Osprey Atmos AG 65 Backpack Review - carry heavy loads with ease!

- Here is a review of my Osprey Atmos AG 65 Backpack bag. I was forced to change my last Osprey backpack after finding it a touch too big. However, this Osprey Atmos backpack fits perfectly in a size medium. This osprey atmos 65 backpack is a 65 litre backpack that weighs 2.2kg and is packed full of features including Osprey's fully ventilated AG Anti Gravity fully adjustable back.
At £220 this osprey rucksack is not cheap but I see it as an investment that will last for years.

I love my Atmos AG 65. The other week I hauled 21.5KG with no problems, and it was way more comfortable than carrying 16KG in my Exos 48.
Worth noting that you have the 2018 version of the pack and they've been updated for 2022.
Yes, but the updates are fairly minor.

I agree with you 100% about Osprey packs being an investment. They last for years and hold their resale value so well that when you do finally come to sell them you can get a big chunk of your original outlay back meaning that they actually cost very little.

I regularly use mine without the lid and use the two zipped front pockets for all the things I usually keep in lid pockets. Totally agree about the weight not being an issue given it’s all invested in the comfort, nothing different to taking a heavier sleeping bag in colder conditions. Been a game changer for me compared to lighter packs especially for trips of more than one night.
My Kestrel 48 is great, but my shoulders start to really hurt on longer walks with 15+ kg in the bag. The Atmos is much better for carrying heavier loads.
I have the previous model of the Atmos 65. It does its job of transferring the weight to your hips. The mesh back is a game changer.

Yup my go to bag nowadays, due to being a sweaty mess, a bit heavy and noisy but nothing missing from it at all and super comfy.

Excellent informative video ,you do some excellent informative videos mate..I just bought this , but the new The Atmos AG LT 65, which weighs lighter at 1.9kg. My main reason for getting this one is the Anti-gravity suspension, that helps to transfer weight down to the hips, thus less pressure on the Lumbar spine. Im 60 now,served in Army Infantry fr many years ,carrying huge weights ,extreme fitness etc that have shortened my lumbar discs causing sum discomfort..
However i borrowed a mates AG 65 fr a weeks wild camping and had no back discomfort at all. It was like i was carrying a lot lot less than i was.
So bought it today,interest free credit on amazon uk, in Scenic Valley/Green colour. So anyone watching this with lower back lumbar problems , its worth paying extra for this Osprey tent..
I have the AG50 and it's without doubt the best backpack I've ever had.
The AG system with the webbing running from the shoulders to the hips and round the sides actually feels like its lifting the pack up and forward. The balance is phenomenally good. I hiked and climbed Blencathra with it fully loaded and it felt like it was a part of me.
I love my mammut Ducan Spine for day hikes but for longer journeys the Atmos is my forever pack.
It definitely comes into its own once it’s fully loaded. The design is really, really good!
I will say that the way the belt grips you like a crab claw takes some getting used to though, first few times I put it on it was a bit faffy.
Have this same pack. The AG system carries so well!
It’s excellent, I can’t fault it.
Can I ask what part you thought made the L too big. There seems to be overlapping of pack sizes for measurements. I reckon I teeter on M and L

Finished Wainwright's Coast 2 Coast a couple of weeks ago, my first long distance hike&camp. I had a real struggle. Then my backpack broke and i got one of these (new version). My walk was so much easier after that! My load out seemed so much lighter!!
Firstly, well done! What an achievement! I just want people to understand a heavier backpack can actually make carrying weight more comfortable. When you try it you'll never go back.

The Kestrel 48 is perfect is lighter summer backpacking!
Just had the Atmos 65 turn up yesterday direct from Osprey. When I saw they were on clearance for £165 after having my eye on one for a while, I pulled the trigger. There is a '22 model out now at full retail but couldn't justify the extra, just to have the latest model. There's no major difference that I could see. Tested it out last night with a test pack weight and it really does handle it well. The hip belt and "suspension" back/frame really does feel like it's lightening the load.
I think you made the right decision, £100 saving is a lot!
I've got the Osprey Stratos 26 and it's amazingly comfy. Often considered getting a bigger AG model, but been busy buying budget backpacks used and you can't get Ospreys cheap, even battered ones!
This one and my Aether 60 were both ‘nearly new’ off eBay. Both approx £100 each. I think you can buy this one in the sales now.
I love ur videos. New to wild camping and bought a lot of gear just watching ur videos past few months. I just got the aether 70ag rucksacktoday. How would u compare ur aether 70ag vs this atmos 65ag in comfort.
The shoulder straps and hip belts are almost identical. They're both exceptionally comfy!

picked up the new 2022 version of the Atmos today. Trying to fit it. Does yours feel quite close to the back of your head ? Oh and you can no longer remove the top section of the backpack.
Are the adjusting straps on the top of the shoulder pads too tight? If so, slacken them off a bit. Failing that, tie the lid down more using the adjusters on the front.

