    I think collecting "convenience" mixes in acrylics is essential. When you mix your own, by the time you get the right color, it starts to dry out before you can use all of it - especially in big pieces painted over time. These beautiful tube colors save money because you're not wasting paint. Anyway, that's my rationale! 😽

    • @rhi963
      @rhi963 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is the EXACT reason I dont quite enjoy acrylic because I mix almost every color I use for about 10 minutes each 😂

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree with this. Thank you for sharing your perspective on it! I just like to grab a certain colour sometimes; the ease of doing that when I'm in the middle of a painting is important especially in acrylics, and I hate wasting paint!

      Have you tried a stay wet palette? I've only just discovered this and oh my it is a life changer!! my golden heavy body stays wet for literally a 5 hour painting session :) you can buy these or just make one with kitchen roll and parchment paper (I made it myself). Seriously changed my mind on acrylics completely!

      @@rhi963 You should try a stay wet palette they keep your acrylics workable for longer (they work for gouache too),you can but ready made ones but you can make your own stay wet palette too.

      Hi Alyona! 🖤 I do show a quick shot of all the Golden paints I currently have on my art cart, but I've been meaning to film a more in-depth video about them. I also have lots of their colours in my favourites list on Jackson's just waiting for some of them to come back into stock, so I can definitely talk about them in more detail, showing how I use them in my artwork and swatch them etc! They have some delicious colours! x

    Thank you for my lovely pen! It’s an excellent addition to my burgeoning pen palette!
    I also love the selection of paints that you swatch here. The names alone are fun to say, and I don’t think I’ll ever tire of hearing you say “Schmincke Horadam Super Granulating!”
    I was trying to pick a favourite of these paints, but soon realised that I couldn’t (is it just me, or does anyone else feel bad for the other colours if you try and pick a favourite?) Although the ones with a subtle iridescence and interesting granulation do have a little something extra, I rather like that added element of the unpredictable that one can get with these. I look forward to seeing them appearing in your future paintings.
    Thank you for another enjoyable film! xxxx

    Beautiful choices. I love the new Schmincke colours but they are really expensive. I did an experiment and mixed them myself with the pigments they mention and it was pretty good! But, I agree with you, it’s easier when it’s all mixed for you. Still, I’ll wait before I invest. Love Irit. She has good ideas. Looking forward to your paintings.

      I agree, they are quite expensive! I managed to get this one on a bit of a deal (they had a watercolour sale with a few pounds off), so that was lucky! I really enjoy Irit's channel - even though her style of art is very different to mine, I love her way of looking at colours / colour mixing. :)

    Another great haul and swatching videos,It's really nice to see how you are expanding your colour palette and how you are selecting colours to do this,but also to hear your thoughts and raesons for choosing certain colours. I have the Jenkin's Green in my acrylic stash and in a watercolour too, it's fantastic rich colour that you wil definitly love,it's great for mixing darker tints and making tinted blacks. I have used the Fabriano Artistico paper in 300Lb for years, it's a great workhorse of a paper that I use for acrylic, watercolour and it's really good for gouache and mixed media too,it will be perfct for the Holbien acryla gouache that you like to use. The Pitt artist's pens are such a great brush pen highly pigmented and consistant in the lines and marks you can make with them,again these have been a staple of mine for years. Sample paper packs are great for painting miniatures or small studies and I often turn paintings I make on them into cards to send to friends.
    Jacksons are a great supplier to buy from and they do package their orders so well,and their own brand of Procryl brushes are the ones I use for working with gouache,as they are great for this medium and it's obvious they are made from qaulity materials.
    Rembrandt are actually a really great range of watercolours I have a few colours in my stash and also some acrylics in this range too,I find their earth tones in their watercolours a particularly good and layer really well. Looking forward to seeing how you use al these new paints in the future especially the golden acrylics. As well as having swatch sheets on my studio walls (and in sketchbooks) I also have companies paint charts on my walls too I find having them around me is inspiring as well. It's good to have a mix of mixing colours and also 'convienience' colours too,I have both in all the mediums I use,it's not always easy to mix a particular colour the same each time,so a ready made one can give you that, especially if you are working in a series of paintings,but I also like to mix with this type of colour too.I love that these haul and swatch videos are like us getting another little peek behind the scenes of your work and they are realy insightful and realy inspiring and sometimes make us want to go shopping too! The swatch sheet you painted,all nine colours actually look reaaly good and work well together,a possible colour palette maybe....
    P.s Natasha it's me Matt French,I just changed my profile name on youtube for practical reasons so it's the same as my web site and Blg and Pintrest page/board.

      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooh, I didn't know you could get a Jenkin's Green watercolour - do you mind sharing which brand it is, please? :) It's great to hear that you've used and love the paper I've chosen! I haven't used it yet as it only arrived the other day, but it looks lovely and is SO thick, which is really what I need, especially for larger paintings. I love how knowledgable you are about so many different types of art materials, Matt - thank you for sharing that knowledge and experience with all of us here. 💖 And you're so right about it being quite difficult to always mix your own colours with acrylic; it takes a fair amount of time to get the correct colour each time, and you always have to factor in the fast drying time of acrylics and the fact that you don't have long to work with them because of this etc.

And I didn't even know about the 'samples' section on the Jackson's website until recently! They have so many different paper samples and it's a great way of trying new papers very cheaply. Wow, that dusk pink went on my wishlist instantly.
    When I first used the super granulating Schmincke colours I was a little underwhelmed as they don't tend to do a lot left to themselves as Daniel Smith watercolours do. But if you move them around a bit, add a bit of water, drag them here and shove them there, the colourseparation's really interesting. Considering your interest in pale blueish greens, you might want to give the glacier green a try, it's one of my favourites.

