  • In this video I make an emergency winter shelter in less than an hour - and that's with a fair bit of firewood gathered. Very basic, very simple, and required no special tools!! It's the first time I made one like this - take a peek and throw me your comments!!!
    Thanks for watching

    Finally a good, easy and intuitive design for a snow shelter. There are so many which require special tools and or need like 8 hours to build, while this needs a tarp, a plastic shovel and a tiny folding saw at most.

    That's a great shelter. I live in northern Ontario and spend alot of time in the woods, a shelter like that could save your life. Thanks for sharing.

    Great idea, and well executed. But, from personal experience, a great deal thicker layer of boughs underneath, behind, and beside you will help to keep the cold, cold snow from absorbing all of your body heat. A layer of snow on top will stop your body heat from rising through the ceiling, creating a constant and annoying draft. It doesn't take much airflow to rob you of life saving heat. Good luck and go get 'em!

    • @Mwuhahaha
      @Mwuhahaha 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! I may have misinterpreted what you meant. A layer of snow above will keep heat in but create a draft? So add more branches and leaves on top as well? Or add a layer of snow on top? I don't know anything about being in the wilderness, especially when it is cold like this, but I definitely know moving air steals heat. Could you clarify for me I would certainly appreciate it. Thank you!

    • @johnlshilling1446
      @johnlshilling1446 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Mwuhahaha I meant that no matter how densely you pile the boughs, it is still porous. Heat will rise right through it and the escaping air will be replaced with cold air coming in from the front. That's the breeze. Plus, you have to sleep, and the fire will die down, and no more heat. You'll wake up freezing. All you need is a layer of snow thick enough to stop any air from rising. Of course, too thin of a layer of boughs will allow the snow to melt. THAT'S annoying. Drip, drip, drip. I'm old and disabled now, so I'll probably never winter camp again. But, always carry a few lawn 'n leaf bags in your pocket, auto, or a pack. They'll insure that the snow is insulation, and not drinking water... Good luck.
      PS, I lived quite a while in Alaska. I never noticed, but locals said that some melting of the snow above is inevitable. They say that if the snow is thick enough, it'll soak up the water like a sponge. Makes sense. That's how igloos work and they tell me it gets in the 40s from body heat and a few oil candles. Of course, there's no open door. No fire either. It's a trade off.

    • @JOSHL50
      @JOSHL50 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's the first thing i noticed as I was skipping ahead. you need a bunch of ground cover and, in a pit like this, you also really want to have a really nice thick layer around the sides (on the inside of the pit) before you start putting your top on. the boughs will get you insulation but you want a Lot of it, as much as you can. have a great time winter camping! :)

    This is the same shelter we were taught and made in late 70's Calumet high school ROTC in Upper Michigan on weekend overnight winter survival training. Made them big enough for 2 and slept in them. As I recall we cut the hard snow and placed it over the spruce branch roof to add even more insulating protection. Used C ration cans with a small wad of burning toilet paper and some wax to put enough warmth in the shelter to get out of clothes and into the sleeping bag. Funny part was they gave us tropical sleeping bags with canvas shells to put them in. Good times.

    This video illustrates why it is important to carry a few basic items even though you may be planning only a day hike. Survival situations occur when a person is not expecting them. Carrying a few basic items, such as the ones shown in this video can literally mean the difference between life and death. Nobody plans to fail, but unfortunately, many fail to plan. Great video. Thanks for posting.

      Keep a bugout bag in the car and take it with you whenever you hike. I have a couple of them, and they are seasonally appropriate (spring/summer & autumn/winter).

      I always have a basic pack on me, even day hikes. Little more gear than you "need" but the weather conditions change rapidly in higher elevation mountains.
      Some folks poke fun at me for the gear I always bring along.... up until they need it themselves, lol. I've also saved a few day hikers in some trouble over the years.
      These are the folks that decide on going for a multi-mile excursions into the mountains with nothing but a t-shirt, shorts, flip-flops and maybe a half drunk bottle of water... 🙄
      Beginning of trail: "Only dorks bring all that gear haha"
      Few hours into trail after the weather goes south: "OMG YOU SAVED MY LIFE!!"

  • @gen81465
    @gen81465 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I liked the comment you made about not taking any "full" live trees, and only a few branches from each. Conservation is important, but I think it's worthy to note: in a true emergency situation, if it comes down to either my life or that of a couple trees, then I'll take my chances with the forestry service complaining.

