Great review! I just bought the Aether and discovered great features I didn't notice at first. Between my canoe-camping trips and travels, I think the Aether will be perfect for me. Good job.
There is an updated Aether "Plus" in 60, 70, 85 and 100 (& Arial Plus too). Looks like it now has the trekking pole carry, similar to the Atmos 65. On top of that, it has a removal day lid that can convert to a small day pack, as well as the integrated flap jack cover, again like the Atmos has; I assume it's easier to remove the lid now too, but couldn't tell for sure. But the price went up quite a bit. The 60L retails at $340 and goes up from there for the larger liter packs. There is also the Aether AG 85, which appears to be a sort of a Frankenstein of the Aether back and hip belt along with the shoulder straps and partial hip/back webbing of the Atmos but, it's on sale now, so I assume it's on its way out and being replaced by the new Aether and Arial Plus lineups; the Aether Plus 85 can carry 5 more lbs than the Aether AG 85 version. And there is the Aether Pro, but perhaps that's a slightly different comparison. Anyway, I have the Atmos 65 and may upgrade to one of the Aethers, as I need to be able to carry heavier loads (the Atmos 65 doesn't take kindly to overloading, but is a great pack and I like it very much otherwise.)
I just got the Atmos 65 and I’m very impressed. Thanks for showing that shoulder strap adjustment. I’ve been messing around with the pack for several days and never noticed that. Love your videos. 😁
This was exactly what I was looking for. A good comparison between the atmos and aether series and a close look at the features. I made my mind and am going to purchase the aether mainly because they come in a bigger size than 65 liters. Also digging the front access panel to the main compartment. That alone will save me time having to unpack and repack and making adjustments to my main compartment. Awesome video!
Another awesome video my friend! Was just at REI on Saturday and tried on both packs. Went home with the Aether. The more the load weight went up , the better it felt. Both great packs though.
First time I've seen your videos and you've done a great job at reviewing these products in ways that make sense. Thanks for the review. I subscribed and look forward to more of your reviews!

I love how lively and excited you are in your videos to. So much better than the other boring monotone videos everyone else is putting out. Subbed.
Love the panel loading system on the aether. The extra pockets on the atmos only eat into the space of the main compartment so not really useful. Also the deep side pockets on tbe aether can take a tent or tent poles!
Hey Chris great to see you again. Hope you had a great Christmas and just wanted to wish you a very Happy New year and may 2021 bring you much success, joy and happiness. Stay safe and catch up again real soon.
I bought the orange Aether 60 last year, and maybe two months later the new Atmos came out. I was kicking myself because I really wanted to swap! I like the Atmos grey over the Aether orange. I do like the extra tie downs on the Aether-never knew I needed them until I needed them lol! As always, great video and thanks for everything you're doing!
Hey, thanks for the review. I have just bought an Atmos ag 65. As the one you reviewed in the video the font style of the "anti gravity " and "Atmos ag 65" has been changed. At first I thought it was a fake one but the rest of the bag proves its a genuine osprey item. I prefer the old font style and the vertical letters on the right arm strap. Sad they changed the design.. but still a great backpack. Cheers. K
I don't really know what to say, other than you stumped me on this comparison? I appreciate the comparison though. I feel like your making me think more up.. Thank you again for taking your time to "do what ya do"! Thanks Base Camp Chris. ✌️👍
@@basecampchris I'm running a 4000 Teton for months now. I'm not too concerned about base weight yet.. Mostly cityscape/bike packing. Would you ever consider doing A review on a "higher" end ul pack?
I love the suspension system of the Atmos, but (for me) it has one design flaw that is a deal-breaker. It has limited main front compartment access, unlike the Aether. If you need to reach something in the middle or bottom of your pack you must go down from the top or try and find items from the side zippered access point. That gets to be a pain. This design makes it much more difficult to reach gear that might be at the bottom or middle of your pack. Especially, larger gear. You can't, for example place a camera cube with photo gear and long lenses in the main compartment and easily access them like the Aether. I do like the TMP (webbing) that rests against your back found on the Atmos, which helps with airflow and to prevent sweating on hot days. Unfortunately, the Aether doesn't have that design, although it's design isn't too bad. For my needs I ended up buying the Gregory Zulu which has the TMP web backing and also easy access to the main compartment for my camera gear and hiking gear. It's very comfortable and has lots of pockets and straps. If Osprey made the Atmos with front opening, in addition to the top opening I would have bought the Atmos. I think the suspension system on the Atmos is just a little bit better than the Gregory Zulu, although the Zulu's is pretty comfortable, especially their hip belt. The Atmos is a great pack and for most people it will work well, but for me and what I needed I had to pass.
