No need to shake the rod tip, with a spinning reel you can just put your index finger down and let the line catch on it as it spools and that will impart the exact same action. I’ve done that for years to get baby flukes and other small soft jerkbaits to subtly dart and walk underwater.
Cracks me up how people chase fads .....many of which are just old techniques that people revive......just like how fashion trends repeat. Great video as always!
Amen.... I enjoy many of the videos, but in the end I most always throw what I already know to work. Which in the cold season I like chatterbait jigs, and in the summer I opt for topwater spooks and cheap Ole Walmart swimbaits 😅
@@egomaniac247 I deleted my comment. My apologies for being a jerk. Too many negative comments, IMO, addressing the same thing you are pointing out. I read yours wrong.
Ok..I tried a freeloader on a 1/4 oz ball head this weekend ,and it worked ! Sometimes burning it is better than shaking but I have a long way to go. I got in early on the hover juggle which did squat for me at my lake. This worked there. Thanks for the info! I did lose one when the loop knot slipped out of the line tie.
The more things change the more they stay the same. Forty five years ago we were doing the same thing with simple three inch grubs with quarter oz. heads we poured. They were killer in clear cold water. We varied speed, depth and action and color. Wish we had these more realistic baits.
I've been using this technique for about five years and it works extremely well year round, especially late into summer and fall when fish become more pressured. My main success comes in the form of bass, crappie, and walleye. I've caught a few master angler crappie and walleye doing this with the hogfarm lure, flukes, or any drop shot style lure. It works with any non-paddle lure really, as long as you can make it walk. Hell, if youre using a paddle tail lure like a keitech and the tail gets ripped off, it will still roll and rock from side to side with relatively good action.
Round baits can work if they are transparent with sparkles, so they flash like crazy vs the two tone flash. Works for very pressured fish. Baits like the Duo Realis finder shad or v-tail shad are round but super sparkle-y. mid strolling the 1.3 gram duo small rubber jig + v-tail has been working super good for me the whole past year.
This is the exact technique to fishing a jig or crappie jig for trout. Been doing that for 8 years. Now I understand all the winter bass I’ve caught “strolling” a trout tube.
great vid, Matt! Another jig head that works great on finesse setup is the Zman finesse EyeZ head. While it has light wire hook, on a slow/medium retrieve it also does a little walk the dog like the duo head. 👍
I’ve been gone a while but really enjoyed that video ! Glad you guys are still putting out useful content to the every man fisherman. From bank to boat! I appreciate you!
This is all I’ve been doing for walleye in the river from shore. Water is still wide open so it’s a fantastic opportunity to catch walleye. Absolutely smoking em to.
15 years ago strolling was defined as trolling with the trolling motor instead of the big motor which is illegal in BASS tournaments. The angler would make a long cast, put the reel in free spool, engage the trolling motor, go forward until the line was about down to the spool, stop the trolling motor and start cranking.
I agree with the river fishing statement. Killer tactic I can’t wait to use the larger styled baits for it. Pounded on em in 32-33 degree water the other day on nearly inactive fish that wouldn’t eat slow stuff like jigs and jerkbaits.
@@tacticalbassin I’m not ahead of the curve haha. I obsess over bass fishing (which is probably why I relate to you guys!) and am always on the hunt for new fun and effective ways of catching fish. Last year I started dragging swim baits on the bottom in 25-30 feet of water on structure and rock piles with a friend of mine. He showed me and it was awesome how well it worked. Not always the most exciting way to catch them. But when you’re catching fish and other people aren’t. It makes you feel good!!!!

99.999% of YT fishing videos are re-inventing the wheel. Over 60 years of fishing I have watched people put all sorts of soft plastics on jig heads while pier fishing in the ocean, in rivers, in lakes, and farm ponds. The one thing you can take to the bank is that sometimes you catch fish, and sometimes you do not catch fish.
@benboothe6758 Yep. Still fish them. 3" Baby Shad in Rainbow Trout free falling is killer on some smallmouth lakes around here. Kind of knocked the Getzit off the pedestal. Of course, the Getzit had knocked the Lil Bit on a darter head jig off the champion pedestal. Not really sure there are any better fishing lures, but the new hot thing definitely catches fishermen
It can get a little tiring shaking the tip unless you have a solid tip or lighter rod. The finger hitting the fishing line method if you are retrieiving works or tapping the rod with your finger shaking the slack line when wanting it to just pendulum back are good methods.
This technique is DEADLY for crappie from boat or bank with much more downsized baits. It’s my go to with baits from 1” to 2.25” but with 1/64 to 1/16 heads.
I like to use a 2 1/2 tube With a 1/8 ounce jig head and a split shot inside the top of the tube. Gives it little different action that mimics the hoverstoll!
Been using this technique on a shakeyhead for several years now. Puts a swim motion on a worm and gives it some roll too. Need a spinning rig to do it properly though. Slightly slower and slightly larger twitches on the rod. Bass cant resist.
Happy New Year! Yes Matt, everyone is talking about strolling these days. I still need to get on board and will as I have several of these baits and jig heads 😉
@taticalbassin I bought everything on Damiki rig in the link. Live near Myrtle Beach I’ve been twice for 2 hrs each time and had 6 strikes and landed 4.
i put the jig head hook through the side of a berkley champ minnow . rigging it flat causes the swim bait to death spiral on the drop . twitches with the rod will make the swim bait move like a bait fish in death convulsions .

