- Complete winterization of a Volvo 270 engine in a Chaparral Sunesta 244. The 6 petcock valves are opened, drained, and cleaned out, the engine is restarted with 50 to 1 fuel to oil mixture to coat the inside of the engine, antifreeze is used to fill the block and exhaust manifolds with the engine running from above using the Above Board Volvo garden hose connection. The fuel and oil filters are replaced and 5 quarts of Volvo synthetic 10 W 40 oil is used.

Just bought a boat yesterday that needs a oil change and this was perfect. Took the boat out for a spin yesterday to demo and we are getting small winter snap tonight. Thanks for taking the time to show where the petcocks were.
Hey buddy, thanks for the shout out. Remember there are three on each side. I’m glad you found it helpful. Consider subscribing. Thanks, Joe.
Will buy a boat now under winter when the prices in Sweden are at their lowest. Would prefer a cabin boat without canopy but found a Windy 22 from 1977 in top condition with all originals and documentation and best of all it has a 2015 VP 270 V8.
A bow thruster is also installed.
If I end up buying it for $10,300 this video will be worth its weight in gold as I would prefer to take care of the boat myself.
Thank you for sharing and greets from Sweden.
Thank you for your wonderful comment. It’s wonderful to have a bath thruster I wish I had one in my boat. Looks like you figured out which one to get. Enjoy the feeling of successfully caring for your own equipment. It is great. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.
What type of anti freeze do you recommend and where did you get it? In other videos I see some folks are draining the water out of the water pump/impeller intake and outtake lines. Did you not need to do this because you fill it with antifreeze? Thank you Doctor.
You ask a great question. I put Marine grade antifreeze in the engine, which is orange and I buy it at West Marine. You can get it probably at Walmart or other stores as well. I’d look online if you don’t have a West Marine near you. But once you fill it with antifreeze, you are good to go. You will not have any issues with your impeller pump, etc. it works perfectly. Thank you for your question consider subscribing. Take care. Joe.
Thank you. How much antifreeze should I buy? I also am wondering about the L connector you seemed to have put on where fuel line goes into fuel filter. Where can I find one of those? It looks like you took off existing fuel line, leaving boats fuel line on barb. You seemed to put on an L connector (1/2” male on both ends?) and hooked up your oil/gas mixture to it with 1/2 female connector. Is that correct? Also, is it okay to change the oil and filter a couple of days before I pull the boat and then do the draining of water from engine and replace it with antifreeze back at my house? I’m trying to maximize days I can use the boat at our summer cabin before I put her out for the winter and then head back West to my home.
So I tried to do the thing with the antifreeze and here's what happened. I hooked up a gallon jug to the port and without the engine running it took all of it. I thought it looked like your jug was only filled to about a gallon's worth so I said it must all be in there now and that ought to do it. Ran the engine at idle for a bit, temp didn't come up, but then got an engine alarm "contact dealer". I am assuming that the amount of anti freeze I put in wasn't enough to get to the pump so it never ran through the engine. Temp sensor never moved off cold. So I closed it all up and now I'll have to get more antifreeze. How much did you actually have in your video. My engine is exactly the same, so I just need to know what I did wrong. Thanks.
I sympathize with you 2 gallons minimum some suggest three. After you fully emptied your engine by removing and replacing all six of the blue petcock screws. Then fill it and you’ll fine with it running that it starts to come out of the outdrive sometime during the 2nd gallon typically consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.
Can 2 cycle gas be added in the fuel filter to accomplish coating the engine?
You ask an excellent question. Volvo actually recommends connecting the fuel line with two cycle to the inside of the engine with the oil fuel mixture. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe. If you watch my whole video, disconnect the fuel line and connect it so that we’re putting in an oil and gasoline mixture.
Does the hose hookup bypass the thermostat or should you warm up the engine before adding the coolant?
OK that is a great question. No it does not bypass the thermostat and no you do not need to warm the engine up so the thermostat is open. With the hose hook up to us as it fills the entire lower aspect of the block and all of the tubing, wherever there is water or coolant in the engine as how it winterize it.
