Have you ever thought of using a rear mount boom mower? I've used them and instead of having to replace all of the flails all you have to do is sharpen the blades when they get dull or flip them over since they are double sided.

i guess its what your used to. The hedge trimmer was a left hand one when we got it so i never gave it much thought. its the best way to face when your trimming the roadside hedges as your driving in the same direction as the traffic
