    Like its new and sensational Cayman GTS brother, the Porsche Boxster GTS is a slightly more potent but considerably more precise version of the regular Porsche Boxster S. Power rises to 326bhp and torque to 273lb ft, and you get Porsche's PASM suspension and Sports Chrono Package as standard. Steve Sutcliffe finds out whether it is as good as its sibling.

    Even while he was reviewing the Mclaren P1 I've never seen Steve seem quite so happy and excited while reviewing a car than he was with the Boxster GTS. Just goes to show you can have all the numbers on paper in the world and be the best of the best in a game of top trumps, but in the real world it's all about how a car feels and drives and man am I jealous that I don't get to experience this car because it looks like absolute gold!

    I never get tired of Steve's reviews. He is one of best out there. I sold my Boxster S just before lockdown to upgrade to a 981 GTS. So can't wait to find the right one 🤞🏼

    In my opinion, this goes back to what the original 911 was, a very simple, yet enjoyable, sports car.

      It would be a tough choice between a used 2011 Carrera GTS and the new Cayman/Boxster GTS at the same price point.

  • @Trendyflute

    I'm sure the heavy on the road feeling is because the Boxster had steel brakes and the Cayman had the lighter (and pricier) PCCBs. That's a significant amount of unsprung weight and rotational inertia.

    If I lived in Mallorca (my girlfriend is from there) i'd take the Boxster GTS no doubt, that last bit of handling is irrelevant when you have nice mountain roads and amazing weather.

    Excellent review. I love my 06 Cayman S but I do acknowledge how far the Boxster/Cayman platform has come and would prefer a 2014 if I could afford it -- which I cannot. As good as the GTS versions are however, wait until the GT4 arrives. It might finally be that balls-to-the-wall, no-compromise version we've been waiting for.

    • @markdavids1605
      @markdavids1605 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you driven one? The technology of the 981 has advanced, but some of the old school feel has been lost. I still prefer the original Cayman as its older technology makes the driver a bigger part of the equation. If I lived at the track I'd take the new model but like many cars these days its true performance can't be explored on public roads.

    • @UDPride
      @UDPride 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have driven the new 981s. Much better cars in my opinion. Handle even better and you cannot dismiss an extra 40-45hp. The PSE is actually worth the money (finally) and you wont have to go aftermarket like I did. Interior is also a huge step forward. Not to say I dont love my '06 - I flat out love it.

    Thank you, Steve! Great review. I have 997 Turbo manual tuned, which I do not even drive anymore since I switched to motorcycles, but out of all cars available on the market the only ones that excite me are Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS. I would go for Cayman GTS, my gt wants Boxster GTS. :-)

      I was draging my feet until the very last moment on that issue, and even though it was quite some time ago I had seen all these GTS reviews, I remembered this particular one and how the dude enjoyed the sound of the open Boxster - and so I opted for the Boxster GTS :) I just came back here to see what he was on about again, and I think I made the right decision, for me, anyway. It is about personal preference, don't beat yourself up over it.

      I think the F-type looks a little to much like a Japanese car (not bad but not Jaguar), maybe a Honda 2000. And I know you don't get this kind of cars for the boot but the Jaguar is just ridiculous in that respect. I want to be able to take my girl on an escapade over the weekend and be able to fit a suitcase somewhere preferably not on her lap.

    I actually think it looks better than an F type, and it probably drives better too. Being within the same-ish price range, the F type only really has the soundtrack going for it, but the Porsche just seems like the dictionary definition of a sports car, and Porsches sort of always have been haven't they?

    Hmm. They give Sutcliffe PDK equipped cars more often that not as he loves autos, and the cars he drives are generally stuffed with aids and options I've no interest in. At Evo, they usually get manuals and more enthusiast-specced cars to try. No big deal, but it's something that puts these Autocar videos as also rans in my 'to watch' list.

    • @charleslu7044
      @charleslu7044 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounded a little too tinny to my ears! The Milltek sets off alarms in parking garages. LOL. I had to choose between the BS and the M Roadster from 2006 with the magnificent 3.2 straight 6, 343 hp! At least I closed the gap! The BS a "great chassis with a very good motor, the M Roadster is a good chassis with a great motor"! The combo of a short shifter with lightweight flywheel makes rev matching a joy, the engine just howls downshifting off freeway ramps, just as much fun as accelerating up ramps! Guys here are rather simple minded with their comments, they need to double clutch more.

    • @RealRaynedance

      Charles Lu Now you see my point. It needed modification to sound any good. Hence why I don't understand the obsession with stock Porsche exhausts.

      Did you not even watch the video??? It's not just about the horsepower. It's about everything else that makes driving a car fun. The Porsche beats the shitty rice rocket any day. Have fun looking like a major tool in your 300 HP Subaru.

    • @umaxen01
      @umaxen01 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Schultz Has nothing to do with "rice". Has to do with the fact that Porsche should be making something far more special. My 6 year old, Toyota Camry V6 has 270 hp for God's sake... This "super sports car" has 300? Come on...

    • @augustortiz
      @augustortiz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +umaxen01 the problem is that, while you are more focused on power, the real reason you buy a boxster is not for going fast in a straight line, if you want something fast then go buy some other car, i own a boxster and can say that once you drive it, you really stop caring about any other car on the road, a riced out civic could beat me in a straight line and i still would not give a shit. I sincerly recomend you to go drive any boxster, 986,987,981. They are all just brilliant.

      Funny, but guys who buy Porsche's seem to be looking for the best driving experience... you don't see the macho sophomore attitude/concern (who can I beat? or who can beat me?). What you see in this price range is people looking beyond 0-60 times and looking for a car that hits all the important aspects of driving a really great sports car (weight, feel, handling, thrills, seat of the pants fun, the sensation of speed, how it sticks in the corners) I've gone faster in a 600hp Lamborghini and I've done quicker lap times on the track in a Ferrari 458... but I still prefer the Cayman as a daily driver, as its magic is turning daily trips on public roads into fantastic drives.

    Nice enough but my BMW z4m every bit as good on a much lower budget then these. Additionally mine has had no major failures that these are renowned for. You need the $$, that aside, these cars from this era had a special magic that’s why they will never be well remembered.

      Sorry Dave ..but you are living in cuckoo land if you honestly think the Z4 is in the same league as a 981 Boxster....

    Boxster is actually better than the 911! It suppose to continue the legacy of 550 Spyder.
    Shame on Porsche! Made this model such a weak famine image!
    I love this car, but I drive a BMW M3 instead of this “Women’s Porsche”.
