60% of what he had been. But he was "blessed" because he was able to work a night shift at Walmart, and then work 4 am to 9 am loading trucks for UPS, who gave health benefits, and then he could be at home during the day to do his art, which freed his wife to go back to work, and he could watch the kids. God had his back.
Then he got testicular cancer - praise god for getting him the UPS job with the medical insurance! When he finally had to sell his house, praise god because he had a friend (me) who had no kids and a five bedroom house where his family could stay.
And when he got too sick (often) to watch the kids, praise god his mother in law lived nearby! When she died 9 months later, she was in a better place, and god was praised because she had left here tiny home to them, so they could move into their own place.
God was praised when his cancer went into remission after 2 years. And then, when I happened to find that a friend of mine needed to hire a graphic artist for his web business, and I got him the job (which paid far less than he had made but was 8 to 5 with benefits) god was again praised for knowing that this was the job for his because it was less stressful and gave him more time with the family than he would have had if he had gotten the promotion.
In the end, he was awed to see how god had made this amazing plan unfold for him. Never mind the loss of his home and all his savings, and his mother in law, and his illness.

The thing they fail to realize about that phrase is that it comes not from the Bible, but from Benjamin Franklin, who was a deist, and who was pointing out that the only time "God" does anything is when the individual actually does it.

My extremely religious Christian friends (who are aware that I don't believe in the Bible) have always listened to my horrendous physical problems which have no known cure that led to having deep emotional and financial problems and they have told me for YEARS now every time they see me: that God has a plan for me, that he loves me, that everything happens in God's time, and they will pray for me.
I finally snapped at one of them and said, "I wish he'd fucking get on with this plan of his then, so I don't have to keep suffering while he apparently does NOTHING to help me!" I said to her, "Don't you think if your prayers were going to work, they would have done so by now?" "Why does this God need you and everyone else around me to incessantly beg him to help me?"
I instantly felt regret because I knew these things were being said to me with good intentions, but at the same time I felt justified since I had bottled that up for a long time and knew the things she was saying were to comfort her... not me. I always felt like I was the one there to comfort her about my situation when I was the one that was supposed to be getting the comfort. If she wanted to pray for me for the millionth time, she didn't have to burden me with it. If they incessantly bring up their religious beliefs, I'm supposed to be appreciative and let them say it, even if what they say hurts me instead of helps me. If I ask them not to say it since they know I don't believe what they do, I am being a jerk to their feelings.
When I want to comfort someone, I tell them I am sorry for their loss or sorry they are experiencing pain or problems. I assess whether there is anything physically, emotionally, or financially I can do immediately for them to lighten their load and I do it ASAP. I ask them if there is anything else I can do. I tell them to let me know if they think of something later and assure them I am not just offering plattitudes and that I REALLY WANT to help, if I can. If there is nothing else I can do, I ask if I can give them a hug or sit and hold their hand. I give them time to greave if they sèem to need it, or try take their mind off it temporarily if it seems like it would help them. If I can think of something funny to say that may help them, I say it before I leave. I try to just let them know I care.

*If I ask them not to say it since they know I don't believe what they do, I am being a jerk to their feelings.*
No, you're not. While asking them not to keep repeating those religious platitudes may make them feel embarrassed or even angry, doing so doesn't make you a jerk. If they have any genuine respect for you they will (perhaps eventually) realize that all of you are better off for them having a true understanding of how you feel and what you're going through. And if they fault you or ignore you when you do nothing more than tell them how their actions make you feel, then they're not actually your friends but are only using you to make themselves feel good about doing their Godly duty.
And if they keep doing that while not doing anything to help you physically or financially (I don't know if they do or not), then they are most definitely not your friends, nor even good Christians. In such a case I would tell them to go read Jesus's parable of the Good Samaritan (about a man helping someone in physical need despite differences in belief and culture) every day for two weeks before they show up to you again. Good luck to you.

Great talk. and I could sum it up by saying two things:
    1. Prayer does have a tangible effect on people, similarly to meditation, but there is nothing supernatural behind it.
    2. Give credit where credit is due (and don't be a jerk about it)

Unlike meditation which is the act of concentrating upon one's inner power, prayer is an act of pure surrender of whatever power you have left into the hands of an imaginary friend (or sky daddy as xians like to refer to), and therefore prayer cannot, under any circumstance, have similar effects to meditation. And if you ever claim to receive answers to your prayers, then who's the jerk?

I agree completely. Athletes pull that nonsense all the time. They earned everything they have. I understand crediting the parents and coaches and all that because they are real and actually had an influence, but thanking god for your achievements is such a cop out, sometimes people just do it to be PC. It's sickening.

Nacirema It's not about Religion. It's all about a Relationship with Jesus Christ. Satan is evil. God created Hell for Satan and his demons. Satan hates everybody and wants to take everyone to Hell and torment them forever. Satan gives people who are non believers of Jesus cancer and all other diseses. Satan hates you and wants to take you to Hell and torment you forever. God gives life and more abundantly.

I have gone to church since I was probably four years old, became a Christian at around age thirty. Now, after five years of living in Christianity I am very close to becoming an atheist. These have been the most miserable years of my life and I had many days where I wished I was dead because of the way people treated me and all the confusion Christianity has brought to my life. I have always been good and giving to people and lived right, but all I have gotten in return is disappointment from working hard, along with being taken advantage or rejected by people who were the closest to me at certain times of my life. I have many talents, but I am overlooked and forgotten about because I live a life of humility and don't have connections or prestige. This constant pattern of rejection in my life has damaged me and destroyed my self confidence and self esteem. The important things I prayed for and had strong faith in never panned out. I am so tired of the "loopholes" to defend God when nothing makes sense or injustices take place. I am to the point where I believe that sin is nothing more than us acting on our own selfish human nature and survival instincts. I am also intrigued by the fact that many other religious people that aren't Christian are getting comfort and peace of mind from what they believe in. I have felt more comfort lately in knowing that things are what they are, I don't have to play this guessing game of why or what each uncomfortable event in life is designed for or if I am passing a test to learn some spiritual lesson. Also it bothers me that the church is now a place of employment and run like a corrupt government business instead of a place to serve. I guess a big reason I feel this way and see things form a neutral perspective is because I am not a sentimental person, I don't feel the need to place a "God Stamp" on every detail of my life so it will have some sort of extra meaning to me.

Same. Many, many years ago, I went to a Vineyard megachurch. Full of hypocrites, too. I never felt so alone in my entire life. I even became suicidal. I was much, MUCH happier when I left. Also, the further I get from Christianity, the BETTER my life becomes. And NO, I'm NOT an immoral heathen.

The section at 34:15 hit home with me--I've often compared my Mom's devotion to her god to Stockholm syndrome. Because she doesn't even believe that she is one of his chosen people, yet she still worships him because she thinks it's the right way to live. She also told me (and I'm a grown woman nearing 50 years old have lived my life as a non-believer all this time just fine) that she'd have been a more successful parent if I believed in her God. In other words, if she'd been able to brainwash me ("brainwash" being my word of course). I know that being insulted is just my ego, and that the real problem is her seriously sick thinking, but it still hurts me and makes me feel more alone in the world that my own mother is a bit sick in her thinking.
