I really enjoyed watching this peaceful video that made me think, not annoying fake talk just nature and real life. This guy has shown great survival skills and is well organized. There is surprisingly a lot of work involved in sleeping in the wild for only one night. I can only imagine how tough it was for our ancestors. Today majority of people are not aware of how comfortable life they have. It may be a good move to sleep in a wild from time to time just to be aware of how lucky we are.
so true. i went camping a few days ago for 2 nights, completely unplanned. it was so refreshing to be sat there with just one other person, under the stars, with a fire. at one point he left to go grab some more wood and i was just sat alone in the dark keeping the fire going, listening to the sounds, trying to keep warm and honestly, i wasn’t scared at all. it was just peaceful.

I turned 50 just last September. I was talking to my wife just a couple days ago that I woke up one morning reminiscing how grand the 1980s was when I realized that it wasn't exactly "recent", but it is 3 or 4 decades ago. Then I told my wife that I'm getting old too quickly and didn't want to put off things I will regret not doing while I can.

@DJ “Red Port Left Green Stars” hi pal. We holidayed in the US seven years ago and were shocked by the amount and number of street homeless in LA and San Francisco. It’s a shocking state of affairs when political and economic choices lead to such poverty. Are you suggesting that Canada is also following similar policies. Obviously I wouldn’t want to be forced into that but that doesn’t stop me appreciating this man’s ability, skill and choices
I actually did something just like this when my motorcycle died and left me in a mountain pass near dark. Made shelter just like this, only without an axe I had to use smaller limbs I could break by hand. It didn't get below freezing- but then I had no blanket to pad either! These skills are so essential. Instead of nearly dying of hypothermia I spent a very comfortable night. Thank you Boy Scouts and SAR!
I’ve got a sharp little axe and a chainsaw chain with cords attached (makes for a great portable saw in an emergency) stashed in my car, together with 2 warm blankets, matches, etc. just for that eventuality.
That will not be as warm as one might think who has not spent time outdoors in below zero temps... No sir... But ya might live... Now dig a big pit with rocks, build a toasty fire and then bury the hot rocks with 10 inches of dirt. Then build this over ya. The rocks willmstay warm most of the night😉👍
@@VajrahahaShunyata I think that's almost like how they cook whole pigs in Hawaii during a "luau" but the pit of hot rocks (or underground oven) are definitely bigger. Just sharing...😊
I kind of love how understated all the hard work and ruggedness is in this video. "It was very soft" - we're talking outdoor soft, not, "sealy queen mattress soft", but after the hours of work setting up the shelter and cutting, I'm sure it felt amazing! Most people, (including myself) have no true appreciation of the fortitude, (mental and physical) it takes to do something like this and make it look so easy. I loved this video, it shows off your skill and guts without all the usual TH-cam chatter. I deeply appreciate your skill and talents as a woodsman and filmmaker!
I live in Western Australia. It's 19 January 2023, 10:32 pm, the temperature is a balmy 24.6°C and I found that I could not stop watching your video - the psychological 'cooling' effect was extraordinary and quite unexpected (I got rid of air con years ago for environmental reasons). Doing something similar in this environment has its own special challenges but your video has encouraged me to go back to 'roughing it' as I used to when I was a teenager (I'm 70 now), spending my weekends in crude beach shelters, cooking ocean caught fish over foraged firewood and falling blissfully asleep to the sound of the surf - happy days. Thanks!
We're in Rockingham, temp is around 19 deg. The vid reminds me of camping under personal shelters in Bindoon in the 60s with the CMF in August. Not -23C, but cold enough to recommend an overnight fire like the one shown. One man ration packs made it quite liveable.

