Thank-you for taking the time to produce and publish this video for the public! I am a first-time boat owner and my 10 year old asked me if we needed to do anything to winterized our boat and it reminded me that yes we have work to do. If we didn't watch this it would have been a disappointing and costly startup in the spring! Thanks again from Canada!
Can't thank you enough for the video. Just bought a 5.0 gxi and need this done today. I had a hard time finding the block pepcocks, until I watched this a 2nd time. I put ran automotive coolant in after I drained the 4 pepcocks. thanks a million.
I poured stabiler in like you did then started my boat got it up to operating temp, then I sprayed fog and stalled motor.I then unscrewed all the plugs 2 manifold 2 block like you till completely drained. Then I unhooked the hoses from the top.Reinstalled all the plugs then poured marine antifreeze down the hoses till full.Reconected the hoses with my leg down and on an angle so the water could drain out of the leg.Took my battery out and put my cover on and done.Ive never had a problem with pouring the antifreeze in the hoses.Draining the plugs ensures no water in block and manifolds.Good video though 👍🏻
Thank you for answering my questions this the first time I'm winterizing my boat I work on cars for a living just Need it a little tutorial how to do it and your video and answers been great help thank you again
Thank you for such and excellent guide to winterising, the only issue I will face is getting something to pump the propylene glycol into the engine. (UK based so need to locate what was in your link previously.., its worth the investment year on year )
Thanks for the feedback. I agree that there are normally shortcuts on most of these jobs. As we are a dealer we try and follow a standard procedure that works well for all the models since there always seems to be an isolated instance we can't think of where a shortcut becomes a problem. However that isn't to say that these "alternative" methods don't offer real advantages in certain cases. What you've suggested seems like a good suggestion.
At the 4:44 mark where you are spraying something into the engine--is that "fogging" the engine? What is the stuff you are spraying and are you just spraying it into the carb's air intake?
Any thoughts on removing the thermostat before running the coolant through the system? How long does it take for the thermostat on the Volvo Penta to sufficiently open to allow coolant throughout the entire system?
I'm fairly certain you labeled the starboard side as the port side. The starter on my 5.0 GL -F is definitely on the starboard side. If I'm wrong, sorry. Otherwise, nice clear video of where everything thing is located.
It would be easier to put muffs over the intake on the lower unit and get it up to temp, then hook the muffs to a 5 gal bucket fitted with a hose and run rv antifreeze thru it till the antifreeze comes out and check the manifold and block plugs to verify that the antifreeze is through out
Is there a reason you ran the glycol through the muffs on the out drive instead of the hose fitting on the engine block? I'm curious if it is one or the other or either one is ok. Thanks
This should work the same for the 4.3 port injected v6 volvo Penta correct? Everything looks the same but I'm not sure if those lower block drains are there. I'll check tomorrow. Just to confirm what are you spraying into the air inlet?
I drain everything last nite just a couple question what you use to fog it and can you use any kind of antifreeze and pour it where the water hose connects on the engine? thanks again
+Hector Toro We use Sta-Bil fogging oil to fog the engine as we run the propylene glycol through the engine. As far as the antifreeze you can use any type of antifreeze just as long as it meets the freeze requirements in your area and you get the correct mixture into your engine block and cooling system. We HIGHLY recommend using the environmentally friendly propylene glycol for many reasons, it is a -50 degrees antifreeze and it will not harm any wildlife or fresh water systems and there is no mixture to worry about. Also you can pour the antifreeze in statically if you wish, it is typically a little more work to do it this way as you have to pour it in the thermostat directly in order to fill up the engine block, same with the both exhaust manifolds and sea water pumps and hoses. We use a 5 gallon tank with a pump and we run the engine using its sea water pump to pull the antifreeze into the engines block and cooling system until we see antifreeze exit through the exhaust that is the most efficient way to insure that ALL of the cooling system has been filled with antifreeze. I hope this answers your questions!
Great video. Could I put the antifreeze in the RUNNING ENGINE FLUSH PORT instead of at the water intake on the sterndrive? I also like CLASSICOUTBOADS idea of using a 5 gallon pail at the water pump intake.
Did you remove the thermostat before doing this? Otherwise the glycol would be bypassed and sent through the transom without circulating throught the engine?
No problem there are no dumb questions here. We drain everything then reinstall the drain plugs. Having the block drained first ensures that the antifreeze completely fills all of the cavities regardless of the thermostat being closed. This then protects from corrosion as well as in the event that a particular cavity did not drain completely the remaining water would get diluted with antifreeze and therefore protected from freeze damage. Then next spring you can start the engine with the boat in the water and allow the antifreeze to go directly into the water since you used the environmentally safe Propylene glycol versus ethylene glycol.
+Hector Toro You must read the instructions and then use the instructed amount of stabilizer. The bottle will tell you to use a specific amount based on how many gallons of fuel you are treating.
I have a 2005 Volvo Penta 5.7L engine in my Bennington pontoon boat. Do you use the same process for that engine (just asking about the engine flush process....I know how to do the outdrive).
Dear friend, I am following all your steps, but I have a problem on how to pump the antifreeze in the sytem. On min 4.27 I can see a big pink deposit, and I suppose that the yellow thing is a water pump. Do you think that I could do this through the blue hose on the engine (my engine is a Volvo 4.3gxi and it has the possibility of pumping water into the cooling system from there). Thanks a lot for this great video!
+Performance Product Technologies Great Video! I have the exact same engine and did every step in the video except that I did remove the stern drive completely (for a rebuild). Then I tried to pump antifreeze through the water hose entry next to the exhaust. I used a similar kit as you and put it on top of the boat, so this should have worked by gravity but antifreeze was never pumped in the negine. Do I have to warm the engine with water for a couple of minutes before starting the procedure all over again ? How long before antifreeze is pumped when engine is completely flushed of water ? Thanks for you great info
I have this same engine on my glastron, anyway I can get some help on how to start it up? I bought a used boat from my brother and he never used it so now I’m just trying to trouble on how to operate it?
I know this is a year old, but based on your details and question, I strongly recommend you have it thoroughly checked by a certified Volvo shop. It could save you thousands of dollars if you were to start it without having it serviced, etc.
That can be a tough one to answer without knowing the water line height of your engine and exhaust system. Normally when you winterize while the boat is left in the water you install of on/off ball valve to prevent water from continuing to flow into the bilge. You then just have to be careful that there is nothing that can be damaged by freezing of the water remaining in the line leading up to the shut off valve.
did you close the engine block drain plugs before you ran the antifreeze through it or leave them open and let the antifreeze drain out then close them? thanks sorry for the dumb question this is my first time doing this . great video by the way
Hi PPT, question on top.... Once the engine is totally drain (as you did) once you start up directly with antifreeze, would it be really "save" then and true that the block fills up everything, with AF? even through the (cold/closed thermostat)?
Wow this is amost perfect as I have the same engine. Is it necessary to put the antifreeze in? Also, what are you spraying to "fog" the engine and where do I spray it. I live in Toronto so it drops way below zero. I cant thank you enough this will save me $700 CDN.
When draining the engine there is no way to know 100% certain that there isn't a pocket of water retained in the engine. When this happens you can still experience freeze damage even after draining. Running the engine on antifreeze eliminates this possibility. Regarding the fogging of the engine you can use any type of standard fogging oil. www.perfprotech.com/product/search?search=fogging. You will introduce it into the engine at the carburetor or throttle body where the engine takes in air.
I have a much easier way of filling the cooling system with pink antifreeze on Volvos with the front mounted seawater pump which is after draining the block, manifolds, and water pump outlet hose, take the water intake hose off the seawater pump, blow thru the hose then pour pink thru it until pink comes out the water intakes on the drive, then hook a 5 gallon bucket with hose up to the water pump intake side and run 5 gallons of pink antifreeze thru while fogging.
+Jeremy Asaro Sorry the specific system used in the video is a custom system we made in-house. Here are the options we have available to purchase. www.perfprotech.com/flushers/category/6447
Thanks again for the video. Watch this every year to make sure I don't miss a step and never have had any problems with the boat.

