When I was 23, in July 1970, I went to Denver as an amatuer bronc rider from B.C. Canada. I got a permit to ride in certain rodeos.
I got a list of the next rodeos coming up, and I decided to go to Kansas City. I took the train that night out of Denver across Kansas.
The next day I went down to the Rodeo Grounds and paid my entry fee. The next day I checked to see what horse I had for the first performance. Back then my name was Warren Brass, and when I checked the sheet for the saddle broncs, there was my name next to Jesse James. I ask an older cowboy who worked there, if it was the famous horse. "Yes it sure is he said" I couldn't believe it.
My first Rodeo in the U.S.A. and I drew the horse I used to see pictures of in the bunkhouse, when we would get the latest Rodeo Sports news, and look at all the results and pictures. That evening I got on him, and out he came just like in the pictures. Straight up and high. I kept on going higher, right over his head and staight into the dirt. facefirst. I'll never forget spitting out that dirt, and feeiing so humiliated. Later that December I got to work the calf shoots at the finals in Oklahoma City, and seen him there.

Saw Jesse buck the first time at Independence Missouri around 1963 , he lost a lot of guys at the gate the way he blew out of the chute, one of the greats.

Yeah! You don't hear much about these great bucking horses back in the day anymore.. Thanks for the information.. And Ike Sankey became one of the best riders also. Along with Lyle Sakey. Cool video!

Wow, why do you think Ted Moomaw has the incorrect story? I guess you wouldn't know. Did you tell him what you know of the horse? Important bronc. Great pictures.

@@pedroh.appaloosa2105 Did you ever find out any more about Jesse James? Great video. I have a lot of old rodeo postcards. A lot of the broncs aren't flanked. Would love to get some from the '60s

@@lynnehuff9659 what breed were the bucking horses from the 1920s and 1930s?

@@pedroh.appaloosa2105 They weren't of any specific breed. Spoiled saddle horses, or horses bad to buck. This is from what I can tell. Feek Tooke started around 1948 breeding half Shire horses that became the seed stock for horses bred to buck. This program had taken off by the 1960's. I think you would enjoy "Tooke Bucking Horses"and the trailer for" Feek's Vision". This Ted Moomaw series is great. As far as your question about the broncs of the 1920s and 1930s, I can tell you that a wide assortment of horses were used.