Just picked up the Aether 85L Plus a few weeks ago. Doing a two day 23 Mile hike this weekend to test out! I see some differences on the 65L compared to the 85L Plus. The brain is clipped onto the bag in the front and the back, makes it a lot easier to take off, rain fly is on the bottom instead of the top, it has two separate long pockets on the sides of your front rain gear pocket, and it has the store on the go trekking poles. A comparison review would be neat to see!
@@enterprise8979 I find it very comfy and super adjustable. It does need some good amount of weight to really get suited on you, like it's actually more comfortable with 30+ lbs than lighter.

Hi Chris - you might have reviewed an older (2021?) version of the atmos. Mine bought end of 2022 has a rain cover included (in the bottom section) and perhaps more importantly the main compartment can not only be accessed from the top but also from both sides via zippers near its frame. What’s missing in the newer edition is the flap to seal the top of the backpack once the removable top lid is detached. Fun to see how you almost disappeared between both bags. 😂
My biggest gripe with the Atmos is the stiff hipbelt. I struggle pulling it around when getting back on trail, or just pulling out of my car. Can't stand it. Had an Osprey Zenith, much like the Aether and the belt was much more forgiving. I don't have a solution........
Could watch reviews all day but you really don't know which one is for you til you put them both on. I personally thought the aether carried and felt better so that made my mind up.
I really enjoy your videos. Your passion and attitude really shines through in your reviews. As a fellow gear junkie I share the same excitement. I really love Osprey packs. I opted for the budget Rook 65 and I really love it. It's fairly light and built like a tank. My wife also loves her Renn 50. I believe my next pack will be one of these(unless there is another in the 50-65 L range you would recommend trying out). Thanks again for the video! Happy Trails!
I bought an REI rain cover size large for my Atmos 65L. $35. Atmos is intended to be a hot weather summer backpack whereas the Aether is intended to be a cold-weather winter backpack. More reason to have a rain cover for freezing cold rain, sleet, snow, and hail. Aether has two large straps for snowshoeing or crampons. Atmos has decent hip support so the weight is distributed to backpackers hips instead of neck, shoulders, and back. If you are looking for a smaller version day pack then get the Kestrel for winter and the Stratos for summer day hikes.
Good info...yes the Stratos is a great day pack. Large backpack like features in a day pack...24L is a perfect size. I day hike with a Manta 24 L....Love the suspension. Thanks!
@@basecampchris Yes, my Osprey Manta 24L is ideal for a 2 hour nature walk. I use mine for long walks on the beach or walking around town. I originally bought it for walking around amusement parks.
@@AlexeyDnepr I assume all Osprey backpacks creak. Put sufficient weight or fill them and they start to creak. I have tested the Osprey Atmos, Kestrel, Stratos, and Manta. @@Lassjon I ended up going with the Atmos 65. Both were comfortable but the Atmos felt a little better. Also when I tilted my head back to look up, my head would bump into the top of the pack frame on the Aether.
can u do a review and comparison of the aether plus 60? it has the same daypack as previous ag model. Also they have the stow and go function, dual large zipper on top of the mid access zipper, dedicated rainfly pocket on the bottom and the same mesh pocket on the outside.
I have the previous version of the aether 60 with the day pack lid. It's nice but I think I like the atmos 65 a little better because of the extra pocket. I bought the aether because I got it pretty cheap. The anti gravity works very well. My only complaint is the hip belt digs in a bit. I'm thinking it will eventually break in. I like osprey and I'm very happy with it but it would be nice to try a Gregory just for comparison. I started with a budget pack around $60 it was ok but I wish I would of started at the top. But at least I know the difference. Resale value is good too.
I wish osprey would use blaze orange for a rain cover.. During hunting season you're supposed to wear orange. I bought an aftermarket cover for mine. I wish osprey would have stuck with the day pack lid. The rain cover is not a good substitute.
How do you like backpacking with the all black? I guess my concern would be hiking in the summer months with an all black one. I have a55L on its way:)
I have found many of your videos very helpful. I wanted the Atmos until I saw the Aether while at REI. But after watching this, I think I am going to go with the Atmos. I liked the pockets on the Aether and the large external straps and area over the back compartment. However after watching this video I think the Atmos has a better design. Thanks again for an informative video.
If I have an option to choose between 5.11 Rush 72 or Osprey Atmos 65L for my INCH bug out bag I’ll definitely take atmos 50L or 65L anytime. I’m still debating between 50L or 65L to purchase since I don’t want my bag to be over 45lbs, any help or suggestions will be appreciate it. Overall awesome video!