Man I wish someone would post a video like this for a Penta 3.0GS-B this video was awesome.

That's for that feedback. As soon as we get a boat in that's equipped with the Volvo 3.0 GS we will do a video for it as well.
if you do not warm up the engine to open the thermostat does part of the engine block not get any anti freeze?

+Jeff Bell No problem. Thanks for watching!!

The Volvo marine engine is nothing more than a small block Chevy as in this case, and a big block Chevy for the bigger liter engines.
Do you put the whole jar of fuel stabilizer? I'm planning on doing it this weekend thanks for the great video
+Hector Toro You must read the instructions and then use the instructed amount of stabilizer. The bottle will tell you to use a specific amount based on how many gallons of fuel you are treating.
Where can I find a plug for the engine? My 2003 volvo 5.0L is missing the one on the SB side and I don't know what the thread is.

Are the sea cocks closed before you run the antifreeze through the engine?

If you do it while the engine isn't warm the thermostat isn't going to allow antifreeze to circulate through the engine correct?
That’s why we drain the everything first. They system will in fact fill if it’s empty when you start back up.

Anybody have a reference for the 3 litre Volvo?
I also have a 3.8 liter OMC engine & I do the exact same procedure as the 5 liter volvo/penta engine
Where can I get a pump like the one that is being used?
