    Don't Charge Your A/C Till You Check This!!
    In this video I fix an issue I was having with my GMC Envoy air conditioning system. While most of the time the a/c works fantastic, I was having a peculiar issue where the compressor would shut down for no good reason. Upon some investigation I came upon what's called the low pressure switch. This typical GM air conditioning pressure switch monitors the refrigerant pressures and if there's a problem it'll shut down the compressor in order to protect it. You can imagine, if this part malfunctions, the compressor will act irrationally. This irrational behavior is what I think was happing to my system. Those it wasn't very often, it seemed to happen at the worst times. I swapped the pressure switch for a brand new GM ACDelco unit and so far we've not experienced the issue again.

    I've had issues on my '02 Blazer with the low side Schrader port sticking open, causing me to loose full charge. On the car's I've owned I've never had a pressure switch fail (I'm sure now that I've said that it'll fail lol). Good to know you can just unscrew those, I've always thought you had to vacuum the refrigerant and then replace it, vacuum the system down and then fill it back up, but this is good to know for the future!

    • @MN2_Kevin_Hill_1970
      @MN2_Kevin_Hill_1970 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You do have to remove all the freon replace the part then vacuum the system down and recharge on most vehicles. His vehicle is probably the only one I've seen like that.

      So for anybody reading this later, they're talking about systems that don't have a Schrader valve. You should absolutely check if your ac system specifically has a Schrader valve before doing this yourself because in some cars you do need to evacuate all of the refrigerant and recharge it after, because it will escape if it doesn't have a valve. It's not only in new vehicles but different manufacturers started putting them in in different years. Do your research and be mindful that I think they can be added on to some systems, and there are similar valves on other parts of some cars, so finding a replacement valve doesn't guarantee your CURRENT **ac** system has one installed. It is not at the end of the world if you make a mistake and refrigerant escapes, but it's really bad for the environment (and therefore YOU) so if you are wrong just move away from the car and return after it leaks out. I do not recommend doing this without breathing and eye protection personally just Incase, but that's me having family and friends in HVAC and knowing little enough about cars to be cautious.

    • @garycook5125

      @@dabeersboys I was only able to find a high pressure switch (mounts above engine), but could find no one that had a low side switch (mounts similar to one in video). It's been a year, so I should try to locate one, again. Replacing the one switch didn't solve the problem. I suspect it's the low side switch that's acting up. For the first 10 minutes while outside temperature is high, it cools properly, then air gets hot out of AC vents. On an overcast, cool day, (or on a cool night), the AC runs perfectly, never starts blowing hot air. So I believe it's a switch related problem; the unit makes very cold air when it keeps running.

    • @dabeersboys
      @dabeersboys 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @garycook5125 awesome. I was looking at mine and I was only able to find the one. When facing the truck, left front side. When I search for parts online there is only the one part that shows up. So if there is two, they must be the same part.

My wife picked it up, and I'll install it tomorrow. This problem has plagued me since 2007 (I've been too tolerant). I'm pretty anxious to see if it works. If clutch cycles on and off it’s a good sign the Freon is low small amounts do leak out over time. If nothing happens but the clutch works jumping out the clutch relay then it’s probably a bad AC pressure switch the PCM won’t ground the clutch relay or the cooling fans relays if the pressure switch isn’t sending out the voltage the pcm wants to see

    I have an 01 marquis, my accumulator cylinder is similar to this gm. I recently swapped everything and hoses but the switch as I lost the new one I ordered. I recently charged it, pressure held for less than 30 min. I checked the lines and they are tight.
    Bought another can of r134a, charged it, drove it, checked the engine. I heard hissing by the accumulatior and noticed a spray leak where the switch bolts on, I checked for tightness which is t was, then removed it- hissing stopped.
    Im quite sure I isolated the leak to a $15 cycle switch which comes as a relief. Im ordering another.

      There is a restrictor in the line with a super fine mesh screen. There are 2 types these days, an expansion valve, and an orifice tube with a screen. If those get stopped up, which is common on higher mileage cars, they block the line and need to be changed.
      A shop can diagnose it easy. Put the gauges on and tell you exactly what it’s doing. Finding an honest shop is the hardest part.
      They sell a complete kit, which is my preferred way to go. Compressor, drier, orifice tube , oil. I do my own because I have the gauges , pump and and everything. You can change all the parts then take it to be vacuumed and charged. Then you’re all new.

      I have (or had) that exact same issue w the exact same vehicle. "Oil pressure low. Please turn off vehicle." on the dash?? I dug and dug trying to find the problem. Eventually an O2 sensor crapped out and went into limp mode. Since replacing that I haven't had it stall out. But, I don't think it was the root cause. It still drives sluggishly and doesn't get very good acceleration.
      Also had to replace a low beam headlight relay around that time.
      One thing I found was the oil pressure sending unit, which is just a little screw on piece, but requires a specialty socket. I never did figure out what might have been causing it. I think I have a ground fault or a bad fuse somewhere. Almost every time I turn it off there's a buzzing noise coming from the OnStar speaker next to the driver side door. And my AC is out now after getting it charged and tested for $160 two weeks ago...
      Did you ever figure out what was causing yours to stall? Mine frequently stalled while sitting in park, in reverse leaving a parking spot, or right as the light turned green lol. Commonly, but not always with the AC on.

    • @orlandotech
      @orlandotech ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it’s been a few months but I’ll respond to your question.
      It’s usually down on the refrigerant discharge line pretty close to the compressor. That line goes straight from the compressor to the condenser coil in front of the engine radiator. Some have only 2 wires like the low pressure switch in this video. Some of them have 3 wires and are called a pressure Transducer. Transducers convert a pressure reading into a low voltage electrical signal that a computer can read. The HVAC head unit or controls have the “computer brain” as part of that piece. So it decides based on a number of temperature and pressure readings how to keep the HVAC system running close to the temperature you set it to. Those have same the simple to replace design with the valve core inside the pressure fitting that it mounts to and O ring to seal up leaks.

      @@ninjaguyYT I hope it works for you! I'm slowly learning about my AC "system" - since both the dealer and local mechanic claimed they fixed it (each charging $1K) - and the SAME result - it turns off pretty fast and blows hots air. They all claim it "works." hahah. I realized that whatever repair - the PCM has to be "refreshed" or updated or whatever and no one has ever done that yet. So that obviously needs to be done but I don't really want to convince the dealer that this is crucial. I even had a former GM Mechanic tell me that they always updated the PCM to any AC repair. But GM sent out a technical notice that basically canceled the previous need to update the PCM. It was kind of like - "don't worry about this anymore." Not sure why they did that. It could be some kind of warranty ran out deal. Like if the customer's AC breaks they're on their own to figure out how to fix it. haha. The more the deal can keep doing "parts replacement" without actually fixing it - the more money rolls in.