@@basecampchris I agree. A 50 can be borderline especially on longer trips. I would go for the 65. The prices will be similar, and when it comes to space, it is much better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
The EX is referring the the Extra Large I believe....the Aether comes in 2 sizes S/M (small/ medium) at 65L and the L /XL (large/ extra large ) at 68 L
I have the aether 65 AG and its interesting to see what they removed and what they didn’t! I always try to search the difference. I cant remember if the atmos can take the lid and turn it into a daypack but for some reason on your videos it always seems like the atmos has more cargo space than the aether because of the 2 front pockets
Hi man! Great video! I can't choose between the Aether Plus 70L and the Atmos AG 65L for my trip to Mexico. Which one should I get? I can get the Atmos for just 168 euros and the Aether Plus for 250 euros. Is it worth the extra money for the Aether Plus? A big plus for the 'Aether Plus' is that you can get to the main compartment from the side. On the other hand, the Atmos AG 65 has a lot of great reviews. Thanks in advance!
Yeah that mesh , spending a lot of time in forests , i can imagine picking twigs out of that stuff for hours on end , the aether isnt bad it collects hardly any crud
Hey Chris what size is the new Aether you have there? I wore in a Medium in the old style Aether/Atmos but now they are listed as S/M and L/XL on the new Aether. Cheers,
The Aether can carry a little more weight, the Atmos is more comfortable and breathable, so take your pick, mine choice was the Atmos but both excellent packs. If you need to carry huge loads that are heavy etc I recommend a Savotta jääkäri large or a Mystery ranch 6500 pack.
I gott Intergrated rain cover in my Atmos AG from this year...Maybe i gott lucky and they just changed it to come with a rain cover any ways it is in the top lid for me. 200$. Like so others can see, check before you buy.
It's a shame they seem to be marketing one for men and one for women. They both seem like fine unisex packs people should be selecting based on the features they want rather than gender. Thanks for another great video, Chris.
I thought the same until I learned the women's version straps are designed differently to better fit female body types...mainly in the chest and torso area. You can clearly see the difference in the shape of the harness if you compare them side by side. After learning this was the case, and heard reviews by women who experienced much better fit and comfort, I was quite impressed with Osprey's innovation.
Good break down jetjock...they do really dial in the fit/ comfort and quality for men and woman. That's why their the best in my opinion. Thanks Arbie812

Great video, Chris. The deciding factors for me were the multiple access points to the main compartment and the removable daypack of the Aether. Have to ask though, is this Aether you have a non-AG version? Because the one I bought (link below) has the AG suspension system. Had no idea it came in another variety. This Ather seems just like the AG version but with less features! No flap, no daypack. Maybe another video of both AG varieties? Looking forward to it! www.amazon.com/Osprey-AG-60-Backpacking-Backpack/dp/B07QG5WJB1
Yes...a little confusing the Aether AG comes in the 60/70 and 85L with the Anti Gravity and the removal top lid that converts to a day pack....where as the Aether 65 has a Air scape back panel and no day pack added.
@@basecampchris You did a review on the Aether with the AG system, which sold me on the pack. Gotta admit, you have a certain love for the Atmos that almost got to me but the Aether won me over. can u do a review and comparison of the aether plus 60? it has the same daypack as previous ag model. Also they have the stow and go function, dual large zipper on top of the mid access zipper, dedicated rainfly pocket on the bottom and the same mesh pocket on the outside.
We're can I find one like the black one !? Could you send me one ? Lol for an good ol street kid who loves to walk the hills in the woods !!
which one do you like better if i will give you...??
Love the day pack top lid...good option. Also yes, orange is a good safety color especially in deer country. Which is everywhere..
What a step backwards from Osprey on the new Aether... Previous model was far better. Great little review.
Thanks...I still like the Atmos.
Great review thanks Chris
Thanks for watching!
Aether 65 trekking pole holder’s included?
Yes only behind the bag.
Very welcome/ Glad that was helpful....if you can at REI put them side by side...check em out... but that said I do prefer the Atmos.
I wish Aether with Atmos suspension system.
I like the 65L myself as the extra room means more options...I can always pack more if I want or not. 50L I feel limited.
@@basecampchris I agree. A 50 can be borderline especially on longer trips. I would go for the 65. The prices will be similar, and when it comes to space, it is much better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Hi, is there big differens in comfort when it's on your back? Thank you for great comparison!
I’ve felt like the water reservoir, if used, in the atmos just takes up too much space and I can’t fit gear in
Thank you, Chris 😊
what is difference between Aether 65 and the Aether EX 65?
The EX is referring the the Extra Large I believe....the Aether comes in 2 sizes S/M (small/ medium) at 65L and the L /XL (large/ extra large ) at 68 L
Awesome, thank you!!
