My parent's oldest friends were Phil Gips (deceased) and Barbara Gips. Phil's graphic design company called Gips/Balkind designed the movie poster for ALIEN and his wife, Barbara, wrote the line, "In Space No One Can Her You Scream" (they also designed graphics for SUPERMAN and ROSEMARY'S BABY among others).

I was flabbergasted when I watched this movie as a 15 year old guy on New year's eve of 1979 with my dad.
I watched this movie 3 more times since then and I'm constantly marvelled.
This movie is an absolute masterpiece of cinematography.
Just to think that this movie was made in the late 70s without any CGI, computer effects, etc is MINDBLOWING.
You watch it in 2020 and you're still blown away. Only the touchscreen technology would be missing today. The rest is still very advanced even 41 years later. Unbelievable!
And 41 years later I'm stunned again after watching your interesting facts about the making of Alien.
    Nice job man

I agree 100%. I was 11 and saw Alien in one of the long gone movie palaces, with the huge screens and balcony. Very memorable experience, with the sound and screen, in a cavernous theater. I was terrified, but my dad was the reason why I’m a huge sci-fi and horror fan.
Other great experiences at the theater, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Star Wars, Superman The Movie, Close Encounters, Jaws, Jaws 2, Robocop, Predator, Fright Night, The Blob (1988), man so many to list.

Perfect organism. That scene was both gross to watch yet pivotal to the story to understand why "the company" wanted the alien and the "crew expendable". It forces you to watch something so horrific just to understand its purpose. That was a running theme within the sequels right into Prometheus and Covenant, although I think Scott lost some of his mojo and practicality when given a bigger budget.

Alien was one of the few movies that didn't get infected by the familiar "Hollywood style" script writing. It was a realistic movie with some of the best acting I have ever seen. The egg scene in this movie looked alive and real, something they were never able to duplicate the in any of the other sequels.

I just picked this game up, but I couldn't play long because I was getting motion sickness. I don't get it for every fp game, but I seem to get it in the ones where most of the time is spent wandering. I'll have to play it in short bursts.

I consider Alien Isolation to be the greatest in the history of computer games.
[and I've played most of the best]
It honestly feels like you're in Alien .. it's terrifying!
The opening sequence where Sevastapol is introduced to the crew of the Torrens, is one of my favourite openings to any sci-fi or horror movie or game.
And the creature - often presented out in the open with bright lighting - is lethal and terrifying. As it should be.

    • @swahiliranger1022
      @swahiliranger1022 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Did it truly make you appreciate how canonically stupid the idea of Ripley's daughter going into space to save her on the exact same modeled ship decades later? Or did you like it cause "ma Alien nostalgia?"
Alien- Isolation is a good game, but it is no way shape or form a good plot or something we haven't seen a million times over.

  • @locke2517
    @locke2517 ปีที่แล้ว +4

A couple years ago I watched a special 4k remaster of the film in theatres. Geiger's matte paintings in the background are so full of detail that you just dont see on television. Theres so much detail on the big screen and nearly all of it holds up. Not a single computer was used to make this movie but 97 percent of this movie looks better than modern cgi and special effects. When possible, practical effects is the way to go.
I wish I could go back to 1979 and experience what this movie was like unspoiled in the theatre. My dad saw it in theatres and he would tell me, "you gotta understand, NOTHING like this movie existed at the time. People were utterly terrified by this movie "

I liked the grounding in regular people rather than starship commanders and elite troops. That made a huge difference. Also, the relatable decisions of characters, unlike Prometheus, where scientists behaved more like children than like actual scientists.

Omg Covenant though , I love the movie, but watching it after covid left me with such a different impression. The total lack of regard for infectious disease or even breathable atmosphere at the beginning was so, damn unrealistic. They may have had a throwaway line about atmosphere, but even still there is no excuse for the lack of precautions.

The effect of the blood dissolving through the floor was done by having the floor made of styrofoam (and painted to look like the ships flooring) and then pouring/spilling yellow tinted acetone (the Alien's blood) on to it, which will dissolve upon contact.

Changing the framerate doesn't affect the realism of scaled perspective. That was just to simulate low gravity by slower movement.