Another way I use it is to mix it with another color and when the wash dries the cobalt teal separates out a bit because of the granulation and it creates a very beautiful pattern. Hello Natasha hope you and Dominic are both well. the Jenkin's Green in watercolour is also made by Golden it's in their QoR watercolour range. I use a stay wet palette for my acrylics, but discovered it's easy to actually make your own,using a deep baking tray, paper towel,greaseproof paper and thin sponge or foam. I love the fact that in the community around your channel we all talk to each-other in the comments and share our knowledge and experiece. I have learned a lot from you videos and from others in the comments,it's like in a small way we are all playing a part in each-other's creative journeys and that's really vital in the current climate we are living in.I think Jenkin's Green as a colour is exclusive to Golden,I think many paint companies own colours of paints in their ranges or have ones created esecially for them.I keep a colour mixing book,like a little sketchbook and I write down how I've mixed colours,paint ratios etc,Brands used etc,and swatch them next to the notes,an artist friend told me about the idea a few years ago now and I've kept the mixing notebook ever since.I can't always get the exact mixes each time but I come very close,of course pigments used in paints change sometimes.But it's a useful reference book,especially if I'm working on a series of paintings and have the same colours in them.
    You will love the Fabriano paper when you use it,it is my prefered paper because it is so versatile.Thank you for all the knowledge and insights you share with as in your briliant videos.
    P.s there is a video here on TH-cam posted by Iris Borgers called "David Hockney shows his sketchbook" that I think you wil love.

      We are, thanks Matt! How are you? I hope you're doing well. :) I've searched and searched for the QoR watercolour in Jenkin's Green, but Jackson's don't have it and I could only find it in acrylic form when I Googled it. I would absolutely love watercolour Jenkins Green (I wonder if I can make it if I can't find it?!). I've started keeping a mixing book, like you! It all started when I mixed some colours I loved for my last collection of paintings and I didn't want to forget how I'd mixed them. I used the Jenkin's Green acrylic with Payne's Grey and Titanium white yesterday and it made a beautiful soft green. I'll definitely be checking out that Hockney video - thanks! Have a lovely Sunday. :)

      @@NatashaNewtonArt I got my tubes of Jenkin's Green watercolour while ago as a gift from friends in America,in a care package. I wonder if it might be worth contacting Golden directly and asking them about it.Or as you say making it yourself,if you could find out the igment information for the colour,but do think about contacting Golden,I find companies are willing to answer any questions you have for them especially if they know you use their products.I make progress in my recovery every day. Hope you and Dominic have a lovely sunday too.

    The fuchsite genuine I found difficult to rewet in the pan, I wonder if it was an old tube. I love Daniel Smith colours. I can recommend the lavender which is a lovely fresh colour. I have Lamp Black which is quite intense, interesting texture when dry. I could be wrong but I think it contains soot.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dot card I had of the Fuchsite (which was dry paint, obviously!) rewet easily, so maybe it did have something to do with the age of your tube? I'll have to check out the Lavender as that sounds lovely - thanks for the recommendation! I also have the Lamp Black in my palette and I love it. I think you're right about it containing soot!

    ZOISITE geological info is amazing...Tanzanite is in the gem family with shades from blue to purple as is Thulite a beautiful pink. In the world of gem stones Tanzanite is highly prized....Look up Tanzanite and gaze in delight. My personal favorite is Bondi Blue. Copying color and getting it right is a fascinating pursuit.

    I've been doing art hauls lately too but all on Fabriano 100% cotton cold press pads to make my own vintage cover sketchbooks. Omg I've been having so much fun with Kettle stitch binding. And now I have I have own high quality sketchbooks with interesting covers. I've not allowed myself to buy watercolour paints lately as I just want to Learn go use what I have first. And cull out any art supplies that no longer floats my boat..im not an artist by career so I shouldn't own as much as I do lol that's my guilt anyway.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a massive cull of art supplies both last year and this year, where I went through everything and sorted out what I no longer need or want and mostly gave it away (or sold a couple of batches of art supplies for much less than I'd originally paid). It felt good to only be left with the supplies I will use and that inspire me! And since then I've been allowing myself to gradually invest in higher quality, artist grade materials that I will use and treasure. Your sketchbooks sound really lovely! :)

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I know from my own experience of sending orders to the US that the prices have gone up so much in the past year. It's because there are fewer planes in operation at the moment during Covid times (at least I think that's what I read somewhere!).

    I’m on a self-imposed “no buy” this year and I’ve instead decided to “shop my stash”, only creating art with what I already have in the way of art supplies. Four months into the year and I’m still going strong, but these haul videos are helping scratch that itch!
    Have you tried the British Earth Natural Pigments Watercolour Set from Choosing Keeping? They are GORGEOUS (especially for landscapes), have a lot of texture, and a few of the colors actually show up and look stunning on black paper.

      It's a great idea to do that sometimes! I've gone through phases like that too; it's a good way of making the most of the materials you already have and making sure you actually use them! I haven't tried those watercolours from Choosing Keeping but I do know that exact ones you mean as I loved the look of them. ;) I'm currently on a CK ban though as I've spent quite a lot there over the past few months! I'm allowing myself to purchase art supplies from Jackson's because I can use my affiliate credit and reward points (and if I need to put a bit of money towards the orders, it only tends to be a few pounds after those are taken off!).