It's awesome for hover strolling/ spiral bait, but also works great on a mid-stroll
All I can say is the zman willowvibez might just be the next big bait for the year. It does all of these things on a straight retrieve. Though I’ll probably pick up some freeloaders and hybrid swimbait heads. One bait I’ve had success with is the zman streakz but doing the same shake and retrieve.
I just caught a new PB yesterday day hover strolling, with a 6th sense juggle minnow, rigged up "Ben millikens hover juggle" way with the dome head nail weight, I went 8lb 4oz and it was laying in the mud in 26ft of water, I caught it on a med spinning combo, with 10lb braid and 8lb leader.
Believe it or not Matt, that new Freeloader bait from Rapala works well on the hover or strolling rigs and even a chatterbait. You’ll have to try it in place of the spunk shad soon.
Before I knew much about this I used to do pretty well, with a Yamamoto shad shape room on a dart head. I still like the shad shape work on a Dirty Jigs guppy head.
Matt, great work on this video. Have you thought about dropping the reel size down to a 1000 or 1500 size instead of 2500. Just thinking about slowing down the retrieve with the smaller reels. Got my butt kicked couple years ago by a dude throwing smallish baits on smaller reel vs. me throwing same bait on bigger reel little faster retrieve speed. Something to think about.
Been throwing this a little bit lately but haven’t built the confidence in it quite yet. Going to keep at it though and I know once I stick that first fish I’ll feel better about it. Also little side note but the budget rod goes to a St. Croix and not the Shimano that’s listed
3in watermelon pearl gulp minnow is something I used to throw a lot for years in all different ways and weights on a jig head mostly better for light weight and clearer water. Bass big crappie sauger walleye white bass didn't matter it always did its job Happy New Fishing Season

Very interesting information and technique. Like you mentioned Matt, I definitely already have a majority of the needed items. Just a matter of implementing the techniques. Thanks for the great video and information! Happy New Year!
I fish a reservoir lake with spotted bass and find that most of my bites come on the drop. Keep the line tight and let it swing down slowly and they come up and crush it. Especially if your fishing it through bait fish.
Might have missed it in the video but when are the best times of the year to use this technique? Seems like summer and winter but is it an all year technique?
Fish definitely adapt to lures. I fished a spot four days in a row one year. Each day the keyed in one a different lure. They would hit the original lure every once in a while. I was hoping for an in depth on this! Want to get into it this winter. I finally caught some largemouth on a dropshot over the weekend! I had thrown it before but usually put it down very quickly and switched to a Ned rig or shaky head because I had no confidence in the drop shot. I will definitely be throwing it a lot more now.
Does this play in Florida? I’m always looking for a new technique to play with 👊🏼👊🏼 Thanks for all the excellent content over the years! I had a giant slam the TN60 Today, got an 8.5 in the net on New Year’s Day
My question on this strolling and free rig and hover strolling is how much of this requires ffs and clear water. I ask because i dont have ffs, and one lakes i fish has green dye. Many days lucky to see my bait 8 inches
Remember when we called these flukes before we called them swim baits, before we called them drop shot baits, before we called them pin tail minnows, before we called them... 🙄And remember when we called this rod technique the Alabama shake? Hell, remember when we used to call this walleye fishing? 😂 Guess it works for bass too.
Ive done basically this type of lure at lake mead for years. Its hit and miss during the summer here at this lake. But in winter ive been doing well with a chatterbait jig setup. I will try this here next. These fish get very lazy at 57 degrees in the west 😅
It works with any predatory fish large and small mouth and stripers. I was up in echo bay nv yesterday and, though the water is just starting to warm up, I was able to hit some stripers
2 questions, first, have you guys tried to upsize this technique with huge straight tailed plastics and upsized gear/ heavier for the bait size jigs? Next a comment. I think there’s a different man who potentially coined this technique. I can’t think of his name, however, this technique, I’m glad there’s a real name for it now, but ott Defoe has been doing this a long time and someone before him started it he mentioned in a pick 5 video a couple years ago, but with small minnow plastics. I always called it the ‘ott Defoe version of tightlining’ what a name haha. Because when you looked up tightlining no one was doing what he was it was something else. His version of tightlining was this strolling deal. And it really is the deal everywhere I’ve fished. I never thought to try bigger baits/hooks with it like wheeler did. Obviously that was a good idea. I will say the freeloader plastic I picked up recently is special with the jigs I build though. Really does some interesting things, I can get it to rock, dip up and down, but also dart like a soft jerkbait without moving forward much, versatile. Can’t wait for spring/summer and I’ve gotten some fish in 32.5-33 degree water doing it when they won’t eat a jig or jerkbait already so it’s impressed me thus far.
No need to shake the rod tip, with a spinning reel you can just put your index finger down and let the line catch on it as it spools and that will impart the exact same action. I’ve done that for years to get baby flukes and other small soft jerkbaits to subtly dart and walk underwater.

Ive done basically this type of lure at lake mead for years. Its hit and miss during the summer here at this lake. But in winter ive been doing well with a chatterbait jig setup. I will try this here next. These fish get very lazy at 57 degrees in the west 😅
Are you targeting smallies ? Will it work on the stripers as well ?

Matt,