Thank you for the great work of a small but important time in our life. I'm 76 years old and limited on my abilities now and miss it all. You took me and put me there AGAIN!!
A good bush survival tip for those cold nights: Take a few pieces of stone (preferably VERY dry stone to avoid popping/exploding - round dry granite-type river stones work the best) and lay them around the fire as you cook. An hour before bed, bury a few of them very shallow UNDER your leg and feet-area in your sleeping shelter. They will warm the ground and radiate heat up through the dirt and your pine bedding. Now I understand the ground was likely frozen where you were but I still would have at least tried to dig a shallow rock pit under my sleep area before constructing the shelter. Yeah, it sucks to collect and re-bury them right before bed, but they will throw heat literally all night and your legs and feet won't be cold.
Excellent. No chatter, no wasted motion. Packed with good information, all visually demonstrated. The best video camping I've done in years. Somehow, peaceful and stimulating at the same tiime. Well done, sir.

lol. It IS easy. He has a knife, a saw, an axe, sleeping pad, instant dinner and pepperoni, firestarting materials, a teapot & cooking pot, firestarting materials, tons of wood, warm outdoor winter clothes - and a wooden cup. Anyone could do this.
Wow! One of the best nature videos I’ve enjoyed in a long time here. Just keeping it simple by not speaking, and let sounds of nature do most of the talking. I felt I was there man! Also amazing camera work, simple but you covered best angles. The shelter looks so cozy and warm, thank you for sharing, such a relaxing and calming video.
I think I would cut much more insulation pine fronds and sleep inside them. The open air is deadly. And I would place the log store close by where I sleep ready to top up the fire from my bed.
This brings back memories. When I was 15, my older brother and I did a winter survival weekend led by a very experienced naturalist. It was in southern NH and it got down to -21 F. We did the same thing, built lean-tos, cut firewood and just relaxed after a very long day. It was the most comfortable night i had camping in the winter. It stated a tradition that was done at least once a winter. Thanks for posting. I'm sending it on to my brother.
This brings back the memories of camping out, being on the road, really making any place home. It is surprising and satisfying as to what you can do creating small comforts that you really cannot take for granted. They lift the spirits and give you a story to remember for life. It's damn good to see there's others out there keeping the faith on the road. Take care of yourself and nature , maybe some up and coming kids can pick up a few tips from you. A great video. Thank you.
I have slept in the wilderness in a bag during the summer when I was muuuuuuch younger. Being outdoors makes one appreciate the little things and the silence in the video is awesome. Thank you!
Winter is the best time to camp. No bugs, no uneccessary sweating, and the perfect excuse to built a fire. Nothing compares to being in a snug warm shelter with the snow falling and the wind howling. It's the best sleep i ever get.

Very interesting and even relaxing to watch! No commentary or background music, just the sounds of the forest, your activity and the crunching of snow ☺
It's what we called a bough whiffen back home in NL, Canada, in the 70's. We had a walk of 4 or 5 miles into our old log cabin. So over the years we'd built a few of those when the weather would change on us along the trail. We used them over and over, as needed, until the needles fell off the branches and we'd replace them. We made our bed out of spruce boughs rather than foam, which wasn't as available back then. A good Arctic sleeping bag, good for -40F, made all the difference. Great educational video. I haven't seen something like this in a long time.
I had one of those arctic bags for a trip to Hill End in Australia's east country. It only got down to about - 4 C which meant I was overheating like crazy. They're basically a thermos you can get inside lol

I did a wilderness thing in Utah a couples times and the nostalgia from this is wild. Didn’t get as cold but felt like it and I’ve never been as grateful for a meal after making your own fire or slept as well either from backpacking all day. Good times.