You're welcome!
Good job on the review!
Thanks!
I receive today an Atmos, but the “up and down” AG doesn’t work.. only one side move.. i’m doing something wrong?
It should work...put equal pressure on the release on both sliders...If it is actually broken, a return or exchange should be in order.
let me know if it is still a problem.
I love my AG 65!
Great Pack!
I learned that i prefer structure less bags with high denier fabric!
Great comparison! Keep it up! Cheers!
I wish Atmos 65 had build-in raincover.
Love the 2 front pockets...it does not convert to a daypack, but is easier to remove with the clips.
Nice review as always.
I appreciate that! Thanks.
what is the weight capacity?
Hey chris would like to know your advice on which one is more preferable by you between osprey's Anti-gravity and Airscape ? Which is good overall?
I prefer the Anti-Gravity as it is a more robust and well designed suspension.
Thanks in advance!
so which one did you choose ?
Very useful video. Thanks
Great video dude, thank you!
Thanks Dan!
Heute Chris
I have an xenith 88. It is too big for me, i think athmos 65 is the right for me
Yes, The Xenith can be more than you need at times...Hang onto it for those week plus trips, though. 65L is the sweet spot for me!
Pretty sad that the top lid can’t convert to daypack like the old aether🥲
You can get the removable brain in the pro version for only 100 more bucks 🙄… probably better to just buy a separate compact day pack at that point.
Thats one thing thats always confused me is all the different names for what looks to be similar packs
Yes...they have so many options and differences for different purposes.
Yeah that mesh , spending a lot of time in forests , i can imagine picking twigs out of that stuff for hours on end , the aether isnt bad it collects hardly any crud
Great review Chris , I think I would lean to the atmos as well .
Thanks Indian Hemlock! It;s been solid for me. Also Heading out on a trip soon!
@@basecampchris great, looking forward to it.!
Hey Chris what size is the new Aether you have there? I wore in a Medium in the old style Aether/Atmos but now they are listed as S/M and L/XL on the new Aether.
Cheers,
That is the M/L...yes, they only have the S/M and M/L Atmos still has the S/M/L
different design, colour, weight/back suspension system so Y have a few differences if y are observant
Maybe the price difference is tied to the lumbar support
good guess. suspension is more robust.
Good info between your fumbling around. 4 stars for the comparison,
5 stars for the humor of your "practicing" doing a comparison video.
LOL...practicing for juggling kangaroos! Keep Hiking!
I bought the aether 65 today 390$ but did they really have to make that rain cover green 🤮🤮
Haha I have aether plus 100l and and they also give a green raincover haha they fail great design with it
The Aether can carry a little more weight, the Atmos is more comfortable and breathable, so take your pick, mine choice was the Atmos but both excellent packs.
@@jetmanwalking That makes much more sense. Thanks for the insight.
Good break down jetjock...they do really dial in the fit/ comfort and quality for men and woman. That's why their the best in my opinion. Thanks Arbie812
How old are you Chris?
I am 58 and will NOT stop hiking! Thanks 4 Asking! ( I sound like an Old Buzzard But to be Honest I don't feel that way )
@@basecampchris are you American?
Why do all Osprey bag names sound like members of the Three Musketeers?!
I have the ATMOS AG 65
Had mine since 2016.
@@basecampchris 2020 and kicking xD, oh by the way, I could not find a way to adjust the gravity system like you do in the video !
best video ,details.
Ohh Thanks! Yes - similar packs and yet not...
👍👍
I’m in the minority, I’m sure, but I prefer Aether over Atmos, with it’s comfort and differing features
If I buy a black bag, I don't want a green rain cover.
I wanted a green bag, I'd buy a green bag.
Is really hard to make choice between these two ...
Please lower the music volume
Sure! BCC

Lol, this video made it harder for me to decide which bag. I think I'm leaner towards the Atmos, the colours are awful though. Blue, red and gray? Bleh.
Yeah...you'd think they would give you a few more color options...with how popular the Atmos is...Thanks Burnt!

*ul is what meant
I just had to backtrack when you said a $270 backpack does not come with a rain cover 🤦♂️ whoa!
I bought an REI rain cover size large for my Atmos 65L. $35. Atmos is intended to be a hot weather summer backpack whereas the Aether is intended to be a cold weather winter backpack. More reason to have a rain cover for freezing cold rains, sleet, snow, hail.
Yes - good call. Still good to have a rain cover for any pack.
@@basecampchris For sure, especially considering this is a premium product with a premium price tag
Different needs!
Turns out that one was discontinued at the end of 2020 and this new one was introduced as the 2021 model. How do you think the Airscape system fares against the AG?