I don't know how you do your bag up, but osprey recommend doing the hip belt first, then the main shoulder straps then the cinching of top straps, I find it works a treat and I don't have to reach around so much when getting out my water bottle, though I have added a caribena to the loop so it makes it easier to take out and put back in your chosen water bottle. 👍

I am with Atmos 68 l about 200 days a year and carrying 20-25 kg with ascending of 1.5 km daily ... Alpine area, real working horse. (carrying my working equipment for geographic work).

@@BackpackingUK I have uploaded a video a few days ago from my working expeditions when I am carrying over 25 kg o with Osprey 65 AG (Large one which is 68 l)... still editing English subchapters but someone can get the idea what it means 25 kilograms and the ascent of 1500 m in 3 hours... and I am well trained ...
Andy, I’m looking at buying this. I can only see Black, Green and Blue as options online although yours looks grey/silver? Assume it’s the black or blue one?
There is an updated version with new colours hence why this colour is not available.

Last summer my trusty 35L Regatta bag was retired and I went for the Osprey Stratos 26lt which is like a mini version on this pack so if you don't need 65lt, this would be a good alternative.

Great video mate. I'm looking to buy this backpack or the aether 65 what one would you go for out of the 2 as I know you have both. I have the kestrel 58 at the moment but need a bit more space and better back ventilation.
I’d say either get the old style Aether or the new style Atmos 👍

Nice review! What do you think about the load capacity? I understood that it’s rated for 18 kg max. My use case will be 18-20kg (lugging a week supply of food across Norway) so logically the Aether would make more sense. I like the characteristics of the Atmos (better ventilation, stow on the go, no straightjacket straps crossing the front pocket) slightly more, so if the Atmos would handle 18-20kg well, I would prefer that one. Since you used both of these, I would appreciate your thoughts.
To me, the Atmos feels more heavy duty compared to my Aether 60. Carrying 20kg will never be easy whatever pack you have but I think the Atmos can take it.
@@BackpackingUK Thanks. Yeah, Most of my stuff is already very light, but a week’s supply of food and fuel will always be heavy. And I probably carry 1.5 kg of camera equipment.
Looks exactly like mine, and I totally agree with you about the comfort level. Did you also get the 2021 model on sale before the release of the revised 2022 version? I think the changes are mostly main compartment access from two side zippers, new sizing system and use of recycled materials.
Yes, the price has now gone up to £260.
@@BackpackingUK I picked mine up for about £140 (the large I had to send back was £125). Think the new version runs about £250 in my country now, but I've actually seen them as low as £180.
One more thing I like is that I can fit my Lanshan 2, sleeping pad, pillow and sleeping bag in the bottom compartment. Camp set up without digging through anything else.
The 2022 version also moves the raincover from the lid to another compartment on the bottom. That's a huge quality of life improvement for me as that raincover wasted so much space in the most useful part of the pack.

Whether you need a size M or L has nothing to do with the weight you carry. It has to do with the length of your back!!!
Measure the length between the C7 vertebrae and the iliac crest. Be sure to follow the contours of the spine. If it's over 20 inches buy a large if not it's likely a medium. I'm 185cm with 21inch back and got the medium, which is 18-21 large 21+

Don't take large but do medium. I am 185 cm high and large is set at the minimum length. My daughter is 178 cm high and she uses a medium one and the back is set in the middle. Atmos is a unisex rucksack although there is a woman version. My daughter used Atmos last year with a thru-hike of GR 20 - Corsica, she is athletic but slim and carried 17 kg all 190 km of mountain trail without issue, sure she was trained in the Alps and with the proper boots...people are making a huge mistake using sneakers with a heavy load.
Just got the Atmost 65 LT yesterday... anyone with knee issues using this vs a lighter weight pack? I also have a 60L Gossamer Gear Mariposa, which is half the weight. I can definitely feel how comfy the Atmost is on my back(when empty). I guess I'll try it tonight with some weight... see how my knees like it.
Can you tell me if the Atmos 65, compared to the Atmos 50, only has an increased capacity of 10 liters and offers an identical carrying experience otherwise? If so, purchasing the 65-liter version should be a better choice, as it can carry the same volume as the 50-liter Atmos while providing the same experience, and it also has the capacity for 65 liters, allowing me to carry more items.

