the short story was much better than the movie and the ending is different with him being incorporated into the colony on a throne and held captive by them as they took over feeding him as he slowly morphed into one of them .... If you can find a copy of the story I highly recommend its reading :)
see, what made this ep stand out was the brilliant acting, as well as the concept.. but the acting really sold this story.. ah.. i miss old films n tv shows like this with real down to earth type portrayals of characters etc.. if that makes any sense. Cya's
So someone read really good novella and said "Hey this book would make a great show! it wouldn't require much for special effects and it has a great story. but instead of making it like the book, lets just rip off a few key parts from the book. take a giant dump on it, then make it into a show. Forget all the things that made the book so great, lets just make a half assed rip off." ... ... ... I hope someday someone comes along and makes a real film of the SandKings.
+TemplarNight 82 I first read this in Omni Magazine back in the late 70's or early 80's. The story is on Mars and the guy is an eccentric who play war games with them for entertainment of his friends. He gets drunk and destroys the cage and the took up residence at different areas of his compound and basement. The Book is much better than this movie. I was very disappointed when I saw it on TV a few years back. I too hope for a remake.
Spoilers below. I'm glad Simon redeemed himself in the end. 'Not that it will save the world from his lack of protocol and safety measures... He tried, though. Now... if only there would be a company that would do an adaptation that follows the novel practically scene by scene!!!
I mean, the story is waaaaaaay better. The protagonist in the story is an absolute psychopath however, but I would much rather have had the full scifi experience than some toned down Goosebumps level thriller like this.
Within the story why: maybe it was an effect of the sandking microorganism poison. Oustide the story why: Maybe the creators wanted to symbolize some sort of transformation for Simon. Mechanistically why: They probably used special contacts to make his eyes look like that.
@TheThroney The acting was excellent but the writing was a bit iffy at times. Like you said though, I really miss the quality shows that depended on talented acting and original story lines. I wouldn't lose hope though; I don't think we have seen the last of The Outer Limits; I am hopeful new shows inspired by it will surface in the future. I am looking forward to owning this series on DVD to go with my original set.
The Sand Kings (mankind) left the confines of their "natural habitat" and paid the price for their curiosity and lust for supremacy when their god took vengeance upon them with armageddon.
OK, good adaptation. The original story was so different that this wasn't as annoying as I thought it would be. Who wrote the original? CJ Cherryh (sp?) comes to mind. If you liked this, you should read The Vang by Christopher Rowley.
Read the original novelette (1979j. It’s far creepier, has a nasty rwist at the end and contains much much more about the ecology of the sandkings. It is highly likely that many extraterrestrial civilisations will be of arthropodic (insect) origin. The novelette (not this film) telos us much how they might emerge.
Your son (or husband or father whatever the case my be) is blowing himself up and the house with him, and you're just sitting there in the car watching on as if he only tripped over a branch????? Ummm ok some unrealistic acting there....
Interestingly, the Sand Kings were actually awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their ability to overcome apartheid and civil strife within their own regime.
Loved this one!!! But that woman sucked through the whole thing!! She either over did it or like the end under did it!!!! Lol.... Thanks zenjim007 for help'n me find it. and thanks granjenal15 for providing it!!
I love how the sandkings are extremely fast...except for right at the end when dramatic suspense means they take 2 minutes to go 10 feet.

first!
i loved this episode.
and again, thanks for the upload.
this was much better than some of the "horror" movies out today.
Had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
Thanks for posting this episode.
Thanks, I forgot about him. I loved Dreamspiders by him as well. I think these were in Azamov's Sci Fi magazine.
I never noticed it when I watched them as a child but it's very noticeable now.
George R. R. Martin wrote the original novella in 1979.
awesome!! loved watchin that all again thanks for posting :)
Idea for a new movie. Connect this to the movie Tremors. The creatures in this movie is a pupa like stage of the creatures in Tremors.

Well, the god died, and the Sandkings did just fine without him. ...
Anyone know what the music during the credits is called?
Trolls.... I hate trolls...

A great story....but the ending...kind of bugged me. He he.
@Freemon34 theres even more future for them in the 6th season episode "Final Appeal"
at the end, why was his eyes looked like that when the house was about to blow up?
Epic smudged CGI at 4:15 :P

beware the children of the forest.
posthumously
why wasnt this 30 min
Tedious and ponderous.
That's how you ruin a great novella.
So, did he get the Nobel Prize or not?
GET READY FOR ARMAGEDDON

Way different than the book by george r. r. king
George R R Martin
@@garrett5974 Man it's been 8 years what a time capsule. Thanks for the correction! Must've gotten confused w king and martin.
Yeaaah buddy, I was wondering if you'd see this. Welcome back to SANDKINGS.
because he was bitten earlier

Wack compared to the Novella..
i hate the anti-science pro-god crap in almost every outer limits episode. its annoying and reeks of ignorance.
