Very nice ! I have been buying handmade watercolours for some years now and Katie’s (KWARTS watercolour) has the most beautiful ones, very high quality. I have been collecting hand made watercolours from India, Germany, Italy, Scotland, UK, Ukraine, and many from USA (Vermont, Oregon, California, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Hawaï, Washington D.C, Vermont...). They are my favorites !
Thanks so much for opening my eyes to the handmade watercolours available in the UK. Since I've bought from most of the shops and found some too on my handmade watercolour journey. Found a handmade watercolour maker called novae co on Etsy some really unusual colours like rock pool a light greeny grey turquoise and cupcake a muted lavender grey lilac. Always so informative and enjoyable. So tempting! Do the sellers provide pigment information with their watercolours? Looking forward to seeing you swatch out those other paints.
Thank you! Most sellers do provide pigment and lightfast information. I tried the Good Honey paints for the first time today and they are beautiful - incredibly creamy and so pigmented. Video coming soon!
Thanks for sharing this Natasha. I think it would be very beneficial for both sellers and buyers to have the option of buying dot samples at affordable prices. Handmade watercolours can be more expensive than Daniel Smith or Schmincke and sometimes they are not what we expect because the pictures of the swatches are not the best or colours even change depending on our devices just to give an example.
I totally agree! The dot samples I have seen for sale have been fairly expensive - it should be an affordable way to try them out and would probably result in more sales in the long run!
So happy to see this video, such a stunning selection of colours. You really do have a real gift for selecting your colours to create the palettes. Some of the colour names are just delightful like 'Hippo Skin Purple' makes me think of the dancing hippos in the disney animation Fantasia. I loved the 'Tiffany' colour and the metallics am sure will look amazing in your nightscapes palette and in the paints created with it.The swatch book also looks amazing and is a great reference you can come back too. Hello, thank you for the Video, from your oppinion, whats the biggest difference from big brand wc like Dainiel Smith, Senelier , Schmincke, Qor etc with hand made artist? Are the quality are better? Im interested is some of them on etsy, but its so hard to find the reviews of them, and some of the price tag for a halfpan are to high for my wallet (98$ for 6 halfpan😳)
Thanks for watching! I would say that the handmade paints feel different - they seem to take a little longer to rewet sometimes (although the same could be said for certain pigments from the larger brands) and the texture varies more than it would do with the mainstream paints. But they feel so special when you're using them! They smell amazing (due to the clove oil used in them), and the colours seem unique and, to me, just so beautiful. I also love supporting small businesses! $98 for 6 half pans does seem expensive - I haven't seen any that cost that much! But you do usually pay a little bit more for handmade paints; I guess because of the labour-intensive process of making them.
@@NatashaNewtonArt thank you so much for replying^^, the one that are 98$ said have natural mineral and gems on it so probably its that expensive..yes, Im interested in the unique colors they have as well ^^ its hard to find the same color in big brand wc.
@@archietheredcat Ah, I see! yes, that explains it. I think it's nice to have a combination of big brand and handmade watercolours. It will be interesting to see how well these mix with my Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton, Schmincke etc. :)

Wow you have some jewels there! The neon pink looks amazing, it’s a shame it’s not lightfast otherwise I’d be putting that on my shopping list. It’s difficult to get lightfast pinks in whatever medium isn’t it? I hope you’ll make a video of you using these in a painting, they’re so beautiful.x
I know! I love neon pink but neon colours are never lightfast - they're pretty much the most fugitive of all paints. I've tried to be very careful with the other pinks I've ordered recently and will only buy them if they're rated excellent or very good for lightfastness (so many aren't!). Definitely more watercolour videos to come - I can't wait to share how I'll be using these in my work! Thanks Jess. 🧡 xx
Handmade watercolors really do open up a whole new side of watercolors 🌈. I am wondering though, when you buy handmade watercolors, do you use them in your professional art as well? I don't know much about them but how would you go about finding information on their pigments and lightfastedness? (like the pink and iron colors you showed). On another note, I don't know how you resist the urge to open and swatch all of them the minute you get them lol
On the Etsy shops that the handmade watercolour sellers have, most of them do have information about the pigments and binders they use in their paints and lightfast information as well, and when you order from them they also send this information with the paints too, they also all have contact details so you can ask any questions you may have about their paints. I found when I asked questions via their email or contact platform the sellers/makers were happy to answer them. Most of the handmade colours would be classed as artist's quality, and some may not be but sellers have all this information on their Etsy shops.
@@avirtualcanvas7584 oh wow. Thank you for your response!! Since I’m just a beginner, I’ve been keeping away from handmade paints since they feel special and expensive and probably wasted on me LOL 😂 but I’m still tempted
@@MayMay00 Find a shop on Etsty from a maker you are drawn too and order a small set or maybe order the three primaries and see how you get on with them. This way you can improve your colour mixing and try out the handmade paints. These paints do cost a liitle more, but it's because of the pigments used in them and binders plus the makers time too.But you know you will be getting a good qaulity paint made with a genuine love for the craft by the maker/seller.
I see that Matt has answered your comments, Selja! Thanks Matt! :) I think it's great advice to start with a small primary colour set to try them out and then add more if you like using them. The handmade paints I've tried so far have varied quite a lot in consistency, so starting with a few and then adding to them is the way to go, I think.

