BMW 2002 full renovation. Märklin No. 1819. Recreating the trunk. Diecast model toy.

The German company Märklin produced this BMW 2002 model in 1969. It is on a scale of 1:43. It is characterized by very high precision and contains many details. I have been trying to buy this model for a long time because it is quite rare and valued among collectors. I once had a car like this in real life and I liked it very much. My copy had a broken front plastic wheel and was missing the rear trunk lid. In the video I showed quite precisely how such a flap can be made from PLA. Additionally, I installed it in such a way that it can also open. I copied the damaged wheel and cast it from polyurethane resin, which I immediately tinted black. Märklin produced unified boxes for its models. She stuck stickers with the model number and pattern on their sides. it's the same Märklin brand making the famous model railway stuff. they used to do these models for their 00 gauge (1:42.5 scale) railways first, later for collectors. I think all lines were cancelled around 75 or 76.

Another superb restoration, and I particularly liked how you were able to recreate an opening bootlid, that would stay open. The only thing I would personally have wanted to do differently, was the hubcaps: Märklin's hubcaps were very characteristic and made them instantly recognizable from all other models, so although the ones you made, turned out really nice, they also obscured some of the "soul" of the model.
I always liked the Märklin models, their range included a lot of models the other makers skipped (for example I have an Audi 100 C1 Coupé), but they're not very easy to find, as you also mention in this clip.

Cóż... Märklin budował nie tylko modele kolejek, ale także modele odlewane 1/43. (Sam wciąż posiadam Capri Mk I 😉 )
W latach 70. modele te kosztowały około 4,- D-Mark, dziś są prawie bezcenne 😁.
Świetna robota Paul, BMW znów wygląda jak nowe, a naprawa pokrywy bagażnika to pierwsza klasa, jakby nigdy jej nie brakowało (świetny pomysł ze stalową sprężyną) 🤩
Szczególnie podoba mi się autentyczna kratka i szczegółowe tylne światła.

Well... Märklin did not only build model railways, but also 1/43 die-cast models. (I still own a Capri Mk I myself 😉)
In the 70s these models cost about 4,- german Marks, today they are almost priceless 😁
Well done Paul, the BMW looks like new again and the repair of the boot lid is first class, as if it had never been missing (Great idea with the steel spring) 🤩
I especially like the authentic grille and the, detailed, tail lights.

Tja... Märklin baute nicht nur Modelleisenbahnen, sondern auch 1/43 die-cast Modelle. (Besitze selbst noch einen Capri Mk I 😉)
In den 70ern kosteten diese Modelle etwa 4,- D-Mark, heute sind sie fast unbezahlbar 😁
Tolle Arbeit, Paul, der BMW sieht wieder aus wie neu und die Reparatur des Kofferraumdeckels ist erstklassig, als hätte er nie gefehlt (Tolle Idee mit der Stahlfeder) 🤩
Besonders gefallen mir der authentische Kühlergrill und die, detaillierten, Rücklichter.

This lamp is made of metal, but watch my video about the renovation of this model, where I made such a lamp from a diode by embedding it in resin, it will look great and you won't have to buy it

ah, I remember having one of these models as new. it eventually got heavily repainted, bumpers missing, and so on... I used to be an angry child in times. :/ I eventualy resold it, maybe someone restored it or needed the spares, I dunno.
I've never seen those axle connectors, I wonder what's the reason behind them. also, those fingers that hold the interior in place used to break off in the 80's already, too. I guess they were never meant to be re-bent again?
anyway, great work, especially on the rear lid and it's hinge. these hinges work well unless something breaks off... XD oh, and I remember that mine used to drag it's butt as well, and others did it when new, too. something didn't work as intended with the suspension... or one has to clean out the trunk space again. :)

Yep, Märklin still produces. But mainly railway models in 1/32, 1/87 and 1/220.
Die-cast models (to my knowledge) no longer.
But there are die-cast models from WIKING in 1/87 to go with Märklin railways.

as Sparky said. Märklin used to do a line of rather simple models (no windows, no interior, aluminium wheels with rubber tyres, the same way Dinky started) for their 00 gauge railways, then started to do these very detailed models. I think they started by 68 or so, calling that line of models "rak", an abbreviation for "Richtige Auto Klasse". the models were very accurate and had every lid and door opening. this model line lasted until 75 or 76, around that time they vanished from the catalogues. every now and then they are resurrected, but only in silver, different wheels, and some details were omitted. for example the Porsche 911 suddenly had no T-roof insert and no door cards and side windows anymore... same with the 914. :(
