I produced this video for instructional use within the Hunters Education class I teach. It touches on the basics of survival shelter construction and fire reflection principles.
Man, that's a very labor intensive shelter! Obviously trees are a renewable resource but the amount of time and work that goes into such a shelter seem formidable. It wouldn't be worth it to me unless I were going to be staying in the same location for a few days.
That is a nice emergency shelter and you are prepared for a longer stay if you had to. I like the way you designed it and will remember that when I decide to go camping.
nice video. just found your channel. loved the beast snowblower vid. gotta have one of those. was camping up there last summer off the trans Labrador hwy. great country nice people. keep em coming ! its gonna be a long winter here in northern maine.
Wow! Camping up here? Amazing hey? Small world no doubt. Were you on motorbike or otherwise Car/truck? We have a lot of people motorbike through with their tents. Nice to hear from you 👍
Using the knife spine to strike sparks saves the sharpened blade edge. Gather three times as much tinder as you think you'll need, and you still won't have any to waste ...
Thanks! This is an excellent video about how to survive in a life and death situation. -14 below with a wind chill isn't about recreation or convenience. It's either you or a tree, such as spruce boughs. Some people's outdoor reality is a youtube screen.
Last year for xmas i noticed the way xmas trees were wrapped with a nylon mesh would be a great way where using 5 or 6 trees would be plenty for an A frame roof the mesh keeps all the branches nice and tight to block out the wind....and with snow falling it would be even more insulsted
Very much liked your video sir!!! Nice to have resources that will grow back in short time. Nice to see people enjoying the outdoors not just closing them off. I subscribed thanks much and blessings 😇🇺🇸
A true survival shelter and the more time and energy you have the denser and warmer it gets. Only materials from the forest and a couple tools. I have to say it's not hard to tell he's been in the woods before.
Chuck all the haters don't get that you/we live in a province the size of California with 1.3% of their population ( that's right 515K not 39.6 M) and is 99% forest, seriously they have no clue. As a matter of fact California has more population than our entire country. People we have tree's growing out of our asses up here cut the man some slack. Great Video buddy
Yeah I let this video/comments run as I’ve found it’s impossible for others to comprehend our outrageously vast forest and how it’s actually over mature in most places in Labrador which actually chokes out future tree growth and diminishes good wildlife habitat. Healthy harvest is the key and the few sticks I cut here are Beyond minuscule in the highest degree.
Actually, despite the comments from Tomas and others, it is a good describing way to get trough a survival issue. Cutting down some trees, and especially THAT kind of trees are not really a damageable cost, for sure. Pines are really able to get it trough without damage ! Besides, considering you're going to step to wilderness, with an axe, I would consider to take along two or three US poncho's and some candles ! You can have a far better result with only a clever pattern to built in your single time shelter. If you know to use an US poncho (or two, three, four, whatever) you can build a secure shelter and get a very warm one by using single candles. I had to try this trick in Germany, during winter 1989, and it was so effective that I had to walk outside of my shelter to get refreshing air ! The fact is, few people are advised how to use that kind of VERY specific poncho's !
Yes I would have cut the nearest trees in a real situation but where this was just a demonstration/trail on my part, then I figured I'd go with the dead/dry trees
A nice video by someone who has built what i would call a realistic emergency shelter i see lots of videos where people have built basically a full blown log cabin , but in real life this one is all you need I would however have laid some good logs on the ground and built the fire on top of that , also the branches above the fire should be cut right back as they will soon dry and burn last thing you need is to wake up in the night with the shelter on fire , as sleep is one of the most important things in a survival situation always a good idea to plan for it.
Would like to see a video at some point on how you choose the equipment you use and where to get it. Also how much is the avg snowfall up there where you are

I suspect in a REAL situation, he would definitely add 2 to 3 times the amount of bows used in the video to show the concept. Sure you are likely adding another 1-2 hours work but the difference it makes is MORE than worth it. Current shelter reduces but doesn't block the wind. If you can see through ANY part of your shelter WIND WILL get through. You need that back wall to be at LEAST 3' thick of bows
I would suggest building against a slope of a mountain, or even putting snow together at about 4 or 6 feet at least, then concentrate your efforts on blocking the other way and the sides