Thank you ☺️☺️
I'm sorry to say that I actually had problems with five of my Nectar watercolours. I LOVE the colours, but the formulation meant that they dried powdery and could actually be smudged with my finger (a bit like dry pastels). I was so disappointed. The best handmade watercolours I've used to date are by Arkaar Creation, Good Honey, and A Gallo. :) x
@@NatashaNewtonArt thank you! You’ve been so helpful ☺️ I’ve been eyeing nectar watercolors but glad I waited - it’s a shame because their colors are gorgeous! I’m saving up for a set from Agallo I can’t wait especially after seeing your videos ❤️
All paints will have a shelf life to some extent, but watercolours seem to last a long time in my experience, and I can't see why handmade watercolours wouldn't be the same if looked after well. Just always be sure to leave your palette open for a little while so that the paints can dry fully after you use them! This way you won't have a problem with mould and they should last longer.
@@NatashaNewtonArt ohh thank you for that new info, i didnt know that watercolors can mold if not dried properly after using, good thing I leave it overnight when i am done cause i'm lazy to clean up, thank u!
@Michele Archer-the inclusion of animal products or byproducts. Ox gall & honey are frequently added to watercolors. Ivory black is made from charred animal bones. I'm just an aging old hippie. I fault no one for their choices.
@@sarroumarbeu6810 You're right about the binders. But ivory black is made from charred animal bones. Years ago it was elephant tusks hence the name. It is just a personal choice and I respect everyone's choices.
Yes, a lot of them contain honey which would make them non-vegan. I think most (if not all) of the ones I've seen contain honey actually! I wonder what they could use as an alternative?
I've never had the awesome experience of trying out hand made water colours although I would LOVE to, they are way out of my budget. I've got to stop watching videos on them im 66 and can't stand the excitement lol
I hadn't until this month! I saved up to buy them and I'm so glad I did. Maybe you could start with just a Primary set of three colours to see if you like them, and go from there? Then you could add to your collection occasionally whenever you can afford it? :)

@@avirtualcanvas7584 All good points. Yeah maybe I'll check out and start with a small set and see how that goes. 😊
(Commenting from my main TH-cam account but it's Alyce from beyond indigo!) Thank you so so much Natasha! Loved this video and I've now got a long list of other watercolour makers' paints to try :)
Thank you Alyce - I love the paints SO much! Keep up the great work. :)
This was such a nice unboxing video! Calm as usual, it was nice to watch this while I was doing my work ☺ Also, I'm really tempted to get some of the watercolours for myself! (Even tho shipping costs $20 to where I live 😅)
Thanks Angelea - it was nice to keep you company while you worked! :) So pleased that you enjoyed the video. 🧡
Love your videos, only trouble it's making me want to buy stuff!
I apologise for that! ;) Glad that you're enjoying the videos though, Liz!
@@NatashaNewtonArt I keep coming back to your lovely relaxing videos. You have inspired me to make a muted colour palette and I've checked out some of the Etsy sellers you suggested. Looking forward to trying them out when they arrive and get cracking on some autumnal artwork :)
On handmade paints have the pigment numbers used? As new to water colors knowing the colors used to make that color helps me w mixing! Ty look like fun!
The sellers often list the pigment numbers in the product description online. :)
Love this video! I never knew about handmade watercolors until I came across your channel and I am so glad I did ❤️ there is so much to the watercolour world and you share so much of that in your videos 🥰 I’ve been looking at Nectar watercolours since your video - just wanted to know if you’ve painted with them and your thoughts on their paints.
Could you update the listing for Dan Barrett’s site? I checked all over, including Penholder Art, and couldn’t find it… thanks
I think he’s stopped making watercolours for now.
Hi, how long is handmade watercolors shelf life is? Do they not get spoiled after just a few years or months?
All paints will have a shelf life to some extent, but watercolours seem to last a long time in my experience, and I can't see why handmade watercolours wouldn't be the same if looked after well. Just always be sure to leave your palette open for a little while so that the paints can dry fully after you use them! This way you won't have a problem with mould and they should last longer.
@@NatashaNewtonArt ohh thank you for that new info, i didnt know that watercolors can mold if not dried properly after using, good thing I leave it overnight when i am done cause i'm lazy to clean up, thank u!
L love handmade watercolors. Unfortunately earth-friendly, vegan ones are very difficult to find.
What makes paint not vegan?
@@michelearcher3370 Maybe the binder? Cuz the pigments are usually derived from minerals if not natural then synthetic
Did you win the Lottery?
Ha ha, no - I've just been saving my money and spending it on art supplies!
Sadly as of 2023 many of these shops are looking not in operation
