Great videos! I got a CMX450 that I’m going to attempt starter clutch. Would you be able to give dimensions of engine stand you built and any other info on the build? I’m on rebel forum under same name. Thanks

Hey. Thank you. Not many videos of them out there on TH-cam. I’m sorry I don’t have the dimensions because I took it apart. It was a simple build I just measured the the top of the engine and made the stand by those dimensions. You’re going to be working on the engine upside down. Measure the top of the engine and go from there. Your going to have to loosen the motor mounts to get the middle cylinder head bolts out. They are long and they will hit the frame. You’ll have to maneuver the engine to get the middle bolts out.
Do you have the free manual? If not here it is:

I got most of the parts I needed from cmsnl, Partzilla, and eBay. Cms/Partzilla both have part diagrams that are extremely helpful for the fix. You’ll need a nice place to work on it with a lot of light. Once you dig into it it’s pretty simple. This was the first motorcycle engine I ever split the cases on. When you have the engine on your stand… you can do what I did and get a ratchet strap and hook it to the engine and your ceiling / rafters and pull the top case up. Instead of prying on anything of the engine. That idea I had worked fantastic. I also watched a lot of videos on cb360/cb350 tear downs and rebuilds. They helped a lot. Specifically “Saturdays wrench” channel on his cb350 rebuild

@@jamesa6272 great advice. This is the first case crack. I have a Clymer and the service manual. I’m pretty good with instructions and I’ll just take it slow. I’m not sure yet what gaskets parts I need. I figured I’ll order once it’s apart. I have another bike for daily. I’ve got a garage with light and space. Here’s the bike last week after a carb rebuild.

@@sacksofphones I’m sure you’ll get it done. I literally went into that engine blind. Everyone had their own opinion on what the clunking was when I asked. No one suggested the starter clutch. I was able to find that out on my own. But it needed to be tore down to find the problem. Other then that your on a hamster wheel trying to chase down every possible thing it could be from the outside of the engine. There were no videos at all on TH-cam showing the internals of the engine when I did it.

I have a 86 rebel 450 and it’s my first bike I used it a couple of times and I believe my starter clutch went out because starter makes noise but won’t crank. I’ve never working on motorcycles before should I do it my self or take it to a shop

Well. If your mechanically inclined and have the tools it could be an option to do it yourself. Problem is getting the parts. All the shops I called and went to said they wouldn’t even touch it. So your option may be the do it yourself. You’ll have to split the cases and see what’s going on if the starter clutch is your problem. Are you a member of the rebel forums? That would be a good place to start. Tell them your problems and see what they say the problem is.