Osprey have now changed to S/M or L/XL for most bags in the UK. This is annoying as I was a M or M/L! Now I’m a S/M.

This looks like the older model. They released a new one a month or so ago. Has side access now into the main compartment.
Yes, that’s right. A lot of their packs have received very minor updates but it’s fundamentally the same pack.
I am doing the West Highland way in September. This could be the perfect rucksack. Have a 10% code for Osprey plus your getting a free water hydration pack. should I take the plunge on the 2022 version ?
Those reservoirs aren’t cheap so with 10% off I’d go with it if you have the money. Ospreys warranty is excellent too.

I have the Aether AG70 and bought it under similar circumstances to yourself. I'm a tad taller than yourself; what made you feel it wasn't fitting right?
It didn’t sit on my hips right. I had a large and I’m 5’8”. A medium fits me perfectly.
@@BackpackingUK I know it's all down to torso length but I'm 5'10. I know what you mean, my hip belt almost meets at the front but I can't afford a replacement at the moment.
Wish they made that color. They seem to only have that bright blue color now.
How come the new Atmos AG has "airspeed" on its back? Isn't it AG suspension? Or has it changed to airspeed? Thanks.
This confuses a lot of people. Airspeed just relates to the mesh. The framed back system is the Anti-Gravity part.

Nice rucksack, I am to old and knackered to carry anything over 45L, I am also to mean to spend Osprey money. Ever had a Deuter ?
I had a deuter,fell apart after two years,not good,but saying that,their down sleeping bags are excellent 👍

My fjallraven kakja 75 is over 3kg comfortable though.

Strange, my is 2.6kg. It is heavy, I found using more often forclaz with very similar suspension and back ventilation.But I can’t fault it. Heavy for me but it is still great bag.i paid £140 in Go Outdoors on sale, so it might be worth to look there.

Heard the atmos squeeks quite a bit. Is that true?
Mine didn’t but I’ve heard the same. My mate’s Farpoint is ridiculously noisy!
I was lucky to find exactly this model used. Firstly, I considered to buy the new 2022 model, but it is heavier, has (for me) useless side access zippers and these shoulder strap extensions, which lead to a sort of little step on the padding underneath the straps (where the extensions end). This is no real problem, though, but I was never missing such extensions on other Osprey backpacks. What I also dislike is the fact that Osprey dropped these stiffener bars underneath the load lifter straps. They contribute a lot to the stability of the pack you are presenting.
The rain cover is now in a dedicated pocket on the bottom of the pack, but I do not like it to be located there. Incase of a sudden rain, you put the rucksack down on the bottom, which hinders the accessibility of the cover.
One more final remark: I hear again and again that the weight of the Atmos AG 65 does not matter at all. Sure, it sits comfortably on your back, but your knees and your feet do not know that ;-)
I know what you mean about the rain cover being located on the bottom, it makes no sense! My Skarab 34 has side pocket that unzip from the bottom so everything falls out!!!

No, you have to go through the top or bottom. You can on the Osprey Aether though.

This is a medium. However, I’m a S/M in their new sizing structure.

There is, you poke them into the hip belt over the top of the clip

To be honest, none of the Osprey backpacks are cheap. However, in this case, I do believe you get what you pay for. Tip - always look out for them in the sales 😉
@@BackpackingUK the price of 270 € is a fair price for that rucksack (a price for dinner in downtown for a couple at my place). It is not expensive... expensive is a 50 € rucksack which doesn't fit someone's need.

Basically, weight. There really isn't anything else I would change. If you carry a fair amount of weight, the Atmos and Aether are superb.
Better than aether?
Personally I thought the old Aether was better. However, they’ve changed the designs so now I’d say the Atmos is better!

100%, but Osprey are the market leader.
This bag looks fantastic, but that mesh at the back is the weak point. Quickly gets ripped after several uses.
I haven't had issues. The mesh is pretty strong.