Alien is also my favorite scifi movie of all time. I had to wait until 1983 to enjoy it on a full theater screen and I had no idea what I was in for. I saw at the Greenville cinema in Dallas. One of those old, grand, and gilded movie palaces that showcased revivals. The contrast of this movie and the theater made it seem even more frightening and surreal. I went out the next day and purchased the VHS to add to my small collection of films. I watched it several times and felt the same way as I did the first time, however, I was able to put it in slow motion to catch any mistakes or visible tricks... I found none.
I also was pretty sure that oysters were used for the underside of the face hugger. Thank for confirming the fact. And thank you for this great video.

An *EXCELLENT* video in every respect! Thank you so much.. The film truly is a cinematic masterpiece and it's artistic and cultural influences are simply incalcuble!
I was sent to see 'Alien' the second day it was out, as I was a toy designer and sci fi toys were beginning to rage. Especially after ALL the toy manufactorers foolishly turned down the licensing for 'Star Wars'. All that is except 'Kenner', who had the vision to eat up virtually all the important categories: action figures, play sets, etc.
I previously tried to talk my company into getting 'Star Wars' toy licensing, as the 20th Century license promo looked gorgeous and _totally_ unique.
But I was firmy told, " Science Fictioni is a dead toy category and you cant give it away." Yeah....right!

I'm from Italy and i watched the movie in 1979 in a small village my family and I were used to go for summer holidays. I was just ten years old and I was attracted by the poster of the film and by the (Italian)tagline: "Il film shock dell'anno".
Me and a little friend of mine were always hanging around together all the time and we didn't have any money, but I knew for some time that the theatre had an emergency exit ajar(maybe faulty). So we decided to enter the theatre from there, and we did it.
    And it was really shocking!
Particularly for two ten years old kids like us.
I remember that I couldn't stay alone at home or in a room for days... Maybe weeks. I was terrified!
That's how I approached what immediately became one of my favourites movies ever.

Wonderful analysis! I always thought there was something mysteriously frightening about just the name "Nostromo" itself.

I never realized how incredible this movie was until doing acid one day than once fully grounded and back to reality was driven to a friends house where we watched it perfect ending to the day. I was stunned once I saw how much more artistic it was than I ever knew about

Excellent coverage of the mechanics of good film making. Thanks!
I was lucky. I only learned of the film on the day it opened in our local small town theater. All I could find out was that it was "science fiction". I am not necessarily a horror fan but love my sci-fi. However.... this film scared the water out of me. I screamed out loud in the theater when the chest burster did his thing. Did not do that again for 30 years during my first viewing of 28 Days Later. Anyways, Starlog magazine had a "full frontal" view of the alien on the cover the following month. THAT gave me "wake up screaming in the night" nightmares for weeks afterward. Fortunately, I like my nightmares. Lucky me.

Simon Deering (God bless) did some great modelmaking on this movie, for example the crashed spaceship at the beginning.

Done well, practical effects are great. Even today as CGI dominates so many big films. Christopher Nolan's one of the few big directors that prefers practical effects over CGI even with Oppenheimer. But even when he uses CGI he hides it well within the frame. That's why his movies always feel so different to other big budget films. His dedication to using practical effects always pays off because you hardly notice it as you're following the story and that's the trick.

People have been trying unsuccessfully to copy the various winning aspects of this movie since its release but nothing comes remotely close, what a masterpiece and Sigourney W is just fantastic in the leading role in this and all the follow up movies, I cant imagine anyone else in the Ripley role

I love this movie. Somehow I watched it and actually paid attention to it, without even being scared, as a child. I have no idea how or even why I would’ve picked it from the video rental place. Rental places were a really cool thing back then, there isn’t anything comparable now. Getting old is ass.
4:50 I’ve always loved the skull inside the dome detail of the alien. I feel like they have done away with it now, or it’s just not highlighted at all. Either way, bring it back into focus, it’s so cool and eerie. It really makes it seem scary, but also like some part of a human went into it’s making, just like the actual creature itself.

No more CGI unless it is for the right reason. Build stuff again, give these creative guys and gals - real jobs. I love computers but it is used for the wrong reasons.

A film made in 1979 looks more realistic than films today with their cartoonish CGI effects.

My number one favorite horror film of all time. Number two is Night of the Living Dead. In each one of those movies you can see everyone involved went above and beyond to achieve the best possible product. To create fantasy on the screen you sometimes have to figure out how to do the impossible. And they did it.

I just watched this again, and from what I could tell, virtually ALL the effects in Alien were 100% captured in-camera. The only two exceptions were two bluescreen shots, at the start of movie, when Ripley looks out into space, and at the very end, when they show her looking out the window, as the Nostromo blows up.