Thank you for building a practical actually useable shelter. I see other channels build crazy things with smokey chimneys that will kill you with smoke inhalation, or floors that will rot, or take WAY too much time to build. Anyway, it is highly refreshing to see an actually good survival shelter that is quick enough and practical enough to be useful.
@Bob Leton no. Not ignorant at all. This is a practical shelter for IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY USE. While you can definitely build something like what you're talking about, it takes a lot of time and you'd need something like this first. Just so you don't die on the first night.
No idea why this was recommended to me, but it just derailed everything I was doing and I watched entire thing and subscribed. I feel so at peace now. Exactly what I needed.
I remember doing the wilderness survival merit badge for Boy Scouts, I had to built a a shelter like this and sleep in it overnight, when I woke up the next morning I was freezing cold and covered in tons of bug bites!
Yep! I remember I built mine lower to to the ground and got as much insulation as possible. I think at that temperature you have to do the lean to thing with the reflective fire 🔥
I love camping. I love hiking. I go by myself without anybody but me and my dog. but this is so refreshing to see. We grew up poor my dad lived in west Virginia. We stayed in a teepee for months in the middle of winter and you would sweat at night that fire got so warm. it's funny tho now I think I'm spoiled because I have a sleeping bag and a dog. None the less great video. If I were ever to be stranded I'd hope I'd be buddies with somebody like you.
I love how you made your own shelter out of spruce branches, instead of using a commercial tent. Totally awesome survival skills!!! I feel I've accomplished something when I can spend the night in a tent with my Coleman catalytic heater, and here you are, making something out of nothing. Awesome!!!
Tents are horrible things they get wet you have to mess about with pegs & lines, you cannot get the benefits of the fire with the nylon nightmare that is a tent.
Oh yeah , time for some excellent shelter videos from Kusk bushcraft . Simple but yet effective ( and some good food and black tea . Yep , I enjoy black tea at times , too ) . Thanks for bringing us along , Kusk bushcraft
Nice bushcraft and survival shelter building in difficult weather condition and in an area devoid of any human settlement. Beautiful sojourn - peaceful, lonesome... 👍💖
WOW!!! That is just so awesome. I'm 69 and have never been camping. I may just pitch a tent in my backyard surrounded by a privacy fence and alot of bushes and trees, make a fire, and have the time of my life.
Tip for bedding: spruce have spiky tipped needles that you can roll in your fingers, fir have rounded tipped needles that are flat and you can’t roll in your fingers. If you don’t want to be poked, try finding fir trees.
Good advice. Sadly, there's barely any fir trees in this area. The forests are pretty much all spruce and pine. Occasionally I'll find the odd Douglas Fir tree, but they are rare. When I used to live close to the foothills there were lots of fir trees and I loved to make my beds from them. They are very comfy. Thanks for watching, happy trails!
Outstanding video!! Your cinematography is exemplary! Many of us realize and appreciate the incredible effort it takes in setting up your camera angles, editing, etc. It does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank you for taking the time to make such a great video.
I almost felt like I was here, probably because I wanted to be here. He gets several hours of not having any people around him outdoors, I wish I could get two minutes. Excellent video.
And it took minimal energy to set up. A lot of people bushcraft whole cabins without accounting for the thousands of irreplaceable carbs they just burned up
He did a really good job on his shelter. I had to do this for cold weather survival school in the army while stationed in Alaska. They made us use parachutes and wood to make a small shelter then cover it with snow for insulation. Lastly we lit a candle inside to keep us warm but we couldn’t sleep with it on. I much rather have this type of shelter though. Well done!
Just enjoyed watching this video. The pipe was a wonderful touch, I carry a pipe and some tobacco in a vacuum sealed container in my bug out bag and get home bag. It's for no other reason then just comfort. I figured if things got bad, I was in the middle of a bad situation, a pipe always settles my mind a little bit.
Excellent video! I live in Colorado and the view in my backyard has the view of the majestic Rocky Mountains (RM), just 5 miles from the foothills. This video actually held my interest because it's all show and no talk at all, I actually learn the best this way! I have a hearing loss so the simple "subtitle" on the top is quite helpful to give me an idea so it's definitely appreciated. I love camping and the last time I camped was just outside Strawberry, AZ when I lived in Phoenix, AZ (2000-2006). So it's overdue as I truly miss camping. Since I moved to Denver, and bought a house there's no excuse for me to not go out into the mountains and enjoy what the nature has to offer! I have obtained additional camping supplies/tools since I relocated to CO a bit over 4 years ago. This year, I will definitely make the time to camp out, minus the snow, but the ideas shown here would be a good reminder. Thank you for sharing!
I love how to made sure you targeted the clusters instead of finding the best tree possible. When I was in Boy Scouts my troop was very strict about being ethical with wild life and nature, and this was one of the ways we were taught to find wood when we needed larger trunks.
Great video! As a person who has never camped in the snow, i wàs amazed at how much wood was needed to last the night. Loved the shelter...haven't made one like that since I was a kid 😊
Yeah that is a beautiful sound but I think the best sound on earth is scratching my window scraper across my frozen windshield at 5am just to make a small spot I can see through enough to head to work while my windshield de fogs
I agree with others. Excellent video! No endless chatter, just calm tranquility and a lot of useful information. I often hike in the mountains where I live but have never stayed the night. I might try it sometime.
Sleep Mats or roll mats as I know them are an absolute godsend - beginners and inexperienced campers take note! Never leave for a trip without one. Second in line of importance to a good mat is of course a fine pipe to smoke! Great video ;-)
This brings back memories from our SERE training 😅 we built something very similar but larger in size so it could fit 5 guys x2 and on the middle we placed our campfire so that it would warm up both of our camps 😁 "great memories"
I was absolutely mesmerized watching this. It's and educational and asmr at the same time. You even planned for which direction the winds were predominantly blowing away from your shelter!
It's interesting to see how humidity affects temperature so much. I'm in the Military in the UK and once it's - 4 centigrade you really feel it. Usually because it's wet and raining as well. -22 freezes and gets rid of any moisture in the air.
I live in a remote place in the Carpathian mountains. -20 C feels better that 0-1 C with high humidity. When you look at the thermometer and see -25 C, you get chills, but once you go out, you realize that this freezing temperature doesn't feel that bad. That humidity though, you feel it in your bones
This is THE best video I have seen for sleeping overnight in the forest in the dead of Winter! Why? Because it is very simple, anyone can do this, you don't need a lot of supplies, this is a true survival video if it ever comes down to the basics. Very very well done, thank you so much for posting! Greetings from Canada, where camping in the winter is not out of the ordinary!