    Lots of good comments on putting more bows and branches in it. Also snow cover on top with a small entrance facing the brush for wind protection. I will add NEVER, NEVER, NEVER put a fire in a snow shelter. It will melt the snow, cause condensation, and make your clothes damp. You could find yourself sitting in a puddle of water in the middle of the night when you need the shelter most. This can kill you in cold weather.
    A good solid snow shelter in the snow safe from the wind can get as warm as +20F to +30F even in zero deg F weather. Your clothes should do the rest. The deeper you go the warmer it gets. Snow is a great insulator. The more the better.

    Make your dug out pit smaller (less air mass so your body can warm the space more) some side insulation, a lot more ground insulation. A tarp over your roof structure that drapes over your entrance for a door, and pile snow on the branches on the roof and you will be surprised how well it can keep you warm. Not like comfortably warm but not dying warm. It also helps to put your pack against the flap door for more insulation there.
    With the addition of the dog it might get you to an okay temperature especially if you make the shelter as short as practical like enough room to climb in and out without disturbing the roof but basically no taller.

    • @harrymills2770
      @harrymills2770 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cut the same amount of pine/spruce branches. Pile them on the tarp. Hop on the pile. Roll up in the tarp. Better yet, roll it up without you in it and pile snow on top. Climb into the middle of the pile. Helps if you don't have flimsy ultralight gear, so the branches won't puncture the fabric, but totally do-able and you'd be like a sled dog in a snowbank.

    Thank you Chuck ! My only suggestion is make it close to 2 person's wide, and rig a way to close off the front as best you can. Lars from survival Russia carries a plastic shovel head and uses a small tree for handle, so he can clear the area down to ground, so he can make Siberian log fire, not worry on snowmelt, or fire sinking in snow in case the shelter needs to become camp for a few days. Plus storage space for more firewood and pack . If wet feet and clothing, a cleaned off area would be good so you can be off the snow as boots and clothing dry. Best thing of this shelter is very adaptable, as emergency use or base for larger camp area. Shovel head make moving snow more efficient, keep you from sweating. Stay safe out there !

    Great shelter! It will definitely work! I wish we could get that much snow here.

      We never have to worry about snow here (which is good and bad!) Thanks for the comment!

      lol, careful what you wish for... I'm in Edmonton AB Canada and we got like 3 feet of it now Drifts as high as 10 ft in places and - 30c to - 45c below zero, expected to last another week... It does look beautiful though... Well worth it...

    nice shelter i would have laid cross branches along a good portion of the roof area incase of heavy snow fall , and also when you dig the hole if you keep your snow shoes on and compress the side walls that firms up the snow until the fire has had chance to ice it over. all in all that will do the job to keep you out the wind for sure .

    Hey Chuck, so happy I saw this video, brings back memories of my time in boy scouts I made this exact shelter for a weekend long trip. Only thing you did different is you made it much deeper and from my experience that was the correct decision!

      It was quite comfortable so I would mimic the same next time for sure. The photographer hey? Sounds interesting! Thanks for watching and I loved your comment as I once too attended Boy Scouts 👍

    I've heard about these shelters, but never seen one in action. Thanks. Good also to see the countryside in Labrador. Many years ago I read a fascinating true account of 3 or 4 guys, including one indigenous Canadian, who were on a canoe adventure and took a wrong turn in Labrador and ended up in a severe survival crisis. At least one of them died. The time period was around 1900 or so. The whole experience may have been serialized in Outdoor Life Magazine, I think. Wish I could think of the name of it.

      I think you are referring to the Hubbard expedition? A great piece of Labrador history. Many trappers and explorers roamed this vast land with little to no navigational equipment or survival gear. It's simply amazing what they accomplished. Good to hear from you and I'm glad you enjoyed the video👍

      @@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors That's it. The Hubbard Expedition. Wish I still had that book. As I recall, the guy with the least amount of gear but the most know-how survived the experience: the indigenous Canadian. ;-)

    I've seen this demonstrated before but in a more restrictive "snow coffin" format. What's nice about this one is the ability to have a fire and custom made recliner lol. Was wondering how that Princess Auto ferro rod would perform on the old man's beard, not bad! With our prevailing winds think I'd try to point the opening east to SE to avoid getting a lung full of smoke. Great idea, double thumbs up.

      Thanks for the view and the comment. Btw I have s bunch of these ferro rods now as they are cheap to buy and work like the charm. 👍
