Porsche 911 Targa broken in half. Märklin No. 1800. Full restoration of the cast model.

I received this Porsche 911 Targa from a friend who, knowing it was a very rare model, gave it to me to try to repair. The Porsche was cracked in half because its body was held together only by the side sills, which were broken. I made the appropriate repair and replaced the missing parts. Among other things, a set of windows and an overlay roof. The Märklin company is famous for models with very high quality casting. Unfortunately, in this case I believe that the designers made a mistake. They should additionally strengthen the convertible body to prevent these models from cracking. This could be done by making an additional truss in the chassis or by omitting the opening doors. As usual, I created a box for the set that is very characteristic of this company. Maestro! What a Herculean project this was! Marklin's frame design seemed to be flimsy if kids were ever meant to play with this model! Your re-construction of the door sills, glass, and roof panel demonstrate why you are the brightest star in the firmament of Die-Cast Restorers anywhere! wow, what a repair... no idea how I would have done it, but your method did work, after all. great work! :D
if I recall right, the body would sit on the baseplate around A- and B-frame, and I guess someone stepped on the bodel squeezing the rear part wide until it snapped over the base, and broke the doorsteps. it would also explain the broken windshield, maybe the targaroof was still on. but I know what you mean, the body could have used stronger doorstep sections. maybe Märklin relied too much upon their hard zinc alloy?

I would love to see more Märklin RAK series restorations: Audi 100, Audi 100 Coupé S, Ford Capri, VW 1600, VW K70, BMW 2002, ... they had many nice models.

Jako dzieciak miałem 911 930 w takim kolorze, może ciut bardziej w brązowe złoto wpadał, no i był coupe.. no i było w skali... 1:24, może 1:22 (nie pamiętam, miałem wtedy 3 lata). Ale doprowadziłem go do podobnego stanu. Spadła z balkonu na 3 piętrze w bloku. Niestety w wyniku upadku stracił dach i mama wyrzuciła go do śmieci 😢, bo bała się, że się pokaleczę. To była chyba pierwsza zabawka jaką pamiętam ❤

Hiya Paul! I have watched almost every one of your restoration videos and they are my absolute favorites here on TH-cam. Well illustrated, clear, informative and really great subtitles to watch when volume needs to be low.
I'm here in the US and can remember playing with some matchbox cars in the late 1970's. Corgi and Dinky unfortunately werent as available here when I was a kid.
I am guessing you are in located in the Czech Republic or Poland? I am curious if you have a hige collection of these cars as a museum in your house or do yo then resell them?
I'd love to send you some cars or some useful supplies you can use to further your progress. My wife and I have a running bet that you are a graphic designer or computer technician! Nie wiedziałem , że Marklin robił również resoraki...Sądziłem , że to wyłącznie pionier i solidny gigant modelarstwa kolejowego. Człowiek uczy się całe życie. P.S. dziękuję bardzo. jeśli chodzi o opakowania, to mam taką metodę że wielkość opakowania określam po wielkości modelu, bo wystarczy zmierzyć rozstaw osi w posiadanym modelu a następnie ściągnąć żądane zdjęcie z internetu, zeskalować w programie graficznym tak aby rozstaw osi modelu znajdującego się na pudełku w miał identyczną odległość jak ten który posiadamy i długość pudełka oraz jego szerokość oblicza się sama. pokazałem dokładnie ten tok postępowania przy renowacji Forda Capri Dragster firmy Corgi w jednym z ostatnich filmów. Pozdrawiam serdecznie

Interesting, and good work. Early cars had silver targa bars and aluminum engine lid grills. If it was a 1967-68 targa, those had soft rear windows out of cloth with a plastic inset rear window.

Like you, I find it quite insane that Märklin made this model so flimsy, I mean, what were they thinking? It would be one thing to make a modern model for adult collectors like this, but this is supposed to be a toy! No wonder they're rare, I can imagine that most of them didn't last long, and most people wouldn't keep a model that has literally broken in two!