I found this informative, but very relaxing, due to no music and just the sound of nature. I love the channel and it has become a staple of my week now. Sitting down with my little dog in an evening with a cup of coffee and watching your videos has become a comfort.
This was everything I'd hoped it would be. No music, no commentary, and just enough production quality to be a pleasant viewing without wondering too much if something, or someone other than a tripod was holding the camera. Thanks for this. Really.
I like the 2 ridge pole structure, the extra room looks great without creating too big a void to try and warm. Looks like you had a great trip! Thanks for taking us along and I look forward to your next adventure. Good to see the pipe out again too!
The two ridge poles worked quite well. If I were to make it again I would make a few tweaks to give it a little more head room but other than that it was a great little shelter and held heat from the fire quite nicely. Thanks for watching!
The branches are effort that accomplishes little, maybe some on the ground, a nylon tarp that probably could be stuffed into the tea pot could do the same thing. I suspect little sleep was done and it was mostly a napping tending of the fire night, that fire is good for a few hours.

I did that when my girlfriend secretly ate my snickers.
How about planting one??

Thanks!
Is air con bad?
@@beanlegume9965 the 2 things I can think are 1 it uses electricity, 2 it contains refrigerants which are harmful for people, animals, and the air.
We're in Rockingham, temp is around 19 deg. The vid reminds me of camping under personal shelters in Bindoon in the 60s with the CMF in August. Not -23C, but cold enough to recommend an overnight fire like the one shown. One man ration packs made it quite liveable.

So pleased with your video!! Finally someone who cuts enough wood for the night it really is all about preparation ❤
Great tip - thanks !!
Also some thermoses with hot water makes some good times in the sleeping bad

The two ridge poles worked quite well. If I were to make it again I would make a few tweaks to give it a little more head room but other than that it was a great little shelter and held heat from the fire quite nicely.

@@KuskBushcraft the smaller space would work to your advantage because there's less space to heat and fewer chances of gaps to let heat escape.
The branches are effort that accomplishes little, maybe some on the ground, a nylon tarp that probably could be stuffed into the tea pot could do the same thing. I suspect little sleep was done and it was mostly a napping tending of the fire night, that fire is good for a few hours.
